Debian kernels
The current Debian kernels have SE Linux compiled in, but not in a form that is usable. The option CONFIG_AUDIT needs to be enabled to allow SE Linux access denials to be logged, without this it is impossible to use SE Linux. While making such changes enabling the option CONFIG_AUDITSYSCALL would be useful, this enables auditing of the system calls performed by applications. Using this requires the auditd package to be installed (*). http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/code/download5.cfm There is also a patch to 2.6.11 that changes the checks for executable memory which is needed to make a Debian SE Linux system usable. It's available at the above URL and should be in 2.6.12. It would be good if this patch could be included into a Debian 2.6.11 kernel package to enable testing and development of SE Linux on Debian. (*) I don't have time to take on another package at the moment. But I would be happy to help someone who wants to package auditd. -- http://www.coker.com.au/selinux/ My NSA Security Enhanced Linux packages http://www.coker.com.au/bonnie++/ Bonnie++ hard drive benchmark http://www.coker.com.au/postal/Postal SMTP/POP benchmark http://www.coker.com.au/~russell/ My home page -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. please help a poor student
Note- I began liking debian after i heard of it. Please help this poor student by mailing me the CDs if you have Dear Sir/Madam, I am Ratikanta Rath from Angul(Orissa). I am a below middle-class(above poverty) boy living in a village of Jarasigha, near Angul town. Two months ago, I heard of linux and I became interested in it after I heard of it from my friend. He described its features in a manner which made me to lay awake whole night. I have a very low-end computer with 5GB hard disk and 122MB RAM. It can boot from CDROM. I am running WinXP Pro successfully on it. I can not upgrade my PC due to money problems. My friend gave me a live CD and i liked it. It was BhavyaOS from November 2003 issue of LFY(I do not even have enough money to buy magazines). I now wanted a user friendly, stable and fast Linux. So I wanted a good, user friendly, stable linux OS which can work smoothly on my machine without crashing like WinXP Pro. But I could not find a good, stable distribution having very good GUI for a begginner which could run on 122.8MB of RAM. I don't have money either for buying. Here there is no body to help and I don't know of any linux user who can help other than my friend who can not help. I don't have internet access. Please help this poor student who wants to learn linux by mailing me some good linux distribution CDs which can run on 122.8 RAM. I am writing this email from an internet cafe from my friends email adress for requesting some well-known kind persons for mailing me some CDs as I can't buy them and they are sold in Angul very costly (Rs 500 per distro). If you can understand my situation please mail me some old distros lying in your house. I am soory if i caused any trouble to you. As far as xmessage, that is in the xbase-clients package, an indirect dependency. Lintian also gave the same warning, but I setup an override to suppress the warning. Is this OK? What about the other files that it says are not there? 2) Should I do anything about the timestamp warnings on config.guess and config.sub? 3) I already discussed the warning about depending on automake and autoconf with Anibal and he seems to think it is justified. This is almost never a good idea, as the package should run autoconf or automake on the source tree before the source package is built. There's lots of debate about this one. If your package uses horrible macros and kludges to make everything work, you may wish to play it cautious and manually run the same version of autoconf upstream uses. If it doesn't, in my view it's the responsibility of the autoconf maintainer to ensure that what he packages doesn't break arbitrary documented features. The big problem was autoconf 2.13 - 2.5x, but it's easy enough to make sure you run the correct one of those. automake1.x seems reasonable to depend on, since the maintainer has provided multiple versioned packages, so you can reasonably expect the API not to change within a single package. W: toshutils; The file config.guess contains a timestamp line that is less than 2002. The autoconf file shown above contains a timestamp variable that has a year that is less than 2002. Build-depend on autotools-dev, and copy /usr/share/misc/config.guess and config.sub into place at build time. ln -fs also works. It's a very light build dep, so there's not much point in patching the right files into the source diff.gz. (However, note that if you don't want to bloat your diff.gz you may wish to mv the old files out of the way, and mv them back in your 'clean' target.) non-free to main, but buildds not picking up?
My ggobi package recently made it from non-free/math to math (as the ATT license was replaced by the CPL, same as for graphviz). However, as shown by igloo's script, buildds are not picking it up: http://people.debian.org/~igloo/package-status.php?package=ggobi Is there something I need to do / can do to trigger builds? Please CC me on replies. I don't think a dependency on automake and autoconf are almost always bad ideas. It makes the build more unpredictable, which is generally a bad thing. You should just run automake and/or autoconf on the unpacked source and ship it in the .diff.gz. An extra 2K won't hurt. W: toshutils; The file config.guess contains a timestamp line that is less than 2002. The autoconf file shown above contains a timestamp variable that has a year that is less than 2002. This means you need to update your autoconf files, as the current files will make it hard for your package to auto-build. W: toshutils; The file config.sub contains a timestamp line that is less than 2002. Build-depend on autotools-dev, and copy /usr/share/misc/config.guess and config.sub into place at build time. ln -fs also works. It's a very light build dep, so there's not much point in patching the right files into the source diff.gz. (However, note that if you don't want to bloat your diff.gz you may wish to mv the old files out of the way, and mv them back in your 'clean' target.) W: toshutils; The command xmessage -timeout 10 `fan -f` listed in a menu file does not exist. W: toshutils; The command xmessage -timeout 10 `fan -n` listed in a menu file does not exist. W: toshutils; The command xmessage -timeout 10 `fan` listed in a menu file does not exist. Those seem pretty legitimate, although there's an argument to be made that menu should provide a syntax for this type of status display, so individual apps don't have to do it by hand. We are going to tolerate the newly added symbols that should have resulted in an soname change. Not as a habit though. * Restore the static builds for sarge, we can't be easily certain of no package, or no build script they use, doing something stupid that relies on them, even tangentially. Too late to test that now, so be on notice, its a sign-o-the-times for etch. * New artwork. See below. * Forge the internal version number to be wx2.4.2 / wxPy2.4.2.4 for this release, to be 100% compatible with the binaries already in testing. Some packages (boa-constructor being the first reported) check this at runtime and cannot tolerate a library version upgrade without modification to their own code. This is an issue to resolve after the freeze.
