As other mentioned on this list, this is no problem or bug, but a feature.
Their should be absolutly no reason to have root access all the time (do you
know one?)

I assume you have a stand alone machine, and you are the only user. Then I
would recommend you to keep the first console for root. Then you can login
as ceed on other consoles, and switch back to your root console via ALT-F1.

This is what I do, and you will experience, that you don't need too much
root access.

If you want to give ceed access to floppy, cd, sound and other, add "ceed"
at the end of the appropriate lines in your /etc/group file. This file
controls the access for common files and devices.

> And finally can you pleaze give me a small description of what each
> user in the original /etc/passwd is!

This "users" are no real users, this means, you can't login as, for example
"news" (they have an asterisk * as password). They are for system
maintenance, and special system programs, as daemons, can run as "news", for
example, so they don't have to run as root for special tasks (the news
daemon only needs access to news specific files, and not to the usr
directory, for example).

This somewhat complicated mechanism does protect the system against you and
you against the system ;)

Thank you,
Marcus

True enough. Also, we can't just take the non-us packages and
stuff them in non-free either; I think non-us and non-duetch are more
 similar than not.

Marco> Maybe we need a special flag in the control files to stopp

Umm, no, since then I could not get non-us software from the
non-us sites (and legitimate german users could not download from,
say, uk). No mirror program actually looks at the control file, so
you don't mean just the mirror sites.

But non-free is mirrored on several FTP servers in Germany. And a child
could download the games from a German FTP server and this is not allowed.

Maybe we need a special flag in the control files to stopp distribution of

ftplib package

1997-12-28 Thread Hani Saliba
Hello,

After looking at the WNPP document, and getting some advice from people on
the mailing list I ask to adopt/maintain a relatively simpler pakage: the
ftplib package (it's a package that, roughly, encapsulates ftp commands
inside C functions). I haven't examined the package throughly yet, and will
email the mailing list with a more detailed plan later.

Does anybody have any objections? Any suggestions? Any information about
pending updates? Any bugs?

I hope that my first experience with "debianizing" will be a good one and I
apreciate any hints I can get,
Hani

Not to mention it is EXTREMELY dangerous to your system since root can
wipe out your system. Root cannot log in remotely due to security
restraints... but if you give normal usernames root capabilities... they
can log in remote thus creating a security breach. It is better to leave
root and the normal user separate.

Libc6 progress: 1997-12-28

1997-12-28 Thread Richard Braakman
This is a list of packages in the main distribution that need work to
be fully libc6-based. I base it on the Packages file at my local mirror,
so it may be a day or two out of date. If you have questions about why
a particular package is on the list, or if you think there is an error,
don't hesitate to contact me.

There are now 105 packages in the list.

Packages cfengine, dome, exuberant-ctags, ncpfs, pax, radiusd-merit,
rosegarden, samba, scm, spider, umsdos, wml, and xmp have been upgraded.

The compface library has been straightened out, but now the compface
package depends on libcompface1 rather than libcompfaceg1.

I have merged in the changes from the new WNPP list.
There is a new version of smail again, still compiled with libc5.

xcdroast 0.96d beta 2 packages

1997-12-28 Thread Wichert Akkerman

I've put together an experimental package for xcdroast 0.96d beta 2.
This adds support for a lot more writers since it uses cdrecord now.
It should fix a lot of other bugs too. So far it has been tested on
a Philips CDD 2600 and a Yamaha 400 without any problems.

There is on catch though: you need a recompiled tix41 since the current
package has no proper tcl/tk 8 support. Until Philippe Troin uploads
a new package I've put a new package on my homepage.

If anyone wants to try it (please do so!), you can find both at
http://wiwww.wi.leidenuniv.nl/~wichert/debian/ . I would appreciate
any success or failure report for this one since the upstream author
is very anxious to fix the last bugs before going on to multisession
support.

Wichert.

I find this hard to believe. kernel-headers and kernel-source
packages write to the directories kernel-headers-X.X.XX and
kernel-source-X.X.XX. They create symbolic links /usr/src/linux and
 /usr/src/linux-X.X.Xx.

They most certainly do not clobber existing local headers in
 /usr/src/linux!!

Current [ractices, as far as debian is concerned, is that
debian owns /usr/src. This has been the case since April 1996 (that's

I think this is the case. This is not new, (21 months is old
in the Debian world); but I do agree this needs to be better
 advertized.

Re: What's Debian's /usr/src policy.

1997-12-28 Thread Karl M. Hegbloom
Along with this, in the similar thread, I think we should set aside a
place in our "/usr/src/" for the building of Debian packages, using
`cvs-buildpackage'. (which I promise to _try_ and grok this week.)

 How about... "/usr/src/debian/{build,work}"?

It would be good to put into policy a naming convention for CVS tags,
 as well, perhaps.

I volunteer to try rolling those patches into XEmacs 20.5. I think
that configure ought to detect `liblockfile' and compile `movemail'
 accordingly. Sound right?

Yes, that seems right... I looked them over once a few months ago. I
think after I've finished reading the two W. Richard Stevens Unix
programming books I've just begun, I will go over them again with
better understanding, and thus, better recollection.

I'm not the official word on this but I think Debian "owns" everything but
/usr/local (in which it can only make a directory). There are exceptions
if your directory isn't in the file system standard (don't remember the
correct abreviation). However, I recently saw a nice behaviour from a
Sun. Before clobbering a file that Sun didn't "own" (in another package),
it prompted me on what it was about to do, by asking if I wanted to
clobber them. This would be a nice addition in dpkg/deity.

Thanks,
Brandon

Assuming you're right, and movemail is used for all mail locking, then
if we patch movemail to use liblockfile, we should be fine.

I'm under the impression that liblockfile handles everything,
including nfs. I believe libnfslock is transitional, for use until
everything's migrated to liblockfile.

What's Debian's /usr/src policy.

1997-12-28 Thread Rob Browning

The question is, "who owns /usr/src, Debian or the local sysadmin?"

A recent run-in with the latest pre-release libc6 packages made me
realize that I hadn't fully considered the role of /usr/src on a
Debian system.

In general, I had always considered Debian as "owning" everything
outside /usr/local, /usr/src, and /home. By "owning" I mean that I if
I did anything fancy in the regions that belong to Debian, I should
expect that work might get clobbered later by new Debian packages, or
updates to existing packages.

Unfortunately, kernel-headers, which I had to install for the first
time because of a dependency from the upcoming libc6-dev package,
clobbered my existing *local* kernel source tree headers by writing to
/usr/src/linux which was already a link I had created to
/usr/src/linux-2.1.73. kernel-headers is not the only package
claiming space in /usr/src that might conflict with current practices;
pcmcia-source does as well.

I really only see two possible choices.

1) Flatly state /usr/src/ is owned by Debian. I.e. it is no safer to
put anything there than in /bin. If you want to put something in
/usr/src/ (because you're building kernels with kernel-package or
whatever), you should use /usr/local/src/ instead. This policy, if
adopted, will have to be *heavily* advertised.

2) Try to accomodate user files in /usr/src. This would cause the
least conflict with all the existing kernel/PCMCIA HOWTO's, etc about
where things you unpack should go, but having user files in /usr/src
would probably make it nearly impossible to write "safe"
{pre, post}{inst,rm} scripts for the relevant packages. (Note that the
"bug" that got me was in the kernel-header's postinst where it assumes
that if /usr/src/linux is a link, then it is safe to unpack there.)

I'm not sure what the right answer is, but I think we need to consider
the problem before the new libc6-dev gets released from the
experimental stages, and we certainly need a long-term policy.

I think that no less than 2 months.

But.. you may install hamm now from ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/hamm/hamm/!

It's fairly stable for general use.

Thanks for the note! I'll see what I can do! I haven't made a
development package for freetype yet because I have yet to learn how. I
will see if I could set up a (lib)freetype and (lib)freetype-dev before
the new year. However, if you are in a hurry, you might like to link
xmbdfed statically for now.

Sorry for the inconvenience! :)

Have a Happy New Year! (in a few days, that is. :)
