Debian Installer team monthly meeting minutes (20060304 meeting)
(reply-to: debian-boot) Debian Installer team meeting number 10 has been held from 17:00UTC to 18:30UTC on Saturday March 4th 2006. There were about 80 people connected to the channel during the meeting and 13 of them spoke during the meeting at least once. The full log of the meeting is available at http://people.debian.org/~bubulle/d-i/irc-meeting-20060304/log Beta2 release summary - Because of CD build problems, the release has been delayed a bit. It is expected to happen during the next week, possibly before Saturday March 11th (post-meeting comment: that is *today*, folks..:-))). The whole team thanks Frans Pop for the great work managing this release as his first release with the release manager hat. Issues that will pop up during the last tests will have to be mentioned in the errata file. Next release: beta3 or RC1? --- Deciding about the name of the release is not trivial. Naming it beta3 means more new features allowed while RC1 would mean a begin of a freeze targeted at etch release. The discussion concludes that a beta3 release is possible. A very short schedule is needed as beta2 is very likely to be broken by the upcoming mirror reorganization, except for i386 and powerpc. Frans proposes to target a beta3 release for early April but indicates he might be unavailable for managing it. No candidate popped up to act as temporary release manager (post-meeting note: Joey Hess mentions he's OK to manage the release if Frans isn't available). This means that the post-beta2 changes should be focused on issues that are identified as important. The next 2-3 weeks are OK for (tested!) changes and development should again slow down after. Kernel .udeb and the way to handle out-of-tree and non-free modules --- We need some way to load non-free or third-party modules or firmware into d-i. The kernel team will probably drop several modules from the main tree, which is likely to drop support for several hardware (tg3, ql, etc). Such work would also be an occasion to offer entry points to load third party drivers, non-free firmware and all kinds of additionnal hardware-supprote related stuff inside d-i. Bastian Blank and Sven Luther summarize the needed changes in D-I: - anna: allow selection of the components - libdebian-installer: support reading of more than one packages file - ftp.debian.org: experimental udeb section (post-meeting comment by Joey Hess: which Leaves off the whole issue of modules needed before anna is available) Loading non-free firmware is mentioned to be only dropping the firmware files in /lib/firmware so that they're loaded by udev (post-meeting comment: we also need to install them in /lib/firmware on the installed system in base-installer, probably) The idea of non-free installation images pops up but, later, there were comments that it would make the maintenance of D-I builds more complicated, and it is enough complicated already. Another argument is: as soon as non free images will be available, people will always use them. Sven Luther proposes a mini plan: 1) we (Bastian?) will implement the needed anna/libd-i changes so more than one source is possible 2) The kernel team splits out non-free modules into a non-free packages, or eventually non-free firmware only 3) once both are done, come up with a test-case which shows how it works, and present it to the d-i team. 4) we do all this in time for beta3, and everyone is happy Frans (with Colin Watson's agreement) thinks that the schedule is pretty irrealistic, especially if to be done before beta3. A more detailed plan, posted on the debian-boot mailing list, is requested. Joey Hess later mentions that 2) should be done in experimental as doing it in unstable before everything is ready would be problematic. He mentions that 1) and 2) are OK to be worked on right now but we're getting closer of the time we'll need to stop sweeping changes because of freeze/release for Etch. As a conclusion, some discussion about the general directions to go has to happen in the debian-boot mailing list even though some early work on 1) could be done as long as it doesn't close options for the final implementation plan. An important issue is how to handle non-free packages in d-i: just treat them as regular packages for now (at least until Etch) or somehow make users load them separately. Work about persistent device naming scheme -- Devices changing their name between the installation step and the installed system step is a recurrent problem in D-I. Some work has been done in Ubuntu by Scott James Remnant (keybuk) for iftab parsing, but hasn't got deep agreement by Marco d'Itri (Md). Working closely with Marco is important so that D-I implements solutions which get full support by the udev package maintainer. Colin mentions a plan by Marco to make some bit of

Yes, I believe that the Ubuntu solution is suboptimal and harmful because it introduces a new configuration file instead of using the existing udev infrastructure (and so far nobody tried to persuade me that I am wrong, so I think we can consider this settled). I started writing a script to make udev create its own configuration rules for new interfaces but then was distracted by a different project which is much more fun and there has been no progress since then. Anyway, I do not expect any problems when I will get back to this and write the code. The workaround for the udev/kernel/initramfs-tools dependency loop on upgrades from sarge is in unstable now. Somebody will have to decide if the current user interface is good enough or contribute something better. Peter Samuelson wrote: [Peter Kourzanov] For most of the packages, what is so different in cross-compilation in comparison to native? Whether or not 'configure' believes it can use tests of the form try compiling and running this little program to see what it does. If it is cross-compiling, it is forced to skip such tests and use predetermined default answers. Yes, sure. But all of that is hidden behind the ./configure, why should Debian package management be concerned with these differences? And even then, why can't I run these little tests remotely with e.g., rsh? Assuming that I already have an initial working environment on the host... ;-) Note that this can produce nefarious little bugs, if the defaults aren't correct for your target architecture. Note also that not all configure scripts are given these default answers - if they aren't, you get a warning from autoconf about not supporting cross compilation, and I *believe* --host fails entirely. All true. There are also many packages which build _and run_ utilities as part of the build process. Three of my packages do this, though in two cases it's Debian-specific, so could be edited without much difficulty. Most packages do not distinguish between compiler-for-the-host-system and compiler-for-the-target-system (what the Linux kernel makefiles call HOSTCC and CC). So those will require significant hacking in upstream configure scripts and makefile to teach them to detect, and use, two separate compilers. This is a major problem for cross-compiling the whole distribution. And this is the problem I would like seeing solved. Also, debian/rules must make sure not to run any testsuites when cross- compiling. This is generally not hard, but it *is* an extra thing to have to fix. Yes. There are... 25411 Debian packages according to my 'apt-cache stats' and what I would like is to just issue a 'dpkg-buildpackage -aHOST ' on every single one of them and get a .deb file(s) that could be then immediately installed on a HOST machine. Of the six or so packages I'm involved with, three of them need more than just '--host'. (And two of the others are arch:all, so there's no need to cross-compile them anyway.) If that's representative, you're looking at a *lot* of work by a *lot* of people to realise your dream. Well, that or a *lot* of work by you, to write and submit patches for all these packages. Yes. As a consequence, maintainers had to remember to purge these conffiles by hand in the package postrm script. I just want to highlight the word these above in order to reduce the possibility of confusion. Postrms should not delete files that are currently conffiles of the package. dpkg takes care of deleting such files at the right time. If a file /etc/foo was formerly a conffile of the package but no longer is so then /etc/foo should be dealt with in the preinst or postinst. (Dealing with it has to take into account both the old and the new behavior of dpkg with respect to disappearing conffiles. I speak vaguely here because I haven't looked into the new behavior.) If it isn't dealt with there then it might be appropriate to delete it in the postrm, but not if there is reason to suspect that some other package is now using /etc/foo. How about this as a start? This should be safe in that it won't remove a conffile if another package (or itself) takes ownership of it. It also handles removal of the dpkg cruft, but I'm not sure that's always appropriate, since dpkg should handle it, at least for the new dpkg behaviour; this only caters for the old. Re: Implicition declarations of functions and bugs
David Mosberger-Tang [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Samuel, You're missing the point of the check-implicit-pointer-functions script. Its purposes is not to grep for warnings but instead to look for pairs of warnings that are *guaranteed* to cause crashes on 64-bit machines. gcc -Wall normally spits out tons of spurious warnings for 64-bit dirty code, but most of those warnings are just noise. The problem with gcc-4.0 warnings is that you can't distinguish between harmless implicit function declarations and ones that need to be flagged. Example: $ cat t.c char * foo (char *str) { return strdup (str); } enum e_t { a, b }; enum e_t bar (char *str) { return strlen (str); } $ gcc-3.3 -c -g -O -Wall t.c t.c: In function `foo': t.c:4: warning: implicit declaration of function `strdup' t.c:4: warning: return makes pointer from integer without a cast (all asm is from amd64) 00400500 foo: 400500: 48 83 ec 08 sub$0x8,%rsp 400504: 31 c0 xor%eax,%eax 400506: e8 d5 fe ff ff callq 4003e0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 40050b: 48 83 c4 08 add$0x8,%rsp 40050f: 48 98 cltq 400511: c3 retq The return value of strdup is passed back unaltered. This usualy goes unnoticed since strings usualy are longer than 2GB. But think about lseek() on files 2GB. This is just as dangerous. I actualy had to think hard to come up with an example of an implicit function declaration doing the wrong thing on amd64. For an implicit function declaration to fail the binary data passed to the function (or back) would have to differ in format. And the format is mostly just a register. Case one: Custom function returning a double // double myfabs(double x); double foo(double x) { return myfabs(x); } Without prototype: foo.c:2: warning: implicit declaration of function 'myfabs' foo: 0: 48 83 ec 08 sub$0x8,%rsp 4: b8 01 00 00 00 mov$0x1,%eax 9: e8 00 00 00 00 callq e foo+0xe e: f2 0f 2a c0 cvtsi2sd %eax,%xmm0 12: 48 83 c4 08 add$0x8,%rsp 16: c3 retq With prototype: foo: 0: e9 00 00 00 00 jmpq 5 foo+0x5 Case two: Overloading an implicit function // int fabs(double x); int foo(double x) { return fabs(x); } Without prototype: foo.c:3: warning: implicit declaration of function 'fabs' foo.c:3: warning: incompatible implicit declaration of built-in function 'fabs' foo: 0: 66 0f 54 05 00 00 00andpd 0(%rip),%xmm0# 8 foo+0x8 7: 00 8: f2 0f 2c c0 cvttsd2si %xmm0,%eax c: c3 retq With prototype: foo.c:1: warning: conflicting types for built-in function 'fabs' foo: 0: e9 00 00 00 00 jmpq 5 foo+0x5 In both cases the code does the wrong thing without prototype. In the first case the int register will be returned instead of the float register giving a random result. In the second case the overloaded function isn't even called. So the gcc-4.0 warning about built-in function actualy servers a very important function: It warns when gcc does not call the (potentialy) users function. I've seen enough code that define their own fabs, strnlen, MfG Goswin PS: Systems that pass arguments on the stack are far more vulnerable to implicit functions. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Buildd.Net Update - New Features and Archs
Hi! Since my last update on Buildd.Net [0] features here [1] many new features were added to Buildd.Net. I'll try to some them up: * a new design - the layout and structure of Buildd.Net changed. * devel systems - to support developers in their porting work, Buildd.Net donates accounts on some machines, e.g. m68k, mips or sparc. [2] * sarge-backports - after Norbert Tretkowski announced working on backports for Sarge, Buildd.Net is able to display information about sarge-backports again.[3] * version check - you can now check, what versions are installed for each arch. This is a feature of the ptracker script [4]. See [5] for details. * various package state checks - for example you can now check if a package is overdue after building [6] or which package is dep-waiting on what other package for how long [7]. There are some other checks as well on each arch page. You can reach them by clicking on the check link beside the corresponding graphs for Building, Uploaded, etc. You can find some description for those at [8], [9], [10] and [11] * Needs-Build queue ETA - this is a small feature that displays an estimation how long the needs-build queue would need to get compiled. This is based on the average build times gathered by the participating buildds. More details on [12] * kfreebsd-amd64 added - as already announced in DWN[13] and by Aurelien Jarno [14], Buildd.Net supports the new port by inclusiding it on its site [15] * mailing list - for discussing Buildd.Net related stuff, feature requests, etc. there is now a mailing list: bn-misc at lists.buildd.net - you can subscribe by sending a mail to bn-misc-request at lists.buildd.net with the subject subscribe And some special news as well: * Buildd.Net becomes OpenSource - as announced in [16] I began to make the sources for Buildd.Net publically available on [17]. Currently every time I'm changing or adding a new script to Buildd.Net I'll make it available on the above mentioned page. So, one script after the other will be become GPLed. * Access to Buildd.Nets Database - related to that, you can now request direct access to the database behind Buildd.Net [18]. Of course this is not an open database where you can just connect and play with. But if you want to use that database to write your own build graphs or such, you can request access to the database. Well, that or a *lot* of work by you, to write and submit patches for all these packages. Yes. But if I can convince maintainers then I suppose this can become *less* work for a *lot* of people:-) It is often not at all trivial to redo the build process to avoid having to build and run programs. The amount of work that the GCC maintainers put into this is significant. I'm afraid that for many other packages, people are going to question whether the amount of work required is really justified. You'd probably be best off picking a subset of packages that make sense to cross-compile and focusing on them rather than hoping for the entire distribution. The entire distribution includes things like the full Mozilla suite, and it would surprise me if cross-compiling such things was really on anyone's radar or will be. Re: cross-compiling Debian packages
You may look at dpkg-cross ... I did, and I'm using it, thanks:-) What is the deal BTW with that new rewrite_dependencies (as of 1.26) producing bogus names with -dcv1 suffix? I had to comment 2 lines out of dpkg-cross script to make it work for libgpm for instance... It's versioning logic. Older dpkg-cross used to have other default paths, so something should be done to avoid packages created by older dpkg-cross to satisfy dependences of packages created by newer dpkg-cross. Do you mean it works incorrectly in some cases? If so, I'm interested in details ... Also, would you welcome patches that add the ability to handle packages built with alternative libc implementations, namely uClibc, Dietlibc and Newlib? Your patches are welcome. I thought that best way to handle other libc's is introducing other 'architectures', like i386-uclibc. Then tools could just cross-compile for this 'architecture'. Re: conffile purging and maintainer scripts
Roger Leigh wrote: This updated version should cater for both the old and new behaviour. Any comments? Maintainers using this should be aware that it will mistakenly delete conffiles that have been converted to e.g., ucf configuration files. This is, of course, unavoidable. It will also delete any locally-installed configuration files, of course. The following sequence of actions could be quite bad: 1. Locally install FOO, with its config file /etc/foo.conf. Maybe because FOO isn't available in stable. 2. Someone packages FOO for Debian, with the config file /etc/foo.conf. 3. Debian package changes to using /etc/foo/foo.conf 4. Upgrade to stable+1, install Debian FOO package. Or install from backport, whatever. 5. Decide you'd rather keep locally installed FOO, purge Debian FOO package. Solution to this one is that admins should follow the FHS and put their config files in /etc/local/ :-D -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Ah, that explains it. On amd64 I believe the callee has to take care of keeping the top 32bit clean, i.e. return values are already extended to 64bit. Lucky us. Still, both original examples are harmfull and should be detected. A crash is much simpler to detect than lost upper bits so I would consider detecting the strlen case automaticaly much more important. I bet the crash will get detected by itself. By the way, does ia64 NOT map anything into the lower 4GiB address space like alpha does? In that case any pointer passed as int segfaults. On amd64 they didn't keep the lower 4GiB free. :( MfG Goswin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
supporting navigation mouse buttons in Debian
Hello, I was recently browsing the web on a windows box and realized that over the last 4 years, I had forgotten how nice it is to be able browse back/forward with a single button click. So I set about enabling this functionality on my Debian box. I found this gentoo doc (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Mouse_Nav_Buttons) very helpful. Now, my question is, would it be possible to work toward supporting nav buttons out of the box in Debian? I know that there are probably a lot of issues because there is no hardware standard for the nav buttons, but maybe there would be a way to store configuration for all the hardware. The gentoo doc is geared toward enabling back/forward nav in mozilla only, so there may need to be some thought put into a way to generalize this. Is anyone else interested in making nav buttons work out of the box, and would it be worthwhile to work on? This would likely involve (hopefully minor) changes to a lot of parts of the distribution. I think this capability is important because I remember when I first switched that I was disappointed that the nav buttons didn't work. I stuck with it, but it could be enough to turn away a significant number of new users who are stuck in the windows mud. One of the gnome HIG is along the lines of provide an interface that the user expects and don't suprise them. I look forward to any thoughts on this matter. Regards, Mike
