Bug#275388: mounting at boot time under grub
I dropped all references to specific boot loaders since there are over a dozend different ones used with linux and people beagan to complain that I didn't mention the one they use. To pull out a cliche, this is letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. Covering the two most popular boot loaders (lilo and grub), together accounting for certainly well over 90% of the Debian users, and in particular nearly 100% of the less experienced users, is GOOD. Covering them all might be perfect, but just because it is impractical to do the perfect thing doesn't mean you should abandon a good thing. It is not a slight on other boot loaders to not cover them - it is completely reasonable to just cover the N most popular boot loaders, for some N, and leave it at that. -- Barak A. Bug#195481: fragmented location info: hassle for users especially mobile ones
Well okay, granted ... but the locale would almost always be explicitly set, and wouldn't change when eg the lat/long are modified.
Bug#195725: RFA: tkisem (graphical SPARC emulator) binutils-sparc
Package: wnpp Because I no longer use them myself I am looking for someone to take over the below packages. (The second, binutils-sparc, exists only to service the first and is a trivial modification of binutils-avr, so I list them together.) I'm not swizzling the Maintainer: field to QA because I'll deal with any major problems if necessary. For now. But if anyone would like to take them over, please be my guest! Package: tkisem Version: 4.5.12-5 Depends: binutils-sparc ..., tk8.3 | wish, ... Description: Graphical SPARC emulator Instructional SPARC Emulator using tk. This SPARC CPU simulator has nice graphics, and is very good for learning assembly language programming. Particularly suited to the textbook Computer Systems: Architecture, Organization, and Programming by Arthur Maccabe. Package: binutils-sparc Version: 2.11.92.0.12.3-4 Build-Depends: ..., toolchain-source, ... Depends: libc6 (= 2.2.4-4), binutils (= 2.11.92.0.12.3-4) Description: Binary utilities that support the SPARC target. The programs in this package are used to manipulate binary and object files that may have been created for the SPARC architecture. This package is primarily for SPARC developers and cross-compilers and is not needed by normal users or developers, except users of the tkisem SPARC emulator.
Bug#195481: fragmented location info: hassle for users especially mobile ones
Package: general Severity: wishlist I'm not sure where to assign this, but ... there are too many packages in Debian that ask for your location or variants thereof, all in an uncoordinated fashion. To whit: time zone latitude/longitude (wmmoonclock, wmsun, various mapping programs) nearest ICAO station (wmweather) paper size a4 vs letter (papersize library, and a couple stragglers) language (locale, and a couple stragglers) country (something must request this I'll bet) altitude (again I bet something uses this) Right now, this stuff is easy to get inconsistent, and each one requires effort to figure out. Some of them are even tricky to change, or even to remember. It would be nice if these would *ALL* assume default values given just one, on both a global system-wide basis and over-ridable on a per-user and per-session basis. In other words, when I move my laptop I should be able to put in the new lat/long and, assuming everything else is set up to default, all these other things should be filled in with their most probably values. Eg the nearest ICAO station, the most popular language in the location I'm in, the size of paper they use there, etc. Similarly, if I fill in just a country and it is a small country, and I haven't filled in lat/long or anything else, everything should snap to reasonable values. If that's not enough to figure out eg the time zone, at least the timezone menu should start with a list of timezones in that country. If I fill in a lat/long outside that country, it should give me a warning. If I fill in a city it should take the lat/long in the center of that city. If some user fills in a different country city, blam everything should just work for that user. I think this could be accomplished with appropriate debconf stuff and a location-related-query executable that looks at global info, per-user files in their home directory, and environment variables. Or maybe a library, for easier retrofitting into little programs. With some modular architecture so one can add new location-related values which can be derived from lat/long/alt, and which therefore if filled in can also be used to constrain this and therefore other derivable values.
multiarchitecture binaries - technical obstacles?
Years ago, NeXT modified GCC and the rest of the GNU tools to allow them to produce multi-architecture binaries, so that a single binary executable could run on both 68k and i386 platforms. They also had a tool that could strip out hunks for unwanted architectures. Maybe that code has decayed, and maybe it had problems ... but it sure would be nice if it could be resurrected and used by us, so that Debian became able to produce multiplatform .deb containing such multi-architecture executables. Here are a few potential benefits: it would reduce the total volume of the archive; eliminate separate i386/Pentium/686/MMX-optimized packages; reduce the burden on the autobuilders; reduce cross-architecture version-skew; catch cross-architecture compilation problems earlier; ensure widespread availability of binary packages for multiple architectures; make the upcoming deployment of competing 64-bit CPUs from Intel and AMD less painful for our users; and be a unique feather in Debian's cap. I'm hoping that people familiar with the tool chain could share something about the status of those old multi-architecture features, and how much of a hassle (or of an impossibility) it might be to get them working.

ITP: ADOLC (automatic differentiation library)
I'm putting the finishing touches on a packaged version of ADOLC. This is a low-performance but convenient automatic differentiation library which uses C++ overloading of arithmetic operators. The upstream sources contain no copyright notice, but the author has agreed to place the entire work under the GPL. Unless there is some reason to change these, I am planning to use Package name: libadolc1 Library name: libad.so
possible debian cluster
It looks like a big Linux Beowulf cluster kind of thing is going to be built here at UNM. Hundreds of CPUs, at least. I'd like to convince them to use Debian and 21264s, but that's up in the air. One big issue is finding someone good who could be in charge of systems software for the beast. So, if some Debian developer is - competent to handle the networking setup benchmarking, PVM, etc - potentially desirous of a job doing said - in Albuquerque New Mexico please drop me a line, as it might result in (1) a job, and (2) a big cluster running Debian. BTW, a cluster of 256 dual-CPU 21264s with a fast disk farm all connected to the national high-speed supercomputer networks could recompile a lot of packages quite quickly. -- Barak A. Pearlmutter [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.cs.unm.edu/~bap/
Re: Official CDROM
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: Instead of the two-cd's-without-source, I'd rather see a special lightweight _single_ Debian cd for i386 that carries: ... A cd like this, with approximately 250 meg binaries, 250 meg sources, 40 meg documentation, 10 meg kernels and a 100 meg live filesystem would make an excellent cover cd for computer magazines. That's a great idea. One minor suggestion: cut down the numbers a touch, so there's about 100 meg free. This would allow people to add stuff in customizing the CD. Last semester I needed to cut a dozen CDs for a course I was teaching. I wanted to include a version of Scheme for a couple architectures (Windows, MacOS, etc) and Emacs for the same set of architectures, some manuals (R4RS and the like) plus some software of my own. It all added up to under 100 meg, so to fill out the CD I included the Debian 1.3 i386 binary bootable CD stuff, plus non-US and much of non-free. I know that a number of people used it to install Debian on their home machines. The setup you describe would be even more suited to applications like that. And I'm sure magazines wouldn't mind a bit of free space on the disk for some custom stuff either. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Package: xbase Version: 3.1.2-9 The /etc/X11/window-managers file constructed by xbase.postinst contains fvwm but omits fvwm2. This is somewhat disconcerting if the fvwm2 package is installed, but not the fvwm package. Another option would be for the fvwm2 package's installation scripts to add an appropriate entry to /etc/X11/window-managers

Package: xbase Version: 3.1.2-9 The program /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config contains a typo. When it asks about the mouse device, it suggests as a possibility the nonexistent /dev/tty00. The proper suggestion would be /dev/ttyS0.

Bug#4440: recommended package ftape not available
Package: taper Version: 6.2-1 The taper package recommends the ftape package, which is not available (at least on the cdrom distribution I have, or on the debian archives I searched.) Since ftape is covered by the GPL, if it is recommended then it should be provided. Unless it is bug ridden --- in which case naive users should not be recommended to seek it out, and instead an explanatory warning should be given. Or if it integrated into Linux 2.x kernels, then perhaps the recommendation should be deleted, or perhaps the kernel package should provide ftape.
Bug#4443: bin86 (for as86) recommendation
Package: kernel-source-2.0.6 Version: 2.0.6-0 The package currently Depends: binutils | gas but actually gas isn't enough: as86 is needed to compile the kernel, and that program is in the bin86 package. Which should at least be recommended. Similarly recommending the gcc package might not be a bad idea.
Bug#4441: documentation typo in setup script
Package: cdtool Version: 1.0-5 during setup, a prompt reads ... the actuall device ... In actuality, actual actually only has one L.
Bug#4445: documentation deficiency - install fresh non-debianized kernel
Package: kernel-source-2.0.6 Version: 2.0.6-0 I am an experienced linux person. Even have a little code in the kernel. Decided to give debian a shot. But I'd like to avoid learning about debian internals, to the extent possible. On the other hand, sometimes it is necessary to install the absolute latest kernel on my system. There should be a SHORT and SUCCINCT explanation of how to do that, that starts with cd to /usr/src, rm linux, untar linux-2.0..tar.gz, rename linux to blah and ends with reboot into the new kernel. It could assume familiarity with linux in general and how to compile a kernel in particular, because its job is to explain what is special about a debian system in this regard. (Because the documentation in the debian kernel sources package concerning how to debianize a kernel was so long and complicated and full of jargon specific to debian package maintenance, I was unable to follow it. I tried just compiling and installing the kernel and its modules as usual, and putting putting the kernel image and System.map in locations parallel to the ones that were already there, and it all seemed to work out okay, except for having to munge around with some module autoloading stuff to get the network rolling. But guessing should not be necessary here. And of course, I am not sure if I did things the right way, and updated all the right files. Maybe there's some script I should have invoked, which would have done the work automatically? Please, do tell!)

Bug#4448: dselect performance gripe
Package: dpkg Version: 1.2.14elf When one fires up dselect, puts all packages on hold, chooses one tiny little package to install --- say, jgraph --- then hits the big install button ... it takes FOREVER as a long long list of skipping deselected package mumble ...'s scrolls by at an agonizingly slow pace. This should not take so long. And also (unless some internal dselect extra verbosity switch is enabled) it's pretty useless verbiage. It seems to me that installing one package using dselect should be about as pleasant and fast as installing it directly using dpkg (which I am making a point of not learning, to preserve my purity as naive debian critic).
Bug#4450: dselect package downgrades
Package: dpkg Version: 1.2.14elf dselect knows about upgrades (packages on the currently available medium that are upgrades of currently installed version) and offers the user the option of taking advantage of them. But it doesn't have much notion of packages that are available on the current medium but are *less* current than the currently installed versions. dselect should make a point of preventing users from inadvertently downgrading packages, and (in order to ease their nerves) should, when appropriate, make the user aware that this functionality is present. The current behavior, with lines like *== Req base mount2.5l-1 2.5j-1 Tools for mounting and m listed as simply among --- Up to date installed packages --- is scary. It should be under something like --- Super-current installed packages --- so the user knows that dselect won't go off downgrading things without serious explicit user overrides of default behavior being applied.

Will I be done before dinnertime? A simple indicator on the current package summary line in the middle of the screen would give a big psychological boost: adduser (36/857) installed; ...
