It was never my intention to make it hard to share, just to make certain my name stayed with the game and future variants of it. This is really good news. Don't worry, your name will stay there forever. The really funny thing is that someone has done a survey of who has written what linux code... and your name appears 19th in the list of all authors in terms of numbers of lines of code. (And this is after only including two of the many games with the original Moria in their ancestry.) http://www.gnoppix.org/pages/rute/node51.html Sheesh, I should have gone into game design I guess. I had no idea people were still playing these games. Did anyone ever add the Moria V5.0 new features to the game? Liquids (pools, streams, lava, etc), orbs, and recipes for building magic weapons? There were other things but that's the stuff I remember off-hand. I don't think they ever made it into Moria. However, quite a few Angband variants have them. The liquids are in Zangband, and variants based on that, with a few exceptions in the geneological tree like Oangband. There aren't that many variants which allow building magic weapons. The most notable is Sangband, which has 'fenneling', which turned out to be a little unbalanced, which probably is why the idea didn't propagate. iirc, no variant has what you originally envisaged orbs to be... However, rings and amulets have exploded in variety in quite a few versions of the game, filling the design space with rough equivalents. just my 2 cents: mplayer _does not depend_ on the win32codecs : it will work quite fine without them, and still be able to play an humungous number of video formats and codecs. I've always wondered whether doing a subsequent upload after the first one went into NEW resets the clock on ftp-master approval. My policy has been to do an upload to experimental for any existing source package with a new binary package and to not do any further uploads to experimental until it gets approved. This way, uploads without the new binary package can proceed to unstable without risking resetting the clock. Once the package is approved, I would turn around and immediately upload to unstable. (See tiff for an example.) Do you happen to know whether this procedure makes a difference? pwc-source headed for unstable this weekend
i've been using this new pwc driver for a while now and have not had any problems with it, tested on i386 and amd64 boxen. so, after looking over the latest version, assuming there are no new issues i'll plan on uploading the pwc-source package to unstable. i don't think this really warrants a cool off period in experimental, but if someone has a reasonable objection then i will put it there instead. i'll probably do this on saturday. quoth teemu: Since this package claims to be GPL (although there might be issues with the reverse engineering which this code is based on) is there any reason not to integrate this code into the kernel-source package and have the pwc.ko module compiled automatically to kernel-packages? The kernel-package-2.6.10-1-686 package already contains several usb-webcam drivers in the /drivers/usb/media/ directory which are approximately the same size as pwc.ko. i suppose it could be added to the debianized kernel source package, but since the original author asked to have it yanked from the mainline kernel and it is now itself forked and maintained outside of the kernel, i think this approach makes the most sense. at least for the time being. sean -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

immediate downtime for {master,murphy}.debian.org
Due to unforseen hardware issues with other machines we host, we need to take master and murphy offline, install them onto rails. We had planned on scheduling this, but other problematic hardware has forced to do this on short notice. The original rails sent with the machines didn't work in our rack, which is why they were never railed to begin with. We got new rails a while ago from HP, but had not scheduled time to install them, due to being busy with other things. I don't expect long downtime(after all, installing rails is not complex). The ghost of libc-dev
So, while discussing a bug in a -dev with the maintainer, recently, it reminded me to review an old thread from d-devel regarding the weird situation with libc-dev as a pure virtual package. The summary is this: *) The 'libc-dev' package is a pure virtual package, roughly meaning provides the headers and symlinks for C library development. *) The standard way of doing this today is to have a -dev package which needs libc headers Depend on 'libc6-dev | libc-dev' to avoid the situation of having only a pure-virtual package. *) This doesn't actually resolve the problem, except for some nasty hacks done by other things, because the normal situation is that only one libc*-dev package is available on a given architecture (some have ulibc), and that may not be libc6 (in fact, on many of the glibc-but-not-i386 architectures, it isn't, but each of these Provides: libc6-dev as a nasty hack workaround). *) The following solution was proposed a couple of times in the thread: Create a utility to populate a substvar for this (names suggested were 'devlibs:Depends' and 'libc-dev:Depends'). *) On further reflection, and re-reading other parts of the thread, I think it might be more useful to try to implement the following, and I would like feedback on whether this needs adjustment, or people think it would be a good idea. If it works, I can publish it as it's own tool, or try to get it included in the debhelper package (the latter probably being prefferable). dh_devincludes Searches the target package for *.h files, then searches each file found for #include lines. Attempts to resolve each include, checking first the package area, then the system library area. If the file is found in the package, it is ignored; if not found at all, it throws a warning. However, if the package is found in the system area, it checks the installed files information and extracts the name of the package which provides that file. The list of packages found is places into the substvar dev:Depends. Points I'm not sure on yet: * Does it need some way (a la shlibs) to resolve problems with what version of the -dev package is needed for this, or is this likely to be uncommon enough to expect the maintainer to override it where necessary? * Should it make any attempt to deal with non-C-family header file dependancies? If so, what other languages should it support, and what tools can it use to check them (cpp may be able to generate the lists for C-family tools as a simple shortcut, for example)? Supposedly, Build-Essential is only reliable for building Debian packages, so many -dev packages (those that use libc provided things like, oh, stdio.h) do have a legitimate reason to declare a Depends: relationship. -- Joel Aelwyn [EMAIL PROTECTED] ,''`. : :' : `. `' `- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Perhaps Debian is not the distribution for you, then. We have always prioritized constistency across the entire Debian OS over adherence to what upstream authors somehow chose to do. Obviously there's a balance. I wasn't looking for flames. I believe I did explain *why* debian was my distribution of choice even so. I maintain one package whose upstream author apparently thought that $PATH would be a good place to look for a system-wide configuration file. I changed that to look in /etc instead, which makes the configuration mechanism in Debian substantially different from upstream's. You may find this annoying, frustrating and confusing, but it's how Debian operates. And clearly, *this* is a scenario in which the upstream author was way outside the *unix* standard way of doing things. I'm not saying there's any clear-cut answer, other than to hope that both upstream developers and debian package maintainers use common sense. One distinction is in applications that the majority of users just want to work out of the box, and forget about. If I had to tweak the configuration of every application on my servers, I would be a frothing maniac. But there are some biggies, some very well known applications, that, when installed for any practical purpose, generally require somewhat sophisticated user oversight. Exim is one, Apache is another. Mysql is a third. I put in the time to figure out the debian way of doing Exim (and I'm still not sure I understand it, but at for now I have it working). There was a substantial amount of hair pulling and cursing due to the disparity between what I saw on my hard drive and what I saw in the online documentation. After that experience, when I installed apache and mysql, and saw they were doing their own thing as well, I decided I didn't want to learn go through the same frustration with applications I already knew pretty well. I removed the debian packages, and compiled my own from the upstream developers. Note that removing the debian packages did not remove all their config files and so forth, there was a fair bit of manual cleanup afterwards -- but I'm not using the stable distribution, so I don't expect perfection. As for you, Florian's snide comment: Just because the configuration file is called /etc/exim4/exim4.conf instead of /usr/exim/configure? Oh dear. No, it was the stuff like this that made me pull out my hair: domainlist local_domains = DEBCONFlocal_domainsDEBCONF How do I figure out where that DEBCONF stuff is coming from? What it means? Of course, it didn't help that during the install I didn't quite know what I was doing, so based on the advice of the install program I chose the big-file-install, which *was* what I wanted, but I forgot that I had done that, so when I went to look at the exim config and found, as the exim website told me I would find (because I was on debian), a gazillion little bitty config files, I got started figuring them out, editing them, and not realizing why it made no difference. Suggestion to exim package people: if someone chooses the big config file, don't even install the little ones. Anyway, the point was not to complain about exim... it sounds like other people are doing that somewhere else. The point was that *whenever* debian package maintainers re-implement a well-known distribution/config system, I *hope* that when users have to work with it they will discover, as I am sure anyone using Henning's package will, that the changes are clearly necessary -- an indisputable improvement. Now... my apologies for that interlude. I'll go back to lurking now. The former is better suited for large modifications and is generally more stable, whereas the latter offers a comfortable way to make smaller modifications but is more fragile and might break if modified extensively. . There are many people who ridicule your heroic efforts as an exercise in utterly pointless complexity, and, at the same time, many people demand even more tweaks to serve their needs. As I read his original message, you're confirming exactly what he was trying to drive at. If unsure, don't say Y feels awkwardly backwards to me as well, compared to If unsure, say N. Both sentences are, of course, logically equivalent if there are only two options, but I have to go through a small bit of additional processing to understand what I should do when presented with the first phrasing, and it leaves me with a vague wondering if I missed some other third choice. That's not even getting into the valid point raised by someone else, namely that it's unfortunately easy to read right past the don't in the if unsure, don't say Y phrasing. My eye, if I'm in a hurry, picks up on unsure and Y in that sentence and I can easily see myself not paying close enough attention to parse and understand all the connecting words. Certainly, that's my problem for not being attentive enough, but it's worth making it easier on the poor sap in a hurry. That effect is even worse when the phrasing is more drawn-out, like If X, you should not say Y. -- Russ Allbery ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
