I have just copied one of my perl programs from an old slink system to a new machine running potato. Its a perl program for managing users and such. Re: Rsyncable GZIP (was Re: Package metadata server)
> Some questions that need to be asked: > Howmany of our mirrors are rsyncable? How much load can the servers handle? How much more load does rsync do than a fast http server like tux? I think the proposed way of providing diff's for certain "common" versions is much nicer. Sending a request for Packages-diff-mymd5sum.gz and fetching that file is certainly faster and does cause much less load on the server than rsync. It actually will even require less data to be transferred. When the file doesn't exist i can always fallback to fetching the whole file or maybe rsync then... Keeping 14 daily diffs probably does take just a few megs on the server. Providing rsync will probably need as much main memory... But we HAD this discussion already a few days ago... Bug#141352: ITP: xmedcon -- medical image conversion
Package: wnpp Version: N/A; reported 2002-04-05 Severity: wishlist * Package name: xmedcon Version : 0.7.5 Upstream Author : Erik Nolf <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> * URL : http://xmedcon.sourceforge.net/ * License : (GPL, LGPL, mostly) Description : medical image conversion This project stands for Medical Image Conversion. Released under the (L)GPL, it comes with the full C-source code of the library, a flexible command line utility and a neat graphical front-end using the Gtk+ toolkit. The currently supported formats are: Acr/Nema 2.0, Analyze (SPM), DICOM 3.0, Ecat/Matrix 6.4, InterFile 3.3 and Gif87a/89a. . The program also allows to read unsupported files without compression, to print pixel values or to extract/reorder specified images. It is possible to retrieve the raw binary/ascii image arrays or to write GIF for desktop applications. . This is the program version for X based on gtk+. Processes only one file at a time. I split the original xmedcon in 4 packages (libmdc=shared lib, libmdc-dev=developer files, medcon=command line/batch tool, and xmedcon=gui) The prelimanary packages are at: http://neuro.psychologie.uni-oldenburg.de/debian/dists/unstable/main (source and bin) Since this is my first debian package I hope I haven't screwed up to bad. There are 2 License Issues.(see README in libmdc) The code for gif contains the patented LZW-stuff (it's not built on shared libs) and the part of the code comes from a book with unclear license. The code for importing ecat has an unclear license. PNG is on the to do list to resolve the first problem. The ecat part is more difficult since the only alternative library I know of (libecat) is not free. I can disable both of these options (and it still works for my needs) but maybe it takes out the fun part for others. A possible way is to put a "clean" libmdc in the official debian distribution and let people who need more compile the stuff themselve (like pine some time ago). Other than that the packages seem to work. If upstream would like to provide snapshots of Debian packages or simply to have a full spread of package configurations for the users that download the software, that's great! How hard is it to maintain someone else's debian/ directory? As hard as it is to run patch(1) or mv(1). The same practices apply. Changes to a package directory or spec file do not necessitate changes in upstream versions. Add the '-1' or '-1.1' that we normally use for package versioning. Send the patches to upstream as a low priority fix. Do you need CVS access to upstream? Na. Does upstream even use CVS? Perhaps. Is it important? Defoma Problems
I maintain the ttf-larabie-* packages, a set of 350 almost-free fonts (free as in free beer that is ;) - in 450 ttf files. I'd like to support defoma, but the defoma utilities for generating the defoma hint files are unuseable for me. 1. it takes ages: i have to confirm about 20 dialogs for each font. Makes 9000 dialogs i have to fill out and confirm... I havn't found a way to specify certain defaults, either... for example i want all Fonts to use the "LarabieFonts" Registry. Second i do not want to be shown the confirmation that the font uses "iso-8859-1" as default encoding... 2. i don't know enough about fonts to classify them. Is this font now Roman, is it Semilight, is it NoSerif? For most fonts i tried classifying i did not succeed really. It was difficul enough to split them into three useful packages... I tried mailing the defoma maintainer a few month's ago; i did not recieve a reply. Can someone point me to some useful scripts for generating defoma hints? I definitely like the idea of the rsyncable gzipping, i think its something that could be relatively eaily implemented following the woody release. I dont think we should use this for all our gzipped files in the archive, but the Packages.gz file would be an excellent place to use this. SUID root is not required to provide capabilities on LSM systems, but that's probably not relevant to this discussion. Why not use pam_group.so to add the apm group to the user if they login at the console? /dev/apm_bios perms 664?
1) Permissions on /dev/apm_bios are currently 660. Is there any reason these permissions shouldn't be 664? The latter would allow non-root users to find out about power management events (but not to initiate them). 2) I would also like to know what people think would be the right way safely to allow users other than root to perform power management events. Currently only root can perform apm suspend, for example. It would be nice if anyone in the operator group could also do this. The apm driver requires CAP_SYS_ADMIN for privileged operations, so a setuid program would be required. Report #134595 asks that /usr/bin/apm simply be made setuid root; please read the discussion there first. -- Thomas Hood signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Package metadata server
(picked up from http://www.debianplanet.org/article.php?sid=633) The scalability problems of the Packages file is a recognised problem that has been discused many times on this list, i think the following idea could go a long way to solving it. The current method of checking for updates is to retrieve a new Packages.gz file and discard the old Packages.gz file. The problem with this method is that commonly less than 1% of the Packages.gz file has changed. A number of solutions have been proposed to overcome this problem, these include - Compressing the Packages.gz in an rsync friendly manner. - Making diffs from older Packages files available. - Splitting the Packages.gz into multiple files. - Reducing the size of the metadata for each package. Each of the above ideas has its own problems that have been discussed on this list. An idea that i havent heard mentioned here is to create a client/server application for specifically handling our metadata, the server can be queried by clients to send only the required metadata. Checking for updates could go something like this. 1) query the server for all the package names and version in woody, 2) Compare the results to your previous metadata to determine which packages have change. 3) query the server for the metdata of the changed packages. 4) reconstruct the Packages file with the new metadata. Advantages - Compatable with existing packaging tools, it can compliment rather than replace the existing method. - Reduced bandwidth to a minimum - Flexible, different queries could be implemented to handle other unforseen situations. - other ? Disadvantages - implementation may take a bit of work. - requires a new server to be run rather than using standard file transport tools. - other ? One idea is to do it with LDAP, but i dont know enough to comment. Glenn pgpAbhUi3u6dc.pgp Description: PGP signature
