Unless it is possible to install xlibs-pic while xfree 4.3 is installed
it probably won't work. KDE has to be compiled against xlibs-pic until
xfree 4.3 goes into Debian otherwise it fails to build on several archs.
With xfree 4.3 finally all libraries are compiled with -fPIC so it will
no longer be needed for it.

Just upgraded to KDE 3.1.2, and everything seems okay, but decided I should

Just look for everything that says kde and 2.2.2 :-) Normally that should
remove at least the binaries, there may be some leftovers from the
arch-independent packages.
Try apt-get remove --purge kde* arts*

I meant if it's possible that gcc 2.95 and 3.2 would be "somehow binary
incompatible" - they are, because of ABI, as you said. That's what I
wanted to know. Thanx.7

Actually it is, I'm using shfs and it requires compiling the kernel

Plus compiling nvidia driver. But that's ok with me as I recompile

Is what possible? To compile your QT apps against a library built with
2.9x? No, the so called ABI of 2.95, 3.0, 3.1, 3.2 are all incompatible
to each other. The KDE and also QT probably used 2.95 to compile so this
works.

You don't have to downgrade, export CC=gcc-2.95 and CXX=gcc-2.95, that
should do. Oh and don't forget to do an apt-get install gcc-2.95, it is
also available in sarge :) Only the gcc package changes according to the
transition to gcc-3.2

*EXACTLY*! This is the big gotcha, and caused a lot of pain during the
compiler transition in sid. One day, this will propagate down to Sarge, and
we'll relive it again ;)

Well, you *could* use gcc-2.95 to compile things IF you want to do it
successfully... I'm on a sarge system here, and doing likewise! Otherwise,
you'll have to use KDE3 from SID (Which unless you're on SID isn't a good
idea!)

New KDE's QT-3.1.2 && Sarge's gcc 3.2.3-0pre9 binary incompat?

2003-05-20 Thread Dave Lister
Hi there, I've just subscribed to this list - feel free to spank me if
I'm too BFUish ;)

I've installed new KDE 3.1.2 core libraries (from kde.org) on my SARGE.
It was a bit tricky as KDE's Arts is "only" 1.1.2-0 and Sarge's is
1.1.2-1. I've solved this manully and installed WOODY's libvorbis0 to
allow KDE's Arts slip in without further dependency problems. So far so
good. Now, I have new KDE's Arts, core and QT 3.1.2 libraries and
devel headers.

I'm using new gcc 3.2.3-0pre9, _not_ Woody's 2.9x, which was used to
compile all KDE's binary packages. Everyting seems to work all right,
new KDE apps and even my compiled-before-upgrade /usr/local/bin QT apps.

The problem is that any qt-based app I try to _compile_ now fails to get
linked, because of "undefined references", apparently the ones to
exports in libqt-mt.

My guess is that gcc 3.2 is somehow "binary incompatible" with older
2.9x and thus, linker fails to resolve all symbols in the 2.9x-compiled
libqt-mt.so.3.1.2.

First question:
Is it possible? If not, what could be the reason?

Second question:
Is there any other way than downgrading gcc back to Woody's 2.9x or
compiling the whole QT from sources (as I did in the days of unstable
  3.1)?

Thank you for ANY comments or hints.

David,

You may be interested in using my kde cvs packages that are built
against XFree86 4.3 debs and do not require the -pic. Info at
 http://opendoorsoftware.com/cgi/http.pl?p=kdecvs;frame=1

Alternatively if you dont want to go that crazy :D you may want to
apt-get install equivs and take a look at its documentation. equivs is
a dummy package which can be used to create Debian packages, which only
contain dependency information.

I use debmirror. Unfortunately, this script is not included in Woody, so
I append this script here (sorry list, it's only 18k). Use it as follows:

1. Create a local directoy where the kde312-files should go into:

  mkdir /home/arch/kde312

2. Copy kde312 files to that directory:

 ./debmirror /home/arch/kde312\
--nosource\
--dist=woody\
--host=mirrors.midco.net\
--root=/pub/kde/stable/3.1.2/Debian/\
--section=main

3. Append

  deb file:/home/arch/kde312 woody main

to /etc/apt/sources.list and update using apt-get and/or dselect.
That's all.

kde removes turn off for users during BOTH login and logout. Does anybody

Problems with Session Management with KDE 3.1.1a on Woody

2003-05-20 Thread Christoph Maurer
Hello!

I've got some problems with session management on my to computers
with Debian Woody. I recently upgraded from KDE 3.0.x to 3.1.1a with
the debs from download.kde.org.

Now, session management does not work correctly any longer.
Independent from the settings in the Control Panel, KDE opens a new
session each time I log in. But I want my old session to be started
again, or at least a saved default session.

.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc is modified and contains entries for
all running programs after I log out bit when I log in again none of
this programs is restarted.

Deleting/moving ~/.kde did not solve the problem.

Any ideas for a solution?

Thanks and best regards

Christoph

Daniel,

It seems as though the logic for nofinal has been lost, is it an oversight or
something I missed that now exists somewhere else?

diff ../kdelibs.old/admin/debianrules ../kdelibs/admin/debianrules
48,53c48
   $enable_final="--enable-final";
