[ Tshepang Lekhonkhobe ] . * VERIFY: Add a check for debsums before running the command, and add a Suggests on it. * PURGE: use apt-get instead of dpkg, in order to get a yes/no prompt. * LIST-LOG: Remove custom logging implementation - was fragile: sometimes info was lost during a run - was expensive: checked system cache both before and after the operation to determine what happened; it also did this for commands which didn't even change the system cache - did not log cache changes when they were done by other tools (apt, aptitude, synaptic) - APT log looks much better * SHOW: use aptitude instead of apt-cache - the output is prettier - better virtual package handling; it displays real packages that provide the functionality implied by that virtual package, instead of just vomiting package not found! - only displays info on the installed version; else, the latest available; apt-get showed all available versions - the trade-off is that the command is a bit slower, but what's the rush :) * LIST-RECOMMENDED: new command that displays packages which are auto-installed via Recommends, and are without installed dependencies. (Closes: #482147) * PURGE: also purge packages that were installed via a Recommends and have nothing depending on them; this makes PURGE-DEPEND reduntant. * REMOVE: also remove packages that were installed via a Recommends and have nothing depending on them; this makes REMOVE-DEPEND reduntant. * AUTO-REMOVE: Made reduntant by above REMOVE change, so removed. * AUTO-INSTALL: Deprecated in favour of --yes INSTALL, so removed from docs. * NEWS: 'new' command that displays package NEWS file(s). * AVAILABLE: AVAILABLE: removed a badly-named and redundant command; POLICY command does the same thing. * INSTALL: accept -y|--yes option, an alias for apt-get's --assume-yes. * UPGRADE: accept -y|--yes option, too. * FIX-INSTALL: accept -n|--noauth option. * FIX-MISSING: accept -n|--noauth option, too. * REINSTALL: accept -n|--noauth and -y|--yes option. * HELP: introduce the convenient wajig HELP COMMAND functionality. * Remove supression of error messages; Not a good idea. * Add dependency on aptitude; It must have been forgotten. * Cleanse packaging, drastically :-) * Stop using python-support; There was no need for it. This was the default option, but suggestion offered in #424668 is more sane. . * CHANGELOG: Add -x|--pager option to allow scrolling. This also implies -v|--verbose=1 (see above). . * DIST-UPGRADE: Add -b|--backup=BKDIR option to allow backing up of packages before dist-upgrade. . * BUILD: Now uses sudo instead of fakeroot to avoid permission-related. build failures for some packages (EG, fakeroot cdbs). Huge (uninformed) guess, but apt may be preferring packages from repositories it can verify the contents of. Besides, if the versions are the same, then the contents should be the the same too, and (modulo bandwidth charges) which one you get from shouldn't matter. BTW, the new (twisted-based) apt-proxy rocks hard, if it's your traffic allowances you're worried about (and who wouldn't be in Australia, given what we get charged). - Matt Thanks for the guess Matt. I've added a Releases.gpg and it did not make any difference. Traffic's not the issue - I download all new upgrades early each morning automatically and they go into this local archive so that when I get up, a distupgrade used to flash by - not now since it has to grab them all again :-( I'll have a look at apt-proxy. Thanks, Graham What does your sources.list look like? It seems like file:// and copy:// urls behave differently with the new secure apt. E.g. they don't get md5sum checked. Re: improvements to apt: my thanks to the developers
Received Mon 03 Nov 2003 6:07am +1100 from Luke Kenneth Casson Leighton: ... so, with that background, i am absolutely DELIGHTED to note that apt has some additional information that it displays: it shows up the recommended and suggested packages. this is INCREDIBLY helpful because by installing one package i can go hm, maybe i should add that, too. possible future improvements on this theme could include options, including in /etc/apt/apt.conf, to _always_ add the recommended packages to the list of packages to be installed. I wanted something like this too, so I put it into wajig (a command line front end to apt and friends): wajig installr xserver-xfree86 installs the package and all the recommended packages. Similarly wajig installs xserver-xfree86 for suggested packages. And for both: wajig installrs xserver-xfree86 Regards, Graham
Re: aag - wrapper for apt-get with support for recommend and suggests field
Received Tue 29 Apr 2003 2:35pm +1000 from Alexander Wirt: Hi folks, i have written a small wrapper for apt-get that makes it possible to install all recommended and/or suggested Packages for a Package too. ... I've also got the same functionality in my apt-get wrapper, wajig, as in: wajig installr pkg wajig installs pkg wajig installrs pkg Wajig is installed with: apt-get install wajig Regards, Graham
wajig: Simplified command line admin for Debian
Wajig is a simplified command line interface to many of the typical Debian administration tasks, including package management and configuration, and daemon control. It is essentially a collection of tricks of the Debian trade packaged up into one python program. Underneath it uses apt-get, dpkg, apt-cache, wget, and much more. On the surface it is based around a collection of commands that hopefully make some sense. Wajig can be installed by adding the following to /etc/apt/sources.list (not yet an official Debian package): deb http://edm.act.cmis.csiro.au/debian ./ and then apt-get update and apt-get install wajig. Wajig is designed to run as a normal user, using sudo as required, but can also run as root without any extra setup. Using sudo requires a little setting up as described with the doc command wajig doc. Try wajig help for a list of common commands and wajig -v help for a complete list of available commands. Examples include: wajig update (= apt-get update) wajig install less (= apt-get install less) wajig new (list new packages since last update) wajig newupgrades (list packages upgraded since last update) wajig updatealts editor(update the default editor) wajig restart apache (restart the apache daemon) wajig listfiles less (list the files supplied by the less pkg) wajig whichpkg stdio.h (what package supplies this header file) wajig whatis rats (one line description of the pakacge rats) wajig orphans (list libraries not required by other pkgs) and many more (see below for current complete list). Wajig has evolved over many years and there's a small band of users. It has some of the same aims as the feta package and I thought to wrap the extra wajig features into feta, but a number of users suggested that wajig should stay. So it was rewritten recently from being a shell script to a python program. It is available under the GPL. $ wajig -v help All wajig commands: autoclean Remove all superseded downloaded deb files bugCheck for reported bugs in package using the Debian Bug Tacker build Retrieve/unpack sources and build .deb for the named packages dist-upgrade Upgrade to a new distribution (installed and new rqd packages) clean Remove all downloaded deb files describe Provide a description of package (-v and -vv for more detail) docEquivalent to help with -verbose=2 editsourcesEdit the sources.list file which locates Debian archives findfile Search for a file within installed pacakges force Install package even if it overwrites files from other pkgs help Print documentation (detail depends on --verbose) hold Place listed packages on hold so they are not upgraded init Initialise or reset the wajig archive files installInstall (or upgrade) one or more packages or a .deb file integrity Check the integrity of installed packages (through checksums) lastupdate Identify when an update was last performed list List the status of every known package listalts List the objects that can have alternatives configured listfiles List the files that are supplied by the named package listnames List all known packages or those containing supplied string newList packages that became available since last update newupgradesList packages newly available for upgrading orphansList libraries not required by any installed package purge Remove one or more packages and configuration files reconfigureReconfigure the named installed packages reinstall Reinstall each of the named packages remove Remove one or more packages (see also purge) repackage Generate a .deb file for an installed package reset Initialise or reset the wajig archive files search Search for packages containing listed words source Retrieve and unpack sources for the named packages status Show the version and available version of packages toupgrade List packages with newer versions available for upgrading update Update the list of downloadable packages updatealts Update the default alternative for things like x-window-manager upgradeUpgrade all of the installed packages whatis For each package named obtain a one line description whichpkg Find the package that supplies the given command or file Command line options: -h|--help Print usage message. -q|--quiet Do system commands everything quietly. -t|--teaching Trace the sequence of commands performed. -v|--verbose=n Increase (or set) the level of verbosity (to n). Bug#3951: kernel-image-2.0.7-0 postinst looks for /bin/perl
Frank Neumann wrote to Graham Williams on 08 Aug 1996 03:11:32 +1000: Graham My vanilla installation of Debian 1.1 seems to have perl Graham only in /usr/bin/perl. Frank I noticed this too, after having built a base.tar.gz for Frank Debian on m68k. The bug is not in kernel-headers, but in Frank boot-floppies, which failed to create the link for the base Frank system. boot-floppies-1.1.1.10 fixed it. The bug report Frank should be closed (I won't do that, I'm not the maintainer Frank ;-), but a new base should probably be built. Thanks for the information. Checking the various Debian and Dpkg documentation seems to imply that all scripts should refer to /usr/bin/perl rather than /bin/perl. Not sure if it rates as a bug though if the scripts of a package don't. Cheers
Bug#3951: kernel-image-2.0.7-0 postinst looks for /bin/perl
Package: kernel-image Version: 2.0.7-0 The postinst and prerm scripts of kernel-image have as their first line: #! /bin/perl My vanilla installation of Debian 1.1 seems to have perl only in /usr/bin/perl. The problem is exhibited with: $ dpkg --install kernel-image-2.0.7-0.deb ... dpkg (subprocess): unable to execute post installation script: no \ such file or directory ... returned error status 2 ... $ The unpacking succeeds but the configuration fails. If I edit the kernel-image-2.0.7-0.postinst script in /var/lib/dpkg/info to add the /usr to the path of perl and do configure it all works nicely: $ dpkg --configure kernel-image-2.0.7 -- Dr [EMAIL PROTECTED] ,--_|\ Tel: (+61 6) 216 7042 Senior Research Scientist, Data Mining / \ Fax: (+61 6) 216 7112 CSIRO Div of Info Tech, Aust Nat Univ \_.--_*/ GPO Box 664 Canberra URL:http://www.dit.csiro.au/~gjw v ACT 2601 Australia
