Bug#512727: Cannot connect to ICQ: ICQ protocol change affecting Russia/Ukraine(maybe others).
It happened again... :( Some information which can be useful for bug fixing: http://forum.kde.org/kopete-icq-t-27811.html http://kedge.wz.cz/kopete/icqflacfix.diff Miranda patch: http://persei.miranda.im/files/icq+.patch I believe the bug is serious enough so the fix could appear in lenny (when it becomes stable) as well... If you installed the kde metapackage I guess you need to go through the single packages it pulls in and decide on a per-package basis which ones you need, then you can remove kde without loosing all the rest, which I guess? is your problem. Or, in simple terms: aptitude remove noatun as admin if it is not. Christoph

In fact using the xine backend everything works again. I was asking because with gstreamer i cannot even play ogg videos, which is a free format and so should be well supported. It just seemed strange that the preferred (the one automatically installed) backend cannot handle it and i immediately thought about a problem... thanks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Or, in simple terms: aptitude remove noatun as admin if it is not. Yes, I want to keep all the rest of KDE. Maybe I could do it easier if I could easily change file assocciations in Konqueror to change noatun to amarok or kaffeine as needed, but I don't know how to do this without having to go through all of the different file types. Ah, interesting how that meets... KDE does a poor job with file association. While you left click to open the file, and you could correct the program forever using the context menu, instead you need to open the control menu and do a difficult search. I tend to remove unusable players like noatun instead of spending too much time on resetting all those associations. You could create a feature request for KDE 4.3, you have my vote. Christoph
Re: KDE 4.2 impressions
Christoph Burgmer wrote: While KDE 4.2 is out for some days now, we still lack a feedback (or more precise an impressions) thread. I'd like to list some points, to a) encourage other people to switch/not to switch b) ask for help c) rant/share enjoyment 1) KDE 4.2 brings in new eyecandy, like a normal major release does. IMHO mostly positive. 2) More options available in many corners, some speak of feature parity with KDE 3.5, plasmoids on screensaver, message grouping in kmail 3) Some under the hood changes (akonadi...), which show that things get done, no major impact until now? though. 4) regressions like MSN settings lost, plasma crashes playing with new options 5) some KDE 4.0 and 4.1 bugs fixed, some bugs I was hoping somebody else would report still not fixed 6) new plasmoids, /me missing a TODO and _nice_ weather plugin, rssnow is cute but IMHO not functional 7) open/save dialogue still unusable, doesn't save settings and needs 10sec to load up (I guess due to nepomuk, running here on a Thinkpad R50e). Overall I'm rather disappointed, as the additional features don't make my average work easier, and the anoying bugs/performance issues persist. KDE 4.2 is bettern than 4.1 no doubt about that, but it is hyped as _the_ KDE4 release. Others might have a different opinion. Anyway, on the way to KDE 4.3 nepomuk hopefully gets faster. On a site note, as I pointed out in 5) there are bugs that I can't be bothered to report, though KDE devels keep pushing people to file bugs. I just get tired of waiting 2 years to have IMHO reasonable bugs fixed (not wishlist). Are there any receipts for getting a better experience? I actually got the kopete devels to quickly fix a Unicode bug for me, bad side of the story is I had to logon to IRC first. Christoph I love it in general. Especially dolphin with the konsole option. The 'working together' of the konsole (f4) and dolphin could be improved imho. When you go back to another folder in dolphin the konsole doesn't follow correctly for instance. I'm negative about the freedom KDE4 brings us... Be Free is not always Free imho. I can't choose another search engine in the new kmenu and that a big bug! Shouldn't a Debian be free to use the search engine he wants? And shouldn't it be possible in KDE to tweak this option? In fact using the xine backend everything works again. I was asking because with gstreamer i cannot even play ogg videos, which is a free format and so should be well supported. It just seemed strange that the preferred (the one automatically installed) backend cannot handle it and i immediately thought about a problem... Same with me, weired ogg problems, making me accuse Amarok for droping a important standard. I guess Phonon messes up the direct line of blame. Christoph
RE: Newbie but nevertheless sincere- replacing Xandros GUI on Asus 900a with KDE
Ana- Thank you for getting back to me. I have an Asus eee 900a which is a really really nice little machine. It was $200 at Best Buy (USA) with a variant of Xandros, and $240 with Windows XP. The GUI off-the-shelf, however, is made for five-year-olds and/or third world countries. The manufacturer has disabled the option to use the advanced desktop, and what I've read is that an accessible advanced desktop can be created with KDE Kicker and ksmserver. That's what I'm trying to do. I did write newbie in the subject line- I just began studying command paths from Konsole yesterday evening. So I've been trying to create a command path that points to the tars that I've downloaded. I basically just want to be able to get into the repositories that contain KDE (panel) kicker and ksmserver. I think I've tried the one you suggest, lenny, but I'm baffled by the i386 question and why that's happening. I know that i386 is an older architecture, and there are things in there that I probably need- but when I create the links to those repositories I get that error message. I will work on learning command-line better (so far I've not been able to do much from command-line) and I guess I'll try the stable lenny repository. Thanks. (Danke schoen?)
