Realplayer
So Joey and Manoj are having a `friendly' discussing about the best way to implement an installer package for realplayer, I wondered how the other distributions do it. Now I have not bothered to look because I am to lazy, but my best guess is that RedHat includes a copy of the Realplayer code. They have talked to RealNetworks and sorted this all out, the version of RealPlayer that the current Debian installer uses is the rpm. So maybe we could do the same, ask for permission to include the code in a .deb in non-free on our mirror sites, and on non-free CDs. I know that this would mean that we would be going out of the way to support non-free software, but so is an installer. In September 1999 I sent an e-mail to RealNetworks asking them about this idea. When I got the following response in December 1999 I gave up: Date: Mon, 27 Dec 1999 20:57:06 -0800 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Realplayer for Debian GNU/Linux [#6430953] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Edward, Thanks for contacting RealNetworks Technical Support. Re: realplayer installer and frozen
I checked and REALPLAYER_HOME was set to the G2 directory (from an old manual installation). I changed it to /usr/lib/RealPlayer7 and realplayer started working. Then I deleted REALPLAYER_HOME environmental variable altogether and it still worked. This would indicate that it isn't required, but if it exists, it must point to the correct location. Thanks. I've played around with my system some more. Here's what I tried: 1. Removed libstdc++2.9-glibc2.1 - realplayer kept working 2. Changed REALPLAYER_HOME - realplayer stopped working 3. Corrected REALPLAYER_HOME - realplayer started working again 4. Unset REALPLAYER_HOME - realplayer kept working In short, REALPLAYER_HOME was the sole cause on my system and unsetting it completely seems to be the best fix. - Dave -- +--+---+ | David Webb | The believer is happy; the doubter is wise. | | [EMAIL PROTECTED] | - Hungarian Proverb | +--+---+

I had the same problem. Installing libstdc++2.9-glibc2.1 fixed it on my system. Of course, a preinstallation dialog like "This crap is unsupported by Debian now. If you want it, paste this url on your wget.\nOr you can keep it and play with the funny segfaults." I tried the woody installer on a potato system. It installed realplayer, but it doesn't seem to work. No messages or core dump--nothing happens. I also tried installing the tarball and installing the .deb created by running alien on the .rpm, with the same results, so it would appear that the installer is not the problem. On the other hand, the old realplayer worked just fine for me in potato. Unfortunately there does not appear to be any way to get it back. -- Bob Nielsen, N7XY (RN2)[EMAIL PROTECTED] Tucson, AZ DM42nh QRP-L #1985 SOC #77http://www.primenet.com/~nielsen

realplayer installer and frozen
The realplayer installer package in potato is broken and useless because Real has, in their infinite wisdom, removed version 6.x of the program from their download sites now that they have a beta of 7.0. (Bug #60323.) So the installer can't install anything. The package either needs to be pulled from potato, or the new package in woody that can handle realplayer 7.0 needs to be substituted in its place. The changes to the actual debian package were minor; the changes between real 6.x and 7.0 are anyone's guess and who knows what has broken. So, Dark, what should I do? -- see shy jo
who wants realplayer?
