Bug#332819: ITP: uruk -- Very small firewall script, for configuring iptables

2005-10-08 Thread Joost van Baal
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Joost van Baal [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I intend to upload the uruk Debian package.

* Package name: uruk
  Version : 2005071
  Upstream Author : Joost van Baal [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://mdcc.cx/uruk
* License : GPL
  Description : Very small firewall script, for configuring iptables

 Uruk is a wrapper for Linux iptables. A very simple shell script, but
 useful if you need similar (but not the same) packet filtering
 configurations on lots of boxes. It uses a template file, which gets
 sourced as a shell script, to get lists of source addresses, allowed to
 use specific network services. Listing these groups of allowed hosts
 and allowed services is all what's needed to configure your box.

 Main difference with other firewall setup tools: uruk is just a very
 small shell script, supports only iptables (yet), no gui, no interactive
 setup, no default configuration (yet). You'll like this if you'd rather
 not have lots of (probably buggy) code between you and your filtering
 rules.

The Debian package is available from

 deb[-src] http://mdcc.cx/debian local contrib

. I'll do some minor work on it before uploading.

I am using this script to manage iptables on quite some systems, for
more than 2 years now. I guess it's stable enough to get uploaded to
Debian now. I've done some comparison with other similar tools in
Debian; see http://mdcc.cx/uruk/ . Since uruk is _much_ smaller than
all other scripts, I guess there's a niche for this one too.

Bye,

Joost

Re: localhost.localdomain

2005-10-08 Thread Jeff Stevens

 The problem is probably that the localhost.localdomain stands before
 localhost in that line. So if you reverse resolve 127.0.0.1 you
 end up with localhost.localdomain which some applications don't understand.

Christopher hits the nail on the head. There are two separate issues:

1 - Is there a reason to have localhost.localdomain
2 - If there is localhost.localdomain should *not* precede localhost!

I'm not going to comment on the former but the latter is a *BIG* deal.
The current Debian /etc/hosts file is flat out wrong. When a call to
gethostbyname(3) or gethostbyaddr(3) and an IPV4 address of 127.0.0.1 is
supplied, it should return localhost. Provided resolv.conf is
configured to use files and then dns, gethostbyname/gethostbyaddr is
going to query /etc/hosts. In /etc/hosts multiple hostnames can be
assigned to a single address, but when resolving an address to a
hostname, the *first* hostname in the list is returned by
gethostbyname/gethostbyaddr.

Every sane implementation of IP returns localhost when querying
127.0.0.1. It doesn't matter if the implementation
uses /etc/hosts, /etc/inet/hosts, /boot/beos/etc/hosts, or (*gulp*) c:
\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.

Of course, other systems ship with a default hosts file containing
something in addition to localhost that resolves to 127.0.0.1. The
issue with Debian is that localhost.localdomain comes *before*
localhost. A call to gethostbyname() to resolve localhost returns a
struct referring to 127.0.0.1. A call to gethostbyname() to resolve
127.0.01 returns a struct referring to localhost.localdomain. This is
*wrong*.

This has been mentioned before, but I'll say it again. This is solely
because the Debian /etc/hosts reads:
127.0.0.1   localhost.localdomain localhost

localhost.localdomain and localhost must be swapped. The first
entry in the list of hosts *must* be localhost.

Just as a sanity check, Solaris ships with:
127.0.0.1   localhost loghost

FreeBSD ships with:
127.0.0.1   localhost localhost.my.domain myname.my.domain

I don't have access to AIX, HPUX or other major Unices, but I bet in the
hosts file, 127.0.0.1 is immediately followed by localhost -- and other
aliases follow localhost. localhost *must* be first.

-Jeff

Removing and replacing a binary package with a new source package?

2005-10-08 Thread Joe Wreschnig
I'm planning to remove ifp-line from the archive now that libifp (and
its ifp-line-equivalent) is mature and tested. Right now, the ifp-line
source package generates an ifp-line binary package, and the libifp
source package generates an ifp-line-libifp package (that Provides:
ifp-line).

What's the best way to do this to avoid confusing the archive scripts
and/or bothering ftp-masters? The easiest thing to do would be file an
RM bug for ifp-line and just have libifp generate an ifp-line package
(which Provides: ifp-line-libifp). Is this going to cause any problems?
Do I need to wait for ifp-line to be removed before uploading the new
libifp?

I don't have the stamina that you do, so I've only read random bits of
it a half-dozen times. The localhost.localdomain does seems to kind of
appear out of the blue half way through and looks very likely to have
been glommed in with the rest of the changes by mistake. It's hard to
tell looking back at the history.

Anyway, please bear in mind that it's very easy for me to go in and
change this line of code:

fprintf(fp, 127.0.0.1\tlocalhost.localdomain\tlocalhost\n);

To this:

fprintf(fp, 127.0.0.1\tlocalhost\n);

But it's then very hard to see if this breaks anything. After all, the
relevant change was made in netcfg in July of 2004. For an entire year,
it was in every system installed, and nobody complained, although a few
of us noticed it and thought it looked a bit strange. Debian released
and for months after the release nobody apparently saw fit to complain
or report any problems until this thread.

If I make any changes, I don't want to have them pop up and result in
another thread like this[1] in 1.5 years time when we're trying to release,
or have just released, etch. Also, I don't pretend to be any kind of
expert on the absurdly fragile and unintuitive behavior the system
exhibits with different flavours of localhost entry in the /etc/hosts
file. I'm just a guy who happens to know where the code is and how to
change if it I get a clear explanation of why it's broken and why a
given change is thuroughly correct.

So far, this thread has not yeilded anything I can trust to that degree.

Of course this change doesn't have to go through me. Joshua Kwan has
maintained netcfg in less busy times in his life. Thomas Hood comes as
close as any developer does to owning Debian's local resolver setup.
Pulling them into a discussion about this would be a very productive
thing to do. They'd probably be a lot more willing to look at the issues
in depth and quickly make an appropriate change.

Oh yeah, I should point out that I've been seeing various programs in
Debian not properly work with various /etc/hosts settings for at least
ten years. I belive that the typical thing a sysadmin does when their
current /etc/hosts setting breaks some program is to change it to
somerthing else, wait for the next thing to break, and ignore the
problem otherwise. So I don't think this is necessarily really a new
problem, and I don't know that there is actually a fix that fixes all
the problems, and I understand why we don't seem to get any feedback
evne if it's broken. :-/

Bug#332861: ITP: ezm3 -- An Easier Modula-3 Distribution

2005-10-08 Thread Piotr Roszatycki
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Piotr Roszatycki [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: ezm3
  Version : 1.2
* URL : http://www.polstra.com/projects/freeware/ezm3/
* License : Digital License Agreement (should be DFSG)
  Description : An Easier Modula-3 Distribution

Ezm3 is a simpler, more portable distribution of the Modula-3 compiler and
runtime libraries. Ezm3 is derived from the robust and comprehensive PM3
release of Modula-3. Only the components and features which are needed by CVSup
were retained.

The supported CPU for Linux is i386 only but there are unofficial patches
for hppa, sparc and powerpc support (http://dev.gentoo.org/~vapier/ezm3/).

The packaging is very tricky because it is not possible to separate the build
from the installation, and the installed files will not work if they are moved
to a different location. The only way is to use fakechroot and build the
packages in fake chroot environment.

lintian: postinst-does-not-load-confmodule

2005-10-08 Thread Nicolas Boullis
Hi,

I was about to upload a new release of one of my packages, but lintian
complains that postinst-does-not-load-confmodule. Running lintian with
-i, I can get more information:

N: Even if your postinst does not involve debconf, you currently need to
N: make sure it loads one of the debconf libraries. This will be changed
N:   in the future.

I can't understand why I should load anything related to debconf, if I
don't use debconf in postinst. (I use debconf in preinst and config,
where I load it with . /usr/share/debconf/confmodule.)

What am I missing?

Cheers,

Nicolas

 I notice that the newest upload of pstoedit has reverted the C++
 transition name change; instead of libpstoedit0c2 sid now contains
 libpstoedit0, as in sarge.

 Does this not need transitioning for the ABI change?

 It does need transitioning.

Having discovered that the lack of transitioning actually does lead to
real breakage, I have now filed a bug, #332859.

See debconf-devel(7):
   - incluez toujours /usr/share/debconf/confmodule au début de votre
  postinst, même si vous ne lancez aucune des commandes db_*.
  C’est nécessaire pour s’assurer que le script config sera bien
  lancé (voyez la section BIDOUILLES pour plus de détails) ;

Or, for English readers:
   * Always source /usr/share/debconf/confmodule at the top of your
  postinst, even if you won't be running any db_* commands in it.
  This is required to make sure the config script gets a chance to
  run (see HACKS for details).

Re: Bug#332858: ITP: cvsup -- The CVS-Optimized General-Purpose Network File Distribution System

2005-10-08 Thread Henning Makholm
Scripsit Piotr Roszatycki [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 The CVSup package was orphaned some time ago. See
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=129583

And then promptly adopted by Torsten Landschoff. It was removed
later (#210708) due to non-availability of a suitable Modula-3
implementation.

(I'm posting this referece to the ITP bug in the hope of helping
others; it took me some time to find the removal bug number).

 The CVSup requires Modula-3 compilator to build, so also I'm
 planning to package Ezm3 - An Easier Modula-3 Distribution, which is
 designated to compile CVSup only.

Best of luck with that. Torsten might still be interested, too.

 What breaks? What standards (with reference please) are not honored?

Well, even if Jeff didn't provide anything helpful in this regard, the
thread does show at least two specific packages that break when using
localhost.localdomain as the canonical name for 127.0.0.1: mysql, and inn.
Yes, it is appropriate to fix both of these applications to be more robust;

 What alternative solutions do you propose for the problems that led up to

   * Add 054-open_basedir_slash.patch, which fixes a bug where if open_basedir
 is set to /foo/, users can access files in /foobar/, which is not the
 documented behaviour; this addresses CAN-2005-3054 (closes: #323585)
   * Add 055-gd_safe_mode_checks.patch from PHP CVS, adding missing safe_mode
 checks to the _php_image_output and _php_image_output_ctx GD functions.

Changed-By: Martin Pitt [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Description:
 libpq3 - PostgreSQL C client library
 postgresql-7.4 - object-relational SQL database, version 7.4 server
 postgresql-client-7.4 - front-end programs for PostgreSQL 7.4
 postgresql-contrib-7.4 - additional facilities for PostgreSQL

 postgresql-pltcl-7.4 - PL/TCL procedural language for PostgreSQL 7.4
 postgresql-server-dev-7.4 - development files for PostgreSQL 7.4 server-side
programming
Closes: 320049 329197
Changes:
 postgresql-7.4 (1:7.4.9-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream bugfix release.
   * Adapted patches for new release:
 - 03_check_rlimit_nofile.patch
 - 12_gettext_domains.patch
   * Removed patches which are upstream now:
 - 15_timezone_inttimestamps.patch
   * Fix installation of gettext MO files to actually ship them.
   * debian/postgresql-7.4.postrm: Do not remove an empty /var/log/postgresql,
 postgresql-common now cares for it to not break log rotation. (See
 #325330)
   * Add debian/patches/11_relax_sslkey_permscheck.patch:
 - Relax security check on private SSL key file: The file is also
   considered safe if it has owner and/or group root, and if it is
   group-readable (unless the group is something other than root or the
   database owner group).
 - See bug #327901.
   * Build with gcc 3.3 on ia64, hppa, mips, mipsel, and sparc. Building with
 gcc 4.0 causes bus errors. Closes: #329197.
   * Add debian/patches/13_krb5_virtualserver.patch:
 - Fix Kerberos authentication when using virtual hosts. Thanks to
   [EMAIL PROTECTED] for the patch.
 - Closes: #320049
   * debian/rules: Fix typo that prevented execution of the test suite.
