I've never done this myself, but I'm sure I've seen it happen in the past: If you're replacing foo with newfoo, you upload a new dummy package foo that contains absolutely nothing, but depends on newfoo. This way apt-get upgrade will get the latest (empty) foo and thus drag in newfoo with it. Many thanks. That is probably the best solution currently possible. I will do it this way, and will request the removal of the dummy package from the archives after a sufficiently long transition period. how to implement a renamed package
Hello, I am maintaing the Debian package puzzle and have a problem with the new upstream version. The package and program has been renamed by upstream to tree-puzzle, because there was a conflict with another program named puzzle. I was considering to make a new package tree-puzzle which conflicts and replaces puzzle, but this way the users of puzzle would not get the automatical upgrade of this new upstream version with 'apt-get upgrade'. Thus, how can I automatically replace the package puzzle with the new package tree-puzzle? Greetings, Guenter -- Linux: Who needs GATES in a world without fences?
Re: how to implement a renamed package
Hi, On Sat, May 05, 2001 at 12:39:48PM -0700, David Whedon wrote: This is discussed in the Developer's Reference [1]: 9.3 Replacing or renaming packages Sometimes you made a mistake naming the package and you need to rename it. In this case, you need to follow a two-step process. First, set your debian/control file to replace and conflict with the obsolete name of the package (see the Debian Policy Manual for details). Once you've uploaded that package, and the package has moved into the archive, file a bug against ftp.debian.org asking to remove the package with the obsolete name. Thanks, - I know this and have done it previously in the case of zicq and krolden. However, what I really wanted to know is, how this (or any other) procedure can take care that the users of the old package will get the renamed package automatically updated with 'apt-get upgrade'? Otherwise, the new (renamed) upstream version could be easily overlooked and the users would just wonder why the old package is removed from the archives. As far as I know the standard procedure depends on the active selection of the renamed package, and the only replacement-effect is that it will remove the old package when it is installed. But the problem is: How shall the user know that the new package replaces another package with a different name? Cheers, Guenter -- Linux: Who needs GATES in a world without fences?
Re: Proposing task-debian
Hi, On Sun, Apr 29, 2001 at 03:38:04AM +0200, Christian Hammers wrote: Recently I found two packages, debsig-verify and apt-listchanges only by coincidence because I read in a mailing list about them. Generally, I like the idea of a task-debian metapackage, because I also just discovered some useful tools by mere accident. However, please do not make such a task-package depend on debsig-verify, because after the installation of this program you cannot install any debpackage with dpkg, dselect or apt anymore, because dpkg by default uses debsig-verify when it is installed, but debsig-verify refuses to recognize any package as correctly signed (at least with the default configuration)!!! Gnome keyboard shortcuts stopped working
Hello, I am running Sid (daily updated) and currently have a problem with Gnome: Before I could access the programm menus with the keyboard shortcuts (Alt + undelined_character). This worked with all Gnome apps under any window manager. It still works with KDE apps, but since a few days the Gnome apps only show the underlined_character in the menues in grey (inactive) color and the shortcuts no longer work. Anybody else experiencing the same problem, or knowing what's the reason for this behaviour? Best wishes, Guenter -- Linux: Who needs GATES in a world without fences?
gnome run command
Hi, does anybody know if it is possible to start the built-in run command (similar to xexec) of the gnome-panel, outside the gnome desktop, e.g. under icewm. I tried to find the command's name but did not succeeed. I also tried to find it out by looking into the process-list, but the start of the run command is not shown as a separate process under gnome. If a start independent of Gnome should not be possible, I would ITP gRun for Debian which does the job very well. Xexec is a pain in the ass, because even if the focus is given to the window, you first have to click inside to be able to write a command. This is not the case with gRun or the built-in command. Any hints would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Guenter -- Linux: Who needs GATES in a world without fences?

Just a guess tho. Well, I thought so myself. But the real problem is that neither me, nor apparently you could find out what really happened. This seems to be a shortcoming in Debian's removal procedures. I suggest that the intent to remove a package should always be filed as a bug to this package or even better as a bug to wnpp-peudopackage, so that the information can be traced with reasonable efforts. Would it be o.k. to file this suggestion as a wishlist bug against ftp.debian.org? E: Package fancylogin has no installation candidate I know this, but this does not explain what happened to this package that once existed. There is a bug #69002 filed against fancylogin which might be the reason for its removal. Here the same applies that I said above about w3mir. It should be possible to easily find out if and why a package was removed by checking its bugs or wnpp. There is a further weird package disappearance in unstable: all mgetty packages (execept mgetty-doc) are gone! http://bugs.debian.org/80640 Oops, I did not check the BTS again. That is really my stupid fault, - sorry. However, this bug was filed AFTER my first mail to this list, where I asked concerning the disappeared packages of mgetty and nobody answered. Hey, these are important packages. mgetty is not important, it's extra. That is a bit nitty-gritty, don't you think? I did not talk about the position in Debian (I of course know its Extra), but about the importance of these packages. Kind greetings, Guenter -- Linux: Who needs GATES in a world without fences?

Re: ITO: catdoc
Hi, I am no longer interested in maintaining the 'catdoc' package. However, I will continue my current level of inactive ownership of the package until such time as someone takes it over. I'd like to adopt this package. Oops, I already adopted the package on 24th Dec. Sorry, but I did not know that anybody else was interested in adopting it. It had announced my ITA a day before. intent to package countrycodes
Hi, I intend to package Country Codes 1.0.3, a text-based ISO3166 country code finder (yes, I know there is a Perl module that does the same, but this little tool is easier and more flexible). The package is actually already made and lintian clean. It can be downloaded from http://www.bechly.de/debian/. However, I have just applied to become a Debian maintainer some time ago, thus it will probably still need some time till I can upload the package to unstable (unless I will find a sponsor). how to setup an apt-getable site
Hi, I just have some weird problems to make my uploaded inofficial deb-packages apt-getable. The referring site is http://www.bechly.de/debian/. I had all five Debian packages in a local directory called 'debian' and correctly run dpkg-scanpackages on it. After adjusting my apt sources.list it was no problem at all to access the local directory with the Packages.gz file with apt-get or dselect. I then uploaded the complete directory to my website via ftp (binary mode). Now I can access the site with 'apt-get update' without errors, but as soon as I use 'apt-get install foo' the package foo is downloaded but the installation fails with the error 'Size mismatch'. I checked the referring manpages and docs, and several Debian books, and did not find the slightest clue (therefore PLEAAASE no RTFMs). Any help would be greatly appreciated. intent to package snap
Hi, I intend to package snap 0.02a, a Perl-based Napster client for console. 5 inofficial packages for download
Hi, I just uploaded my first five Debian packages. They include the console programs journal, mrename, ncps, saydate, and snap. The URL is http://www.bechly.de/debian/. I also included a Packages file generated with dpkg-scanpackages, thus the site should be apt-getable. Since I am no official maintainer yet, I cannot upload the packages to unstable. Anyway, I would appreciate any testing of my newbie packages and of course would welcome any offer of sponsorship.
