Yep. Instead of all these packages with ps and pdf files, whereever possible,
why don't we just have the LaTeX/Texinfo/Tex/Docbook/whatever source, with
instructions on how to build ps/pdf in README.Debian? (The instructions are
nesseccary, unless you expect everyone to know how to build Docbook and
 whatever other obscure formats.)

That's a great idea, but so many e-books are not in latex/docbook/texinfo
formats. My primary idea is to give access to as many ebooks as
possible. E.g. all W3C documents are in HTML or PDF format.
In that case HTML is preferred. But so many books are only available
in PDF format - which can be printed in non-letter formats easily.

Why is that? I find PDF/PS formats to be totally useless to me very often.
Reason? If it's packaged by an American developer, it will be in letter
papersize 99% of the time. (are there other parts of the world that use
 letter?)

Acrobat Reader can change page format interactively. Anyway, HTML should
be the preferred format _WHEN_ available. This is not always true.
The same for other 'recent' device-independent formats such as docbook.

Not only is this totally useless if I want to print a few pages out of this,
but also I feel disoriented (I can't think of a better way to describe it)
when viewing a document on screen in this different aspect ratio.

IMHO it would be better to provide HTML and text formats, together with the
source format from where on the preferred document format can be generated.

(apart from the missing space for the first Depends, but that's not
 crucial apparently).

If isdnlog depends on isdnlog-data, does isdnlog-data have to depend
on isdnlog as well? If not, remove the dependency and you've won.

Well, isdnlog needs the data, and the data is useless without isdnlog.
The reason why they're in separate packages is that the data is the same
for all architectures, and there's relatively a lot of it; so
replicating it in every (architecture-dependent) isdnlog package isn't
efficient. Also this opens up the possibility of downloading updated
isdnlog-data packages (or packages that provide and replace it) from
e.g. a website, as the data changes quite frequently.

But as there's been a deafening silence about my question about an
override for this, I've wimped out and made isdnlog depend on
isdnlog-data (the recommends was actually too weak, as isdnlog won't run
if it can't find any data), and isdnlog-data recommends isdnlog (so it
can be installed on those architectures that don't have isdnlog; perhaps
at some stage another app may want to use isdnlog's data?)

Stephen Stafford seems most serious about it and is willing to be the

with getting the text up to date again. I know from experience that
writing and maintaining a book requires plenty of effort. Even just
getting notes from others saying that this part is not correct and

I'll mail the new maintainers privately and ask them to make uploads.

[Testing] Install problems

2001-09-17 Thread Bill Allombert
Hello,

I have installed testing in a chroot last friday.
It was a minimimal install.

I report these problems in hope they will be fixed sooner.

1) The locales package ask me to type ^Z, edit /etc/locale.gen
OK I have done it, but after I type fg, I got a black screen and
RETURN was broken.
I reentered ^Z and got the shell in a now working terminal, but after
typing fg again, I revert to the broken one. So I restart dselect.

2) vi is not working. in fact the situation is

/bin/vi is a wrapper that try /usr/bin/vi or /bin/elvis-tiny
/bin/elvis-tiny and /usr/bin/vi are symlink to /etc/alternatives/vi
/etc/alternatives/vi is a symlink to /bin/elvis-tiny

Please note nvi is installed.

Maybe the first problem is due to the chroot environment.
Anyone can confirm/infirm it under a plain install ?

Best regards,

Bill.

Mozilla and spell check

2001-09-17 Thread Valentijn Sessink
Hello all,
As you can see, I'm writing this with Mozilla 0.9.4, which works great
(I did a backport for Potato, went OK, but the mozilla-xmlterm did not
like becoming a .deb. For those of you who are interested: get it at
http://olivier.pk.wau.nl/~valentyn/, Packages.gz available, backports
are in debian/potato/binary-i386/)

One thing I'm missing is a spell checker in the composer. I looked
around a bit and as far as I can see, the official (i.e. non-debian,
regular, Mozilla supplied) installer seems to incorporate a
proprietary spell checker. I'm not sure, I did not check - yet.

Before I start downloading Mozilla 0.9.4, is there maybe someone who
tried this before, or are there people that use the non-debianized
Mozilla version? Can anyone comment on this?

(Related: I can't get Acroread to work as a plugin, but oh well, that
can wait).

Interbase status (ITP #83098)

2001-09-17 Thread Tille, Andreas
Hello,

any news from the Interbase Debian packages?

Kind regards

Andreas.

Seeking for a Debian Security Secretary

2001-09-17 Thread Martin Schulze
Current problems with Debian Security have led me into reconsidering
this issue which I thought about one year ago or so. Debian Security
is very crucial to our users and thus should be managed properly.

To help improve the situation I'm offering a very important job within
the Debian project. I'd like to have somebody who will help the core
Debian Security Team doing their work. This seems to be required
since all members of the Security Team have other important things to
do and still don't know how to fork(2) themselves.

This position requires:

. Discussing security problems with the Security Team, as well as
   with third parties.

. Notifying the Security Team of incidents they haven't noticed
   already.

. Maintaining an internal list of security incidents, both resolved
   and unresolved.

. Reminding members of the Debian Security Team until they release an
advisory or decide that Debian is not vulnerable to a particular
   problem.[1]

. Ensure that not only packages in stable but also in the unstable
distribution contain security fixes. This implies continuesly
kindly reminding package maintainers, eventually also preparing
releases or NMUs for unstable with help of the QA or Security Team.

. Extract security patches from other vendors' security fixes for
further investigation by the the Security Secretary or the Debian
   Security Team.

. Preparing security patches together with the Debian Security Team.

This is done by:

 . Reading and understanding bugtraq.

. Monitoring[2] others distributions security advisories (at least
Immunix, Trustix, EnGarde, Caldera, RedHat, SuSE, Mandrake and
Conectiva, the more the better). This should be done by
subscribing to other vendors security lists.

. Reading and understanding mail on the private list of the Debian
   Security Team.

Explanations:

[1] From time to time the Security Team forgets about security issues.
It is very time-consuming doing research for old issues, but it
has to be done.

[2] This could help http://www.infodrom.ffis.de/Linux/security/, but
it is also not complete enough.

Regards,

Joey

ITP: freenet6 -- Client to configure an IPv6 tunnel to freenet6

2001-09-17 Thread Martin Waitz
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

Description: Client to configure an IPv6 tunnel to freenet6
Providing tspc, a Tunnel Server Protocol Client, this Package allows
an easy way to connect the machine to the 6bone.
 .
Configured tunneling is a transition method standardized by IETF to use IPv6 in
coexistence with IPv4 by encapsulating IPv6 packets over IPv4. Any host already
connected to Internet with IPv4 which has an IPv6 stack can establish a link
 to the Internet IPv6.
 .
FREENET6's TSP is a new model based on a client/server approach. A protocol is
used to request a single IPv6 address to a full IPv6 prefix from a client to a
tunnel server according to the IPv6 broker model.

It was downloaded from http://www.freenet6.net/download.shtml

Upstream Author: Viagénie Inc.

Copyright (c) 2001 Viagénie Inc.
It may be licensed under the Viagénie Public License, see
the file LEGAL for details.

the VPL can be downloaded at http://www.freenet6.net/VPL
the only problem i found, is that it requires to keep the source code
available for 12 months (6 months if a newer version is available),
requiring me to keep the source packages available, even after they
got obsoleted by newer versions

expect the packages to be available on people.debian.org/~tali and sid soon.

pci.ids

2001-09-17 Thread Bill Allombert
Hello,

There are several package shipped with a copy of pci.ids with various
version.
(at least pciutils, xviddetect, ksysctrl in testing)
It would be better to have only one such file, and to have an easy
way to update it. With new hardware sold, it become easily outdated,
and it may cause problems when installing the stable Debian release.

Maybe we should create a pci.ids package with just this file and

There is a maintainer, Martin Mares, listed at the top of those files.
Don't know what the best place for the file is, I'm trying to keep it
uptodate in the pciutils package (also by Martin).

/usr/share/misc/pci.ids, which is exactly where lspci wants it to be
(package pciutils), and where the FHS says it should be too.

All other packages that need this file should get it from
/usr/share/misc/pci.ids and Depends: pciutils, I suppose.

(All this based on the fact that Martin Mares is upstream for both).

testing 'jgraph' with latin characters

2001-09-17 Thread Pedro Zorzenon Neto
Hi list,

I fixed a wishlist bug in package jgraph to make it compatible
with latin1 fonts.

If you have some time to test it for me, please install jgraph 83-16
and check if it works with latin characters in your machine.

You can see manpage section SUPPORT FOR OTHER FONT ENCODINGS for more
details.

More confused about testing messages

2001-09-17 Thread Daniel Burrows
I was just trying to figure out why libgengameng and heroes aren't being
installed into testing. It seems that the packages (particularly gengameng)
are available on all architectures in the proper version, and depend only on
packages available in testing. The only clue I could find for gengameng was:

gengameng: alpha: burgerspace

This seems to say that gengameng would break burgerspace on alpha (which
is true); however, it should be possible to upgrade burgerspace and gengameng
simultaneously on alpha (and any other platform with SDL) And indeed,
burgerspace is available in unstable on every architecture that supports it
in testing.

Similarly, the output for the heroes packages (if I am reading it correctly)
only shows interrelationships between the heroes packages themselves -- I
can't see any reason it's not moving into testing. It's never been in
testing, its dependencies are all available in testing, and it does not
have any RC bugs.

  What am I missing?

Thanks,
  Daniel

gtkmm (day 10) sorely needs to make it in as well, hopefully it will have no
 similar problems.

update_output.txt says:

  gtk+extra: alpha: gpsim gpsim-dev gpsim-lcd gpsim-led gpsim-logic quicklist

Perhaps all these packages need to be upgraded in testing
simultaneously? That needs manual action by the people running testing.

gpg and trustdb very slow

2001-09-17 Thread Joey Hess
Has anyone else noticed that using gpg with debian-keyring 2001.09.03
results in excessively slow trustdb-related things?

For example, it often takes me 10 minutes to verify a gpg signed mail
now. Strace shows literally hundreds of thousands of seeks and reads in
the trustdb file, with many thousands of duplicated reads of each record.

Another example, I ran gpg --list-keys 6 hours ago. It's not done yet.
This on a P2-300, 256mb ram. The slowdown is because it is evidently
inserting each key into the trustdb in turn, and a single insert takes
several minutes.

It does seem that after doing this thing with the trustdb for a key,
future uses of that key are as fast as I used to expect.

paquete de main que podria estar en main o non-US/main

2001-09-17 Thread Andres Seco Hernandez
Hola

 mismo paquete. Es decir:

 Package: A
 Conflicts: B

 Package: B
 Provides: A
 Conflicts: A

En lo personal me gusta más:

 Package: A
 Conflicts: A

 Package: B
 Provides: A
 Conflicts: A

pues es más fácil de mantener. Si mañana aparece C:

 Package: C
 Provides: A
 Conflicts: A

pero ahora también hay que cambiar A:

 Package: A
 Conflicts: B, C

 Package: B
 Provides: A
 Replaces: A
 Conflicts: A

que recuerdo del difunto Packaging Manual.
