ALL the work (bug fixes etc.) are being done for kde3 which is not all that different as you have noticed, but for those of us that have standardized our desktops on kde and like bug free performance it (unfortunately) means we have to track the kde releases as the kde developers determine. This is not an attack on the kde developers who are doing, imho, amazing work, as are the Debian developers. -- Greg C. Problems when stating KDE3
Hallo I've compiled KDE3 on my computer and installed it to "/usr/local/kde". I've added /usr/local/kde/bin to my PATH and wanted to start KDE3 with startkde. But it didn't start, the screen just changes from the grey-white grid to black and back again. Re: KDE 3 unoffical packages
To be quite honest I was a brave soul and removed 2.2.2 first (apt-get remove kdelibs3). I figured I can always reinstall it if something goes wrong. When installing the new KDE3 packages, I had to remove a few more packages to satisfy some dependencies (nothing that I really needed). I did not take offense on sending your reply to me directly, I'm very new to mailing lists myself. I'm running a website at http://www.linuxjunior.org if you need some Linux-related support. > How did you get it so that dpkg did not remove 2.2.2 (or whatever) packages? > (for example it replaced kdebase instead of installing along side of it.) > I thought this was possible as one is in /usr and the other in /opt. > I tried --force-conflicts but this obviously the wrong ticket. > Also tried putting a hold on kdebase but a no go as well. > I am fairly new to Debian, and usually use apt, so apologizes if these attempts seem lame to you. > all the best, > Robert_L > Apologies to Cloverm for mistakenly mailing the first copy to his address. > I'm not used to lists yet and have a habit from years of newsgroups to just hit "reply". Using grep-available from the grep-dctrl package, "grep-available -FDepends kdelibs3 -nsPackage" does what you want here. This will only work, I believe, if you're using dselect to keep your available file up to date (i.e., either using dselect itself or doing "dselect update" rather than "apt-get update" to get new Packages files). I did, however, have to do a little fiddling - most of my complications were derived from conflicts in my PATH, and were resolved by making sure that everything in /opt/kde3/ got priority. Also took me a minute to figure that I had to ./configure mosfet-liquid with --prefix=/opt/kde3. Looks good and speedy! I thought this was possible as one is in /usr and the other in /opt. I tried --force-conflicts but this obviously the wrong ticket. Also tried putting a hold on kdebase but a no go as well.
