Packaging audit trail mechanism (was: Ubuntu and its appropriation of Debian maintainers)
On 5/2/05, Matt Zimmerman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Another option would be to leave the source package maintainer the same (to retain proper credit, etc.), but override the binary package maintainer during the build (to reflect that it is a different build, and also display a more appropriate name in apt-cache show etc.). What do you think about this approach? Personally, when I rebuild a package that might get handed to someone else -- even if I didn't touch the source, but am rebuilding in a known environment so I can reproduce it later -- I change the Maintainer field to an e-mail address that reaches me, and add a debian/changelog entry with an explanation of why it was rebuilt and an appropriate suffix on the version number. Otherwise, I'm risking: 1) Implying that the Debian maintainer is part of my organization, since it appears that he/she was the last person to touch the package; 2) Suggesting that bug reports should be sent directly to the Debian maintainer and/or BTS, possibly annoying him/her and probably leaving me and my organization out of an interaction that we ought to know about; 3) Violating some licenses (the GPL, for instance), at least in spirit, by making it hard to determine who is responsible for meeting obligations to provide source code (and, again at least in spirit, detailed instructions about reproducing the build environment). When I am distributing unaltered Debian source packages alone, or bit-exact copies of Debian binary packages, I don't worry as much about these things. Actually, in principle I ought to have a cache of the source packages associated with all binary packages I distribute, although for one-offs I usually assume I can get it from snapshot.debian.net if I need it. (snapshot has saved my bacon more than once -- thank you Ukai-san and FSIJ!) If I had Ubuntu's resources, I'd handle it differently. Relying on people (or even an automated process) to touch up debian/control and debian/changelog on rebuild is so 1990's. A Debian upload isn't acceptable without a signed changes file, and an autobuilt package doesn't make it onto ftpmaster without a signed buildd log (as I understand it, anyway). Soon it will be practical to install only signed binary packages (what gets signed in apt 0.6, actually? md5sums?) on a Debian / Debian-derived system. I would like to see all binary packages accompanied by information equivalent to the contents of a changes file, signed in a way that allows bug reporting tools to check the chain of trust and choose a bug report destination accordingly. I believe that the right way to handle this (no, I don't have code in my back pocket -- yet) is to use a token for package integrity that can be multiply signed, and on which those signatures can be revoked, so that an organization can easily delegate release engineering / update tracking to an internal guru or a consultant they trust, or spread it across multiple roles and automated processes. These integrity tokens should be distributed using a mechanism that makes it easy to check the current signature set of the token and to add and revoke signatures in any order, and this mechanism should be proven to scale to millions of tokens with thousands of signatures on each. Stating it this way should make it obvious that I have in mind using single-use GPG keys as integrity tokens and distributing them with a network of keyservers. (Not, obviously, the public keyservers, on which keys that represent things rather than people have no place.) Single-use keys would be generated at the conclusion of the package build cycle, similar to a changes file except one per .deb. The sha1sums of the .deb and .dsc would appear in the key's userid, and full vital data for the binary package, others built in the same dpkg-buildpackage run, and the source from which it was built go in, say, the Notation field for the self-signature. The sha1sum of a .deb can thus be used to look up sha1sums for its parent source and its sibling .debs, and given an sha1sum index to snapshot.debian.net or the Debian derivative's equivalent, the single-use public key is a reliable clue to fetch the packages themselves. The sha1sum of the .dsc is also in the userid to make it easy to find other binary packages built from the same source, which facilitates use cases like the M out of N security experts mentioned below, in which some roleplayers' auditing of packages built from the same source is good enough. Once the public half of the key is self-signed with vital data embedded, the private half is discarded, and the public half is uploaded to the package keyserver network. Thereafter, its primary function is to accumulate signatures (and revocations), which represent the audit trail through whatever processes, human and automated, anyone who cares to use the package sees fit. (Note that the key isn't used to sign anything but itself, and the sha1sums in its userid make leakage of the private key

I'm sure the GPL actually defines what _they_ mean by it... The GPL simply defers to copyright law to define derivative work. (most jurisdictions') copyright law defines derivative work as a work that, being a novel intellectual creation by itself, results in a transformation of another (original) work, the key word being transformation. This is a part of copyright law originally thought for controlling instrument re-arranging of musical works, translations of a work from a language to another, and sequels and prequels re-using characters from a literary/theatrical work. Anyway, this is a very foggy issue, because the GPL uses thoughout the license text the expression work based on the Program (as opposed to the [legally-defined] expression derivative work), which it defines in the following (contradictory) phrase of section 0, caput: ''a work based on the Program means either the Program or any derivative work under copyright law: that is to say, a work containing the Program or a portion of it, either verbatim or with modifications and/or translated into another language.'' Notice that before the colon, it gives one definition; after the colon, it gives another definition (a wrong one, considering that the that is to say introduces an explanatory part of the phrase, and that the explanation differs from the copyright law definition, and that copyright laws vary with jurisdictions, etc). This can be contrasted with the infamous mere aggregation clause, section 2, paragraph 3: ''In addition, mere aggregation of another work not based on the Program with the Program (or with a work based on the Program) on a volume of a storage or distribution medium does not bring the other work under the scope of this License.'', and with the other occurences of the (legally-defined) expression derivative work in the GPL, after section 0: The first one in section 2, paragraph 2: ''the intent [of this section of the GPL, section 2] is to exercise the right to control the distribution of derivative or collective works based on the Program'' [braces mine]; The second one in section 5: ''You are not required to accept this License, since you have not signed it. However, nothing else grants you permission to modify or distribute the Program or its derivative works.''; this one, combined with the mere aggregation clause, can be construed as an authorization to distribute collective works containing the GPL'd work; And the last one in section 10: ''Our decision [on licensing any FSF-owned software under different terms] will be guided by the two goals of preserving the free status of all derivatives of our free software and of promoting the sharing and reuse of software generally'' [braces mine]; again, without mentioning the collective works, this can be combined with the mere aggregation clause as a confirmation of the authorization to distribute collective works containing the GPL'd work. And yes, I noticed that the first one kind of contradicts the other two, too. I might add that claiming a program that uses a library's published API is a derived work is a bit shaky from the get-go. If you actually cut and paste code from the library into your program, it's a lot more clear-cut. Yes, in the former case there was no transformation of the library's source code; in the latter, there was. We talk about APIs on forums like -legal to save time, because everybody (supposedly) knows what we're talking about there. They aren't directly relevant, it's just that certain aspects of program design will normally have certain legal implications because that's how those things are normally implemented. Changing static linking to dynamic, or replacing a linker call with a dlopen() call, *always* has precisely *zero* effect on whether something is a derivative work or not. A work is created derivative, or not, at the time of inception. For source code, this is the time Yes! I could not agree more. when the code is written. The way in which it is compiled is irrelevant. For a binary, this is the time when the binary is built and linked. A statically linked binary is a derivative work of I disagree here: there is no novel intellectual work involved in building/linking a binary. A binary can be, at most, a collective (anthology) work, and this makes a difference in some point in time. Especially if the GPL is involved. everything it links because it contains verbatim copies of those things. Every binary, static, dynamic, or other, is a derivative of everything that any part of its source was derived from. Nope. Collective. No intellectually-novel transformation was applied, other than (maybe)

I think Peter has it right, and I'd like to know what grounds there may be to demur. See my recent posts to debian-legal archives for US case law on the matter, which I (IANAL) would summarize as published APIs are not copyrightable in their role as 'methods of operation' as distinct from their role as creative expression. It's kind of an odd stance for the law to have arrived at -- a difference of usage changes not just whether an act of copying is an infringement but whether the copied material is copyrightable at all. But it makes sense in the context of the prescribed sequence of legal analysis, in which recognizing a protected use too late in the sequence leaves the copier open to lawsuits de novo for subsequent acts of copying the same material. The last time I know of that the US Supreme Court looked at the issue -- an appeal from Lotus Development Corporation v. Borland International, Inc.,49 F.3d 807 (1995) -- they deadlocked 4-4 in one justice's absence. The court transcript is fascinating. The latest and greatest analysis at circuit court level appears to be Lexmark v. Static Control (2004). Yes, the US is not the world. Other legal systems are perfectly within their rights to arrive at different conclusions, and the Berne Convention is far from explicit on the matter. But what actual grounds are there for a belief that some particular country's legal system would rule that the arm's-length use of a published API creates a derivative work? Chapter and verse, folks; even if precedents are not law in your legal system, they're a lot more reliable than reasoning outside a courtroom with no judge in sight. Changing static linking to dynamic, or replacing a linker call with a dlopen() call, *always* has precisely *zero* effect on whether something is a derivative work or not. A work is created derivative, or not, at the time of inception. For source code, this is the time when the code is written. The way in which it is compiled is irrelevant. Every binary, static, dynamic, or other, is a derivative of everything that any part of its source was derived from. I do not think that the binary part of this analysis is correct in any country that implements the Berne Convention. My rebuttal is long enough without the case law references, but you can find them all in the debian-legal archives. Whether statically linked or provided as multiple dynamically linked files, a program composed of separately identifiable independent works of authorship is a collection (in some countries' implementation, compilation) as defined in Article 2 Section 5. Derivative works are defined in Article 2 Section 3 to be [t]ranslations, adaptations, arrangements of music and other alterations of a literary or artistic work. Otherwise, I'm risking: I understand your motivation, but I don't think this is practical when working on the scale of an entire distribution. A key reason why many new distributions derive from an existing one is that they can use most of the packages unchanged, and modify only the ones which are interesting in the light of their particular goals. When I am distributing unaltered Debian source packages alone, or bit-exact copies of Debian binary packages, I don't worry as much about these things. Actually, in principle I ought to have a cache of the source packages associated with all binary packages I distribute, You should definitely maintain a copy of the source, in order to be able to meet licensing obligations. If I had Ubuntu's resources, I'd handle it differently. I would like to see all binary packages accompanied by information equivalent to the contents of a changes file, signed in a way that allows bug reporting tools to check the chain of trust and choose a bug report destination accordingly. apt 0.6 authenticates package archives (via the Release file); it won't provide a basis for this kind of functionality. -- - mdz -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Derived distributions and the Maintainer: field
On Mon, May 02, 2005 at 11:56:45AM -0500, Adam Majer wrote: Matt Zimmerman wrote: The question of whether modified source should have the Maintainer field changed is a reasonable subject for discussion, but in your particular case, both of the source packages listed at https://launchpad.ubuntu.com/people/adamm/+packages are identical to those in Debian. True. But Ubuntu is a *different* distribution from Debian. If Ubuntu was a Debian subproject, then I see no problem in keeping Maintainer fields as is. There are over 100 distributions listed on DistroWatch as being derived from Debian. Knoppix, MEPIS, Morphix, Xandros and other popular distributions are based on Debian (including Ubuntu, of course). All of these distributions ship modified packages to some extent, but there is currently no consistent policy for changing the Maintainer field, or otherwise representing the origin of the packages. If we're to set some guidelines for this, we should involve more parties than only Debian and Ubuntu. I think all other distributions based on Debian do change the Maintainer field. Having looked only briefly, I can say that this is not true in general. If you examine only the distributions I mentioned above, you will find source and binary packages, modified and unmodified, rebuilt binaries or Debian binaries, with modified and unmodified Maintainer fields. If Ubuntu maintainers wish to recognize Debian maintainers for their work, I would welcome that (see below). But the maintainer field should only reference Ubuntu project. The problems I see is in discussions (flamewars?) merits of Ubuntu vs. Debian. I've seen in many places ignorant people saying, Most maintainers from Debian are now in Ubuntu, or Debian is dead. Ubuntu is the future. Or the opposites from the other side. I didn't know where this was coming from until I found myself on Ubuntu's website as a maintainer. Honestly, I don't think that this has anything to do with the Maintainer field, or with the mention of your name on the Launchpad website (this kind of sentiment predates that website by a wide margin). In general, this kind of misinformed opinion has no basis in fact whatsoever. Naysayers have been predicting the imminent death of Debian for many years, and many distributions (through no fault of their own) have been named its successor by virtue of public opinion. I think that with your explanation, though, we are closer to the heart of the matter. The issue at hand seems to have less to do with package metadata than with the public's interpretation of the relationship between Debian and Ubuntu. The Ubuntu website is quite clear on this point, stating that we seek to cooperate and coexist with Debian, to our mutual benefit. We do our best to present this image to the public, but there is little that anyone can do to directly address the issue of the ill-informed, because by their very nature, they are not paying attention to the information already at their disposal. I'm the maintainer of lpr which is from OpenBSD. OpenBSD is acknowledged in the sources and README.Debian, but I do not set the maintainer field to point to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or similar. The relationship between Debian and its derivatives, I think you'll agree, is quite different than that which exists between Debian and the upstream projects which produce most of its code. There is quite a lot more to the package Maintainer: field than report bugs here. In fact, reporting bugs directly to the maintainer is generally discouraged, in favor of bug tracking systems. It also means this is the person who is most directly responsible for the ongoing maintenance of this package, this is the person who is most knowledgeable about the present and future state of this package, and similar things. It is bigger than just that one website as Maintainer: field in most packages that are part of Ubuntu is left same from Debian. I sent the email to debian-devel maybe because it affects Debian Developers. There is much information in the world which affects Debian developers, but the usual reason for contacting debian-devel is to receive responses from Debian developers. If your intent was to propose that Ubuntu should take some action, wouldn't it have been logical to solicit a response from Ubuntu? http://people.ubuntulinux.org/~cjwatson/germinate-warty-output/all+extra.sources I see many debian mailing lists... Is it right for a different distribution to use Debian's support structures? In some cases, yes, there are support structures which can be shared by derived distributions and their upstream distributions, to the benefit of all involved. However, I do not see the Maintainer field primarily as a support structure. Ubuntu already goes to some lengths (significantly farther than other Debian derivatives) to direct bug reports to Ubuntu, rather than to Debian. We do this through reportbug, our website and documentation, and even

I can only speak for Ubuntu, but it is of course not our intention to claim in any way that Debian developers are necessarily Ubuntu deveopers. Personally, I did not get that impression from the web page that started this thread, but I can understand your perspective, and would like to know if there are specific changes to the page which would help you to feel more comfortable about your name being present on them. I think that it makes sense for us to reflect the fact that Ubuntu uses packages which were originally developed, and continue to be maintained, by the Debian community. This is a strong point for both communities: sharing of code is one of the core principles which allows Debian and Ubuntu to produce the work that they do. Allow me to explain a bit about the purpose of this application. This portion of the Launchpad application, when it is completed, will provide a composite index of all of the packages available in Ubuntu and in Debian, and link together various information about them. Each Debian package will correspond to a page on the site, and it will display (among other information about the package) the name of its maintainer, regardless of the status of the package in Ubuntu. This information will be heavily cross-referenced with other resources, so that (for example), a Debian maintainer will be able to visit the site, and see all of their packages, which versions are present in various Ubuntu and Debian releases, any patches applied in Ubuntu relative to Debian, relevant Ubuntu bug reports and other resources. The purpose of this tool is to allow for more efficient collaboration, both within Ubuntu and Debian, and between Ubuntu and Debian. There will be distinct web pages for the Debian and Ubuntu contexts for these packages, even if the source package itself is bit-for-bit identical. If it would be desirable to change the way that this information is presented, this is something that can be discussed between the Launchpad developers and the Debian community. I'm CCing Kiko, who can be a point of contact for the Launchpad project. Re: Derived distributions and the Maintainer: field
Perhaps it would help if I explained the current mode of operation for Ubuntu, as compared with other Debian derivatives. At the end of this message, I'll restate the questions at hand in this context. Ubuntu is a distribution based on Debian. 1. Most of the source packages in Ubuntu are inherited from Debian unchanged (example: tetex-base). 2. Some source packages in Ubuntu are modified relative to Debian. These are assigned a version number of the form Debian version numberubuntuubuntu revision number. Of those which are modified, in most cases the modifications are trivial, such as a library transition, Python transition or other dependency change (example: python-adns, http://people.ubuntu.com/~scott/patches/python-adns/python-adns_1.0.0-6ubuntu3.patch). In some cases, the packages are modified more extensively (example: several d-i components, such as partman http://people.ubuntu.com/~scott/patches/partman-auto/partman-auto_41ubuntu1.patch). 3. A small number of packages are created specifically for Ubuntu. These are assigned standard version numbers. Of those, some have already been adopted by Debian (example: pmount), some are expected to be adopted by Debian at some point in the future (example: xorg), and some are not expected to be used in a Debian context (example: ubuntu-artwork). Currently, only packages in category 3 are assigned a Maintainer field by Ubuntu. The question has been raised about what should be done about packages in categories 1 and 2. In order to override the Maintainer field in a source package, a new version of the source package would have to be created. This would have to be done each time a new source package (or a new version) is inherited from Debian. Therefore, my opinion is that changing the Maintainer field on otherwise-unmodified source packages is too costly for derivatives in general. The situation for binary packages is somewhat simpler, at least in the case of Ubuntu. In all three cases, Ubuntu builds the source packages in an Ubuntu build environment to produce the binaries that we actually distribute to users. This means that it would be fairly straightforward for Ubuntu to override the Maintainer field in binary packages (regardless of whether the source is modified), given a consensus that this is the right thing to do. Of course, there are many Debian derivatives which do not build most packages, instead using binary packages provided by Debian, and for them it would be a burden to do the same. However, it could be argued that since they are using bit-for-bit identical binaries, it is reasonable for the Maintainer field to remain unchanged as well. Given the above, the relevant questions would seem to be: If a binary package is built by a third party from unmodified Debian sources, should its Maintainer field be kept the same as the source package, or set to the name and address of the third party? Should Debian-derived distributions change the Maintainer field in source packages which are modified relative to Debian? If so, should this be done in all cases, or only if the modifications are non-trivial? I am interested in responses to these two questions from the Debian community. -- - mdz signature.asc Description: Digital signature
