45 thin clients = slow squeeze

2012-06-04 Thread Ole-Anders Andreassen

Last week our new Squeeze installation was tested.

Server used was a 4x quad core server, 16GB RAM with 4 SAS disks
Gigabit network to all clients
Clients, Acer Veriton G480L with 2 GB ram

45 clients booted as thin clients. Booting takes several minutes.
All users opening firefox, openoffice and a pdf file (okular).

The result was a server load of 60.

Closing the pdf files helped, but the clients was still slow.
On some of the clients OpenOffice was "lagging" when typing.

K-menu used 10-15 secs to respond

Speed - Lenny vs Squeeze

2012-05-25 Thread Ole-Anders Andreassen

Hi!

I have used Squeeze a week now, and there are a lot of things to like.
But what I don't like, is that Squeeze seems to be slower. Booting is
slower, logging in takes longer time, and starting programs also takes
longer time.

I am using the same server hardware on both installations, same network,
same clients...

Anyone with the same experience?

I have to agree with Ole Anders here!

The gnash is 100% useless becouse it dont work on the pages students use daily.

alot better then gnash.

I sure hope neither you nor Ole Anders teach mathematics. Given that
working Youtube is more than 0% useful, and gnash work with youtube,
gnash can not be 100% useless. If working Youtube is 1% useful, gnash
can at most be 99% useless. If you calculate this and reach 100%, I
believe something most be wrong with the calculator.

OK :)

Gnash works with youtube, but is lagging as %¤##!!! The frame rate pr
second must be around 2 :(

Reading newspapers with flash-adds is impossible with gnash. The browser
hangs, and the client becomes slow. I have to kill the gnash-processes
before I can close the browser. When I have to do this, and wait.
Aargh!! Gnash is wasting my time, and at that moment I would rate it
to be more than 100% useless.

I added the printer to NIS Netgroup printer-hosts, this didn't help.

Any suggestions?

put

/etc/init.d/cups restart
/etc/init.d/autofs restart

into /etc/rc.local of the diskless workstation chroot on the LTSP server.

Both services (autofs/CUPS) fail from time to time. It is a race
condition issue between those services and network-manager (which
sometimes is coming up with an IP address too late).

Hi!

Tried this, but it didn't help.
I edited /etc/rc.local using "LANG=C chroot /opt/ltsp/i386/ vim
/etc/rc.local"

No printer on the diskless workstation, but I can print testpage from Cups
and from thin-clients.

Gnash = useless

2012-05-20 Thread Ole-Anders Andreassen

Gnash seems to be 100% useless.

- When it works, it is lagging badly
- Newspapers with flash based adds is not possible to load.
- Iceweasel hangs on most pages using flash until I kill Gnash from the
command line.

Installed flashplugin-nonfree, and now tings work :)

Is this a normal experience ?

OK, I'll try this :)

A better way might be to use su - to get the per user temp directories

But how can I use this proxy on the diskless and thin clints, and for APT?

Re: Linux-PC blocked/filtered in the network.

2011-03-09 Thread Ole-Anders Andreassen
The theories presented by the folks at UMOEikt is that there could be something wrong with
MTU size.

 - I have tested with different MTU size using 'ifconfig eth1 mtu number', but nothing
changes.

Another theory is that NAT is causing problems, and that I would have to change IPs in our
SLX-net.

- If this was the case, I shold be able to access WWW from a laptop running linux at the
town hall. This is not the case. And opposite, a laptop running Windows should not be able
to access WWW from inside our SLX-net, but it can...

When I search for "TCP out of state" + Checkpoint I find this:

SYMPTOMS
TCP traffic is beeing dropped, and SmartView Tracker
shows the errer: "TCP packet out of state"

CAUSE
The Non-TCP, RFC compilant software fails to communicate
properly trough the security gateway.

Then a HowTo for turning of this follows...

I do not understand the part "The Non-TCP, RFC compilant software fails..."

What you describe sound slighly similar to the problem we experienced

Linux-PC blocked/filtered in the network. (Was: Where do I see the DNS settings used i Lenny)

2011-02-21 Thread Ole-Anders Andreassen

Today I have tested the network at several schools,
and at the town hall. It is not possible to surf on
www on any of these networks using a PC running
Linux. My conclusion is that there has to be some kind
of filtering of traffic that exclude PC's running Linux.

From the same PC I can send and receive email,
I can ping and trace (mtr) addresses on www, and
I can view webpages that are on servers on the
inside of the filtering-gateway.

By doing these test I have demonstrated that SLX
is not the problem. I have also demonstrated for
the admins at the town hall that using Linux-PC
on a "clean" network, surfing is no problem.

Tomorrow I'm going to visit the network-admins
at Atea, so that they could see what happens when
a PC running Linux tries to access www.

What kind of things should I test to document, or find
the problems? So far I have just used MTR to document
slow respons, wget --no-proxy to document that
www hangs and ends time out, ifconfig to show NiC
settings, and route...

OleA

PS: UmoeIKT is the same company that refused to
turn on IMAP on the exchange servers, resulting in
3 week without mail at our school. All the other
schools had to upgrade Outlook in order to connect
to the new exchange-server with MS MAPI settings.

mount -t cifs //10.63.150.254/Felles /skole/tjener/home0/I_Felles
-v -o user=olea,pass=Password,gid=teachers,domain=ORKIDENETT

Using ssh to tjener as normal user, I'm able to find the files
inside the share. So it is mounted.

When using thin client it is possible to read the content of the
share, open files to edit, and save new files.

When using diskless workstations the folder is empty.

What can I do to fix this?

Able to mount the share using this:

mount -t cifs //10.63.150.254/Felles /mnt/Felles_I -v -o
user=USERNAME,pass=PASSWORD,domain=ORKIDENETT

On the server I now can view the files. But how do I
mount this share permanently, and how do I make the
folder accessible for teachers?

`man mount.cifs`

`mount -t cifs` does the same as `mount.cifs`.

All you need is the package "smbfs".

I see that it has been added now.

Is there any need for a language selector on the download page and any
other page, when it is available on the front page?

In my opinion it is not.

Several pages outside www.slx.no are linking directly to these pages,
and do not use the front page as entry page. Thats why the language
selector is needed here.

I see that pages like "Take a tour" now have less width because of the
language selection menu.

Checsums added (Thanks Jürgen) to http://www.slx.no/en/downloads, and a

md5sum and sha1sum are used to verify the integrity of files. The
checksum functions as a compact digital fingerprint of a file. It is
extremely unlikely that any two non-identical files existing in the real
world will have the same checksum hash.

In the Wikipedia articles about md5sum and sha2sum you find external
links to utilities that can be used to verify the checksum.

If the workload is spread evenly around , then it will take no time to

- The perfect setup
- Make a video tutorial
- How to do testing (check list?)
- Hardware choices
- HowTo set up an external backup pc
- Update the wishlist at http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Wishlist
- Get started with Moodle in DebainEdu

- Eye candy
- Connect your DebianEdu/skolelinux blog to http://planet.skolelinux.org

To consider the value of documentation, you only need to look at the
projects where it is scant or non-existent. The projects also become
scant and non-existent as people find that setup, install and
operation are beyond the native intuitiveness of the interface and
move onto something more user-friendly - something with documentation.
The value of an application is often measured by it's documentation.
We have a lot of good documentation, and our manual are becoming

Good idea. I'd like to do a session about this at the gathering in
February :-)

- A netbook version of skolelinux

what do you mean with this? An lxde desktop or rather something like moblin?
(see moblin.org)

No, just debian-edu for use on small netbooks, where users homefolder
are mounted at logon. Something that looks like the "things" Klaus has
helped Sturla with.

- WiFi-controller based on wrt-hardware

what do you mean with this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_LAN_Controller
But based on cheap wrt-based equipment.
An easy way to controll several wireless AP at a school,
as a part of skolelinux admin tools.

- An easy way to freez all screens in a classroom. One button

italc and controlaula which are already in Debian can do this. So it "just"
needs to be set up and we need to decide which of the two we are gonna make
the default. (So I take your wish to do that.)

- Exam-mode, where communication, internet and so on, is blocked.

I have checed out Italc now, it sure looks like the tihing I (my
teachers) want.

I seem to recall italc and controlaula can do this too.

- More than 50 static adresses for workstations (why is there a limit)

because a small subnet was choosen. (just explaining, not justifying :)

This seems to be documented now, and I am a much happier man now :)

- Send message to all users, or group of users.

italc again, afaik.

- Print quota
- A way to use the amount of free diskspace on "diskless workstations".
(they are sold with harddisk most of them)
- Digital signage app (info screen) that runs on the server.
- Wii whiteboard, or something similar.

_I_ find those less important, which makes me suggest, thats it would be a
good idea, to prioritize such a wishlist too. Else we end up with 100 wishes
and some are picked up a random, with (as the list gets longer) an increasing
chance to pick unimportant ones :)

I agree. What about some kind of woting for features?

Iceweasel is not 100% as it should be.

I left iceweasel running when I left work yesterday,
when I logged inn this morning, it was hanging.

Sound on diskless workstations works nice.

In nagios I get a warning about apt-update.

A bit strange this warning, nothing to upgrade :)

Hi, virtually: yes of course.

But: I have to add that my changes related to a Sarge Tjener.
I posted my step on the list and was waiting for a final confirmation.

Now I remember, having entered my findings into the Wiki...:

http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Etch/HowTo/NetworkClients?action=diff&rev1=17&rev2=16

Holger was so kind to give it some finishing:
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Etch/HowTo/NetworkClients?action=diff&rev1=19&rev2=17

So, this is what I learned - but it might be easier with Lenny + Lwat.

I think Lenny is a bit different. Lenny is using PowerDNS and lwat.

At the moment, the only reference in the Lenny manual is this:

"FIXME: add a pointer to
DebianEdu/Documentation/Lenny/GettingStarted#DNSManagementwithlwat and
describe it there. "

...and here the only text related to this, is as follow:

"DNS Administration"

Kind regards

I suggest we get the suggestions in the general Wishlist, and sort out the

Wow! Thanks for all the replys :)

It seems like much of the content in my wish list already is
available. This tells me that Skolelinux easily could be improved
a lot, just by adding more documentation and sharing of ideas.

As we all know very well, the fundamental idea behind FOSS is
sharing. I think we have some way to go here regarding
documentation. I know administrators and schools that has left
Skolelinux, and started using edubuntu because the amount of
documentation. Please let us do something to stop this from
happening.

Wishlist for features in Skolelinux

2010-01-24 Thread Ole Anders Andreassen
The last days I have been aware of the fact that there is to little
communication between users (teachers at schools) and delvelopers. So I
thought I should present my wishlist for features in future Skolelinux.

- A netbook version of skolelinux
- WiFi-controller based on wrt-hardware
- An easy way to freez all screens in a classroom. One button
- Exam-mode, where communication, internet and so on, is blocked.
- More than 50 static adresses for workstations (why is there a limit)
- Send message to all users, or group of users.
- Print quota
- A way to use the amount of free diskspace on "diskless workstations".
(they are sold with harddisk most of them)

- Digital signage app (info screen) that runs on the server.
- Wii whiteboard, or something similar.

What is your wishlist, or vision?

It seems we have different ideas how to create a stable
release and when this should be ready, so I stop wasting my time now.

If you think my approach is right, please stop the madness, we can prepare
changes for after the release in a branch and just trunk as before to get
lenny out. (and there is still work to do: documentation has lots of FIXMEs

I think this sounds like a reasonable approach. Documentation is
important as well. If features is not documentet, only a few skilled
users and the developers are sometimes the only one able to use them.

I'd love to work on instead of doing this stupid discussion and reviewing p4
bug-fixes constantly, as each has the risk to indroduce breakage.)
and then (after lenny is out) I'd be happy to work on a pointrelease, to fix
stuff which needs fixing, but as said, first the release, then the
pointrelease.

I would like to se a release as soon as possible, and if it is possible
to add fixes at a later point that shouldn be a problem. Or...?

2. lenny status

2.1 lenny status: #1409: Iceweasel does not save exception rule for
https://www/lwat

according to the ticket, there is still work to do for #1409
I suspect it is working now, but an error is logged during
installation anyway. The error is from snakeoil-on-ice executed within
ltsp-make-client, and it fail because http://www is unavailable. I
suspect the check in snakeoil-on-ice simply is checking things in the
wrong order or something.

2.2 status lenny: 1408: Diskless Workstation not working yet

http://bugs.skolelinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1408

Bug #1408 seem to be the dumping ground for everything diskless related.
The original problem was ldap connection related. But dvd installs
should now be working.

Diskless workstations when using netinstall on real hard ware has meen
working the last 3 weeks. There are strong indications that this bug is
only related to install on vbox.

debalance will check if #1408 is still there tomorrow

2.3 status lenny: 1138: We need to check and act on the non-free
packages on the DVD

h01ger said he was going to look at this (pere, 19:21:05)
I created a wiki page to keep information on what we figured out for
each non-free package. (pere, 19:21:34)

LINK: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/NonFreePackages

2.4 status lenny: 1415: Cannot unlock KDE lock session

http://bugs.skolelinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1415

needs investigation, afaics
There was a bug (#534714) about missing /etc/pam.d/kde in Debian which
caused the same behaviour.
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=534714

The scenario of log-in working, but unlocking a session not, is when
/etc/pam.d/kdm is there, but /etc/pam.d/kde is not

21:21 < klausade> aah. must test screenlock that doesn't work.

2.5 status lenny: 1412: Errors when building the LTSP chroot are not
reported to the user

http://bugs.skolelinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1412

ltsp-build-client failed to return an error, and thus the udeb failed to
pass the error on.

doesn't detect ltsp-build-client failures "every time"
the bug being that it doesn't detect ltsp-build-client failures
Concludes #1412 still needs some work

3. alpha3

Lets copy an image tonite, test it, and call it alpha3 tomorrow?

* h01ger will try to find a good moment to make an alpha3

4. rc1

If alpha3 looks promising, i'd like to see rc1 RSN. Where looks
promising = not absolutly unreleasable.

5. any other business

5.1 any other business: should we modify lwat to allow editing passwords
per default

No agreement how we should deal with lwat + changing passwords. Needs
more discussion, probably on the list.

update the wiki about extending the range of statics?
OleA, considering that the documentation for etch was
(almost: a lot) worse, i dont think the documentation is a blocker per
se. rather the opposite

5.2 AOB: should we test stable-proposed-updates by default in the CD image?

6. next meeting

AGREED: next meeting, next monday, 19 utc (h01ger, 19:59:08)
Meeting ended at 19:59:48 UTC.

2010-01-10 Thread Ole-Anders Andreassen

Just finished a successfull install using netinstall cd dated 10. jan
No errors repported after install finihed.

Booting diskless workstation is now slow again.
The pxe-menu sows after a few seconds.

When choosing LTSP diskless workstation, the boot starts normal, but a
few seconds after the bootsplash/progress bar starts, the image freezes
for 1 min 30 sec. No entries in syslog during this time.

Then the screen is going black for a few seconds, an switching to
text-mode. The first message shown, is:

"acer-wmi: No or unsupported WMI interface bla bla bla bla..."

This message show for only a second or so, before textscroll starts, and

Documentation for extending range of statics i Lenny needed

2009-12-18 Thread Ole-Anders Andreassen

Hi!

HowTo extend the number of statics are not documented in Lenny.
As default there are only reserved 50 static adresses, many
schools need more than this.

Since Etch is using Bind, the hints given in this manual does not
seem to be help full i Lenny.

Some hits form #debian-edu:

- edit ldap with phpldapadmin

Problem: not able to log in using
cn=admin,ou=People,dc=skole,dc=skolelinux,dc=no

as username, and root password.

I.m getting this error:

error: Coukd not start TLS. Please check your LDAP server

Using 'ldapvi --discover' gives an editor showing the content of
LDAP.

I've made a "placeholder" in the wiki for documentation about
this. Please help out.

sure, there are many many things that _could_ be done. there are less things
that could be done and are sensible to do. In this case, this relation is
inherited from the way bind9 has to be configured, and as such this should,
if at all, be changed in bind upstream. working around with providing scripts
is likely to break, whenever bind9 changes.

Thank you, if you confirm this, we can put this into wiki (and possibly
even into svn).

I dont think we (the Debian Edu _developers_) should spend any time on etch
anymore (security support will be terminated in 3 months at max, rather
earlier). In lenny we switched to powerdns instead of bind, thus this is
beating a dead horse.

So all our work atm should be directed at releasing lenny asap and providing
good documenation for it.

How do I extend the range of statics in Lenny then ;)

cheers,

It could be your hard disk is too small for the partitioner to apply the
recipe?
Then it will leave it for you to solve and what's more it wouldn't even
present you with these prefabricated options.
That way or another you didn't get the automated partitioning going for you
and you're likely to end up with /boot on LVM which GRUB can't handle.

If your hard disk is larger than 14GB please file a bug report, as
partitioning was sorted out sometime ago and should be working fine, it
should be easy to spot any recent commits that bugged it down.

If your hard disk is about 14GB it is just about big enough and evidently
using one partition for all will get you through, than unless you intend to
add more disks later there's no point really to use LVM and that saves you
the need to create another partition for /boot.
Just choose one of the non LVM options.
Of course such system will not be very useful therefore I gather you're only
doing it to test the installation, so lots of thanks for that.

Courage, Odd.

I have tested on 3 different servers, and all of them ended with GRUB

Test install of main server

2009-11-19 Thread Ole Anders Andreassen
The last days I 've done several test-installs of main-server that has
ended with GRUB error. This evening I did test installs in virtualbox,
and I recognized a difference in the install procedure. When installing
on real hardware I got 3 or 4 choices on how to do the automatic
partitioning. Here I have choosed automatic with LVM. When installing
in virtualbox, I don't get this choice, only the automatic partitioning
"bullet".

The install on real hardware ends in GRUB error

The vbox install reboots, the DebianEdu screen shows up and hangs for a
while before changing into a cli with the following text:

Booting the kernel.
Loading please wait...
7 logical volume(s) in the volume group "vg-system" now active
7 logical volume(s) in the volume group "vg-system" now active

kinit: trying to resume from /dev/mapper/VG_SYSTEM_SWAP_1
kinit: No resume image, doing normal boot

After this I get info about error during install:

  error: Resize of /dev/vg_system_root failed.

Another thing that maybe is worth mentioning, is that I have to delete
LVM groups everytime I'm doing a new test install on real hardware.
After I have deleted LVM, I have to reboot and start the install form
the beginning.

This seem to be the remaining bug, not quite sure what the issue is.
Some claim the issue is DNS resolver related, and changing etc/hosts
and/or etc/resolv.conf solve it. I am not yet sure what the problem
is nor how to fix it.

Should I post logs from the boot session, and if so, what logs should I
post?

Anything else I can do during testing?

Net-install (rsync 15.nov) installed with no install erroers

2009-11-18 Thread Ole-Anders Andreassen
Installation with the net-install CD worked perfectly. No install errors
reported after det install,

Added MAC-adr in lwat, and tried to boot a LTSP-diskless-workstation.
The workstation booted in a new an unfamiliar way, the "installer boot
menu"

Where can I find information about this, or can someone on the list give
a brief description og the functionality?

When choosing "LTSP diskless workstation", the boot-image hangs after a
few seconds. Pressing alt-arrow to get to the next screen , and after a
while the boot stops at "*Starting NFS common utillities"

Installed almost successfully on a HP Proliant 380.

After making of Chroot the install seemed to hang, so I pressed Ctrl-C.
I'm not sure if this was the reason why the install continued, and
finished. Maybe I was to impatient, and just should have waited.

After install there was a warning about errors during the install.

"error: no such partition, error: no such partition, error: no such

I've pasted the errors from the install log, and the .partition info

During or after? Did it help to use ^c to get the installer going

The install hanged during the making of chroot, ^c didn't help. The

PCI: BIOS Bug: MCFG area at e000 is not E820-reserved
PCI: Not using MMCONFIG
Loading, please wait...
IP-Config: eth0 hardware adress 00:23:54:C1:F3:C7 mtu 1500 DHCP RARP

Bifrost "follow me" printing

2008-01-26 Thread Ole Anders Andreassen
This may be of interest for larger Skolelinux schools.

http://bifrost.projects.linpro.no/

Follow-me printing
This is a project funded by Møre og Romsdal fylkeskommune (a county
council on the west coast of Norway) to develop a "follow me" printing
server for their Videregående schools (roughly equivalent to high
school) with the following basic requirements:

  * Support Windows (XP and up), OS X, Linux
  * Use OpenLDAP (already in place with user objects for all users)
  * No domain login required
  * GPL Licensed
  * No need for N print drivers to support N different printers
  * Easy install on end-user stations

The "follow me" part is specified as follows:

 1. Student submits a print job to a print server (CUPS) to a
generic print queue (will be named "followme"). These jobs are
held and not printed.
 2. Student walks up to a convenient printer and swipes a magnetic
card
 3. All the student's print jobs are sent to that printer

Skolelinux wins the Scandinavian Free Software award

2007-12-09 Thread Ole Anders Andreassen
http://www.fscons.org/award

Skolelinux wins the Scandinavian Free Software award
Free Software Foundation Europe is proud to announce that the Norwegian
project Skolelinux is the winner of the first Free Softwar Scandinavian
Award handed out at during the Free Software Conference Scandinavia 2007
in Göteborg friday 2007-12-07.

Skolelinux has under a long period of time worked hard to promote the
use of Free Software as well as the use of free and open standards and
file formats. By using low cost or spare hardware, schools and other
public institutions can find a free and cheap IT solution made to meet
their needs.

Skolelinux captures a big part of the free software spirit; sharing and
reusing. By focusing on schools, Skolelinux makes sure students,
tomorrow's computer users, and decision makers, can grow up in a spirit
of sharing, reusing and learning from family, friends and neighbours.
