querying available package versions over the net
In order to fix debget to work with package pools (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=84368) I need to know what versions of a package are available, without relying on apt's cache. (The main point of the program is to fetch versions of a package for distributions which aren't in your sources.list.) I can't simply rely on what's in the package's pool directory, because I need to know at the least which versions are experimental (to avoid them unless specifically requested), and ideally what the current version for each distribution is (so I can fetch based on distribution, instead of just getting the latest or by version). Colin Watson suggested using madison, if there were a public interface to it. There was talk about making a CGI of this available, but I can't find any references to that happening. Another approach is to parse the info from packages.debian.org. This is what reportbug does, using its own code (checkversions.py). Does anybody know of code to do this from Perl, or the shell? If not my current idea is to write a Python wrapper around checkversions.py to use from the shell (after clearing that with Chris Lawrence). Does anybody have any other suggestions? I'll follow debian-devel for responses, but please Cc: me on replies if possible. Thanks. -- Roderick Schertler [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: querying available package versions over the net
On Fri, 11 Mar 2005 13:17:25 +0100, Frank Lichtenheld [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: Perhaps the best solution would be if I would offer a interface to packages.debian.org that is easier parsable than the current one. Yes, that would be great. Especially if the data also told you the source package which a binary package comes from, as that's another problem debget doesn't have a good solution for. Patches and/or proposals in other forms welcome. Could you point me at the source? The closest I could find is a Python script at http://cvs.debian.org/packages/cgi-bin/?cvsroot=webwml but since the actual script is .pl I don't suspect this is correct. -- Roderick Schertler [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. The module provides only PAM auth and session components, so they can't literally change your password. Bug#111309: ITP: xtail -- like tail -f, but works on truncated files, directories, more
Package: wnpp Version: N/A; reported 2001-09-05 Severity: wishlist xtail watches the growth of files. It's like running a tail -f on a bunch of files at once. It notices if a file is trunated and starts from the beginning. You can specify both filenames and directories on the command line. If you specify a directory, it watches all the files in that directory. It will notice when new files are created (and start watching them) or when old files are deleted (and stop watching them). It's available from http://www.unicom.com/sw/xtail/ . The distribution doesn't include copyright terms. I've mailed the author about it. -- Roderick Schertler [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I don't think Andy is taking into account your plan of allowing both threaded and non-threaded Perls present on the system at the same time. It seems to me that the only real problem we've got with the current layout is that the *.pm files for extensions which have XS portions are placed in /usr/lib/perl5 rather than in /usr/lib/perl5/arch/version. If that were changed so that such modules behaved like core modules (placing both *.pm and *.so in the arch/version hierarchy) then only modules with *.so files would need to be reinstalled when a new version is installed. If this were in place previously then the recent 5.005 install would only have broken modules with XS portions, as it should have. Further, if the version part of that didn't necessarily track every new version, but only changed when a new version was binary incompatible, that would save even more recompilation. That is, if 5.006 doesn't break binary compatibility, I'd recommend that you continue to use /usr/lib/perl5/arch/5.005 rather than changing to /usr/lib/perl5/arch/perl5.006. -- Roderick Schertler [EMAIL PROTECTED]

intent to remove libglide from non-free
The Glide library is a mess. It's non-free and no source is available. As distributed by the upstream author you get a library called libglide2x.so, with no embedded soname. I had packaged up an old version of this library. I went to update the package and I found that the situation has gotten much uglier. Now, the upstream author is releasing 6 different versions of the library. There are libc5 and libc6 versions for each of three different kinds of video hardware. All 6 packages provide the same library name (libglide2x.so). Further, none of them has a soname or even versioned links. I'm disgusted by the whole mess. This is what I get for taking on a non-free package. The author is currently distributing in RPM format. I'd like to get the existing libglide2 package dropped from non-free and to point our users at alien and the RPMs distributed upstream. This isn't a great solution, but it's the best I have come up with. Can anybody suggest a better one? -- Roderick Schertler [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If none of them is then it returns NULL. libc6 only checks stdin. dgux (the only other OS I have easy access to) works even if none of those is hooked up to a tty (or if they're hooked up to a different tty), and it still correctly detects if you don't have a utmp slot. (I tested this by using screen to log a tty in and out.) I don't know how it's doing that. The equivalent of lsof shows the process doesn't have any stray fds open on they tty. It calls that code from some scripts which have fd0 dup'd elsewhere, so isatty(0) is false and getlogin() fails. Will someone please fix it? It's really annoying. Is it in the bug sys? The bug is in libc6. getlogin() is supposed to work even if isatty(0) is false. It is bug #17528. -- Roderick Schertler [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
intent to package libglide
Quake 2 uses the glide library to do rendering on 3dfx Voodoo hardware, such as the Monster 3d and Righteous 3d cards, so I'm going to package it. The library is available at http://www.3dfx.com/software/download_glidel.html The package will have to go in non-free. The license on the library is ugly, and the library doesn't even come with source. The distribution comes with 2 shared libraries, a handful of header files and a bunch of example code. The license only allows you to distribute the `object code runtime version of the enclosed software', so I don't think I even have a choice about whether I can distribute anything but the shared libraries. -- Roderick Schertler [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . intent to package quake2, qwcl, qwsv and unixded
I'm going to start working on packages for quake2, qwcl (the Quakeworld client), qwsv (the Quakeworld server) and unixded (the Quake dedicated server). I spoke to Joey Hess, he said he doesn't intend to package any of them. All of these packages will have to go in non-free. What should the package for unixded be called? I'm thinking quake-server. I've got an expect script I use for my Quake servers which reboots them if they become stuck. Would it be appropriate to ship that and use it by default with the server packages? -- Roderick Schertler [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
