You have to load the freetype module and add your
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType directory in your FontPath. All these things
should be made in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file...

AA fonts and all

2001-03-23 Thread Ivan E. Moore II
Ok...so I keep testing AA once in a while to see what's going onthe
extent of this usually is

  export QT_XFT=1
  konsole

if it dies I know it does not work. Well, I did a strace of konsole this
last time and noticed it did die directly after it loaded the font...
a font out of /usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1...so I took that fontdir out of my
XftConfig file and wala..it works...

the files under that dir were provided by gsfonts-x11...which unfortunatly
is required by the java packages from blackdown...so I just rm'd them
manually...

My question is...is this a solution for other's still having AA crashes?

And the other question is...can someone tell me what's wrong. Is it as simple
as a buggy font, can it be solved by the gsfonts-x11 maintainer, or do I need
a conflict?

Help: UNIX Man pages in KDE Help

2001-03-23 Thread Toan Nguyen
Hello,

How do I generate search index (in KDE help) for UNIX man pages. I have
unstable debian, with htdig installed. When I press the button update
index in KDE help, the scope section has man pages and info pages
grayed out. I don't know if this functionality is implemented or not but
the Generate index seems doesn't search for man pages.

Can somebody help ?

Also, I get a daily error from cron deamon:

/etc/cron.daily/htdig:
PDF::parse: cannot find pdf parser /usr/local/bin/acroread

What's wrong ?

Thanks,
Toan

At a loss with kppp

2001-03-23 Thread Victor
After having used kde 2.01 on a redhat box for a year or so, I've installed
the latest release of kde 2.1 stable for debian potato on my new PC and go on
using kmail as my favourite mail reader.
Unfortunately, kppp doesn't run correctly both as a user and as root. After
dialing the phone number, it connects giving info about the connection but
immediately stop declaring pppd died unexpectedly - exit status 1 (I had a
look at man pppd but this is an extremely generic error) . Neither is
/var/log/messages more helpful: it says : terminating on signal 15.
I had a go at chmod u+s /usr/bin/kppp and at giving all the users the same
dip group. No success.
Could you please help me with it?

problem with qt

2001-03-23 Thread Iwan Mouwen
Hello,

I've always compiled qt and kde myself until I started using Debian and
Ivan's kde packages. Trying to enable AA on my potato box, I again compiled qt.
I used this
configure command:

./configure -release -sm -gif -system-zlib -system-libmng -system-jpeg
-no-opengl -xft

The compilation succeeds, but starting kde applications results in this
error message:

error while loading shared libraries:
/usr/local/lib/qt-2.3.0/lib/libqt.so.2: undefined symbol:
XRenderFindVisualFormat

I apologize if this is offtopic, but I hope someone knows how to solve
this.

Thanks,
Iwan.

lisa and lan browsing

2001-03-23 Thread Tim Kelley
Has anyone gotten this to work? Am I wasting my time?

I've put in all the correct setting for my network, as root, and even as root
konqueror still tells me lisa is unconfigured. I've checked my lisarc,
kio_lanrc, kio_rlanrc and reslisarc and they have the settings I put in there.

Now I get could not connect to host localhost when I do lan://localhost

In kio_lanrc there is start server=true

what is lan:// anyway? There doesn't seem to be any docs for lisa (well
nothing in /usr/doc/lisa and google doesn't tell me much ...

works here, although the kcontrol setup didn't. I made up my own
config file with
the comments from the README.

I've put in all the correct setting for my network, as root, and even as root
konqueror still tells me lisa is unconfigured. I've checked my lisarc,
kio_lanrc, kio_rlanrc and reslisarc and they have the settings I put in there.

try starting lisa manually from the command line and see what it
says.
with lisa -c /etc/lisarc it should really work if lisarc exists (I
have attached
mine here, although you can't use it without modification obviously)

Then, when it's running, try typing lan:/ and konqueror should show
your network
neighbourhood.

Now I get could not connect to host localhost when I do lan://localhost

I have a very similar problem. I can connect to some machines of my ISP but
not to all of them. With those that fail, both kppp and pon dial and
negotiate with the ISP server but when my machine sends my password the ISP
server does not authenticate myself. It just does not acknowledge, and pppd
waits and waits. If kppp is running it is killed after 1 minute with signal
15. This happens using PAP and CHAP.

Now, I do not think this is kppp problem, since I have a second free ISP
with which I can connect, and some non-local machines of my main ISP DO work
with both kppp and pon. I would say that the ISP servers have had some kind
of update which makes impossible to fullfill the negotiation with a linux
machine. IMHO this may be an issue for pppd.

I have a friend in Telefonica (the main spanish phone company) and he says
they use 2 kind of machines for servers: 3COM and Lucent. He suspects this
comes from 3COM machines. He has also told me they have found some kind of
incompatibilty between CHAP for Windows and Linux. A Linux server with CHAP
does not understand CHAP from new Windows machines.

 Pablo de Vicente.

Try to use 'pon' and 'poff', to check if the problem comes from kppp or
pppd. pon connects you to your ISP and poff disconnects you from your
provider. 'pppconfig' will help you to configure your PPP ISP connection. You
may have a look at /var/log/ppp.log for debugging purposes. All those
programs come from package ppp.

Yes, but at my machine not only Type1 fonts but also some TrueType fonts were
the problem. After manually removing some of them, AA works.
The Type1 fonts I had to remove were b018012l.pfb and n021004l.pfb.

I guess I should have been more specific. The page pointed to by the above

I just confirmed the same behaviour on powerpc.
