Re: Debian m17n method under X with UTF-8
On Saturday 16 October 2004 07:34, Osamu Aoki wrote: Hi folks, How are you making Debian into UTF-8 and multilingual/multi-locale system while switching between normal gnome and Xfce? So far, I did not find this trivial. Well, in my case, I found SCIM to be the best solution. I don't need to care about locales any more, because SCIM doesn't care about locales, as long as you use any UTF-8 locale as default. I just switch on SCIM which input method I prefer and can insert CJK into any UTF-8 aware application. The locale setting only refers to which language I want to have to display the windowmanager and system messages. GTK2 apps and mozilla, ooo etc. need to have LC_CTYPE to be set to any CJK UTF-8 locale to accept SCIM input. If you want to try SCIM, compile it from source (www.freedesktop.org/Software/scim/), the debian packages don't work for me. So, as I prefer my system to be in english, I use en_US.UTF-8 as main locale and zh_TW.UTF-8 as LC_CTYPE. XMODIFIERS has to be set to @im=SCIM. The SCIM approach is in my opinion the only useful one, since the locale should only reflect which language you prefer and in which country you are. It should have nothing to do with input methods, as long as your system is UTF-8. Just my 2 conts. Cheers Arne -- Arne Gtje () [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Spam catcher. Address might change in future!) Sarge's source code
Hello, I have tried compile of QTOPIA using the MIPSEL version of debian (woody). The version of gcc (g++) is 2.95.4-7. An unusual end is carried out, after displaying Internal compiler error, if make of the QTOPIA is carried out using this compiler. Although the gcc (g++) version 2.95.4-22 of debian (sarge) is not tried yet, I'm interested in the patch which is contained. Please let me know from URL of what the source code of debian (sarge) can be downloaded. Regards, Kazuaki Ichinohe

You all have convinced me that it is in fact not Just Another, but rather a worthy addition to the Debian archive. I am sorry it took me so long, I should have checked first before writing back to the list. Thus I hope you accept my apologies. Already accepted. I would suggest not naming it an smtp plugin for mutt though because it works equally well with every other product that uses /usr/sbin/sendmail. You are right, but I think that the description could always be made in a better way. The substance was another thing, anyway. RFC: common database policy/infrastracture
hey all, for those who weren't following the previous thread[1], i've come up with a rough draft of a best practices document for database based applications. i'd greatly appreciate input, especially from the current maintainers of database-using or database-server applications. the draft is available at: http://people.debian.org/seanius/policy/dbapp-policy.html also, after much discussion in this thread and privately with joey hess, i think the best approach of the options discussed would be to provide debconf questions in a single run-time dependency package via the debconf REGISTER method. it's not the best solution (because of the risk of the questions being asked at postinst time), but it should guaranteeably work, it's centralized, easily translatable, and makes less work for folks who use it with their packages. this package, database-common, currently is only a collection of normalized debconf templates. this is very much a work in progress, but i think at this point it's worthwhile to make sure there's sufficient interest as well as possibly get some help :) deb http://people.debian.org/~seanius/policy/examples/ ./ deb-src http://people.debian.org/~seanius/policy/examples/ ./ what's lacking: - the blocks of code for the .*config, .*inst and .*rm files, which could be provided in a set of wrapper scripts to be sourced by the individual packages. - a demonstration package using this - possibly a debhelper-like package to automatically add these blocks of code also, - further amendments to the best practices document based on developer feedback. - resulting changes in packaging from said changes - templates for pgsql and other database setups (currently only some common templates and the mysql-centric ones) - translations so please, let me know what you think! sean [1] http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/10/msg00340.html -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature
