Bug#585097: change update-notifier-kde from depends to recommends
Hi, I very strongly support Alan's proposal. Since update-notifier-kde logically depends on update-notifier-common, this implies that installing kde-standard to get a coherent standard desktop environment will 1) trigger periodic edits of /etc/motd (through /etc/update-motd.d/90-updates-available) 2) consequently sporadically slow down every first-login-of-the-day to the host 3) display a notification popup on the first-logged user's desktop about available updates, whether notifying this user is relevant or not. Such a behaviour might be sensible (albeit this is disputable) on a machine always used by a single user but it is quite unbearable on a real multi-user host where ordinary users do not have administrative privileges. Re: PolicyKit Authorization (System Settings) crashes every time
Hi, Peter Dahlberg a écrit : I would use checkinstall (checkinstall make install). It creates a .deb and installs it. Later you can remove it cleanly with dpkg. Please don't give such pieces of advice without a little bit more explanations. Checkinstall is not a debian developper. It does not know much about the debian policies and even less about possible filepath/packages/... possible conflicts/dependencies. It is basically nothing more than a wrapper around make install so that you can make [un]install by just calling dpkg instead of calling make by hand. I remember having helped a guy on the kdepim-users list for half a day one or two years ago. The guy had completely borked his system by repeatedly using checkinstall. Frankly, except in giving its users a false sense of security, I don't thinck checkinstall has any utility. A manual install in /usr/local or whichever safe place you want is a far better solution. Dependencies problem with kdepim 4.3.2 in squeeze
Hi, Today kdepim 4.3.2 seems to have migrated to testing but the systems cannot be realistically since there are some unmet dependencies for some apps. See for example http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/kaddressbook , libgnokii5 seems to be stalled in sid for some time. I apologize for not having investigated further since I'm not a pts expert. You have to choose here kde3's translations or kde4's, kde3 and kde4 have been never been co-installable. Ana, As you can see on this page http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=kspread , there are kde3 apps that are still available not only in squeeze but in sid, too. I wouldn't mind installing their KDE4 counterpart mind you, they're just not available. So, I consider it a bug that those applications are distributed with no l10n due to a packaging problem (as explained in details in my preceding messages). That doesn't mean I don't understand that the Debian Qt/KDE Maintainers are reluctant to fix such a packaging problem since eventually all of those kde3 apps shall be ported or taken out of debian. I have taken notes on the lack of manpower of the team and I do understand that this problem is regarded as (very) low-priority (as long as stable is not concerned and it is only a testing/unstable problem, at least). This is precisely why I asked for maintainers' advice here. I don't want to file an unecessary (for me) and cumbersome (for them) bug report (i.e. a bug that probably only time will fix). I've read Modestas message now and I think he's just saying that: too early to decide how to solve the problem. That's OK for me, really. After observing the debates on the list and elsewhere, I'm now convinced that the sooner we'll have only kde4 apps in the archive the better, so that everyone will be in position to fill just 'useful' bugs. RIP KDE3. Hope this clarify my question. pp -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org
Translations lost on upgrade to KDE4
Hi, Since I upgraded my squeeze laptop to KDE4 last week, the remaining KDE3 applications (e.g. kspread, ...) lost all of the translated strings that they took off from /usr/share/locale/XX/LC_MESSAGES/kdelibs.mo and similar generic kde3 .mo files (kio.mo, ...) since those file has been replaced by kde4 avatars of them. This concerns default menu titles for very common menus (File, ...) I can see two workarounds but I ain't got time to try them at the moment to evaluate the less worse: - do some symlinks in locale files, - fetch old kde-i18n-XX from lenny boxes and reinstall them in my squeeze laptop. If maintainers think that would deserve a bug report I'll fill it tonight. TIA for any piece of advice, pp -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

About kde3 in lenny
Hi, If I caught it correctly, it seems that freeze time is drawing near for lenny. May I signal that bug #457487 would make kdm not usable for a maybe not so small quantity of users (e.g. schools, ...). Really no one else with same problems out there? Yes, I ! (I did send you a private message some days ago but it must have ended in your spam box) Everything works like you described, the only difference is I'm running testing (but the bug appeared with 4:3.5.8.dfsg.1-2 too). I even reproduced it on different machines (all running testing). Didn't find any other workaround than to install gdm :-( I'm really short on time currently so I could not investigate much, but it seems this could be connected with http://bugs.kde.org/147790 and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=243560 (see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=450603 and the kdebase changelog) Installing consolekit did not change anything here.
