Bluetooth, syncing and mobile stuff is on a much more advanced level in sid. My experience with sid on both my laptop and workstation is, that the applications are generally stable enough (way more stable than Windoze anyway), but that you have to be rather careful when updating, especially dist-upgrading. The xorg blow-up of the last week is a testament to that. Despite the odd hickup now and then benefits of sid stil by far outweighs the disadvantages on a desk-/laptop. regards Jan -- ** Do not use the reply-to address. KMail auto-killing the first receipt-account in the list??????
I am using the following combo: KDE 3.5, Kontact 1.2 and Kmail 1.9.1 on a Sid system with my own kernel. The problem described below was also present on my previous KDE 3.4.3 + whatever version of kmail was current then. What happen is: Every time I start up kmail or kontact, the first account, in the list of receiving accounts, has been deleted from Kmail. I add it again. It is now the last account in the list. Upon closing/starting kmail/kontact, the new number one of the list (the previous no 2) as been removed. As the problem has persisted through an upgrade, I am am quite sure one of the configuration files has been screwed up. But which one and where? 1) Has anybody out there experienced this and found a cure? 2) Can somebody please direct me to some detailed documentation on the kmail filestructure and fileformats, as I haven't been able to find any? Is it a KDE or udev/hotplug problem ? Thanks in advance, ElVirolo Do an update/upgrade. The replacement for the broken x11-common is already available. Jan -- ** Do not use the reply-to address. Startup problem on fresh KDE 3.5 install
I have recently installed to systems, a laptop and a desktop, from scratch, with sid/kde 3.5. (a minimum non-desktop install from the latest stable net-install cd image. Changing the apt config files to sid, doing an update / dist-upgrade getting kde 3.5 from alioth) Both systems exhibits the same strange startup behaviour: When logging a user on to KDE 3.5, through kdm, the process stops at the peripherals icon for about 15 seconds whereafter the screen goes black and the user is returned to the kdm login screen. Login into twm from kdm, and executing startkde (as root), starts up kde just fine. Here comes the weird part of the story: From then on it is just possible to normally log into kde from kdm (after exiting kde and twn). The only way to start kde as a non-root user seems to be to first start up kde as root, stopping kde and then login in normally through kdm. I don't see any log entries indicating that something is wrong. Exactly the same processes are running before and after starting/stopping kde from twm. I suspect a rights issue somewhere but is somewhat stuck! Googling for answers hasn't provided any hints. On yet another system, running sid/kde 3.4, I have upgraded kde to 3.5 and it is working just fine. Any ideas? Thanks in advance Jan Schledermann -- ** Do not use the reply-to address. It should be: % ls -ld /tmp drwxrwxrwt 14 root root 3072 2006-01-14 13:16 /tmp That's OK! Do you have a drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 1024 2006-01-14 10:20 .ICE-unix file after trying to start as normal user? Yes - with the normal user as owner Do you have that file after trying to start as root? Yes - with root as owner And here it is getting interesting. Running startkde from an xterm, as a non-root user, actually gives me the error message: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root So your questions where right on the money. The $1 question is then: How to make sure that .ICE-unix actually IS set to root AUTOMATICALLY by kde??? I spent some time snooping around on the kde 3.5 system which was upgraded from kde 3.4 to see if I could spot any differences. And I could. The 2 systems that I recently installed where installed from scratch with the xorg server, whereas the working system was changed on the fly from xfree86 to xorg. Though x11-common is installed on the non-working systems, there is no /etc/init.d/x11-common file present. On the working systems both /etc/init.d/x11-common and /etc/init.d/x86free-common are present. The x11-common is actually called upon starting up. In this script the .ICE-unix directory is set up. I extracted the relevant code from the x11-common script and inserted it in the script below, and run it from /etc/rc5 (which is my x-runlevel: #!/bin/sh #/etc/init.d/ice-unix_init script # jan 15, 2006 ICE_DIR=/tmp/.ICE-unix if [ -e $ICE_DIR ] [ ! -d $ICE_DIR ]; then mv $ICE_DIR $ICE_DIR.$$ fi mkdir -p $ICE_DIR chown 0:0 $ICE_DIR chmod 1777 $ICE_DIR # end of script And everything is working now. If I ever happen to get bored enough I my try to find out why this happend ;-) Anyway thanks for your help, and my apologies for wasting your time by not picking up on the error message by myself. Executing the script at regualar intervals is also possible but would probably a waste of resources. Re: KDE menu applications gone
Alan Ezust wrote: Sorry, could you elaborate on how you did an apt-get of an older version of the .deb file? I am in exactly the same boat - I just downgraded to testing, and kcontrol shows up with no icons at all. Just download kdelibs-data_3.3.2-6.1_all.deb from www.debian.org (search packages). After download, as root, do: dpgk -i ./kdelibs-data_3.3.2-6.1_all.deb from the directory where you put the downloaded file. dpkg will now downgrade your kde-libs data. You should be aware however that from then on in you will be bugged about a broken package, but you'll have a working kde until you can upgrade it properly. Jan -- ** Do not use the reply-to address.
