Bits from the DPL (Debian and OASIS)
an impact on Debian in the future. For instance, the PKI technical committee is trying to work out standards for a common and secure PKI infrastructure. There are many other technical committees which are infrastructural: XDI Technical Committee, eXtensible Access Control Markup Language TC, Directory Services Markup Language TC, etc., etc. Our membership in OASIS gives Debian developers access to these groups, access which can be exploited to to increase the chance of the standard being a success, to raise the profile of Debian developers, and to improve Debian itself. We believe this capability is being under-utilized. For information on how to join an OASIS Technical Committee, contact Mark Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED]. OASIS-related Mailing List == A new mailing list has been created on Alioth [6] for the purpose of forwarding all OASIS messages received by Mark Johnson, the official Debian delegate to OASIS. Interested developers can subscribe to the list to keep informed about OASIS activity. The list can also serve as a forum for discussing Debian/OASIS related issues. -- [1] http://www.oasis-open.org [2] http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook [3] http://www.oasis-open.org/specs/tr9401.html [4] http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/download.php/4952/wd-entity-xml-catalogs-1.0_2e.html [5] http://sourceforge.net/projects/docbook/ [6] http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/debian-xml-sgml-oasis -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED] signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Re: USELINUX CFP

If someone in the Boston area would be willing to help organize a Debian BOF and other activities, that would be great. Did anyone submit something about Debian to USELINUX? It would be a pity if nothing Debian related was presented. I asked Mako if he wants to submit something about Debian-NP but haven't received an answer. FWIW, I might be at USENIX and could participate if there's a BOF or something. Note that the deadline for USELINUX is today! Re: Complaint
* Ingo Juergensmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2003-12-14 13:20]: - As http://buildd.debian.org/stats/graph-week-big.png shows, there are some archs already have a working wanna-build access since days, namely mips, mipsel and powerpc. I really feel discriminated by this situation. And it's clearly an evil plot against you/m68k as can be seen in the graph above. If I look at it, I see that most buildds are not working, with some exceptions. It seems as if the archs that are managed by Ryan Murray are preferred in their restoring process This might be related to the fact that Ryan is responsible for the whole buildd infrastructure. Clearly it must be easier to get his buildds running, then others, as the latter involves coordination with others, etc. And please remember that this is not a competition between e.g. mips and m68k. We're trying to restore our services, and obviously the crucial or easy ones come first. You have to start with on buildd, and it's fairly obvious to start with the one you're in control of. whereas others doesn´t even get a status update when Mails like http://mailman.nocrew.org/pipermail/m68k-build/2003-November/007792.html or http://mailman.nocrew.org/pipermail/m68k-build/2003-December/007932.html show that updates are being made, or information being asked for needed for the restoration. - James Troup wrote then (as a reply I think) on Thu, December 11, 2003 19:34 a mail to m68k-build list to get a status about the m68k buildd machines (new ssh key, kernel info, etc.). He then got answers he asked for. So basically your complaint is that after 3 days (including the weekend, so effectively 1 business day) it's not fixed yet. Sorry, I just cannot take your complaint seriously. I'm not saying that everything's perfect, but I know that debian-admin is working as hard as they can. I also know that James for example fixed nm.d.o on Friday and worked on a very important issue which is more important than any buildd (or than nm.d.o). And he's away for the weekend. Of course, I'd like to see all issues fixed instantly; but not having fixed something non-essential after one business day is not that bad, given we have ~700 RC bugs. Why don't you contribute something worthwhile and complain about those people (to them), (or send in patches, hint hint). Yes, it would be nice if more people were working on our buildd infrastructure. Just giving root to every Debian developer so they can fix their issues themselves is not going to work. So we're left with having well respected people doing the work. So, contribute some work, gain respect, and help fix the situation. But with complaints like these, people will just start ignoring you. -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: recovery status update
* Aaron M. Ucko [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2003-12-09 15:37]: Although I agree that there is definitely something to be said for this approach, I would like to note an additional issue with it: - how to verify that katie will process uploads as expected (I'd been running dinstall -n, via dput -D; I suppose it would be possible to upload separately to the mirror and test there, but that's awkward.) dinstall -n is not as useful as it was in the past. In the past, you'd have to wait until dinstall run to see whether your package is okay; nowadays, packages are checked regularly (I think every 15 minutes), so you get almost immediate feedback anyway. -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: recovery status update
* Julian Gilbey [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2003-12-09 09:49]: - how to give developers the possibility of seeing what's in the queue (daily rsyncs are not good enough for this; I've frequently pulled packages from the accepted queue to check that bug fixes have been correctly applied) The queue could theoretically just be rsynced every 15 minutes or so. -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Services I'd like from auric
* Kevin Rosenberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2003-12-13 15:56]: of discussing information we'd like from auric, what's on my mind today is the ability to check the NEW queue. Thus, if the ftpmasters are planning on a long-term restriction on auric, mirroring the data in the new queue [at least filenames and upload dates] would be of significant help to me. * Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2003-12-14 03:13]: I frequently find myself running 'locate' over the morgue and poking around in the results in an attempt to figure out when a package was removed and what it looked like when it was, usually when working on Right, I use both the new queue and the morgue as well. If auric remains restricted, these directories should definitely be mirrored. I'm not sure whether this is solvable without exporting the morgue, which I'm aware would be a big slice of some machine's resources. Files in the morgue could be expired on a more frequent basis than those on the mirror. Then we'd all have access to it, but it wouldn't take up the same resources on both machines. -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[ Responding to this since I've been BCCed. ] * Ingo Juergensmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2003-11-14 11:34]: I´ve been told that this is caused by some toolchain and kernel problems on mips that make the buildds running slow. I talked to Ryan about the mips port about two weeks ago; I'll try to summarize the information he gave me. The kernel problem you refer to is that the kernel does not use the secondary cache of the chips. Another problem is that one machine (hosted by Flo in Germany) only has 64 MB RAM. Apparently, Flo has more RAM, though; otherwise, I have recently been given some RAM which I'll send him once I'll be back in Europe (in December). The major problem why mips is not keeping up, however, is that the hard drive of a build machine in the States died recently. Unfortunately, this machine is much faster than the other machines in use. I am trying to get a new hard drive for this machine, but unfortunately the hardware donations manager is currently on vacation and hasn't responded to my mail yet; we might just buy one if he doesn't respond soon. Alternatively, in anyone is reading this who can spare a SCSI disk (in the States, for an Indy, see http://sgistuff.g-lenerz.de/machines/indy.html), please get in contact. This would help to improve the situation drastically. Everything went well with that machine - until we directed the request to debian-admin to get wanna-build access for mips. The request was rejected with the following reasons (to my knowledge): - another machine is in the works - we don´t need your machine Yes, a fairly powerful machine has recently been donated to Debian and we're currently working out where to host it. Also, I have been in contact with SGI to get a very powerful system which should solve this problem for a long time. However, I am still working on this. I also offered Ryan to get a temporary system online, but he told me not to bother unless it's a very high performance system. IIUC, it takes some time to get it set up as a buildd, etc. In any case, your offer is welcome, and I think we can make use of it, albeit in a different way. You could make the box available to various Debian people. For example, the XFree86 maintainer is looking for someone to try building the current version in experimental on mips. That would be a great way your machine could be used. In any case, the situation is known and solutions are being worked on. Help is definitely appreciated. Also, while we are covering this topic, let me mention that mips is not a door stop architecture. While most machines which were _very_ powerful in the past are fairly dated now (e.g. SGI Indy), mips CPUs are actively being developed. There are CPUs with 2 cores and 1 GHz frequency. As a result and a sort of protest, I´ll stopped my m68k buildd, because I don´t know m68k that much to be of any help for this port anymore. A m68k has indicated that your machine is helpful for the m68k port, so I urge you to reconsider this decision. -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I don't read all mailing lists or threads; but I happend to read this one anyway. There are some newer _very_ powerful machines with MIPS processors, but AFAIK noone has actually ported Linux to them. Actually, Linux has been ported to all of the CPUs and systems I had in mind; in fact, ported by the vendor since there's demand for Linux. The 1 GHz dual-cores I mentioned are one from Broadcom (which drow also mentioned) and another one developed by PMC-Sierra. See http://www.broadcom.com/products/product.php?product_id=BCM1250 and http://www.momenco.com/products/jag-atx.html Wind River has a good table listing most newer mips boards which are available: http://www.windriver.com/products/bsp_web/bsp_architecture.html?architecture=MIPS Also, see the press release from MIPS to see what some companies have been working on: http://www.mips.com/content/PressRoom/PressReleases/2003-04-23 -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED]

AFAICT, i never sow this to happen, but if you say so i take it for sure The guidelines are outlined very clearly, see http://lists.debian.org/debian-newmaint/2003/debian-newmaint-200310/msg1.html (but i'd now like to have an example, just out of curiosity). It hasn't happend yet. You have to understand that rejections at the DAM stage are quite rare; most applications are rejected at the AM stage (and most of them because the applicants don't have enough time or interest, not because of philosophical or technical problems). Indeed you're right. To me we sohuld make things more open. Let's make da-manager a mailing list (debian-dam?) with archive AM reports contain sensitive information (such as e.g. photo IDs, although those fortunately not as much any more); hence, this is a bad idea. -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Luca - De Whiskey's - De Vitis [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2003-11-13 11:23]: That's correct, but there still are unclear point in this workflow. The problem is that a new complain pops up, this is yet another discussion with no backlog, so i've to build my opinion from what happened in the past. The past was not so happy with James (i still can't say that now is not like before). So what's exactly the problem you're trying to solve? The da-manager alias is archived and if a complain[sic] pops up someone can surely get access to the archive to see what happened. Although, if the complaint is a lack of response, you surely wouldn't find anything in the archive, would you? Anyway, I think you should come back when you have a problem you want to solve. -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Luca - De Whiskey's - De Vitis [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2003-11-14 05:30]: I understand, but they happen, and i think this to be a not-so-open point in our open structure. Yes, that's true but there might be a point in that. I also don't have access to the discussions or archives of the security team, the system admins, etc. And perhaps that's because they discuss sensitive information from time to time? In fact, I also don't see what people send to [EMAIL PROTECTED] And since you surely use your Debian address only for Debian, it should be handled in a transparent fashion? After all, you might become inactive and not every communication might be achieved in your bug reports. Indeed there is the issues about rejection being public, which should be also covered. Yes, this is true. We never really reached a conclusion on this, I think. and open: people on some keypoints in Debian structure do not have the same treatment. Yes, it's a shame, but it's just a fact of life that not everything can be 100% open. As to the DAM discussion being available to everyone, I refer you to thread on -private a few weeks ago. I'm sure some people would disagree with their personal information being posted all around. Of course if the do not reply mails i would not find anything, but being subscribed i could read directly what happen, or be aware of the fact that nothing happens. In the case of keyring and DAM in the past, we were well aware that nothing happened even without seeing the archives. ;-) Gladly, the situation has changed. Look, I'm not against being transparent; not at all. I try to be very open and approachable. But in some cases it just doesn't make sense. And I don't see the problem here; if you see a _concrete_ problem, please mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] However, afact both keyring and DAM seem to be running fairly smoothly at the moment. Trust is not a transitive property: i trusted you as DPL, this does FWIW, I'm not speaking as DPL at the moment; I use [EMAIL PROTECTED] in From: to indicate when I do. -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Luca - De Whiskey's - De Vitis [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2003-11-13 05:00]: As for the DAM, i wander why an AM racommends an applicant, but the DAM does not accept him. What does this mean? Is AM role relevant or in effect DAM is the real one who decides? If the latter, why haveing AM? Of course the DAM is the one who makes the decision; after all, he's the only one with the authority to make the decision (read the constitution). The AM prepares a report which the DAM uses to form a decision, but he doesn't necessarily have to form the same conclusions as the AM. Also note that the DAM's decision can be overridden. As you can see, this has nothing to deal with popular or unpopular decision. Right, just take Eray as an example (and note that the NM committee agreed 100% with the DAM's decision; yet the DAM got all the blame). -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bits from the DPL (a 6-month retrospective)
(which have been summarized on -d-d-a last week). - I talked to Lindows and Xandros to see how we can work together more closely. Xandros has agreed to help us with LSB testing. - I'm also in contact with Progeny who have been doing great LSB related work recently. - I talked to Conectiva to see how their APT changes can be merged back into our APT. - I put folks of MIPS in contact with our glibc maintainers and stressed the importance of better toolchain support. - I talked to Bradley Kuhn to discuss the relationship of Debian and the FSF. - I talked to a company who is interested in offering Debian certified laptops. This is going well and you can expect more information in an upcoming LWN. Again, this is just to give an overview of what I have been up to - I might have missed a few things. Looking through my mail folders, I see that I have sent over 700 messages as DPL in the last six months. I hope this overview was useful and gives you more transparency what your elected leader has been doing. Note that this posting was not made in an effort to show off, but rather in order to be transparent and accountable. Since I have acted as DPL for six months, I would appreciate feedback on how I have done so far. Please let me know what I have been doing well, and what you'd like to see more from me. (I'd especially like to hear from people who didn't vote for me, and people who voted for me but who are disappointed; but of course anyone is welcome to mail me, and you do not have to indicate whether you did vote for me or not ;-).) I hope I have lived up to your expectations so far and that I will successfully serve you for another six months (or more ;). -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED] signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Debian and the Linux Professional Institute (LPI)
In August, our representative with the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) [1], Christoph Lameter [2], attended a LPI meeting held at the LWE in San Francisco. Additionally, I have had very fruitful discussions with Evan Leibovitch, the president of LPI, since July. I'd like to give a brief overview of what is going on. First of all, a short introduction of the Linux Professional Institute (LPI). Quoting from their web site, LPI serves in the interest of increasing and supporting professional use of [free] software throughout [the] world. Specifically, they have developed several Linux certifications which are very popular and recognized. Christoph Lameter told me that more than 30,000 people have taken LPI exams so far. Evan Leibovitch added that in their 101 exam, LPI gives people the choice between being tested in either 'rpm' or 'dpkg' installation systems. Since they started doing this, about 5% of people taking LPI exams have opted for the 'dpkg' questions. This percentage varies quite a bit, though. For instance, it was closer to 25% in a recent exam lab LPI held in Sydney. LPI is currently developing level III exams which will also include system security. The level III exams are developed on the exam-devel mailing list at lpi.org and Debian developers interested in participating in these discussions, to help shape these exams, are welcome to subscribe to this list [3]. Furthermore, LPI is working on the development of a Desktop Certification. The certification will focus on the use of office applications under Linux. Basics such as printing, word processing, spreadsheets, as well as many other tasks, will be covered. Discussions on how to go about to developing this certification are in the initial stages. Debian desktop people interested in this helping develop this certification are encouraged to get in contact with me. Finally, LPI will be present at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) [4, 5] which will take place in Geneva in December. WSIS is a massive international conference which brings together representatives from every country and thousands of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in order to encourage the adoption of consistent, sustainable IT policies that protect rights and encourage commerce while encouraging high standards and ethics. LPI will be handing out Linux CDs at this conference, and I have promised him that Debian will supply an ISO image. The Debian Non-Profit sub-project [6] is working on a bootable live CD based on Morphix and I think this would be ideally suited for WSIS. Again, if you are interested in helping out, get in contact with me. I'm delighted to see more cooperation between Debian and LPI, and I will definitely stay in contact with Evan and also put him in contact with more Debian people.
