Re: Fonts are a big concern for Debian, IMHO
Try some. The problem is that they usually look good only in large sizes with antialias. Good scalability is not very common in freeware fonts. And they often contain only a very limited set of characters. In my opinion, apart from quality issues, making sure the font(s) are freely modifiable (i.e. free, not just gratis) would be important, too. Several people sent me links to web pages with free fonts as a response to this. My point was not that there are no free fonts around, but that their quality is usually not sufficient for a basic GUI font. So here's the challenge restated. Find free fonts that: + is compact and suitable for a GUI (say, menus and a file browser) + looks good and is easy to read + in sizes 7-12 without antialiasing + in sizes 5- with antialiasing + has both upper and lower case characters + has scandinavian and french characters, euro sign, mathematical characters etc. (+ is really free and you can even distribute modified versions) Good examples, except that they are not free, are Windows fonts Microsoft Sans Serif, Courier New and Times New Roman. The free Verdana is unfortunately too wide for GUI use, IMO. - Jarno

Oh, forgot two important points.. Find free fonts that: + is compact and suitable for a GUI (say, menus and a file browser) + looks good and is easy to read + in sizes 7-12 without antialiasing + in sizes 5- with antialiasing + has bold and italics + has both upper and lower case characters + has scandinavian and french characters, euro sign, mathematical characters etc. + supports several character encodings (ascii, iso8859-1, iso8859-15, etc) (+ is really free and you can even distribute modified versions) Good examples, except that they are not free, are Windows fonts Microsoft Sans Serif, Courier New and Times New Roman. kde debs + libvorbisenc2
Hi I have a debian woody and kde 2.2, and wanted to install kde3.0.3 from kde miror . So i added to sources list deb http://ftp.su.de/pub/kde/stable/3.0.3/Debian ./ deb-src http://ftp.su.de/pub/kde/stable/3.0.3/Debian ./ Everything went ok , but when i tried to upgrade there were problems libvorbisenc2 Kioslave depends on it but it doesn't seem to be able to find it. Then i tried to add testing main mirrors then i got the message that kioslave depends on libvorbis0 and libvorbisenc2 but libvorbis0 and libvorbisenc2 conflict .. Any ideas how to get kde working ( i don't want to move or mix with sid very much) Thanx

3.0.2 Slowness
Hi! I experienced a noticeable slowdown on my machine (Athlon [EMAIL PROTECTED] w/ 128M of RAM), when upgrading KDE from 2.2.2 to 3.0.2. I'm using woody, with some unstable packages. Is the amount of memory an issue here? For example, the KDE startup takes something like 1m30s to a full session and starting KMail 30s alone. This can't be normal, according to what I've read. What are the key issues here? My hard drive has UDMA/100 configured and working. -- Jaakko Kyrö

Woody's kcminit crashes at startup
I have an IBM a31p laptop on which I am trying to install Debian 3.0 (aka woody). ALL packages are official, stock Debian 3.0 r0 packages. I have X configured and working (using the VESA xfree86 driver, as 4.1 does not have a native driver for the video card). My next step in setting up Debian on this machine is to get KDE installed and working (woody's stock KDE only! -- testing/unstable packages need not apply). Everything falls apart at this point. :-( KDE crashes in the middle of it's startup cycle. It doesn't matter how I try to start it; it always crashes at the same point (just as ksplash moves to Initializing Peripherals). I've tried starting KDE via KDM, startx, even from a failsafe X session. It always crashes. I've tracked the problem down to kcminit from the following line in /usr/bin/kde2: LD_BIND_NOW=true kdeinit +kcminit +knotify I can't find any logs anywhere as to why kcminit is dieing. Does anyone have any ideas? Please CC me, as I am not subscribed to the list. Thanks, Garrick James

Even though there's no solution yet, I feel like getting closer..:) The strange thing is that it seems like a lot of people have had similar problems, but I haven't found any good solutions yet. Anyway, after a lot of fiddleing I managed to get an strace on kwin as you suggest. The trace is attached. Re: koffice is missing
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 You'll have to update to KDE 3.0.3 I found 3.0.3 packages at deb ftp://ftp.du.se/pub/mirrors/kde/stable/3.0.3/Debian ./ You should be able to find them at any KDE mirror. and - if you're using a mixed testing/unstable setup, then you have to wajig install koffice -t which was giving me a headache, because the new koffice debs just seemed disappeared when i was using wajig install koffice or wajig install koffice -t unstable just replace wajig with apt-get, if you dont use wajig, btw. br1 -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE9YtcLqCK9CeX6cL8RAvnzAKC6KJwslm0XLXlxhy/k1TzQjDYAMQCfQtGs AY22m6vrkuG+RXgJCfuK9TA= =b/t2 -END PGP SIGNATURE-

It's compiled against unstable (sid), however you can use it on testing by pulling a couple of packages back from unstable (apt-get -f install). Sadly, however, one of those packages is the new libc6, and you'll need to pull a new apache, etc, for that. What do you think about compiling 3.0.3 on woody against the woody's libraries and sid's qt3.0.5? I do not want to mix up woody and sid too much -especially libc. AOLme too/AOL Ah .. it seems cheeky to ask, but I'd really like to see packages compiled against vanilla Woody too. (new libc ... scary stuff .. mumble ..) Is it possible ? Is the new libc required because of the switch to gcc 3.2 ? (Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED]) If so, can we use gcc 2.95 instead (as well) ? With the reported speedups and all in KDE3, surely the credibility of Debian's premier just-released stable version would benefit from KDE 3.0.3 being in the optional feature set. Quite apart from the speedups and doodads, there's that oh-so-important Konqui-SSL fix. If a Woody KDE 3.0.3 isn't possible, would it be possible for someone to produce a binary deb of the patched 2.2.2 version of kdelibs-kssl ? (Actually, shouldn't a 2.2.2 fixed kdelibs-kssl appear as a Debian security fix ?) KDE 3.0.3 problem with Kpackage
When I try to launch Kpackage since upgrading to 3.0.3, I get the message KDEInit could not launch 'kpackage' Anyone else with a similar problem? Any ideas? Thanks Michael Sullivan
