kdm bug
Anyone else notice this? Text doesn't appear in the kdm fields when you type just after your computer boots up, but only after restart X server is choosen. Is this just an Nvidia issue? -- Stephen

KOffice/etc and potato
Hi. FWIW, I'm writing a python script to run through debian/ and automate many of the changes required to turn a woody/sid package into a potato package. This script is specifically geared towards KDE apps. I'm hoping that this will make the creation of up-to-date packages easier, what with the increasing set of incompatibilities. Anyway, the current plan is to automate the following changes. If anyone has something else to add to this list, please let me know. (All changes will be confirmed before they are made). - Change version from upstream-n to upstream-0.potaton - Search for and fix dependencies on upstream-n where n = 1; this is in debian/control and debian/*.shlibs - Downgrade DH_COMPAT from 3 to 2 and fix the debhelper version in Build-Depends - Search debian/rules for dh_installman calls and replace them with a set of commands that do the same thing (including reading *.manpages) - Add ldconfig calls to postinst and postrm scripts that are currently being added by dh_makeshlibs Ben.

Here there is no possibility to set the font anywhere in kwrite... It's hidden indeed, huh? It is, to that extent, that it does not even exist... Unless you remembered kedit, but that is not the advanced editor. And BTW, if you change the font in kedit, that does not effect konqueror viewer. Michael Sullivan solved the problem, it was the fixed width font in KCC (see the thread above). Thank you very much anyway. Yes you can change the fonts you have to go to settings-configure highlighting-normal if you're talking about plain text. I did notice a problem that sometimes the effects don't take effect in konqueror's embedded text till after you close kwrite
Konsole showing apps in the titlebar
Hi All, I would like to have konsole to show the name of the apps running in the titlebar. E.g if I start mutt in konsole, when I minimize konsole, it would be nice (and logical) to see mutt, not konsole or /bin/bash - kosole... Is there a way to fix this? Thanks in advance. -- Viktor

KDE Potato BTS?
Bugs in the Woody packages can ofcourse be posted to Debian's BTS, but where can i look up known bugs for the potato packages? Egon

I have installed KDE2 from http://kde.tdyc.com stable kde2 successfully and it starts, but there is only one xterm window on the desktop. No panel, no taskbar as I'm used to with other distros. What is working for me too (as already mentioned on this list): start kwrite, settings-Configure Editor-Fonts-Size. Then you have to close kwrite again (the config files are now being written) When you open a text file in Konqy again it *should* show the fonts correctly. At least it does here. CU Andi
dcopserver broke my computer
I've been using Gnome with varying degrees of frustration since RedHat 5.2, and decided, especially after hearing Kurt Granroth's spiel at CLUE, to try KDE. I'm running Debian, and am loath to use unstable packages, but I went to the site http://kde.debian.net/ and read what I could. - Insert line deb http://kde.tdyc.com potato main crypto into /etc/apt/sources.list. - Start dselect and see the ff. Hit http://kde.tdyc.com potato/main Packages Hit http://kde.tdyc.com potato/main Release Hit http://kde.tdyc.com potato/crypto Packages Hit http://kde.tdyc.com potato/crypto Release Figure out that I am supposed to install the kdm package. I see that it conflicts with gdm, which is bad since I have gdm somewhat configured, but is good since some gdm features don't work, anyway. Also, I cannot install task-anti-aliasing, since it depends on xlibs, which is not available. Apparently it is in unstable, which I don't want to mess with. - Install and reboot. A nice KDE login screen comes up. However, I am unable to login: I get an error message Could not read network connection list /home/glenn/.DCOPserver...:0 Is the dcopserver program running? or somesuch. - But I can login as root! I can choose either KDE on Gnome and they both seem to work fine. I figure it must be a simple configuration problem, file permissions, perhaps. I trot off to the Debian mailing list archives and lo, three messages describe my exact problem, e.g. http://lists.debian.org/debian-kde-0011/msg00213.html This open software process is great, I'm thinking, but: three messages and not one with a reply. Summary: KDE looks pretty good if you are (always) root. Glenn Murray http://www.mines.edu/~gmurray/public_html/Welcome.html
Re: TO ALL: Long application startup time
I've been dealing with this problem for about a month (maybe shorter/longer... I've a bad memory for dates). It has gotten to the point that my NFS-mounted home directories cannot be used with KDE, because Konqueror locks up other critical kde apps, like kmail. Is there any way to configure kde or konq and friends to use /tmp or some alternate directory for temporary lock files? I haven't booted into kde for longer than 30 minutes because I can't even get my e-mail through kmail for about 10 minutes after the desktop has loaded. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. It seems I'm not alone here, which is a good feeling. So I'll share my discoveries. ;) After I found out that on a K5-133 (i.e. 486!) with 80MB RAM we use as a web station (and print server) KDE starts in 30 seconds, but Konqueror is up in 3 seconds (!), I became angry and looked more closely at my configuration. It seems that KDE keeps deleting and recreating a really large amount of files in the .kde/ directory. For example in .kde/share/config, I found over 400 (!) .nfs* style orphaned NFS files (i.e. files that were deleted by a NFS client but couldn't be physically deleted by the NFS server yet because of locking problems). Additionally, I found about 200 files that seemed to be backups of some config files. Then, I found a 13 MB kio_http cache although I run a local proxy and have caching turned OFF in Konqueror. Last, I found the old bookmarks files, and it seems that Konqueror is still reading those, because after I deleted THOSE and restarted KDE, Konqueror was _much_ quicker to come up than before. So, to summarize: - KDE creates LOTS of .nfs* orphans when $HOME = NFS - KDE doesn't delete old bookmarks and (probably) still reads them - KDE doesn't keep track of old config files that are no longer active and on ext2 and especially NFS file systems it makes a difference whether you have 100 or 1000 files in one directory. Nevertheless, I think there is still room for optimization in Konqueror itself. Some other browsers use half the CPU and still take half the time to render complex HTML tables (e.g. Opera). Does anybody of the 2.2alpha users feel that Konqueror's rendering engine has sped up noticeably? Intergrating KDE with BlackBox Window Manager
Hi, I'm running Debian Patato with kernel 2.4.3 and the blackbox window manager. I've recently installed KDE 2.1.1 and would like to know how I can manipulate startkde so that it chooses blackbox as the default window manager? I have found an outdated HOW-TO over at: http://www.draknor.net/kbb/howto/index.html It explains how you can edit .xinitrc to start KDE with the BlackBox window manager. I have tried this using their technique but have had nothing but problems. I think its because their how-to is based on the beta version of KDE 2. Is it be possible to change .xinitrc to use startkde with a few options that would specify BlackBox as the main window manager? Thanks Stef

windowmangaer selection sound problem
I am running debian-sparc-testing and have window maker installed as well as kde. Prior to installing KDE I had WM running quite nicely with the sound working via esd, the enlightenment sound deamon. After installing KDE-potato I can't seem to get at WM anymore and the sound no longer works. The kdm login screen just lists KDE, default, and failsafe as my session options. If I try to start esd from a shell via su, I get: /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get WM back without uninstalling KDE? And how about the sound, any takers? Thanks in advance Tom Korte
Re: TO ALL: Long application startup time
Hi, How about not using kde and just using something lite like blackbox or fvwm and *then* fire up kmail there? I know kmail had/has issues with attachments etc from any other app then kde, but I'm sure these issues will be addressed sooner or later. kde here starts fairly pain free. I kill kdm as soon as it starts (it's annoying) and log in as normal at my first console, then start another app in console 5 and log into console 11 (which starts x on 12). Start up is about 10-20 seconds after latest release for potato. I keep it simple, and have a root part and swap part on hda. fwiw. tatah On Monday 30 April 2001 12:30, Robert Guthrie wrote: I've been dealing with this problem for about a month (maybe shorter/longer...
