Re: definition of use
On Tue, 2005-04-26 at 16:51 -0300, Margarita Manterola wrote: That's fine, but as you probably do realize, the word use is too wide and too unspecific. Having a license that doesn't state specifically what rights are or aren't granted is due to bring misunderstandings. I agree, in part. Primarily, the latter part. A recent(well, a month ago) example being some of the discussions that transpired on -legal and -devel regarding the license. If what you want to say is that the person gets all the benefits of owning the software (this is sort of weird, because software is kind of hard to 'own'), then you should say that. If the definition holds true, I did just that. However, your point is taken. As far as ownership is concerned, I see someone else already responded to that point. So, my suggestion is: rephrase the license to convey to every person the meaning you want it to convey. Then the problem ends. I have been thinking about this. Actually, I even thought about it before submitting the license to the OSI, but I figured I'd give 'use' a test and see who said what. Little or nothing was said. Although, the recent update I submitted did invoke a response with a concern of clarity, but that was only one mention, so there was not much cause for alarm until I ran into these threads. Anyways, I do plan to rephrase the license. It is better to be safe than sorry. It will mostly expand the first instance of 'use' to the previously cited definition. I think I will post it to debian-legal, as well as license-discuss, looking for criticisms. -- Regards, James William Pye -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: More DDTP problems
Hello folks, Like I proposed, I converted all CVS repository to Subversion[1]. 1. http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/ddtp/, svn://svn.debian.org/svn/ddtp/ svn+ssh://svn.debian.org/svn/ddtp/ Current layout of the repository is: - branches/ . a/ included on original source. We need to decide what to do with it; . unchecked/ branch with the last code available. This will be where we will do the check and copy the file to trunk/ - tags/ . b/ included on original source. We need to decide what to do with it; - trunk/ currently empty since we don't have any code checked. We really need to discuss how we will do the checking. One possible approuch could be use a derivation of how the kernel patches are now checked. I'll explain my proposal bellow: In each file we start to check, we add a footer commented (for example in C code): /* Checking: otavio; Started in: 2005-04-27 */ After we finished to check the code and have sure it doesn't have malicious code inside, we change it to: /* Sign-Off: otavio; Finished in: 2005-04-27 */ We should have, at last, two Signs to move the file to trunk. All this can be done by scripting (only the checking itself by a human) and looks fine to me. menu files in /usr/lib?
Hi developers, I was unable to find an answer online, so please allow me to ask here: why are Debian menu files in /usr/lib? They are clear-text and thus clearly architecture-independent. All; First let me apologize if this is the wrong thread to post this request. If I'm out of line let me know (preferrably without flaming me) I've been in talks with a group of folks interested in starting a new Linux/Debian based company. This new company to be successful will need the ability to pull off the following: 1) Creation of a new distro based on key specific features of various distros available today 2) Creation of new Linux games or vastly improvement on the Linux games available today Here's my questions: 1) How / where do I find and recruit top notch Linux kernel, application and game developers? 2) How would we best go about soliciting open source developers to help us out and what's the best way to manage these type of development processes ? Any tips, thoughts, past experiences, warnings, etc would be very helpful. Thanks in advance for any advice you may have for me. [EMAIL PROTECTED] It would be really handy to have archives of the debian mailing lists available as mbox archives. The correct solution, until someone gets around to exporting the mboxes, is to talk/grumble/whine about wanting the archive for some specific month and list, where developers can hear you. (IRC works, a mailing list might work.) Eventually someone will scp the relevant file and send it to you in some way, or give you shell access to a box with the archives so you can run a MUA right there. It's the upstream name. For whatever reason, Trolltech has chosen different names for each major release: Qt1: qt Qt2: qt-x11 Qt3: qt-x11-free Qt4: qt-x11-opensource Qt5 will probably be qt-x11-foss or qt-x11-freeasinspeech or something equally annoying. That's a pretty redundant designation for something in Debian main, don't you think? I'd probably go with qt4 or libqt4 or qt4-x11 for the source package name. I was thinking about naming it qt4-x11, but I'm not sure it's worth deviating from upstream. Sure it is: qt4-x11 tells people what it is, and qt-x11-opensource is loopy. There's no obligation to keep the source package name the same as the upstream tarball name. -- Steve Langasek postmodern programmer signature.asc Description: Digital signature
