Re: Bug#434465: ITP: vbrfix -- tool to correct MP3 files with incorrect Variable BitRate information

Hi,

Description : tool to correct MP3 files that have broken Variable BitRate
information

For the record, I have had very good results with mp3packer :
http://omion.dyndns.org/mp3packer/mp3packer.html

A VBR null frame is placed at the beginning of the file to tell the MP3
player information about the song length and indexing through the
song.

Is that what is called the VBR header or sometimes the Xing header?

Alex

I don't see an obvious place for this one either. Window Managers/Tools

though, which I think was intentionally avoided.

Yes. The intention was to have a balanced menu.

I do see the need for some sort of general category for that kind of
thing. Applications/Tools is way too general-sounding, though, and I
 agree with removing that.

What about System/Administration? It fits there because a) it changes
the way your desktop environment behaves, and b) you would usually only
start it once per session.

A separate section may not make much sense, because the number of
similar applications is quite low, and most user would only have a
couple of them installed.

Actually we have a section for FVWM and another for Window Maker, but
nothing for the others WMs. Why?

Maybe those two actually have a pile of modules for which it makes sense
to create menu items? The idea of those menu sections as I understand it
is that they're hidden for all other window managers.

Yes. These modules do not work in incompatible WM's, so they are hidden
to avoid confusion. Other WM's either do not use modules, or manage them
internally, so they do not need such sections.

As far as I see it, this is not the case for fbpanel, as it does not
depend on specific WM.

open bugs against removed packages still in stable

2007-07-24 Thread Neil Williams
When a package is removed (gchangepass, printtool), the removal
message asks for the open bugs to be closed or re-assigned. These two
packages still exist in stable and/or oldstable. It isn't appropriate
to reassign any of these bugs, the question is should the bugs still be
closed due to the removal from unstable even though the bugs are likely
to apply to versions in stable and/or oldstable?

printtool has 6 bugs, gchangepass 1. Left open, are these to remain
open until Lenny makes it into oldstable?

fails:

Bug#434518: ITP: libsnmp-info-perl -- OO interface to network devices and MIBs through SNMP

Upstream Author : Eric A. Miller [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://snmp-info.sourceforge.net/
* License : Perl/Artistic
  Programming Lang: Perl
Description : OO interface to network devices and MIBs through SNMP

SNMP::Info gives an object oriented interface to information obtained through
SNMP. This module is geared towards network devices; subclasses exist for a
number of network devices and common MIBs.

The idea is to give a common interface to data from network devices, leaving
the device-specific hacks behind the scenes in subclasses. The information may
be coming from any number of MIB files and is often vendor specific. SNMP::Info
provides a common API for all supported devices. Adding support for your own
device is easy, and takes little SNMP knowledge. The module is not limited to
network devices. Any MIB or device can be given an objected oriented front-end
by making a module that consists of a couple hashes.

This module was originally written in support of the NetDisco project.

Way too much work, and better support for xinetd is not something
 important enough to justify it.

Perhaps not, but the possibility to just drop a configuration snippet in
a .d directory, instead of having to mess with a single configuration file,
is appealing IMHO. Russ: May I ask why you don't like xinetd?

xinetd, and update-inetd can use the information, which is a superset
(right?) of that used by other inetd's, to update the old-school
  inetd.conf.

A simpler fix is to create an update-inetd program which will update the
xinetd configuration. This does not require to modify any other package
(except optionally the original update-inetd program to handle the
 transition between the two packages).

Apparently not simple enough for it to be implemented already...

Anyway, you have proposed that all superserver packages provide their own
update-inetd implementation, which is fine and simple enough, except that
it's not clear how the configuration would be transferred when one
superserver is replaced by another. There needs to be some common data
format, whether a file format or an in-memory data structure. One drawback of
introducing a common *registry*, whether that be /etc/xinetd.d or something
Debian-specific, is the problem of synchronizing changes between the registry
and the respective configuration files. Because of that, it might be better
only to use the common format temporarily when switching from one superserver
package to another.

Hmm, now when I look at rlinetd, I see that it uses a configuration format
similar to, but not at all compatible with, that of xinetd. It
diverts /usr/sbin/update-inetd and provides its own version, which calls the
original one after doing its work. Thus switching from rlinetd to one of the
superservers using the traditional configuration format works at a basic
level, but any customisation of the rlinetd config is not preserved. I guess
xinetd could do the same, using the existing itox program to do the
conversion. After all, services can only expect the least common subset of
options to work, and superservers have many different features, which not all
are translatable.

xsltproc complaining with error code 5 and a message, that shows, that
there is a duplication inside the stylesheetdoesn't point to an
incompatible source. It points to a broken stylesheet, which is indeed
the issue. The problem has been fixed in the Debian package in version

@Paul: Because the stylesheets cannot be fixed online, download them

package from snapshot.debian.net. In the first case, you need to adjust
the import path of xsl/docbook.xsl to point to the local copy of
db2latex. In the latter case, no further actions needs to be taken,
because the package installs a catalog file, that automatically rewrites
the online location to the local installation location.

This isn't horrible, but I don't think it's a particularly great
solution. I think of System/Administration as tools that configure the
system or perform administrative actions, not utilities for the desktop.

A separate section may not make much sense, because the number of
similar applications is quite low, and most user would only have a
 couple of them installed.

I think there are a fair number. While a lot of them can find room
elsewhere (such as Games/Toys for things like xeyes), there are other
pseudo-window-manager utilities that have been around for a long time.
unclutter comes to mind. Or the millions of desktop clocks, for which I
also don't see a great category.

I wonder if Applications/Desktop would make sense, for desktop utilities,
which seems to be the term most used for this kind of thing.

A bad taste left over from Red Hat, mostly. Although one thing that the
current system allows without too much trouble is disabling entries, and
adding the xinetd disable option is a fair bit harder than just
commenting it out (when scripting the modification, for example, to apply
to tons of systems).

The configuration model of separate files per service is definitely
better. I'm not sure if I care about all of the other complexity of
xinetd, though. I only run inetd for the Kerberos r* protocol daemons
anyway, so nearly all my systems have a very simple inetd.conf file with
three lines in it.

Bug#434532: ITP: netdisco -- Web-based network management tool

2007-07-24 Thread Oliver Gorwits
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Oliver Gorwits [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: netdisco
  Version : 0.95
Upstream Author : Eric Miller, Bill Fenner and Max Baker [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://www.netdisco.org/
* License : Perl/Artistic
  Programming Lang: Perl
Description : Web-based network management tool

NetDisco is designed for moderate to large networks, configuration information
and connection data for network devices are retrieved and set by SNMP. With
Netdisco you can locate the switch port of an end-user system by IP or MAC
address. Data is stored using a SQL database for scalability and speed.

Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP), Foundry Discovery Protocol (FDP), Link Layer
Discovery Protocol (LLDP), and SynOptics Network Management Protocol (SONMP)
optionally provide automatic discovery of the network topology.

The network is inventoried by both device model and operating system (such as
IOS). Netdisco uses router ARP tables and L2 switch MAC forwarding tables to
locate nodes on physical ports and track them by their IP addresses.

For each node, a time stamped history of the ports it has visited and the IP
addresses it has used is maintained. Netdisco gets all its data, including
topology information, with SNMP polls and DNS queries. It does not use CLI
access and has no need for privilege passwords. Security features include a
wire-side Wireless Access Point (AP) locator.

Netdisco was created at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC),
Networking and Technology Services (NTS) department. UCSC continues to support
the development of Netdisco by providing development servers and financial
support. The Netdisco project is hosted by Source Forge.

Surely the correct approach is to say that people who don't want to see
it won't have it installed and people who have it installed want to be
able to use it from the menu. Programs which you have to have installed
and yet don't want to see in the menu probably shouldn't have (visible
by default) menu entries and should be dealt with by fixing that
program, not by removing all the other entries.

Having said that, I do agree with moving to .desktop by default, but
that does not address the issue of what should be in the menus, just
how.

Re: Reasonable maximum package size ?

2007-07-24 Thread Yaroslav Halchenko
Hi,

I am sorry to reincarnate the thread but I just wanted a simple
clarification and give also few cents of my thoughts.

   * it's better to have stuff distributed by Debian than sourced
elsewhere; we're a distribution, distributing is What We Do
   * it's better for users to have stuff in .deb's, so they don't
have to worry about different ways of managing different stuff
 on their system
   * some large data sets are just compiled -- it can be good to
distribute a small amount of source in a .deb and compile
 it on the user's machine.
2nd-ed all 3 points
   * some large data sets are compiled but it takes long enough that
we don't want to do it on user's machines, so we have the usual
source/deb situation here, and that's fairly easy too.
2nd-ed: just how subjective here is time/space tradeoff?

   * (***) many data sets don't fit those patterns though, but
 ...
   * (###) having .deb's generated on a user's system means they
 ...
to be mirrored separately; having .deb's be the source format
requires converting from the upstream source format adding
complexity and making it harder to trace how the packaging
 worked
Since most of the time we (programmers ;-)) hate to do things manually,
such repackaging should be automated anyways. I can say that quite a few
people make use of dh_wraporig which was devised for the cases when
source package had to be repackaged before entering debian:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2007/03/msg00268.html
So I see possibility and desire in a similar tool (or may be just
further development of dh_wraporig), so it could handle automatic
repackaging of the datasets.

I guess an evil solution to *** that doesn't cause problems with ###
would be to create a dummy source package that Build-Depends: on the
exact version of the package it builds, so that uploads include a
 ...
here is where I got stuck with such approach: conventionally I just
dgetted sources and tried to build the package with dpkg-buildpackage.
Of cause I failed to accomplish the mission since Build-Depends weren't
satisfied... so indeed it seems to be confusing or my brain is not
working now...

My suggestion (I might be duplicating someone else' idea, please pardon
me) -- for arch 'all': automatically download (copy) data during
build of the package. I know that somewhere now I will hit the roof in
debian policy, but for whatever it is worth.

automate building of the package so that smth like dh_wraporig downloads
(on_demand via debian/watch mechanism) the original dataset,
debian/rules prepares data and stuffs .deb packages with the necessary
data, so that .orig.tar.gz doesn't contain any data, and diff contains
all the scripts/instructions/verification (md5sum in
debian/README.Debian-source). I don't think this would require
Build-depends on the data packages.

Since _all packages need not be rebuild for each architecture, no buildd
box would have a problem, and anyone having internet access will be able
to rebuild the package if that needs to be done.

I'm not sure if avoiding duplicating the data (1G of data is bad, but
1G of the same data in a .orig.tar.gz _and_ a .deb is absurd) is enough
to just use the existing archive and mirror network, or if it'd still be
worth setting up a separate apt-able archive under debian.org somewhere
 for _really_ big data.
2nd-ed. At first I thought about adding another major (to complement
main,contrib,non-free) but that ruins orthogonality since we would need
main-data,contrib-data... So, it was a bad idea. Thus, separate apt rep
like data.debian.org with fine-grained sections (science/med,
science/bio, etc) would allow easy and selective (debmirror
--exclude-deb-section=regex should be complemented with
--deb-section=regex, to make selection easier than exclusion of
everything besides necessary sections) mirroring. I think that any
research group using Debian should have their own debian mirror anyways
;) and now just 1 more mirror for data specific to their needs, but from
the global debian mirror.

I don't think we should be adding more programs to the archive that
can't handle multibyte encodings. I believe the default character
encoding for new installations is UTF-8.

Re: kydpdict relationships

Manoj Srivastava [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Hmm. Let us examine the two common cases:
  a) User has not bought proprietary dictionaries.
 i) With recommends installed by default; they can have a working
package. Without that, the binary package is useless.
ii) With Depends, the binary ackage works.
  b) User has proprietary dictionaries.
 i) With recommends, the user can just install the proprietary
package first. The system works
ii) With Depends, there is a possible conflict; or else you have a
useless package installed, whether you want it or not.

If we are going to transition to installing Recommends by
default in lenny, I would say go with the Recommends, since it caters
  to more users.

Or else, use Depends, but that makes the system less efficient
for those of our users who decide they want a partially proprietary
solution (which we promise to support as well, as I recall).

Given that we're talking about only 500KB or so, Depends seems more
attractive to me as being a bit more reliable and working in more
configurations, *provided* that the presence of the free dictionary
doesn't break the non-free one when they're both installed. Which I think
was left as an open question from the original message.

(I currently can't ues Recommends by default because of lsb-release, so I
have a bit of a vested interest in solutions that don't require that.)

Surely the correct approach is to say that people who don't want to
see it won't have it installed and people who have it installed want
to be able to use it from the menu. Programs which you have to have
installed and yet don't want to see in the menu probably shouldn't
have (visible by default) menu entries and should be dealt with by
fixing that program, not by removing all the other entries.

Haven't heard of multi-user systems, have we? What if some of the

The latter might be fine as a local policy; but surely is not
correct as a Debian default. We should make it _possible_ to implement
a local policy of hiding information from users; but we must not let
information hiding be the default; nor the only possible local policy.

   * addons adds/removals/upgrades
 - upgraded: supertab (the version we used to ship was superseded by a new
plugin, also register it as an addon which was missing)
   (Closes: #431148)
 - upgraded: bufexplorer, which now use :drop only if a gui is available
   (Closes: #433800)
 - upgraded: nerd-commenter (and renamed the addon, since upstream changed
the .vim filename to NERD_commenter.vim). Added a debian/NEWS entry
about some changes in this new upstream version
 - added: lbdbq (Closes: #430685) ... which now quotes expanded names to
avoid dangerous characters like commas (Closes: #431820)

Closes: 431477
Changes:
 gtk+2.0 (2.11.6-1) experimental; urgency=low
 .
   [ Loic Minier ]
   * Don't run the directfb testsuite on kfreebsd as it hangs; proposed patch
 by Petr Salinger; closes: #431477.
 .
   [ Josselin Mouette ]
   * Move manual pages of binaries in /usr/sbin to section 8.
   * update-icon-caches: new script, updates the icon caches in a given
list of directories. It is meant to be used by packages shipping
 icons, in the postinst/postrm.
For transition purposes, icon caches are currently updated but not
created if they don't already exist.
   * Install this script and its manual page in libgtk2.0-bin.
 .
   [ Loic Minier ]
   * Call dh_shlibdeps separately for the udeb and add a
-l/usr/lib/libcairo-directfb/lib/ flag to ensure libcairo-directfb2 is
 found.
   * New upstream development release, with API additions.
 - Bump up shlibs to = 2.11.6.
 - Refresh patches 006_proper-directfb-modules,
   015_default-fallback-icon-theme, 040_filechooser_single-click to apply
   cleanly.
 - Update patches 009_gtk-export-filechooser, 033_treeview_resizing to
   apply; update relibtoolizing patch, 070_mandatory-relibtoolize.
   * Update patch 009_gtk-export-filechooser:
 - gtk/Makefile.am (gtk_private_h_sources, gtk_semi_private_h_sources):
   export gtkquery.h and gtksearchengine.h as semi-private.
 - gtk/gtkquery.h: add GTK_FILE_CHOOSER_ENABLE_UNSUPPORTED #ifdef guard.
 - gtk/gtksearchengine.h: add GTK_FILE_CHOOSER_ENABLE_UNSUPPORTED #ifdef

Description:
 xfonts-base - standard fonts for X
Closes: 434288
Changes:
 xfonts-base (1:1.0.0-5) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   [ Branden Robinson ]
   * Update Debian copyright file.
+ Remove Adobe copyright notices; nothing in the upstream sources
case-insensitive matches adobe, let alone bears a copyright notice of
   theirs.
+ Add many copyright notices, licenses, and other notations of status
(such as public domain) from upstream sources.
+ Add other information required by Debian Policy §12.5.
   * Update package description.
+ Stop claiming that the package also provides font file manipulation
utilities. It no longer does; those moved to xfonts-utils. (To aid
transitions, xfonts-base should have grown a dependency on xfonts-utils,
but etch is out now and it's too late to help people upgrading from
   sarge.)
+ Stop documenting the dependency on xutils; debhelper now worries about
this for us via dh_installxfonts and ${misc:Depends}, so the dependency
is no longer directly our responsibility.
 .
   [ Julien Cristau ]
   * Add upstream URL to debian/copyright (closes: #434288). Thanks, Josip
