can not start kdesktop_lock
Hi! I have kde 3.5.5 (testing). I'm experiencing a weird problem. When clicking on the Desktop Lock button on the Lock/Logout applet, or pressing the hotkey associated with Lock Session, then sometimes kdesktop_lock won't start. I need to press the button three or four times to get it started. I have no error entry in my ~/.xsession-errors and have no idea how to debug this :\ I've tried to replace the kdesktop_lock binary with a script which calls strace with kdesktop_lock, but it says: strace: ptrace(PTRACE_TRACEME, ...): Operation not permitted Any ideas would be appreciated. The main point is, why would anyone want to deny the desktop access to the kwallet when it is already open? I can understand that if kwallet is not open you have to supply the password to open it, but when it is already open it doesn't make sense to ask the user if he wants to use information in it. If you left your console without logging out, an evil person could just say yes when the desktop prompts the user to get access. And she would already have access to much more sensitive information. Another argument would be if someone were to somehow spoof an icon so that is accesses the wallet without you knowing it, but in that case I'd say you already have bigger problems on your hand. If nobody can come up with good counter argument, I will file a wishlist bug about this. 1. You can have the wallet automatically closed if no program uses it any longer and on screen lock and... If you leave your desktop unlocked (for whatever reason), you may want to enable immediate closing of the wallet after each use (yes, you can do that). This feature is not always usable... for example when kopete starts, it opens a wallet, and leaves it open as long as kopete is running. You have to quit kopete to close the opened wallet (but why would you want to do that?). Although, you can set a timeout for closing the wallets, the minimum value is 1 minute. A lot of things can happen to your computer during that 1 minute if you leave it open (i.e.: not locking the desktop), but in this case there is the Close all wallets feature which is usefull, if you are paranoid and do not want to lock your desktop for every 20 second leaving. can not start any session from kdm
Hi! I have kde-3.4, and in kdm I can choose from sessions 'default', 'custom', 'kde' and 'failsafe'. All of these choises leads to one end: an xterm window opens, and nothing more... I can start 'startkde' from that xterm window, and than kde starts, and it is fully functionable, but it doesn't matter which session I chose from kdm's dropdown list, I always end up with just an xterm window instead of starting kde (or the apropriate, selected window manager). I have XFree 4.3.0.dfsg.1-10 installed from debian sarge, but I've compiled kde-3.4 myself, and it is in it's default dir (/usr/local/kde). In my homedir: .xinit - .xinitrc .xsession - .xinitrc $ cat .xinitrc startkde (^^^ this is for the custom session) I can see from /usr/local/kde/share/config/kdm/Xsession file, that choosing failsafe would start the xterm progeam only, choosing custom is parsing my .xsession file, and choosing default is starting /usr/local/kde/bin/startkde. It seems, no matter what I choose, kdm always starts the failsafe mode, and opens up an xterm window only. I can not see any error messages in my kdm.log or XFree's log files (regarding this issue). I've installed xdm, to see if it works, but after typing my login name and password, and hitting enter, my screen flickers, and I get back xdm again, with cleared login name and password fields. This is Debian Bug #280175 and KDE Bug #92619. Myself and the other members of the KDE team have repeatedly stated that work was in progress, and asked for your patience. I'm happy to announce that the 'gnupg-agent' package is available as of today in Debian Sid, and hopefully soon from Debian Sarge as well. It is a kind of fuzzy issue, as my desktop PC and my notebook are mostly using same versions and I only have the problem on my notebook. No real solution here, anyway. can not use the select with mouse feature in konsole with kernel 2.6
Hi! I'm running kde-3.2.3, and linux kernel 2.6.7. If I start mc (or any app which is using ncurses) in the 'konsole' kde app, I can not select lines with SHIFT+LEFT_MOUSE_CLICK. This selecting is working with kernel 2.4.*, and also, if I'm not running mc, just the simple 'konsole' app, I still can not select lines with SHIFT+LEFT_MOUSE_CLICK, but at least I can select lines without the SHIFT key being pressed down. But I can not do this in mc, because if I don't push the SHIFT button, then it enters to a dir. I don't know if it matters, but I'm using an usb mouse and usb keyboard with the usbhid module. can not open Font Installer in Control Center
Hi! I have a big problem with the brand new kde3.2. I've compiled it from sources today, and installed it. It almost works perfectly ;) When I open the Control Center, and try to click on the System Administration / Font Installer, I get this message (in a new window): --###-- There was an error loading the module. [Details] The diagnostics is: Library files for libkcm_fontinst.la not found in paths Possible reasons: An error occurred during your last KDE upgrade leaving an orphaned control module You have old third party modules lying around. Check these points carefully and try to remove the module mentioned in the error message. If this fails, consider contacting your distributor or packager. --###-- Then it can not open the Font Installer stuff on the Control Center, I can only see an empty window. The `echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH` output: /home/leva/lib:/home/leva/Kylix3/bin:/home/leva/Kylix3/help/lib/locale/hu_HU: /home/leva/Kylix3/help/lib:/usr/local/java/lib:/usr/local/java/jre/lib: /usr/local/kde/lib:/usr/local/qt/lib Weird thing, is that when I run the Control Center from Konsole (with kcontrol) and not from the Kmenu, and try to click on the same System Administration / Font Installer, I get this message (in a new window): --###-- Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: Error loading 'kio_fonts'. --###-- But then, it shows the Font Installer stuff in the Control Center; I can see the buttons in the toolbar (Reload, New Folder, etc...), but when I click on the Reload I get this error again: --###-- Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: Error loading 'kio_fonts'. --###-- If I type fonts:/Personal in the konqueror's location bar, I get the very same error message (even when I type fonts:/System). I tried to reinstall (recompile) everything, but that didn't fix it. Is there some program that I must run before using this feature in the Control Center, or this is an error caused by some misconfiguration? What could be the problem? Thanks a lot! Daniel -- LeVA
Re: k3b burning audio discs
2004. január 05. 14:54 dátummal [EMAIL PROTECTED] ezt írta: Any ideas, anyone? I have had this problem too, but figured out fortunately. I'm writing my solution, but that doesn't mean, that it will be working for you. First of all if you compiled k3b from sources it is usefull to do it with --enable-debug, and when you installed it, run k3b from konsole. Then k3b will put a lot of useful info to the konsole. You should check k3b's setup too. Settings - Configure K3b - Plugins. If you don't see there any plugins, then that is the problem. For ogg decoding you have to have ogg+vorbis installed, and for mp3 decoding you have to have the mad libraries. And don't forget that if you compile k3b from sources, you also have to have those lib's devel packages. But for wav decoding, you don't need anything, k3b has a wav loader included in it. But you must see the K3b Wave Decoder in the above mentioned K3b plugins window to be able to load wav files. So if you don't have anything in that plugin list, then you probably installed the libs to the wrong dir, or there aren't any plugins at all :) You should search you k3b prefix for *libk3bwavedecoder*. If you found it, then make sure it's directory is in you LD_LIBRARY_PATH, or in the etc/ld.so.conf. If you found it but still nothing, and k3b doesn't load the plugins, then try to symlink them into the kde's libdir (usually /usr/local/kde/lib), and see if it works. If it is working, then maybe you've installed the libraries to the wrong directories. K3b is looking for it's plugins in it's $PREFIX/lib. The default prefix during the ./configure is /usr/local/kde. And if you don't add any additional arguments to the configure, then the libraries will be installed to /usr/local/kde/lib, and k3b will try to find it's plugins in there. You have to add that dir either to you LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable, or to your /etc/ld.so.conf (and sometimes run the ldconfig program as root after this). Then k3b will recognise it's libs. If you add some extra options to k3b's configure (i.e.: --exec-prefix), then watch out, k3b will be looking for it's libs in the $PREFIX/lib, but the libs will be installed to $EPREFIX/lib. I've already mentioned that the default prefix is /usr/local/kde, thus you have to specify another argument --libdir=/usr/local/kde/lib, and then the libraries will be installed to the correct dir, and k3b will recognise them. shortcut....
Hello! Anybody knows how to set up a new hotkey for an external command under kde? For example: I want to bind Ctrl+F9 to the 'mount /cdrom' command. And I don't want to use the desktop icon for mounting the cdrom, instead I want two combos (Ctrl+F9, and Ctrl+F10) for mounting and umounting the cdrom. I found a config file in ~/.kde/share/config/khotkeys. It contains the hotkeys that I have set up under the kmenu. I added some entries for the above problem, but it didn't do anything. When I pushed the Ctrl+F9, khotkeys didn't run my command. Thank you! Daniel -- LeVA

kdm locale problem
Hi! I have a rather complicated problem with kdm, and I am from Hungary, but I will try to be as clear as I can :) Hope that someone could help me. So, let's start. Some background information: I am using Debian with woody (stable) packages. This comes with xfree 4.1.0. I have added an apt source for the new kde binaries (http://download.kde.org... etc...). I have installed kde 3.1.2 from that apt source. Everything is just fine :) But :) I have installed xfree 4.2.1, but not from Debian mirrors, instead from www.xfree86.org. I have downloaded the new binaries and installed it. Wow it is cool. Faster than the older 4.1.0. Unfortunately the kdm which came from the kde.org's apt source is not running. In the log it says there is some xdcmpwrapper problem. Oh well, I wrote to some of my friends, and they gave me an advice, that I should compile kdm from the kdebase sources to make it work with the new (4.2.1) xfree86. Ok. It took sooo long... :)) But when it finished I could not wait to try it. Yeah it is working. The kdm runs, and I am using 4.2.1 xfree. But you know in every good thing, there is something bad :) And here comes the real problem: If I start kde from kdm, I lose my localisation settings in kde. I am using hu_HU in locales. If I start kde from a console with startx, everything is Ok. But when I am starting kde from kdm, the programs that uses the translated .m4 or .po files, or just have some translated files, does not seems to be in hungarian language (ex.: xchat, licq). They are in english. In the kde control center, I can set up kdm to display the kdm buttons and messages (login, shutdown etc...) in hungarian. So that is ok. The problem is when I start kde from the kdm login manager, it seems, that kdm resets the localisations, and sets the lang to en, or en_US (or something like that). If I start a konsole from kde, and run this: echo $LANG I get hu_HU. That is why I can not understand this problem. It seems, that I am using hu_HU locales, but the kde programs, and other (for example Xchat, or Licq) programs doesn't recognise the hu_HU locales, and falls back to english. And this is all because I started kde from the kdm login manager, and not from console with startx. Is there some extra option which I must add when I configure kdebase to support other languages? Or it is autodetect everything? Or is there a kdm binary, which is working with 4.2.1 xfree (don't have the Xdcmpwrapper failure), and acts like the kde.org's kdm binary (is working with locales :) ? I hope you understand everything, and can help me. Please write me, if some info is missing, or you need to test something. Thanks for the answer! Daniel Levai -- LeVA
