Re: first Room draft.

2005-06-03 Thread Christian Perrier
Bon, qui amène bérêts, baguettes, accordeon et tout le toutim pour LA
chambre française de Debconf ? :-)

I'm almost done with the room placement. This is a *DRAFT*, please take
into account that as I receive comments, I might make changes to it, don't
take it as if it were written in stone.

You can see who you've been placed with at:
 http://www.marga.com.ar/~marga/debconf-rooms.html

(The HTML is a bit big, sorry about that).

My default rule for placement was grouping by country. Some people don't
like this default rule and would like to intermix more with people from
other countries. If that is your case, please let me know, and I'll
 rearrange.

Some explanations to those that might not be aware: we have two types of
 rooms:
 a) big rooms, that can hold 5 or 6 people, and have a bathroom and a
small kitchen. These rooms come with 2 beds each.
 b) smaller rooms, that can hold 2 or 3 people, and are grouped in groups of
2, 3 or 4. Each group shares a bathroom and a kitchen. So, this rooms
have a bit more privacy for sleeping, but you might end up sharing the
bathroom with more people. These rooms come with 1 bed per room.

Some people hadn't yet confirmed when I made the list, but assured me that
they would confirm, those are marked (unconfirmed). If you are marked
unconfirmed, please _DO_ confirm your dates.

If you are not in the list it might be either because you didn't confirm,
or because I made a mistake. In either case, please let me know about it.

And if in doubt, please let me know about it :).

I hope I have fulfilled most of everyone's wishes.

The library should go in /usr/lib.

I read the FHS standard and even then I am unable to figure out which is
a better place.

Make also sure that you read

The Debian New Maintainers Guide
http://www.debian.org/doc/devel-manuals#maint-guide

The Debian Developers Reference
http://www.debian.org/doc/devel-manuals#devref

And, especially important for your situation since you are building
a library:
The Debian Library Packaging guide
http://www.netfort.gr.jp/~dancer/column/libpkg-guide/libpkg-guide.html

I have collected these and some additional links at
http://littletux.homelinux.org//links.php?cat=621

Some additional hints:
- You have to divide the package in a library package and a -dev
  package.
- You said you get a file called libfortranposix.so; this is usually
only a link provided by the -dev package which points to the actual
library. The -dev package also contains the header files, for example.
- The actual library must have a SONAME prefix (e.g.
libfortranposix.so.1). This file is contained in the actual
  library package.

Best Regards,

Andreas

dhcp-client package in sarge

2005-06-03 Thread Nicolas Kreft

Hi List!

Is it for a special reason that the default dhcp-client
in sarge is ancient (version 2.0pl5)?

This client does not follow the RFC correctly. When
it does a dhcpdiscover and the interface has been
previously configured with some ip address it is still
using that ip for the dhcpdiscover. This causes the
dhcp server (3.0.2) on my network to abandon that ip address.

The 3.x series has been released nearly 4 years ago,
why not make it the default?

regards,
Nicolas

As lincity-ng is more or less an almost new game and more resource demanding

I had the same problem with dhclient. I was mounting root over NFS

the deconfiguring of the interface was happening in a script before
dhclient did it's magic. I built pump to solve the problem.

IIRC, the issue isn't fixed in newer versions of dhclient, but others

changing distribution names to achieve world domination

2005-06-03 Thread Luis Matos

voxvirus @ ptnet realize that people are not well informed about debian.
So, for marketing strategy we have a small proposition to the naming
scheme, for achieving world domination:

stable - server
testing - desktop
unstable - game_arena
experimental - winxp

the choices are obvious:

stable is a server dedicated system, stable, well constructed and
infallible.

testing is an updated system, stable enought .
unstable is bleeding edge, new techology, for teenage geeks .

experimental is ... well ... crappy ... unstable ... crashing ...
unoying system. It can crash, it can work (we can put this part for
gaming?).

just a funny note.

Re: proficiency-level tag for debian packages

2005-06-03 Thread Enrico Zini

On the other hand, a package like nmap might not be something my
Grandma would be wanting to use every day, and thus it might be better
to have a higher proficiency-level rating for such a package.

The motivation for such a thing is that it would make it possible for
package-management tools to operate in an easy mode which would only
display (or display in a separate category) packages which have a
proficiency-rating x. This would be very handy in that it would
permit using Debian and an apt frontend like synaptic to make it easy
for more-or-less computer-illiterate people to install new packages
which match their skill-level, without having to wade through hundreds
of libraries and technical tools which they would never use.

During Debtags[1] meditation, I've been thinking about this a lot.
However, it's hard to measure easyness universally enough. For
example, I consider openoffice more complicated than abiword, which is
more complicated than gedit, for writing text. However, I consider
gedit more complicated than abiword, which is more complicated than
openoffice, for formatting text.

One could say that tuxpaint is simpler than gimp. A graphic designer
probably finds gimp to be easier to use than tuxpaint for photo-editing,
though.

And yet, one can say that emacs is the easiest of it all, because you
just have to learn one tool to do everything :)

So, my idea on this for Debtags is to delegate this kind of
categorization to Custom Debian Distributions. This is because CDDs
know who their users are, and know what's appropriate and what's
complicated for them.

I consider this to be a very good way of having all possibly
controversial categorization (easyness, beauty, appropriateness,
politeness...) to have a chance of existing when they are needed,
without trying to undergo the impossible (or dubious) task of taking
decisions that pretend being universal when they cannot be.

If you are interested in helping on this, please join
[EMAIL PROTECTED] [2], although it's not clear yet
how to properly implement CDD-specific tagging and it could be quite a
complicated first task to pick up.

Ciao,

Enrico

Debian does, in fact, treat most of its upstreams precisely this way.
Debian publishes a large portion of its changes primarily in the form of
monolithic diffs relative to upstream source. The last time I saw figures,
the usage of dpatch, cdbs, etc. was rising, but not yet the standard
operating procedure.

I know it has been said before, but that is not true. For packages with
active upstream, I always send individual patches upstream. For packages
like mysql-admin, or mysql-query-browser, there is no dpatch, etc. used
because that would be inefficient. Upstream is very fast at fixing
things and the few, small patches that there are, can be fixed by hand.
For vast majority of cases, the huge .diff.gz patch is for the /debian
directory and sometimes to update the config.sub and config.guess files.
I don't think upstream would wade though .diff.gz files anyway. Huge
Debian patches like that just make the work of the maintainers, not
upstream, more difficult.

Low usage statistics for dpatch, cdbs, etc. don't imply that upstream
doesn't get manageable patches.

- Adam

PS. We already saw that a fork or derivative of upstream can warp into
something that will waste a lot of man hours to port with the Apple's
browser (derivative of Konqueror). Their huge patch cannot be easily
incorporated to the new version of Konqueror meaning that Apple, not
KDE, will be wasting a lot of their time porting that patch to the new
versions of the browser. Similarly for non-Ubuntu specific changes, it
is in Ubuntu's interrest (not necessarly Debian's) to have those patches
accepted in Debian. I think this is especially true for those critical,
base packages.

im-switch framework proposal

2005-06-03 Thread Kenshi Muto
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

Today I did ITP im-switch package, to make switching input method or
defining a default more easy.

Here is a proposal for input method maintainers and users.
Any comments are welcome.

(This proposal is translated by Osamu Aoki, Thank you.)
- -
im-switch framework proposal

im-swich is the input method (IM) framework partially ported from
FedraCore to Debian.

Debian offers multiple backend input methods (XIM, IMmodule, ...).
Due to this freedom of choice, there is no easy choice for the default
input method and each end user was required to edit environment
varriables and configuration files such as ~/.xsession.

The input method package which uses im-switch framework becomes one of
the alternative under the im-switch. This framework enables
auto-selection of default input method which can be configured by the
`im-switch' command. One notable feature of im-swich is this system
offers both global selection and user level selection.

Current tentative packages for im-switch can be obtained by including
following lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://kmuto.jp/debian/mtu unstable main
deb-src http://kmuto.jp/debian/mtu unstable main

(Since there are many other unrelated packages, you should remove
these lines once you install im-switch.)

Then you run sudo apt-get install im-switch.

There are updated uim (needs uim-xim~uim-
gtk2.0), skkinput, kinput2, atokx2 (iiimgcf) which incorporated im-switch
framework for sample implementation.

Development version is available under svn and accessible anonymously.

svn checkout http://kmuto.jp/svn/im-switch/trunk im-switch

* List of all available IM.: im-switch -l

$ im-switch -l
You have ja_JP setup in /home/kmuto/.xinput.d.

  im-switch -s IM name

# im-switch -s uim_skk
Using `/etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/uim_skk' to provide `xinput-ja_JP'.

* Change IM for a user: under non-user privilege,
 im-switch -s IM name

$ im-switch -s uim_skk

If you select none, im-switch will be disabled, i.e., no setting is
provided by im-switch for XIM nor IMmodule.

* for maintainers

Each input method package places package specific parameter file in
/etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/ (Samples are available under
/usr/share/doc/im-switch/sample/). If canna is used as the backend
IM, kinput2-canna provides following configuration files:

XIM=kinput2- The value for [EMAIL PROTECTED]
XIM_PROGRAM=/usr/X11R6/bin/kinput2-canna - Full path of the program started
for XIM
XIM_ARGS=+xim- Argument for XIM
GTK_IM_MODULE= - The value for IMmodule used by
GTK+
DEPENDS=canna - The package name which this IM
requires

If the value is empty, that parameter is not used. DEPENDS can lists
multiple packages using ,(require both packages) or | (require
either packages). This DEPENDS does not auto install these packages
but im-switch issues warning when these are not available.

This is Bourne Shell script. You can write program or export
environment variables. Be careful on bashism. You should check script
under dash.

When input method requires multiple backend, you may provide multiple
files. Please use naming convention method name_backend name.

You register alternative in postinst of the package as:

update-alternatives \
--install /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/ja_JP xinput-ja_JP \
/etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/kinput2-canna 60

You remove alternative in prerm of the package as:

update-alternatives --remove xinput-ja_JP /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/kinput2-canna

The name of alternative is xinput-language name. (Please do not put
encoding name such as EUC-JP or UTF-8).

In postinst, symbolic link is created as
/etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/language name.

Here, priority is set to 60. Tentative policy for priority is:

* 60: Default backend
* 50: Standard priority
* 10: reserved for none (No action)
* 10: Experimental IM (Not recommended for the end users)

This setting is activated through /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90im-switch. In
this script, the user's ~/.xinput.d/language name is searched first.
When it does not exist, /etc/X11/xinput.d/language name is
searched. (There are more complication as seen in 90im-switch but
please assume this for Debian). Based on the selected configuration

applications, just have a look at Alioth's project:

http://cvs.alioth.debian.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/~checkout~/libcommons-fileupload-java/debian/rules?rev=1.8content-type=text/plaincvsroot=pkg-java

Here is the debian/rules file for libcommons-fileupload-java:

#!/usr/bin/make -f
# debian/rules for Commons Fileupload (uses CDBS)

include /usr/share/cdbs/1/rules/debhelper.mk
include /usr/share/cdbs/1/class/ant.mk
include /usr/share/cdbs/1/rules/simple-patchsys.mk

JAVA_HOME_DIRS   := /usr/lib/kaffe
ANT_HOME := /usr/share/ant1.6
DEB_JARS := servlet-2.3 /usr/share/ant1.6/lib/ant-launcher.jar
DEB_ANT_COMPILER := jikes

Some years ago when the release of sarge was supposed to be imminent
it was decided not to adopt dhcp3 as the default because there wouldn't be
enough time to adjust to it before the release. Then the release was
delayed for a couple of years; meanwhile the maintainers of dhcp and dhcp3
have been busy with other things.

Why cdbs? I was under the impression that many people disliked/wer
uncomfortable with it because of the complex way in which it employs
makefiles. Wouldn't your packages be more accessible (in terms of other
developers being able to patch/fix bugs/etc.) in a more universal
 format?

I agree. A java policy should talk about how java packages should interact
once installed. But stay the hell away from how they are built.

As an example, debhelper, while being very useful for maintainers, is not

such proposals, but we have very limited developer resources compared to
  Debian.

Well, it's visible that Ubuntu developers try to cooperate with DD according
to their resources, which is something really nice to see. There are some
technical or communication details which need to be resolved, like which
SCM's have to be used for packaging and/or development, where, how to branch
certain specific derivations if any, and the like. If a consensus point of
these is reached, which could be resolved on a per-team basis (e.g. like
gnome, d-i teams) I see no big obstacles for DD's and other children
distributons developers (I don't mean Ubuntu's ones only here) to cooperate
on alioth svn, arch, darcs and so on repos.
Hi George and others,
what, if any, other debian-derived distrobutions(DDD) have any relationship
with Debian in regards to developer communication, patch submission,
number of packages that are used directly from debian and which are DDD
maintained. Moreover, would it be helpful to have a document that lists
criteria for how closely DDDs work with Debian. There are many:
Kantonix, Knoppix, Gnoppix, Morphix, Ubuntu,... And user-folken may not
be aware of the relationships and may assume that all DDD are in total
collaboration with Debian.
Cheers,

ldapdns- DNS server that pulls data from an LDAP directory
Closes: 300574
Changes:
 ldapdns (2.06-3) unstable; urgency=high
 .
   * The upstream didn't fixed Bug#300574, so I've included the patch.
The fix is important because for some caching nameservers the ldapdns's
domains are non-existent if there is no MX record, and then they don't ask
about A record. Finally, you get no mail for these domains.
 Closes: #300574.

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Format: 1.7

Architecture: source all
Version: 2.6.0-2
Distribution: experimental
Urgency: low
Maintainer: Debian Java Maintainers [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Changed-By: Wolfgang Baer [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Description:
libxalan2-java - XSL Transformations (XSLT) processor in Java
libxalan2-java-doc - Documentation and examples for the Xalan-Java XSLT
processor
libxsltc-java - XSL Transformations (XSLT) compiler from Xalan-Java
Closes: 306633
Changes:
 libxalan2-java (2.6.0-2) experimental; urgency=low
 .
   * Build with kaffe / jikes / gjdoc
   * Move to main - together with libbsf-java (depending on each other)
(closes: #306633) as non-free JDKs are no longer needed
   * Adjusted build dependencies:
 + libant1.6-java to versioned dependency = 1.6.3-1
+ added libjaxp1.2-java (needed in bootclasspath for compilation)
jaxp1.2.jar is added to the ant.properties for correct bootclasspath
+ added kaffe (= 2:1.1.5-1) needed for build
   * Disabled the transformation of the manual until kaffe's cairo
Graphics2D backend will be activated - see README.Debian (added)
