You are truly wonderful..! - I now have KDE using antialiased fixed-width

2001-03-02 Thread James Duberg
OK folks, what am I missing here? (Plenty, I'm sure)
I've just installed 2.2r2. My first experience with Debian.
I've done apt-get dist-upgrade. I'm using the default stable sites in
sources.list.

I want to install KDE 2.1. It's not found on the default stable sites.
When I put a different recommended site, ftp://kde.tdyc.com/debian, into
the sources.list, and run apt-get update, then apt-get install kdebase
task-kfe, I get a long list of unmet dependencies.

I would sure like to get KDE 2.1 on my system, but (as you can probably
tell) am not capable of compiling it or anything like that.

Any help would be appreciated. Just tell me what to read.

why? it was just in the kde2 section...it just happens to be one of the

Kconsole

2001-03-02 Thread Rick Van Ruth
Hi,

After the later update to KDE2.1 in Debian unstable it appears in the
"Settings" for Kconsole that the "Keyboard" settings for 'xterm (xfree 3x)'
and 'xterm (xfree 4x)' have not only swapped places but they both now do the
same thing which is the xfree 4x style of keyboard.

Anyway to get the old keyboard back?

Re: Konsole & AA fonts

2001-03-02 Thread tnvander
I removed that monotype.ttf font from my configuration, and the Fonts
controlpanel still displays nice fixed courier fonts now in the fixed font
setting.

So I do believe that the config file I posted in my previous e-mail works.

If anyone can pass me a .deb of an AA-enabled konsole, I'd be more than happy
to try it out!

Konq with authenticating proxies

2001-03-02 Thread David Bishop
Up until yesterday, I was using konqueror here at work, and it was wonderful.
Then, after apt-get'ing yesterday's updates, everytime I try and surf the
web through the authenticating proxy here at work, it returns this error
(when it would normally be popping up the username/pass box):
Unsupported action
Unknown authorization method.

And won't go anywhere. Nothing else changed, I didn't mess around with the
proxy settings, though I have gone back and made sure that they are correct.
I was hoping that would be fixed in todays update, but it wasn't :-( Anyone
have any idea what's going on? I had a few short days of bliss, but am now
back to mozilla and hating almost every minute of it.

Vital stats:

latest sid, everything to do with kde installed (within reason, no games),
i386.

Well it was totally unuseable for me until I tweaked the XftConfig file. I also
installed an extra font, monotype.ttf. I'm not sure if my XftConfig will make
things work now without that font; since I don't have an AA-enabled konsole
anymore I can't experiment with it :-)

The problem is not specifically with konsole though, the Font settings panel in
the kontrol center has the same problem with it's fixed-width font as konsole.
So I think it's something in the way in which KDE or QT ask for their fixed
width fonts that make them not see all those Couriers and others.

Anyways, this is my XftConfig file, cobbled together from bits, not that I
really understand what it exactly means :-) I'm curious if any of those
settings will cure the problems with konsole without having the monotype.ttf
font present. But to try it, I'd have to interrupt this e-mail and log out

Konq and mozilla plugins

2001-03-02 Thread Nick
Konq by default doesn't look in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins which is where
you'll have plugins if you've installed Debian Mozilla M18 (and probably
other versions).

It does look at "$MOZILLA_HOME/plugins" by default, but whatever that was set
to, it wasn't the above directory.

Hmm... even after adding the directory, and scanning for the Macromedia
flash plugins, they still don't seem to work (www.flash.com) in Konq, and
I do have plugins enabled globally.

The same plugins work fine with Mozilla M18...

This is a problem with the potato packages that was acknowledged before:

enbeo[~](6) : dpkg -S kmenuedit.so
kdebase-dev: /usr/lib/kmenuedit.so

So
apt-get install kdebase-dev
will solve this for now, if you don't mind the download + disk
space; otherwise get kmenuedit.so manually.

KDE menu editor?

2001-03-02 Thread Nick
I've recently gone from potato KDE 2.something beta to unstable+KDE 2.1-final
and I can no longer use the "Menu Editor..." tool. I thought this might be
some permissions problem because I'm now running KDE as a normal user instead
of root, but I have the same problem running as root:

clicking on Menu Editor... closes the menu and doesn't seem to load anything.
Is there a log file somewhere I should be looking for errors?

Also, installing some new packages like Xcdroast and XMMS have been
automatically added to the Debian Applications-> submenus, but not the main
KDE menu such as "Multimedia".

My only oddity using konsole is an error message saying "7x13 font not
found" when starting konsole, but clicking on OK goes ahead and runs konsole
with no problems. In checking the font directories and their associated dir
and alias files, it appears the 7x13 is there. So far this is the only font
related issue I've found since upgrading. I'm running potato, all stable,
still with xfree86 3.3.6

Fwiw, I have a fair selection of fixed-width fonts, both type1 and truetype,
all of which antialiased KDE can see, but konsole refuses to use any of them.
When you recently disabled AA in konsole was the first time this week that
konsole has been usable for me (without having to first run an xterm and set
QT_XFT=0).

Ben.

Wow, really great! I was waiting only for this to upgrade to
woody (I have been using some bits and pieces of woody here
like libc6, but the core of the system is still potato).

Like all people here, I can only say "Great work, Ivan!". I
really appreciate it.

speaking of this... If anyone is willing to take on the task of rebuilding
all the potato i386 packages that need rebuilt I'd appreciate it. I'm a bit

I did that because upstream stated that it did not handle AA properly. But
since either way it's not handled properly I'll take that patch out and
re-enable it.

Konsole & AA fonts

2001-03-02 Thread tnvander
Hello,

I noticed that AA fonts have been disabled in the latest uploads of KDE2.1, for
reason that Konsole has problems with them.

In my experience, Konsole doesn't have any problems with AA fonts, it just has
a problem with non-fixed width fonts.

And with AA fonts enabled, Konsole gets a problem when the X Server can't find
any fixed-width fonts for Konsole on it's request. AT that point, the X server
maps the requested font to some proportional font, and that messes up Konsole.
When Xft is properly configured, this shouldn't happen and Konsole looks just
beautiful.

The problem is that I am not quite sure on the details of how Xft really works
and how it's font-mappings actually work. I also don't know what kind of font
Konsole requests that it doesn't even get a simple Courier from the X server.

I tweaked XftConfig and added a monotype-font from Keith Packard's website
(www.keithp.com/~keithp) but I don't know how free that font is.

After the tweaks, Konsole works well with AA fonts. For small font-sizes, it
even get a Courier font.

I have a lot of fonts installed which do not come with Debian, like windows TT
fonts and several Cyrillic fonts. So I can't really say what tweaks to
XftConfig are really nessecary to make Konsole happy when using the fonts
available with stock Debian.

Does anyone have any sort of useful documentation on Xft and the XftConfig
file? I haven't yet come across any!

With regards,

Looks like you found a bug. I'm running sid with qt-2.3.0-beta1, so this could
