Re: Amarok on etch

2008-02-11 Thread emisca
You can find amarok, libgpod etc. backports on my repo.
See http://emiscabpo.wordpress.com/about/
The apt line is:

Be aware that this is only a repo of software I backport for me and
that I share with everybody, as it is...

If you experience download problems, tuxfamily.org has problems on the
servers in these days, they are working on it.

we have on etch amarok version 1.4.4. This version supports ipod devices but
not a full featured. I have read that in the next versions the ipod support
 have been improved.

We have in backports kde 3.5.7, so my ask is if it would be possible to make a
backport of amarok or the dependencies are very stric. I have tried to make
it, but there's a lot of dependencies to bring that finally I have rejected
 it.

Someone have some backport of amarok?

Xembed (and perhaps flash 9.0.115) support in konqueror, kdebase and kdelibs fixes

I'm watching to bug reports about Xembed support missing on konqueror

seems to fix the issues, including the patch referenced in the 132138

How about pushing those fixes and ehnancement to sid packages?

You can see that there is a devices.desktop file in the dir

You could change it to link to media:/ and not devices:/
It's simple.

Re: kdelibs4 vs. kdelibs4c2

2006-01-31 Thread EmIscA
You have mixed packages from testing/unstable with the ones of stable
(sarge). There are two c++ compiler transitions for the next release of
debian (etch) that lead up to new names of library packages, the ones
ending with c2 and c2a. The second transition was caused by serious
problems with some libraries with the first g++ 4.0 configuration. See
the archives if you want to know more about this.
I suppose that VariCAD is linked against sarge's KDE packages and not
the newest one.
A possible solution is reinstall all sarge kde packages and remove the
newest ones. I don't know if this will break some user profile

Yes. Stable doesn't have kdelibs4c2*. How have you obtained these

Sigh,

If this CAD is opensource you can rebuild the package against

- kile-i18n (kile is updated)
- kompose (transitioned in amd64, I think others will follow)

There seem to be (say) three generations of USB mounting systems:

1) The good old way: USB partitions showed up in /proc somewhere, e.g.
/proc/partitions and one had to write an entry line in /etc/fstab and
then mount manually as root or create a desktop icon which mounts and
opens the device in konqueror. Problem: the partition labels change with
different devices, so you need to either do a bit of detective work
occasionally or maintain a whole zoo of /etc/fstab entries. (Completely
manual mounting without going through /etc/fstab often doesn't work
because often the file system type is unknown. In this case the only
thing I have found which will even find the partition is QTparted, a
super partitioning tool which is unfortunately incomplete and buggy and
no longer maintained or even part of Debian, as far as I can tell.)

If you want to have specific devices shown as specific nodes in /dev, you can
use hotplug and define some rules. And no, afaik, hotplug is _not_ obsolete.

2) The semiautomatic way: detective work as above in 1), then use pmount
/dev/sdxy. Device will show up in /media/sdxy and even on the
desktop if you have "show devices" activated in KDE. Problem: needs a
modern kernel.

Correct, but to get new features (and unfortunately auto-mounting of
usb-devices is relatively new to most linux-distributions, including debian)
you need to use new software. In that case an up2date kernel. (Although even
2.6.8 from Sarge would suffice)

3) The modern way: device icon appears automatically (unmounted) on
desktop. Clicking mounts it in Konqueror. Right-clicking allows safe
removal. Problem: requires modern kernel and lots of other things. Only
few distributions (e.g. Kunbuntu) seem to have gotten this right,
certainly not Sarge.

You're right. KDE starting from 3.4.0 supports this, but it didn't make it
into sarge. Although it's just your 2) + a nice GUI to handle it. It has some
points i dislike:
a) no automounting, you still need to mount the device. Fine if you're using
only kde-apps, but annoying for those who want to store a file from
OpenOffice, Mozilla or whatever on the USB-Device. They've to open the
directory in Konqueror, first.

b) mountpoints are related to the devicenode, not to the label of the
partition (like gnome-volume-manager and pmount-hal do)

I note that even 3) isn't true automounting, so maybe there is a 4).

  Yes there is.

The IMHO optimal solution is to combine hal (for detecting new attached
devices), pmount (for auto-mounting without being root) and a nice
userspace-programm like GVM which starts the right program for the right
medium (xine for VCD, Konqueror for Data-CD, USB-Stick, USB- or
Firewire-Harddrive). Right now, gnome-volume-manager does this job quite
nice. Unfortunately, g-v-m has nautilus hardcoded as filemanager, which makes
it a suboptimal choice for KDE-Users.

I wrote my own scripts (python) which do at least the auto-mounting thing
using pmount-hal. If you're interested, inform me. Although you should know
that i don't continue development of them nor are they really finished. But
they "just work".

automounting goodies but I can't seem to get it to work as I want it to.

When I plug the pen drive in I get this in the sys log

*SNIP***

and the device is automagically mounted at /media/usb0. The problem is that
when I try and copy a file onto the drive I get this in the sys log

*SNIP***
Sep 15 14:07:01 localhost kernel: scsi9 (0:0): rejecting I/O to dead device

*SNIP***

if I am regular user. If I am root everything works fine and dandy and I can
copy files to and from the drive.

I can see the drive in konqueror under media:/ (is there supposed to be a
media tab because I have to type that in manually?) however I can't safely
unmount it from there as I get this error message

umount: /media/usb0 is not in the fstab (and you are not root)

I was under the impression that it would all just work with KDE 3.4 but it
doesn't seem to.

I have pmount, hal, udev, hotplug and usbutils installed.

Many thanks, Graham

Re: KDM - Command equivalence to K Menu-Switch User-Start a new session?

2005-09-14 Thread EmIscA
Have you tried with a recent version of Xscreensaver? It provides a new
session button, when the screen is locked. It works on gnome and xfce, I
don't know if it works in other desktop managers.

Hi all,

Short Story :

I have one computer with 2 users, one usually using kde (3.4.2), the
other another wm/desktop env (Window Maker, or gnome).
It use kdm.
Is there a command that does the same thing than K Menu-Switch
User-Start a new session, so that I can start a new session from
another 'wm' than kde, or switch to an existing other session?

Thanks for any help,
Christophe

Long Story (where I already searched for solutions)

- gdm offers this functionnality, as it is included in the debian menu
by default (start new session, and even start new session in a window!).
- I didn't find any help in the kdm help, google didn't help, kde wiki
neither, and there's no help at all for kdmctl (I feel that it is part
of the solution...)
- There's not an identified entry for that command in the kde menu
manager
- I didn't find any clues in the DCOP manager (no kdm entry in the DCOP
manager)
- Btw, it's possible to switch from one session to another using
Meta-Fxx, but not creating a new one...
- if anybody have the answer here, I will have to learn again how the
debian menu is managed, to add an entry for that...

To conclude, I fell that problem may be a cause for an user to switch
from kdm to gdm, as it's a more easy way to solve the problem... Maybe
that menu entry should be included in the kdm debian package...

kde 3.3.2 and multi-head

2005-09-12 Thread EmIscA
I've configured my debian testing with kde 3.3.2 to use two screens
using an ati video card in dual head mode without Xinerama (in that way
I can have two kde desktops with separate panels).
Kde panels and applets on the second screen are not localized (screen 0
is in italian, screen 1 is in english).

Does someone noticed this behaviour?

Re: dropouts when playing multimedia

2005-09-10 Thread EmIscA
What audio card do you have? Do you use OSS or ALSA? Do you use esd
sound server in gnome (probably yes, it's enabled by default)?

Have you changed something in your configuration recently?
Bye

Hello,

I am using KDE 3.3.2 on Debian Sid. Recently the following problem has cropped
up. Whenever playing back multimedia (audio and/or video) there are brief
pauses. This happens with XMMS, and also Xine.

There is no problem if I use the Gnome desktop. I guess I will be switching to
Gnome for now because I cannot figure out what is causing this. If anyone has
a better suggestion or knows anything about the problem, please get back.

Thanks in advance,
James

Re: utility for temperature

Try with Karamba or SuperKaramba with an appropriate plugin.
Look at http://netdragon.sourceforge.net/sdownload.html and
http://www.kdelook.org for the plugins.

i know something like ktemperature but i would like to know if there
is something achievable via apt

kde 3.3.2 and Dual Head

2005-09-05 Thread EmIscA
I'm trying to use kde 3.3.2 on my debian testing with a dual head
configuration (not Xinerama). My system is configured in italian. The
first monitor has an italian kde instance while the second monitor is in
english. How I can change that?

Thanks

Re: klaptop 3.4/3.4.1 from alioth shows wrong battery percentage

2005-07-27 Thread EmIscA
I've seen that the wrong percentage is calculated using the design
capacity and not the last full capacity, as it does in the configuration
window.
So with the battery in this state klaptop icon before I update it with
the configuration window's button, says 82% which it's the percentage
relative to 3589mah to 4300mah.

$ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/info
present: yes
design capacity: 4300 mAh
last full capacity: 3589 mAh
battery technology: rechargeable
design voltage: 14800 mV
design capacity warning: 430 mAh
design capacity low: 215 mAh
capacity granularity 1: 264 mAh
capacity granularity 2: 3780 mAh
model number:GC86503PAG0
serial number:
battery type:LiON
OEM info:PANASONIC

I think there is also an acpi implementation bug, because my notebook
never reached 4300mah state even when I bought it, and it doesn't not
have a panasonic battery

english the string would be Start battery monitor or similar). In
klaptop configuration the percentage is always correct, I think it's
only a bug with the tray icon refresh code.
Does anyone noticed this?
Feel free to ask me further details about my configuration or debug
informations (telling me what commands I must type...).
