imlib-dev - Header files needed for Imlib development

imlib1 - Imlib is an imaging library for X and X11
Closes: 93191
Changes:
 imlib (1.9.10-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream.
   * Made libungif4-dev the preferred GIF -dev package since the
libungif4 run-time library is the preferred one. (Closes: #93191)
   * No longer any need to define -DNO_INIT_MSG. It no longer appears
to be used in the Imlib/gdk-imlib sources.
   * Wildcarded the glob expression for the shared libraries listed in
imlib1.files.in and gdk-imlib1.files.in so that libraries with
revisions that have more than one digit (e.g. 1.9.10 vs 1.9.8.1)
will be installed. Thanks to Eric Gillespie, Jr.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] for pointing out the problem and suggesting a fix.
   * Install the pkgconfig files for both the Imlib and the gdk_imlib
libraries in the `/usr/lib/pkgconfig' directory. Unlike the
imlib-config script, each file has been placed in its
 corresponding -dev package.

Re: chroot bind?

2001-04-23 Thread Nicholas Lee

Sorry missed your response, just picked it up now from the web archive.

Are you working with bind 8.X or 9.X?

Jaldhar H. Vyas mentioned he has something working with 8.2.3. I was
only thinking myself with bind8.

As Jaldhar also mentioned, bind9 isn't something I trust yet. Even in a
chroot.

Personally I see no need to replace the bind package. In fact with the
use of alternatives on /etc/init.d/bind it should be pretty easy to mix
them in together.

Here are some issues though:

i) /chrootlocation/dev/log and syslod. No generic simply way to
automatically add this log socket to syslog set it listens too.

ii) named-xfer is the only binary required in /chrootlocation/, how to
deal with the base bind package upgrading and this binary changing?

iii) I've sent a message to the FHS mailing. I guess we'll see what
comes up. 8) Whatever the case I specific its not easy to find a
generic mechanism to deal with chroots, particular since they are often
applications specific.

Re: Location of chroot environments (was: chroot bind?)

2001-04-23 Thread Will Lowe
I just put it in /var/secure-bind.

I tend to put play chroots under my home directory, and chroots for
 production daemons under /var/chroot.

A pity that the FHS doesn't comment on that.

How about /var/lib/bind/chroot?

No, it isn't. gzip -9 already applied to the floppies is very close to

Isn't that slightly redundant? A bzImage is compressed in the first place.
If anything, it should compress the vmlinux.

lilo

2001-04-23 Thread Russell Coker
I have compiled a copy of the latest LILO for Potato. It is available on
http://www.coker.com.au/lilo/ . There is no Packages file as I don't plan to
update this enough to make it necessary to use apt for it.

This package is for people who use Potato but who have newer SCSI
controllers, a ReiserFS root file system, or any other setup for which the
Potato version of LILO doesn't work.

I have no plans for submitting this version for a Potato update.

Also this package has the latest debconf code. It won't create a lilo.conf
file unless the current file doesn't exist or it has #AUTOREPLACE in a
single line.

This latest change to the debconf of LILO will be uploaded to unstable
shortly.

where is pc2sun.pl?

2001-04-23 Thread Atsuhito Kohda
Hi all,

In /usr/share/doc/console-data/keymaps/README.sparc
it is stated as follows;

2.2 The Easy Way

Choose one of the provided PC keymaps for your language and do the following:

  $ pc2sun.pl lang.kmap  sunt5-lang.kmap

but I can not find pc2sun.pl in my system. I wish to know
if there is pc2sun.pl somewhere I don't know or it is not
contained in any package at all.

Best Regards, 2001.4.23

Now, it doesn't take a genius, to see how this will cascade. For each
optimization of a kernel, there will be a full kernel-image.deb. Then, for
the boot disks, there will be the individual kernel, and the modules to match
it(this is a doubling of space). So, for all the numbers given in this
thread(whatever their value), you have to double them.

These kernel-image debs will NOT go onto the boot disks. The boot disks
will support what is essentially the 386 flavour.

Now, my gut instinct says that, as of this moment in time, no one has
addressed the building of this initrd, to use at boot time, AFTER
installation. Yes, we may have an installation initrd, but, in almost all
circles, that is going to be different that what is used after the system is
installed. Has this boot time initrd been constructed? Do we know how we are
 going to do that?

If you're referring to the bits on the installation media, then it's a
question for the debian-installer folks to answer. And IIRC they have
already done it.

The best way to handle all this, is to train users how to compile a kernel,
or, let them pick the optimization they want, and we compile the kernel for
them. We could even use a double boot technique, to make sure it works. The
new kernel is installed, added to lilo, but not made the default. System
reboots, and the user picks the new kernel. IF the kernel works, we switch
 the default.

How are they going to compile a kernel if they haven't even installed Linux?
The most important function of initrd is to reduce the number of kernel
images needed on boot floppies to one.

When a package was only uploaded to stable the bugs aren't closed but

Your case is wrong. What if the bug didn't exist in woody, and only in

ITP: gbib -- Gnome BibTeX editor

2001-04-23 Thread Philipp Frauenfelder
Hi

[ I am not on the list! ]

I have already announced my ITP to wnpp (#94481).

I just saw the Freshmeat announcement today and I intend to
  package this small program.

It works directly on .bib databases and has a small but nice
frontend to perform changes on the database. It's GPLed and uses
  Gnome.

  Ah, yes: http://gbib.seul.org/

I will upload the package today.

doesn't go in the kernel without patching the kernel proper. This
should've been a fair indication. BTW, I'm not talking about Netfilter

Since UPX only runs when a program is loaded, and only takes a few seconds
to do its thing, I see no reason why weaker (eg, 486) machines couldn't
handle it. Even on old 386 machines, the slowdown shouldn't be much of a
headache, unless what's being compressed is a very frequently executed
program (like `ls'), in which case it'd be better not to UPX it.

In any event, UPX shouldn't matter to people with fast machines (who have
plenty of disk space and plenty of CPU power), and would benefit people
with small disk drives (who can probably live with the small load time
delay).
For these reasons, I agree with the sentiment that UPX should be used on
almost all (if not all) executables shipped with Debian.

The reliability aspects (executables suddenly start failing if you
temporarily run out of hard disk space in /tmp or wherever) would be a
killer for me.

(Given this, compressing /bin/rm would be extremely foolish. :))

Incidentally, I assume the temporarily decompressed executables created
by UPX are mode 700?

If there was a kernel-headers-2.4.3-ac12+loadsa+netfilter-k6 package

When he wants to see if his secondary servers are vulnerable, or if his

Or when debugging cache pollution problems one needs to check if the

Um, scanners follow the reputation of their name, they merely scan[1] for
vulnerabilities. I agree that previously, attackers probed hosts for
vulnerabilities prior to launching an attack, and now this has changed a bit.
It does not however, imply that we should ease the life of those who still
follow conventional script kiddie methods. If version 'Not available' is
able to thwart at least a single scan, then it's worth it.

Doesn't one know one's bind version? I believe that probes for the version.bind
are mostly malicious in nature. If one wishes to determine the bind version
of his ISP, one can simply call up the respective technical support center.

[1] I'm not entirely correct, there are scanners which both scan and attack,
but that's not the majority of scanners.
