Re: CDBS and dh_install

2006-06-12 Thread Jean Parpaillon
Uhhh,
I did not want to launch such a big discussion :-)

Here is my opinion (this is my first packages for Debian, and people on
debian-mentors know it has not been easy to follow the whole policy ;-)

- I first used a simple rules script, because I can not imagine using
a wrapper while not knowing the system it is around.
- But now, I use CDBS because it is much simpler to follow the policies
with it, and to have good practices, ie using *.install, *.dirs, etc.
files.
- I can use CDBS because the upstream sources are standards. Moreover,
I'm upstream devel too and I can easily fix issues in upstream rather
than writing hacks in the Debian sources.

To conclude, I will use CDBS because :
- I know how to write a package without it
- and there are no hacks in the packaging.

  Yeah, I and others we disagree! :)

  CDBS makes maintenance of some packages damn easy: most changes are
  done in debian/* files, where they belong.

  Here's some piece of pure statistics, completely biased by the fact all
  sources come from the same project:
  - we have 84 GNOME desktop packages

  - 71 of these are CDBS
  - they have an average debian/rules length of 18 lines (empty lines
included, 13 lines if you exclude empty lines)

  Of course, the shortest code is not necessarily the easiest to read,
  but I don't consider these lines to be obfuscated either. They might
  be CDBS specific though, and require some CDBS understanding to parse.

  My feeling is that CDBS works best with upstream tarballs following a
  standard layout. CDBS pushes us into storing meta-information about
  the Debian packaging in separate files (debian/*.install,
  debian/*.examples, debian/*.docs). (Yes, this is an indirect
  consequence of debhelper being well thought.)

  The debian/rules ends up storing the _delta_ between what a normal
  package would do and what is needed for this particular package.

  But I understand CDBS can be slightly dangerous in subtle cases, and
  difficult to grasp the first time you encounter CDBSized packages.
  It's an useful evil.

Re: GBit performance problem with nfs client

2006-06-12 Thread Gordon Grubert

The most interesting fact is, that I obtain about 10MB/s with
my Debian client if I connect the file server to a 100MBit Port
on the switch.

You might also want to try another GB switch to see if that has the same
problem. NFS seems to do quite funny things (perhaps some speed hacks
including partial packages) that seem to confuse some modern switches.

I connected the server and the Debian client to an older
3Com-GBit-switch whereby the speed of the client was set
to 100MBit and the server had 1GBit. Now, I reached a transfer rate
of about 10MB/s.

Today I will try to use a 100MBit-NIC with the original switch
and let's see what will happen.

Thanks a lot.
Gordon

Not in that length. The template question used by most AMs is:

  Write a small shell script which does the following two things:
 a. prints whether a Debian package archive file has a copyright file
in the appropriate location.
 b. prints out the package version from the control file which is

On 6/12/06, Jari Aalto [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I don't think this concerns debian-policy at all. The use of
alternatives is something that needs to be coordinated amont the
maintainers of packages. It's not a question of policy or of dpkg.

So, in order to have an alternative link for x-word-processor or
x-spreadsheet, you need to file wishlist bugs against the packages
that would be involved, and then have the maintainers agree with each
other what to do.

But, before doing so, it would be a good idea to discuss about this on
debian-devel. I suggest you post the original proposal to
debian-devel, explaining the full rationale on why you want this, what
would need to be changed, what would be the benefits for the users and
what would be the maintainers' resposibilities.

 This is very annoying when doing a test build, since it's not a valid
 changelog format and so you have to fake up some release date (and
 remember to undo it afterwards).

Right. As I wrote below, pity this breaks dpkg-parsechangelog, since
OTOH it's the format thant makes more sense to me, dunno about others.

*Evil ponder*

I wonder if the dpkg maintainers would accept the patch included below,
with dch being updated accordingly afterwards. May seem like a kludge at
first sight, but if you think about it, the 'debian' changelog format
lacks official syntax to specify this is work in progress.

  Pity that dpkg-parsechangelog would choke on that, and also, I haven't
  heard anybody express discontent about this, so maybe I'm too picky,
  which makes me think that everybody is happy with using dist=UNRELEASED
  and updating the timestamp with each commit (or not doing, and risk
  forgetting to do so the last time before uploading).

 It would be fairly easy to make dch only update the date when doing a
 dch -r.

Mmm? To be consistent with my quoted paragraph, this should read It
would be fairly easy to make `dch` not update the date [nor the name] if
dist=UNRELEASED [and only do so with `dch -r`]. Which may not be a
change you'd be willing to make, but just pointing out what it'd take to
solve this from within dch, that's all.

/usr/share and -common pkgs

2006-06-12 Thread Justin Pryzby
-common packages are used to reduce the size of the archive; arch
independant data need not be included in each of the 10+ arch-specific
binary packages; only one package is needed.

As expected, most of the contents of the -common packages are in
/usr/share:

  time zgrep -Ff (apt-cache search -n -- -common |sed -ne 's/[^a-z0-9.+-].*//;
s/^/\//; /-common/p') /home/pryzbyj/conflict/Contents-i386.gz |grep -Eo
'^(usr/)?[^/]*' |uniq -c |sort -nr
  46366 usr/share
   3319 usr/lib

298 var
165 usr/bin
133 usr/include
 83 usr/sbin
  6 sbin
  3 usr/games
  3 usr/X11R6

The LFS intent of separating /usr/share and /usr/lib is to allow a
filesever to export /usr/share to machines of *any* architecture
running the same OS (/usr is supposed to be sharable to machines of
the *same* arch). But this is considerably complicated by the fact
that many packages *depend* on their -common data (90), or the other
way around (20); some both (12) [out of 271]:

  apt-cache search -n -- -common |sed -ne 's/[^a-z0-9.+-].*//; h;G; s/\n/ /;
s/-common//p;' |while read p q; do r=`apt-cache show $q 2/dev/null ||
continue`; grep -q ^Depends:.* $p[ (,] $r || continue; echo $p; done

Twiddle the p's and q's and second || to to taste.

Years ago I asked Zed Pobre about this, and he said that the arch and
indep packages should recommend each other; in the typical case, they
should both be installed; in the fileserver case, only arch is
installed on the clients; only indep on the server.

Is this recommendation widely accepted, or just for cases where
likeliness of using a fileserver is relatively high? Should policy
make a recommendation^W^W^W^Wbugs be filed? If not, what is the
suggested way to run such a fileserver setup for these packages?
equivs?

Re: Non-DD's in debian-legal

2006-06-12 Thread Jeremy Hankins
Ian Jackson [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
 Jeremy Hankins writes (Non-DD's in debian-legal):

 I'm not sure I understand this part, though. Do you think that folks
 like myself, who are not DD's, should not participate in the discussions
 on d-l?

 Actually, I think they should not participate, in general.

I've given this a fair amount of thought. You make some good points,
and some of them strike quite close to home for myself, so I clearly
have to give them some weight. But I don't think you've got the whole
picture here.

 The arguments that are had on debian-legal about what is an acceptable
 licence, and what principles these decisions should be based on, are
 often very political. Political decisions in Debian should be taken
 by DD's.

This is the point that bothers me the most. It's certainly true that
licensing decisions are in part political. But it's also the case that
they are in part technical. Not in the sense of having to do with
technology and computers, but in the sense of hinging upon particular
details and specialized knowledge. It is quite possible to get a
licensing issue empirically wrong, after all.

This came up with the recent GR on the GFDL. There was a bit of
discussion on d-l about how to interpret it: was it amending the DFSG,
or specifying an interpretation for the GFDL? If it was the first,
exactly what was the amendment, and why didn't it say it was amending
anything? If it was the latter wasn't it a bit like legislating pi or
outlawing the tides: an attempt to fix by legislative fiat something
which we have no control over in the first place. In the end I think
this was (sort of) resolved by interpreting the GFDL GR as specifying an
interpretation, but only for the purposes of the DFSG. (Of course, as a
political issue being discussed on d-l, this proves your point.)

I'm not trying to re-raise the whole GFDL debate. But I do think it was
an example of where Debian could go wrong by treating licensing issues
as political issues. In the end, there's a real world out there with
real judges and real courts, and we can't act as if they don't exist.

It's certainly true that licensing issues are intensely political. And
it's probably impossible to disentangle the politics from the technical
(factual) issues. And Debian, as an organization, has a right to say
that internal politics are internal, and not something for outsiders
like myself to be party to. If that's the case, though, political lists
should really be taken private, or posting limited to members, or
whatever.

Personally, I think that one of Debian's strengths is its openness, and
willingness to have discussions in front of and with outsiders. Though
naturally, I say that as an outsider.

 Arguments about licences are phrased as if the questions are all
 clear-cut and right-or-wrong, but actually usually they're matters of
 interpretation where weight of numbers on one side or another ends up
 often carrying the day. (`Am I really the only person who thinks this
 is completely mad?' `No, but all the rest of them are too busy writing
 software.')

If they're busy writing software they're probably not up to speed on the
technical/factual issues. So it's a fair question to ask whether their
opinion is relevant. In the end that's a variation of the lurkers
support me.

This is one of the most common accusations leveled against d-l: that the
membership of d-l is skewed and not representative of Debian as a whole.
If that's true there's not much d-l can do about it, of course, and the
whole process of license evaluation should perhaps be rethought. The
simplest solution, though, is for those who think d-l skewed to start
participating.

 The situation with non-DD's pontificating about what is and is not an
 acceptable Free licence is mitigated somewhat by the fact that
 debian-legal is only a talking shop and doesn't actually decide, but
 as we've just seen, people (both people from debian-legal and
 elsewhere) do seem to think that debian-legal is or ought to be where
 these decisions are taken.

I think what's concerning to most (it concerns me) is that people seem
to be _avoiding_ d-l, presumably because they see it as invalid or
corrupted by weirdos. That's indicative of a serious problem, because
it means licensing issues aren't being discussed _at all_. As saddened
as I would be if d-l went private, if doing so is the only way to solve
that problem it's probably a good idea.

 Discussions about licensing are different from most other kinds of
 activity in Debian precisely because they're political and have a very
 low barrier to entry. Picking up the slack in licence approval (if
 indeed there is any slack) is not at all like picking up the slack in
 maintenance of a particular package. To maintain a package you need a
 clear technical head, a certain minimum time commitment, and the
 results (good or bad) are clearly visible. Whereas anyone can blow
 off hot air on a mailing list.

 that many packages *depend* on their -common data (90), or the other
 way around (20); some both (12) [out of 271]:

Depends both way is a policy violation because it makes the package
(theoretically) uninstallable. It also leats to install/remove

If not, what is the
 suggested way to run such a fileserver setup for these packages?
 equivs?

If package A needs something from package B to run then you need a
depends. If package B is just some optional themes or icons then a
recommends/suggests will suffice. In that case B should probably also
say Enhances: A. A recommends will not (mostly not) cause B to get
installed at all. It is only a recommendation while depends reflects a
requirement.

I guess you could write a script that generates pseudo packages for
all -common packages that check that it is installed on the server in
preinst or some other safety measure and use them instead for a shared
/usr/share setup. That won't help with packages that mix /usr/share
and other files though. A lot of packages do mix /usr/share and other
stuff even if you exclude /usr/share/doc. I fear that you need to
patch dpkg or dpkg-deb to support this.

 that problem it's probably a good idea.

The d-l list has a problem which is shared by many Debian mailing
lists (including debian-vote and debian-devel, and I'm sure it's not
limited to them) which is that far too many people subscribe to the
last post wins school of debate. People don't listen, they just
assert their point of view --- back and forth, back and forth. Foo!
Bar!  Foo!  Bar!

In addition, far too many people treat mailing lists like irc
discussions, where one-line witty reparte's provide entertainment
(perhaps) but do not necessarily further bringing an issue to closure.

As a result, I have deliberately avoided d-l, because I have better
things to do with my time. If you want to reform d-l, it's not enough
to ask people to just participate. It's going to be necessary to
enforce some cultural changes to how participants on Debian mailing
lists behave. They need to be respectful of the other participant's
time, and not just use the excuse of free speach to any kind of
anti-social and self-centered behaviour.

Unfortunately, the only thing I can think of that might be useful
would be active moderation of the list, combined with summary of the
opinions (with both majority and minority opinions) that is summarized
by the moderator, and which when it is due, can be archived on some
web site or wiki. Yes, that means that d-l won't be the home to
free-spirited, free-ranging debate; instead, there might be structured
discussion that actually leads to light being shed and work being
accomplished in an efficient manner. But it does mean that a
moderator has to be found that can declare certain discussions as
ratholes, and be capable of fairly summarizing the positions being
espoused by various camps on the list, and holding straw polls that
are based on participants on the lists, and not by number of postings
on the list (which unfortunately leads to the last post wins abuse
and style of discourse that we see on all too many mailing lists).

If everyone participating on the list were mature and grown-up, this
wouldn't be necessary. And I would suspect that the call to restrict
d-l to only DD's is a hope to exclude some of the more immature and
less disciplined posters. But, as we all know, being a DD does not
guarantee social maturity, so I don't believe that is necessarily the
best way to do things.

However, I *do* believe that d-l is a cesspit, and I for one am very
glad that in its current incarnation, it is not at all binding and has
no value other than being a debating socity --- a debating socity that
I am very glad that I can avoid, thank you very much.

A clean way to introduce delay between scripts in /etc/init.d?

2006-06-12 Thread LEE, Yui-wah (Clement)
Hi,

What is a clean way to introduce a delay between the
scripts in /etc/init.d ?

I saw a problem that /etc/rc2.d/S27bind9 started before
/etc/rc2.d/S25ifplugd actually completed all the tasks
...

Specifically, ifplugd, with the help of resolvconf,
would generate the file /var/run/bind/named.options,
which would be used by bind9. Unfortunately by the
time bind9 ran, the file was not yet generated.

I could force a delay between the two scripts by
introducing another script (run at S26) that does
nothing but sleep for a fixed time (30 seconds). That
seemed to work around the problem. But I wonder if
there is a cleaner solution.

Ideally, the delay should not be fixed but dynamic.
That is, a later script can have some means to know for
sure that an earlier script has completed all the tasks
already.

Thanks!

Clement

does not return until all tasks are complete.

pcmcia-cs used to have similar problems, which were fixed by making
cardmgr run with the -f switch. ifplugd has a -w switch that is supposed
to do the same thing according to at least some of the documentation, and
is enabled by default. Maybe it's not working though, or doesn't
actually wait until the interface is up, but just until the initial link
beat detection is done?

In S25ifplugd create a file S25ifplugd.pid right at the start and
remove that at the end (and as trap on exit in case of error).

Add a statement to S27bind9 that checks for s25ifplugd.pid and if
present sleeps a seconds and retries.

I think you need to restart/reload BIND after modifying named.options.

A much cleaner and faster way: run the scripts from /etc/resolvconf/update.d
at that stage. This may create files with no DNS entries but at least the
files are there. And in the case of bind, it will be told to reload its
configuration when new DNS entries appear.
And actually, it is done when /etc/init.d/resolvconf is run at boot time. If
the file creation fails and the script /etc/resolvconf/update.d/bind does not
create the needed file, I would consider this a bug somewhere along that
line.

Re: A clean way to introduce delay between scripts in /etc/init.d?

2006-06-12 Thread Stephen Samuel
One thing you can do is check every few seconds to see if the script has
completed.
You could, for example, have bind9 remove a blocking file when it is
starting, and recreate it when it is done (or vice versa). Have your
later script check for the existence of the file when it starts.

It's also a good thing to put a timeout into the loop, so that you don't
block permanently.

I have a script snippet that does something similar. It checks to see if
pump has assigned an IP address in the wanted subnet, and then uses that
address if it is assigned (or times out after 8 attempts).

In this case, you can use the value of $emsg to decide what to do after
this loop (I just print it).
The question for success here is whether the read gets enough words to
fill 'num' with the

last octet of the IP address from 'ifconfig -a'

Re: Move to python 2.4 / Changing the packaging style for python packages

2006-06-12 Thread Ben Burton

Hi,

 With the upcoming releases of the last packages which
 didn't support 2.4 yet (Plone on the Zope application server) we may
 be able to drop support for 2.3 in sid and etch as well.

For reference, decompyle still needs python2.3. There are two issues:

1. It won't build under python2.4.  I have fixes for this that I haven't
   uploaded (and that need some more testing and tidying up).

2. It won't decompile python2.4 bytecode. This will be somewhat harder
   to fix (and I haven't done it yet).

Issue #2 is not really relevant to dropping python2.3, since keeping
python2.3 around is not going to help the fact that people will be
wanting to decompile bytecode for the new default python2.4.

Issue #1 is a problem however, so if there are plans to drop 2.3 for
etch, I'd be very happy for a rough timeframe so I know when this all
needs to be dealt with.

Hi,

  1. It won't build under python2.4.  I have fixes for this that I haven't
 uploaded (and that need some more testing and tidying up).

 You may still ask for help.

This will be easy enough to have ready by the time 2.3 is removed, which
I'm assuming is not happening tomorrow. Where I'd love the help is with
the python2.4 decompilation (see below).

  2. It won't decompile python2.4 bytecode. This will be somewhat harder
 to fix (and I haven't done it yet).

 If it is not able to decompile recent python version, then it is a kind
 of useless one.

Well, it's certainly useful at the moment since python2.3 is the default,
and I claim it's still useful even after python2.3 is dropped -- just
because debian changes the default python doesn't mean all your old bytecode
disappears. One of the more important uses of this software is for
repairing things in an emergency (e.g., rm *.py, oops), which is why I
want to keep it around.

 Python 2.4 is out since a while, what are upstream plans for their software ?

Upstream went commercial back in the 2.2 days. The debian packages
forked and essentially became the de-facto upstream source when 2.3
decompilation was introduced, and it's still that way now.

AFAIR, a package

 Package: python-foo

 Depends: python (= 2.3), python ( 2.5), python-bar, python2.3-bar,
python2.4-bar

should not have to depend on python2.3 and python2.4; instead, applications

If they call /usr/bin/python as the interpreter, yes, they should depend on
python of some version. If they call /usr/bin/python2.x as the interpreter
(which is discouraged), then they must depend on the corresponding python2.x
package.

This isn't new as far as python policy goes, it's just poorly adhered to by
the packages currently in the archive.

   * Build on i386 (closes: #254059); add isinstallable file to restrict use
 of elilo to Apple i386 systems, which are the only EFI-using systems I
 know of at the moment.
   * Drop installer-menu-item number to 76 in order to be later than
 grub-installer and lilo-installer, to reduce the risk of breakage on
 i386.

 output of parted (thanks, Bryan Stillwell; closes: #368660).

Description:
 libxine-dev - the xine video player library, development packages
 libxine1 - the xine video/media player library, binary files
Closes: 281572 300852 320164 336437 354436 358429 368247 369658 369876 369974
Changes:
 xine-lib (1.1.1-2) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   [ Reinhard Tartler ]
 .
   * Use external libmad, acknowledging NMU (Closes: #336437)
   * enable support for libxvmc1, now that we have xorg in debian
 (Closes: #281572)
   * Conflict/Replaces obsolete package 'xine' (Closes: #300852)
   * Incorporated Darrens Changes into a new maintainer upload
   * medium urgency, although security fixes a lot of other functionality
 changes
   * Some more fixages to inline usage in internal copy of ffmpeg, continuing
 the patch from Darren Salt.
   * Verified that this upload fixes build on mips, and other build failiures
 look pretty similar. Therefore (Closes: #354436)
   * Verified that /usr/share/doc/libxine1/faq/faq.{html,txt} is now installed
 correctly (Closes: #369658)
   * fix gnome-vfs plugin to allow play back of http URLs again. Patch from
 upstream CVS, thank you for pointing this out, Sam Morris (Closes: #369974)
 .
   [ Darren Salt ]
 .
* SECURITY FIXES (closes: #369876):
 - Possible buffer overflow in the AVI demuxer, caused by
   specially-crafted files or streams;
 - Possible buffer overflow in the HTTP header-fetching code.
   (CVE-2006-2802)
 .
   * Tidy up the FAQ list and README installation to quieten dh_install.
   * Re-update the FSF address in debian/copyright. It got lost in 1.1.1-1.
   * Add build-dep alternatives for those of us who do backports to sarge.
   * Tidy up the package descriptions a little.
   * Bump shlibs to = 1.1.0 due to new functions. (Closes: #358429, #368247)
   * Empty config file no longer prevents the config from being saved.
 (Fixed in upstream 1.1.1) (Closes: #320164)
   * Pulled in some patches from CVS:
 - the above security fixes;
 - fix ALSA resume-from-suspend;
 - fix incorrect size calculation in interlaced Matroska demuxing;
 - various uninitialised variables, some of which should be non-zero;
 - HTTP MRLs requiring authentication would only work when using a proxy;
 - fix possibly-broken locale handling in the SMB input plugin;
 - avoid problems where the ffmpeg audio decoder can't find a codec;
 - avoid a couple of compiler warnings (libavutil);
 - fix up some typecasting in the win32 codec interface;
 - avoid problems with negative sizes (general demuxing);
 - some plugin cache reading code should also be used on ia64;
 - fix a couple of printf warnings on 64-bit;
 - add some locking around playback speed change code;
 - incorrect default CPU acceleration setting on powerpc;
 - fix crash at startup if VO deinterlacing is enabled, onefield_xv is
   selected and the image format is YV12;
 - avoid possible segfault with 1x1 PNGs when handled by the ffmpeg plugin;
 - wrong names used for libX11 and libXv in the health check code (we now
   detect the correct names at build time);
 - add a missing -I to src/libffmpeg/libavcodec/sparc/Makefile.am (should
   fix an FTBFS on sparc);
 - alter configure.ac to avoid FTBFS when configure is regenerated with
   autoconf 2.59c or later.
   * Add AM_MAINTAINER_MODE.
   * Fix usage of inlined functions in libffmpeg before they're defined. This is
 not implemented for all architectures in gcc 4.0.x and was causing FTBFS.
   * Kill some pointer-int casting warnings on 64-bit architectures. (Taken
 from CVS HEAD)
