firefox and saved sessions...
Interestingly enough, kde-3.4 apparently corrects this problem (or firefox 1.0.2). Discovered this when testing Ubuntu
Re: firefox and kde: saved sessions
Mozilla used to have this same problem, but now it will "remember" that it was running when the kde session was closed and it automatically starts up in the correct virtual windows. It is not only that it restarts, but that it restarts in the correct virtual window as well. I think if I place a firefox entry inside the Autostart folder, this will start firefox, but not in the virtual window I had at the time of session shutdown. This seems to be only a temporary work around. I suppose that firefox was not intended to be "kde-aware" since kde supplies a browser in konqueror. However, many other ":non-KDE" applications startup fine in the correct virtual window following a shutdown of a kde session. For me, these include on a regular basis: evolution, xmms, gnome-terminal (like better than konsole, btw), vmware, etc. It seems there should be a waay to "fix" firefox to establish this behavior. Perhaps send as a bug report to the firefox development folks ? or a bug-report to the firefox debian package and ultimately get up the chain ?
firefox and kde: saved sessions
I have a Debian/Sid system with both kde and firefox installed. Apparently, the default insallation does not allow for firefox to restart automatically when a saved session of kde is restarted from kdm. Is there a cofiguration parameter I can set to allow this to happen ? Right now firefox is the only application I use that does not restart automatically when kde starts up. what happened to qtcups ?
I have found qtcups very handy for printing a document using cups and the kde interface. Apparently in the latest round of upgrades to kde/cups, this package went away. problem with KDE3.2 taskbar
As I find problems with the experimental KDE 3.2 packages, I suppose we are to keep reporting them here until such time as they are in SID and we can use the bug reporting system: I presently cannot change the configuration of the task bar under the panel configuration. I get the following error message to the screen when I try to configure the task bar: __ There was an error loading the module. KDE 3.2 experimental seems sluggish
Excuse me if this is a FAQ. I am mostly pleased with the experimental debs of KDE3.2 made available recently. Thanks goes to the individuals involved. I have noticed that the graphical performance seems sluggish. By this I mean when switching from one virtual window to another (example ctrl-F1, ctrl-F2, etc.), the time to see the new screen is on the order of a few seconds whereas under KDE3.1.5, it was less than a second. This machine has plenty of memory. Indeed, the swap space has not been touched. -- James D. Freels, Ph.D. Oak Ridge National Laboratory [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: kdm, kcontrol, and other problems under KDE 3.2 with Sid
OK. This corrects at least part of the problem with KDM. Another problem with kcontrol: I cannot enable a password-less login (home machine). I don't think the preferences menu show up on the Kmenu unless you have used it before ? It is not showing up on the root account. Of all accounts, root should be able to run kcontrol. I sure hope xmms gets fixed sooner rather than later. thanks for the info. On Sat, 2004-02-21 at 17:43, James Stark wrote: > > 1) kdm does not work. kdm, kcontrol, and other problems under KDE 3.2 with Sid
I have installed the un-released kde3.2 packages as recommended on http://wiki.debian.net/?DebianKDE for Sid users who are impatient. These packages are very good indeed and thanks to those who have made them available. Here is a couple of problems I have had: 1) kdm does not work. The symptoms appear to be Xauthority related. There is a temporary Xauthority file getting created in /var/run/xauth/. After logging into kde using the kdm front end, the system just does nothing. Nothing appears to be running inside of X. I can get out with a cntrl-alt-backspace. 2) individual logins at the console and an "exec startkde" via the .xinitrc file and xinit works fine as usual and expected. 3) There is not kcontrol icon in the Kmenu. I had to add this by hand. YOu just about have to have kcontrol ! 4) My xmms-arts package had to be removed, so I have problems running xmms under kde3.2 using the arts sound server. -- James D. how to compile/use "make xconfig" in the the 2.5.x kernel configuration
The development kernel 2.5.x (I am testing 2.5.67 presently) now uses the qt development libraries to build one of the x-interfaces to config (make xconfig). I cannot seem to get this to work apparently because I do not have QTDIR exported to the correct directory. konqueror and stored password ?
At the risk of getting flamed by people who don't do this for security reasons, I have a question on konqueror. kaddressbook in sid problem fixed
I fixed my own problem by adding the following entry to /etc/apt/sources.list deb-src ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/packages/desktops/kde/stable/3.1/Debian woody main underneath the normal sid source so as to take a second-tier in priority. kaddressbook (kab) in sid
It has been a while since I have installed kde3.1 from sid and everything that is there works great. I obtain kmail from kdenetwork packages of cheney, but I did not realize until today that kaddressbook was not in the packaging. I hope we can get that soon. In the mean time, does anyone know how to get a binary or easily build from source. "apt-get -b source kab" failed out of the box. kmail within kde3.1 on sid ?
This is so frustrating ! We patiently await the release of 3.1 for sid. It is announced and we patiently wait for the packages to arrive through the normal route through the Debian system. Many people of commented that there is no kmail (kdenetwork). If I upgrade to KDE3.1 without kmail, will the kmail from the old version work ? Not likely. Therefore, we must continue to wait because we depend on kmail... What is the status and/or reason kmail is not available yet ? frustrated but not complaining... -- James D. related to the kdm hangs ? system crashes !
I posted earlier about the kdm long startup time. Sorry, I did not realize this problem was already known and had already been posted in this forum. On another note: Two times now on two separate Debian/Sid machines (once per machine), the system has come to an absolute screeching halt ! It does appear related to the recent KDE packages. I cannot find any notice about what has happened written to the log files. The only clue there is the long pause between log entries and when I finally hit the reset button. It also appears to occur following a screen save. This problem at present is not repeatable (at least I don't know how to repeat it). I am glad I am using the reiserfs ! -- James D. kdm problem in Karolina's 3.1.0+rel debs
I have upgraded to Karolina's new 3.1.0+rel kde debs on my Debian/Sid system. With this upgrade, along came a problem with kdm. It seems there is a memory leak. The kdm startup hangs in a loop and becomes very large in memory size; never finishing. It is running the "kdm_greet" process. I just enter "/etc/init.d/kdm stop" to end it, and I can then enter kde from startkde within xinit. Everything else seems OK from here. -- James D. Freels, Ph.D. Oak Ridge National Laboratory [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: trouble with kdeprint: problem fixed !
I am happy to report that the new set of debs for version 3.1.0+rc6 of KDE corrects this problem. I am now able to print correctly from all applications that enable printing. Furthermore, since this is also a new CUPS installation from old LPRNG installation, it is really very nice indeed! Great work by the KDE team and Karolina for the debs. Thanks all ! a workaround: final posting since no help
WEll, I am getting absolutely no help in this forum. However, I did figure out a work around that allows me to get prints from kde apps until such time as the system stabilizes and things work as they should. I can pick the printer "print to PS file" which then does not call the kdeprintd and simply creates a postscript file selectively on my harddrive. Then, using the debian package qtcups, I can print to a cups printer that was set up inside of kde. Go figure it ! -- James D. Freels, Ph.D. Oak Ridge National Laboratory [EMAIL PROTECTED]
an additional clue
On my home machine, I have a simiilar setup with Debian/Sid and the kde3.1.0+k1 packages from Karolina. However, on this machine, I do not have the same problems with kdeprintd error messages. However, on my home machine I have a single printer and use the lprng packages and not teh cups packages. I have no idea if this problem is related but at least I can print ! Currently, I cannot print on this machine through a kde process (I can print with lpr command through the cupsys-bsd packages) outside of kde. This is just really frustrating! -- James D. strange font problem in kde-2.2.2: can't change fixed-width fonts
I am using a current Debian/Sid. With or without "anti-aliasing fonts "enabled, I cannot change fixed-width fonts from the control center. When I click "choose" in that category of the control center->look and feel->fonts, the screen garbles up, and will not allow me to do anything from the console (no crtl-alt-backspace, no crtl-alt-f1, etc.). Among them were several kde/qt packages as listed below to -19.deb version and the icons were not visible on the desktop (broken as before). -rw-r--r--1 root root 894 Jan 7 20:26 qt-designer.list -rw-r--r--1 root root 293 Jan 7 20:26 uic.list -rw-r--r--1 root root 308 Jan 7 20:26 libqt2.list -rw-r--r--1 root root 261 Jan 7 20:26 libqutil1.list -rw-r--r--1 root root 261 Jan 7 20:26 libqt2-mt.list -rw-r--r--1 root root 261 Jan 7 20:26 libqt2-gl.list -rw-r--r--1 root root 239 Jan 7 20:26 libqt-mt-dev.list -rw-r--r--1 root root 239 Jan 7 20:26 libqt-gl-dev.list -rw-r--r--1 root root 8868 Jan 7 20:26 libqt-dev.list I then downgraded these same nine packages from -18.deb files I had saved from the previous version, and everything is now working as it should (icons appear again). ii libqt-dev 2.3.1-18 Qt GUI development headers, static libraries ii libqt-gl-dev 2.3.1-18 Qt GUI development libraries for GL version ii libqt-mt-dev 2.3.1-18 Qt GUI development headers, static libraries ii libqt2 2.3.1-18 Qt GUI Library (runtime version). ii libqt2-gl 2.3.1-18 Qt GUI Library (GL version). ii libqt2-mt 2.3.1-18 Qt GUI Library (runtime threaded version). ii libqutil1 2.3.1-18 Qt Util Library ii qt-designer2.3.1-18 Qt GUI Designer ii uic2.3.1-18 Qt ui compiler
Re: problem with current kde: "Can't load docking tray icon!"
Ah!, the libpng2 fix quoted above fixes this problem. On Monday 31 December 2001 15:40, James D. problem with current kde: "Can't load docking tray icon!"
With a current set of packages for kde under Debian/Sid/i386, version 2.3.1-18 of libqt2 is installed. I get the subject error message in a popup window. I click "OK" and I can run everything except what is supposed to be in the docking tray. Taking the suggesting in previous postings to downgrade to version 2.3.1-17 of the libqt2 package does eliminate this problem, but creates many more. So, I did an "apt -f install" to get the newer version back. Just wanted to point this out in case no one is aware of it. I assume it is being worked by Ivan or someone helping him. Thanks for KDE/Debian...
Netscape 6.2/Mozille 0.9.5 now fails in Debian/Sid
I have a current Debian/Sid system with KDE 2.2.1 installed. An update today caused both Netscape 6.2 and Mozilla 0.9.5 to fail. The failure i causes X-windows to come to a complete halt and revert back to the Linux console. I noticed Netscape 4.79 was released today, so I installed this and am no longer using Mozilla until such time as the problem is corrected. I am attaching the errors printed to the console when this happened. -- James D. Netscape6.2/Mozilla0.9.5 broken for Debian/Sid
I also utilize the KDE 2.2.1 windowing environment which may have contributed to this problem. After an upgrade in Sid today (11/16/01), both packages fail X-windows/KDE hard and I receive back the linux console. I have attached the X-windows output for both failures (NS and mozilla). I suspect java-related issues, but I am certainly not sure. Both packages are slow on my system anyway. KDE 2.2.1 for Debian/Alpha
Excuse me if this has been announced officially somewhere else, but this is significant to me! Debian/Alpha/Testing/Woody finally has KDE 2.2.1 available! With the recent availability of KDE 2.2.1 in general for Woody, the Alpha version is also included. It seems to be working fine on my Alpha. Re: X broken in current Debian/Sid/Unstable ?
Mariusz: Thanks, this corrected the problem. Now it seems that a bug-report should be filed. But which package is at fault? xfonts-base was not a package that got upgraded. So, an update from one of yesterday's changes caused the fonts directories to get wiped. an update-fonts-alias (as suggested by Nick) perhaps needs to be called from one of the other package updates... kscreensaver broken
Hello Debian KDE users! I have two Intel Debian/Woody machines with KDE2.2 installed. Both machines have nvidia 3d opengl capability under XFree86-4.1. The problem: In the control center, the opengl screensavers are working in the test mode. However, on the real screen they do not. But, the slide-show screen saver does work for me in both test and real modes. I have read of similar problems in another kde newsgroup. Do we know if this problem is being worked? If not, is there a way I can file a bug report to KDE ? Thanks... -- James D. Freels, P.E._i, Ph.D. Oak Ridge National Laboratory [EMAIL PROTECTED] - work [EMAIL PROTECTED] - home

OK. It is working now. I took your suggestion. I also clicked "file->save" and "file->make active". I really need the notification feature to remind me of meetings. The right click on the Korgainzer alarm monitor reveals a check by "alarms enabled". It seems that the root of all my problems with DCOP was due to a theme written and designed for kde 2.1. If I tried to use the eclipse theme for 2.1 on kde 2.2, then it breaks kde 2.2. still broken, need help: DCOP problem
I didn't get a response to the last query, so I thought I would try again. I have a current Debian/Woody system. I recently upgraded to 2.2.0beta1. Things went OK for a day or two, but then I upgraded to new packages again on 7/10. Then for some reason I do not understand, kde will not start now. The symptom (error messages) are DCOP error messages for essentially every kde application. It will not even get past the initialization phase. What package supplies DCOP? (kdebase ?) perhaps I should try to reinstall the kde packages? Need some guidance here... -- James D. broken kde 2.2.0_beta --- DCOP
I installed on 7/9 and things worked fine. Then I upgraded on 7/10 (yesterday) and today it is broken. I get the following messages for each kde application that tries to configure KUniqueApplication: DCOP communication error! during the KDE start. Startup takes a much longer than normal time at "configuring windows manager" phase and is outputing lost of the above messages to the console. Then the screen stays at the background color and KDE stops. A ctrl-Alt-backspace gets me back to the console from which I can exit. I am sending the kmail from a gnome-1.4 session. Any help appreciated. I suspect a number of people have a similar problem and Ivan will be sending out new packages soon (I hope). -- James D. printing from kmail: I have an issue/problem
When printing from kmail, the KDE logo is always printed with the e-mail just as the screen image includes. Is there a way to remove the logo from the screen and/or hardcopy (particularly the hardcopy)? It is quite a nuisance to explain to folks "what is that K symbol" as if it were some type of political or religious group. Can't we just keep it simple somehow ? Thanks for listening... -- James D. ksock.h ?
I am trying to compile a non-debian kde package called kblade. The configure script to build the package depends on kde headers containing a file called "ksock.h". I can't seem to find this anywhere. What package (if any) includes this header file ? P.S. I am using Debian/unstable and have installed task-kde-devel -- James D. screensave back for me now
I should have read the debian-kde archive list (I currently do not subscribe) first. I am going to guess that kscreensaver was pulled from kdebase and made a separate package. I have reinstalled it, and am now happily saving the screen. New question: Is there a way to get a current list (and kept current) of all kde-enabled packages available in debian/unstable ? Thanks -- James D. Freels, P.E._i, Ph.D. Oak Ridge National Laboratory [EMAIL PROTECTED] - work [EMAIL PROTECTED] - home
screensaver no longer working
With the most recent update of kde packages for debian/unstable, a number of things occured that are worthy of a bug report, but I can't believe they are not already reported: 1) screensaver has only a blank screen, all other options went away 2) The default fonts have changed 3) other ? konsole issue with kde 2.1.1/sid
I am current with the unstable tree of Debian which includes kde 2.1.1 packages. Until recently, things have been great with kde. However, I now have an annoying bug that I cannot seem to fix. I suspect it crept in through a recent kde upgrade. Everytime I startup a konsole app, I get a pup-up error message box that I must click "OK" to remove. The error message states Font 7x13 not found Check README.linux.console for help. Of course, I have consulted the README file, but I cannot determine what is the problem. Please help or confirm it is a bug that needs to be fixed. -- James D. Freels, P.E._i, Ph.D. Oak Ridge National Laboratory [EMAIL PROTECTED] - work [EMAIL PROTECTED] - home
Re: on upgrading to testing
The main reason I am considering going with the unstable version is to get the AA fonts in KDE 2.1. I did a "apt-get -d install kde-base" after enabling the unstable tree and hitting an "apt-get update". What I found was most of the development packages as I expected like libc, gcc, etc. However, there also was the perl packages which have been reported as very buggy. I can't deal with that. What is the status of these packages now. Like you , my system must be functional at work. I don't use anything else. >There have been some issues. Bugs crop up. on upgrading to testing
Sorry if this is a FAQ, but I am not currently subscribing to the list(s). I am looking for an honest opinion. I currently am a Debian 2.2.r2 (with several extensions) user. Because of several circumstances among which are: 1) I manually installed Xfree86-4.0.2 over the stable version to get access to the 3D capabilities--running fine 2) I installed KDE2.1 from Ivan via his potato archives at kde.tdyc.com--running fine 3) kde.tdyc.com is now gone so Ivan has no where to upgrade that tree for us stable users--Ivan has gone far and beyond what most people would have put up with this. I could live with, but for a desire to keep kde 2.1 bug-fixes current via apt-get. 4) I just found out over the web how to use anti-aliasing fonts under kde 2.1 and I would very much like to do that--neat stuff!! 5) I have everything I need to use the anti-aliasing features except the potato version of kde2.1 is not compiled to handle it.-- :-( I understand though! So, to get what I want, I can either 1) bite the bullet and upgrade to 'testing' and install the kde 2.1 packages that have anti-aliasing capability compiled in, or 2) try to build the kde 2.1 packages from source like some have done I really would rather go with option 1. My only concern is the stability, etc. What has been the experience of those who are now running 'testing' ?? And I will listen. Please e-mail responses directly if possible. Thanks... P.S. do I need 'testing' or 'unstable' ? If 'unstable', I will hold. -- James D. Freels, P.E._i, Ph.D. Oak Ridge National Laboratory [EMAIL PROTECTED] - work [EMAIL PROTECTED] - home
Re: vote
I vote for option 3 because the other two would not be stable. Potato implies stable (I think *is* very stable). sound fixed on kde 2.0.1 !!
I have a Yamaha on-board sound card (ymf740c) and use the alsa drivers. With version 2.0 kf kde, the kde2-enabled sound was garbled. The new version 2.0.1 fixes this problem with special configuration for the yamaha "cards". My sound now works great! -- /------\ |James D. why is sound not working properly ?
Debian-KDE2 colleagues: I have all the latest potato kde2 packages installed here on my work machine and home machine. Everything seems to be working properly except the sound on my work machine. I have the same setup on my home machine, but the sound works properly on that machine. The difference is that the home machine is using the kernel-internal sound drivers for the pci-card soundblaster-16, whereas the work machine is using the kernel-external ALSA sound drivers for the Yamaha DS-XG PCI (YMF740C) on the motherboard. The sound on the work (ALSA Yamaha drivers) machine is garbled. It works somewhat, but not entirely correctly. Basically, all sound-enabled applications (such as realplayer, xmms, etc.) that are not kde2 applications, the sound works fine. On the other hand, all kde2 sound-enabled applications (internal wav player, kaiman, etc.) the sound comes out, but is garbled. On the home machine, all sound works properly. I suspect an 8 bit/16 bit issue or some other incompatibility. Are there any ideas on how to fix this? I have seen several sound-related issues on this mailing list, so I apologize if this is a FAQ. -- /--\ |James D. Re: kde1 anyone
For Alpha machines, until such time as kde2 becomes available, yes I would say keep kde1 debs available if at all possible. >Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2000 16:27:55 -0700 >Resent-from: debian-kde@lists.debian.org >From: "Ivan E.
