fore runner

2001-11-20 Thread Carlos Barros
Hello!

Does anyone know the ForeRunner ES-3810 switch?

I have a null modem cable(using only 3 cables) that I can use to
connect to the console of a 3com switch but fore-runners. (using minicom)
Is there something that i can play with?

Things that I checked are:
- 9600 8N1
- powered down and up and no message appears
- does nothing.

Sorry for the off topic, but couldnt find any help elsewere.

Could you make them recognize more that 4 MAC per port ?

Is there an easy(nice and gui) SNMP client (in debian)?

Debian firewall/router distro?

2001-11-20 Thread Jesse Goerz
I'm a newbie administrator at a small publishing company. I
have been consistently trying to get my boss to migrate a
yellowdog linux server to debian-ppc. After a recent 3 hour
outage (ouch) my boss couldn't do anything to get the machine up
(I'm a part time worker, not on call). Anyway, he wanted to buy
a Cobalt but I recommended we install a smoothwall machine
instead. I'm confident I can get the smoothwall machine up and
running but what I really want is a debian based distro for easy
upgrades and maintenance. Whatever I install I have to be able
to convince him that he can semi-administer it if I'm not there.

Is there a debian-firewall/router distro similar in function to
smoothwall?

All the server needs to do is act as a firewall/router for the
internal lan and the webserver. It won't be offering any other
services.

TIA,
Jesse

The mysql.log files listed php-nuke trying to do stuff even when it wasn't

php-nuke has a big security hole in it.. you can read up more on it on:

Your server sounds compromised, I'd look deep into files or better take

Firstly I suggest reading and/or subscribing to the Portslave mailing list.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
http://www.linuxrouter.org/mailman/listinfo/portslave

Cyclades people are on the list (but they keep a very low profile).
Portslave is used on much Cyclades hardware including in the dedicated
hardware boxes they sell. There's many people there who can discuss the
down-stream use of Cyclades products (E1 == 30 analog modems), and some
people who can discuss the upstream use (E1 == 2Mb of net access).

That is what you expect. Sending a few megabits of data around isn't that
difficult really.

Yes, Sangoma and Cyclades are among the good companies that release the
source to all their drivers making it easier for us.

I installed an Emerging Technologies card for one of my clients (binary-only
kernel module) and have really regretted it. I wish the client had enough
budget to allow them to throw away that ET junk and get a Sangoma.

Why do you expect a CD-ROM to be more reliable than a hard drive?

Why not just use software RAID on two hard drives?

Or if you want to be really advanced get a flash disk...

By PC pricing standards Cyclades products are expensive. They have a smaller
market and they are server products.

Compare them to Cisco products etc and they seem quite cheap!

There's lots of other issues when comparing a Cisco to a machine with a
Cyclades card. With a PC router you could easily put a web server to show
stats on the router (instead of monitoring it by SNMP and doing the stats
elsewhere). With a PC you can easily expand it etc. With a PC a buffer
overflow doesn't necessarily mean the entire machine is dead (unlike Cisco
products).

Also PCs have lots of spare CPU power which is REALLY useful for running
tcpdump type programs.

We are currently working to get it running off of a CD-ROM so that we
can eliminate the hard drive as a possible point of failure. Linux
routers are so cheap to build, you can incorporate a couple into your
network design (assuming you are running BGP or the like) and one can
fail, or be taken one out of service for maintenance, and not affect
your connectivity.
