Hi, this bug is too old to investigate (mid 2016).
I wouldn't mind if you close it.

Thanks Martin,

I tried to increase the INNODB buffer as suggested with no success.
And btw, I do not have a performance problem, KMail is hanging forever.

Someone mentioned
https://cgit.kde.org/akonadi.git/commit/?h=Applications/
16.12=d42f94701f38c26cf3439727b50ee73cf0d09bee

Not sure how fast it will make it into Debian.
And I am not sure if this addresses my problem... I now have several emails
that produce the issue just by clicking on them.

KMail evolved from a once very stable and fast mail client to a almost
unusable one. Each iteration/bugfix comes with new bugs that are even worse
than the ones fixed. My conclusion after years of suffering: KMail does not
have enough dev resources - it is literally dead and meanwhile lacks many
features that other mail client had for years (one badly missing and requested
years ago: Saving encrypted messages unencrypted locally).

Tim (really frustrated at the moment)

Kmail often stuck at "Retrieving folder contents..."

2017-03-01 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Please wait...

No matter how long I wait, KMail is stuck.
I have to restart KMail.

My impression: It happens regular when changing folders too fast.

Of course I tried akonadictl (fsck + vacuum + restart) with no success.

Any idea where to look at or what to do ?

[SOLVED] Keyboard freeze once in a while

2017-01-04 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Hi,

a while ago I asked for help to fix sporadic keyboard freezes.

Since it happens just once every few days and a KDE logout/login fixes it, I
didn't invest much time into that issue. I also couldn't reproduce it... until
today :-)

Pressing the ALT or SHIFT key for ~10s reproduces the problem.
With that in mind, I found a solution here (https://ubuntuforums.org/
showthread.php?t=1943778).

I installed package 'xkbset' and disabled that 'feature' with
xkbset -a

Before that I tried to fix it by purging 'kaccessible' and 'kaccessibility'
packages (without success).

I still wonder why
Accessibility Features (AccessX) = On
was enabled by default (output of 'xkbset q') and how to disable that via
systemsettings.

Bug#3 Kmail can't delete certain emails

2016-11-07 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Some (random ?) emails can't be deleted nor flagged as 'read'.

tested akonadictl fsck / vacuum / restart in all combinations without luck.

After restarting sddm when struck by Bug#1, those emails were gone. I guess,
restarting Kmail would have done the same. Still not very nice.

Bug#2 Kmail copy with files not functional

link, not the file itself any more.

Any ideas how to fix that ?

keyboard randomly non-functional

2016-09-29 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Hi,

I experience a seldom sudden/random non-function of my keyboard (Debian SID,
amd64). The keyboard stops working, I can't even alt-ctrl-f1 or anything. When
it happens, I was just switching between windows via alt-tab.
Everything else but the keyboard is working.

I am typing ~8 hours a day and often switch between windows. The incident
sometimes happens 0-3x a day (sometimes I have like 3 days without it).

The first time it happened was ~3 months ago, but not really sure. I tested
with a different keyboard, but experienced the same problem after a while.

To get the keyboard working again, I just have to restart the KDE session (via
mouse/menu). When being asked for the password to login, the keyboard works
again.

Does anyone know which process is responsible for keyboard input or how to
track the issue down ?

All I see with 'dmesg' is
[ 5028.662608] traps: parcimonie-appl[7200] trap int3 ip:7fdd89a83241 sp:
7ffd10b916e0 error:0 in libglib-2.0.so.0.5000.0[7fdd89a33000+11]

7fcc24054471 sp 7fff5f1918c8 error 4 in libQt5Sql.so.
5.6.1[7fcc2403e000+4500

But I am absolutely not sure, if this relates to the keyboard or my restarting
the KDE session.

.xsession-errors is so full of crap (without date/time), looking at it gives
no result.

Any idea ?

Regards, Tim

I previously had 2 address books there. Now just "Personal Contacts" - having
two new contacts.

I have three red crosses there, at 'std.ics', 'std.vcf and at 'Personal
Calendar'.

No, just the two new contacts.

I have rolling backups plus one 'static' (replaced by a newer one manually
from time to time).

Anyways, I searched for *.vcf in ~/.kde and voila:
/usr/oms/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf
seems to hold all my contacts.

kaddressbook's 'import' function from the menu worked like a charm :-)

Thanks for your help - your mail inspired me to search for *.vcf.

Bug#827452: dolphin Mouse wheel scrolling speed is now painfully slow

2016-09-02 Thread Tim Ruehsen
There are many upstream bug reports describing the same (yes, I have been
struck as well).

People in https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=355410
suggest to remove the x11 libinput driver and instead install the x11 evdev
driver.

Here (Debian Sid), both packages were installed (xserver-xorg-input-libinput
and xserver-xorg-input-evdev).

Removing the first and restarting KDE solved the problem for me.

$ sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-input-libinput

That also removes two or three other packages, so be careful.

The KDE people say, it's likely a QT5 bug... just a hint for the maintainer.

No idea.

No, it is some internal protocol version.

So, you are on Sid/unstable ?
And you did
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade before ?

okular never stopped working here and I use it quite often.

$ dpkg -l '*okular*'
ii  libokularcore6  4:15.08.3-1  amd64
libraries for the Okular document viewer
ii  libokularcore7  4:16.04.2-1  amd64
libraries for the Okular document viewer
ii  okular  4:16.04.2-1  amd64
universal document viewer
ii  okular-extra-backends   4:16.04.2-1  amd64
additional document format support for Okular

But I guess libokularcore6 is orphaned and could be purged.

What exactly is your problem now ?

Here we talked about Sid/unstable having 16.04.x.

$ dpkg -l|egrep 'akonadi|baloo|kdepim'

I can't say anything about the 4.14. stuff except that it was working before I
went to 16.04.

It is just named "KMail Folders" - it is of course a Maildir resource.

I have indexing / searching working now, but is was very spooky to get
there... What I did:

I drag'ped all folders from "KMail Folders" to "Local Folders" (my idea
was to remove "KMail Folders" afterwards, thinking it was some kind of
'remnant' from upgrades). For a while it looked like it worked - all the
folders/messages appeared in "Local Folders" - even indexed !

But than, folders started to reappear in "KMail Folders". After a while I had
all my emails twice (checked this via 'ls' in ~/Mail/ and ~/.local/share/
local-mail/). After another while all folder from "Local Folders" where
gone... At least my emails are indexed now and searching works.
But I really transpired while fearing about my emails :-)

After moving the folders, the filter directories (I have ~120 filters)
automatically changed to the new "Local Folder" directory. Pretty cool, I
thought. Now that all folders where automagically moved back, the filter
directories are at "Please select a folder" nice stupid work for the
afternoon to select 120 directories one by one.

I will have the same issue at home, on my second Sid installation. But now I
know how to get indexing working - and I just have ~15 filters to work on :-)

Thanks for all your great hints & help and for your patience & time !

And just another thing to check:

In KMail under Accounts/Receiving I see "Local Folders" pointing to /usr/
oms/.local/share/local-mail/, Archive hook if off.
And I see "KMail Folder" pointing to /usr/oms/Mail, but doesn't show the
Archive tab.

Is that correct - do you have the same ?
I am not sure what this 'Local Folders' is for... it always stays empty.

Number of docs is by far too low.

'postlist' shows at least a reasonable number of items...

One thing I remember... someone said with IMAP accounts, you have to download
the emails, else indexing does not work.
My POP3 accounts have the hook at "Leave the messages on the server" and "Days
to leave messages" is set to 7. Is it possible that this setting accidentally
prevents indexing ? It looks like all new emails become indexed, but not the
old ones (though they are 'physically' downloaded and stay on disk).

Bug#832528: akonadi-server: Latest akonadi packages do not kick out old package baloo-utils

2016-07-26 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Package: akonadi-server
Version: 4:16.04.3-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

after installing the new 16.04 akonadi + kdepim stuff, I somehow
still had baloo-utils 4.14 installed which caused me (and others) some
headaches. Kmail indexing seems to be broken due to this - but I am still
investigating.

When I first run into the half-way update to 16.04, I had to forcefully
download/install packages from experimental. I definitely broke things but I
thought it was cleaned up by now. I still have package 'baloo-utils' installed
which contains akonadi_baloo_indexer.

$ apt-file search akonadi_baloo_indexer
baloo-utils: /usr/bin/akonadi_baloo_indexer

First I check the dependencies with apt-cache show. Onyl if these aren't
correct, I'll file a bug.

I'll do that after lunch (and after checking above) and report back.

It would be much more time efficient to send a prepared mail to you. You
decide
to open a bug at KDE or just to fix it. I prepared a relatively small email
that behaves like the original one. I send it to you via sendmail.

This directory contained three subdirs and there was not much data (< 1MB).

Thanks, good to know.
"akonadi_indexing_agent" can't be something complicated than... how can it
crash at all (and I saw crash often in the past). I couldn't find any -dbg
packages, so the backtrace is pretty worthless.

That renders KMail at least incomplete. It worked perfect for me until KDE4
came. From that point on it was getting worse and worse... If there was any
easy way to convert all those emails from the last 15 years into a halfway
working mail client I would do that instead of wasting my time with unloved
and unsupported crap. But that is OT, and I am not giving up yet.

I did some more testing. It looks like many emails+attachments are recognized
by KMail. The problematic ones (that had been ok before with kdepim 14)
contain the following relevant headers:

Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary=Apple-Mail-3--649023028
Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v1085)
X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.1085)

And this mime structure
--Apple-Mail-3--649023028
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
Content-Type: text/plain;
charset=iso-8859-1

--Apple-Mail-3--649023028
Content-Type: multipart/mixed;
boundary=Apple-Mail-4--649023027

--Apple-Mail-4--649023027
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
Content-Type: text/html;
charset=iso-8859-1

--Apple-Mail-4--649023027
Content-Disposition: attachment;
filename=30.wav
Content-Type: audio/wav;
x-mac-type=57415645;
x-mac-creator=4146534D;
x-unix-mode=0777;
name="30.wav"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

--Apple-Mail-4--649023027
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Content-Type: text/html;
charset=us-ascii

--Apple-Mail-4--649023027
Content-Disposition: attachment;
filename=40.wav
Content-Type: audio/wav;
x-mac-type=57415645;
x-mac-creator=4146534D;
x-unix-mode=0777;
name="40.wav"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

--Apple-Mail-4--649023027

--Apple-Mail-4--649023027--

--Apple-Mail-3--649023028--

Since I don't have any Apple devices, I can't help any further.
The mime structures seem to be ok - the new kdepim backend seems to have
(partial) problems with multipart/mixed.

Thanks Sandro !

Just installing (and rebooting) didn't make any difference.

Meanwhile, I removed ~/.local/share/baloo and hand-edited ~/.config/baloofilerc
(systemsettings seems to be buggy and doesn't save my changes). Basically I
added some exceptions and set first run=true.
Then I switched 'Enable File Search' in systemsettings off and on again.
After that, i see baloo_file and /usr/bin/baloo_file_extractor working... since
a few hours now (I let it run the night and we'll see tomorrow).

What meanwhile changed in the Kmail Folder Properties/Maintenance:
"Indexing" shows a hook at "Enable Full Text Indexing" and says "Indexed 1
item of this collection". Other folder already show some more indexed items...
but any progress here is extremely slow. Maybe because I have ten thousands of
emails, many have huge (binary) attachments.

Thanks for your help and I report on any progress.

Kmail: Attachments in wrong order

2016-07-25 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Just a small thing (but still sometimes annoying when sending many attachments
to a non-technical customer).

When selecting a range of files as attachments (e.g. 1.txt, 2.txt, 3.txt), they
appear in the attachment list in the reverse order (3.txt on top, 1.txt at
bottom). One can work around it, but it is not as it was for the last 15
years.

Kmail: "Save attachments" does not work

2016-07-25 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Right-click on a message with a bunch of attachments and selecting "Save
attachments" results in "Found no attachments to save".

The same goes when using the context menu within the message itself.

But the "Message structure" window shows me each attachment. And right-click
on the name of the file allows me to save it.

I regularly get messages with 30+ attachments that have to be installed...
currently I really have a bad time to save them one-by-one.

Does anyone knows a workaround ?

Regards, Tim

I am not sure. There is no package akonadi-search, also no utility (searched
with apt-file).

Do you mean
$ dpkg -l '*akonadisearch*'
ii  libkf5akonadisearchdebug5:amd64 16.04.2-2amd64
Akonadi search debug library
ii  libkf5akonadisearchpim5:amd64   16.04.2-2amd64
Akonadi search library

Should I manually install any of these ?
libkf5akonadisearchcore5
libkf5akonadisearchxapian5
libkf5akonadisearch-data
libkf5akonadisearch-bin

Re: KDEPIM ready to be more broadly tested

2016-07-25 Thread Tim Ruehsen
KMail indexing still doesn't work.

Switched Systemsettings:Workspace->Search->File Search off and on again. This
started baloo indexing for a while. But Folders in Kmail still report "Still
not indexed." (Folder:Properties->Maintenance). Hook is set at 'Enable Full
Text Indexing".

Also removed ~/.kde/share/config/baloorc and restarted akonadi. Without
success. Now:
$ cat ~/.kde/share/config/baloorc
[Akonadi]
agentIndexingVersion=4

Is there any packet missing or a trick to get it working ?

Re: Need help regarding experimental KDEPIM/Kmail

2016-07-08 Thread Tim Ruehsen
~40 minutes ago, the Sid dist-upgrade + reboot gave me back my beloved Kmail !

Thanks for all your help.

Some of first view glitches are
- akonadi crash (Kmail windows blank, 'akonadictl restart' fixed it)
- had to reenter all passwords for my mail accounts
- lots of display settings are lost (fonts, colors, layout), just small things
that take some time
- all signatures are shown as invalid or 'not enough information'

I'll wait a few days before starting to investigate deeper.

Regards, Tim

Bad luck, reboot didn't help. Same symptoms.

That's in Sid.

Thanks Brad !

I set Default-Release to experimental (and also pinned exp packages to a high value).

Somehow this version 'skipped' experimental and went directly into unstable :-)

'apt-get install -f' fixed a few things:

The following additional packages will be installed:
  kdepim-runtime kdepimlibs-data libakonadi-calendar4 libakonadi-kabc4 libakonadi-kcal4 libakonadi-notes4 libkalarmcal2 libkolab0v5
  libmailtransport4
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  accountwizard kdepim
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  kdepim-runtime libakonadi-calendar4 libakonadi-kabc4 libakonadi-kcal4 libakonadi-notes4 libkalarmcal2 libkolab0v5 libmailtransport4
The following packages will be upgraded:
  kdepimlibs-data

I guess I have to wait until kdepim/accountwizard/kdepin-runtime opackaging issues are resolved.

Kmail still is 'hanging around', showing the directories on the left side, empty white windows on the right and being busy with 'Preparing transmission from...'.

The communication with akonadi-server is still broken... But I'll try a reboot in a few minutes and report back.

Need help regarding experimental KDEPIM/Kmail

2016-07-07 Thread tim ruehsen
I missed that warning from Lisandro and now I am struck by Kmail not working (hanging) due to an akonadi-server update.

I went the way that Lisandro proposed: pulling in the kdepim packages from experimental (downloading each package and installing via dpkg -i).

Right now akonadi-server still doesn't run (so does the new kmail).

I am looking for help from someone who already did this transition.

Right now apt-get says:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 accountwizard : Breaks: kdepim-runtime (< 4:15.07.90~) but 4:4.14.10-2 is to be installed
 libkf5akonadicontact5 : Depends: kdepimlibs-data (= 4:16.04.2-2) but 4:16.04.1-1 is to be installed
 libkf5akonadimime5 : Depends: kdepimlibs-data (= 4:16.04.2-2) but 4:16.04.1-1 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

Several new packages (e.g. kamil) still depend on kdepim-runtime while accountwizard has a 'Replaces: kdepim-runtime'.

What did you do ? Forcefully remove kdepim-runtime via dpkg ?

Where can I find kdepimlibs-data="" ?

Any help is appreciated.

Tim

Bug#830119: akonadi-server: Akonadi fails to start after upgrade

2016-07-06 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Package: akonadi-server
Version: 4:16.04.2-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

after upgrading this morning, Kmail shows an empty window while being busy with
something.

Normally it does. But I have to do it 5-10 times a day - a bit annoying.

Before we invest too many thoughts into 4.x versions... What about kdepim from
experimental ? I tried to pull it in today, but too many KDE packages would
not resolve / would be removed.
I would really like to know if someone managed to pull it in and how. Maybe
the new versions have a few things fixed !?

How did you do that ?

5.4.2-2+b1 seems not to be available on
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/q/qtx11extras-opensource-src/

Even 5.5.3-1 is from 28.10.2015... so 5.4.2 has been removed from
/var/cache/apt/archives/ for a long time now.

I am a bit clueless right now. And I badly want Kate.

I have it working now, but I am not 100% sure what it was.
Yesterday I added to dirmngr.conf:
 hkp-cacert /usr/oms/.gnupg/sks-keyservers.netCA.pem

After restarting dirmngr (and other processes as well), nothing changed.
Today - after reboot this morning - the problem is gone away.
Maybe it was just the latest upgrades that made it ?

So here my .conf files from ~/.gnupg/:

Yes the key works with both gpg and gpg2:

Cryptography: Key not selectable (PGP key)

2015-12-08 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Since a few weeks I can't select my PGP key for signing / encryption (thus
signing and encryption do not work any more).

Basically the same problem in Kmail2 (Identities->Modify->Cryptography-
>Change) and in the Addressbook (Select Person, Crypto Settings, Change PGP
encryption key).

When I select my key it starts to flicker (~1-2x per Seconds) and the OK
button stays disabled. Within the address book I can work around it by
selecting any other key (OK Button becomes enabled) and than selecting my key
(OK Button stays enabled, flickering starts). Now the OK button works.

But in Kmail2 this work-around does not work since my key is the only one
displayed.

I already looked at .gnupg/*.conf, but can't see anything obvious.

Any ideas ?

Regards,

Tim Rühsen

I assume you already have checked dmesg and ~/.xsession-errors !?

I had a recent freeze on startup that I could solve by moving ~/.config/kwinrc
away and restarting the machine.

Because we (unstable and/or testing users) want it ASAP :-)

Breakages happen all the way, but you should be able to apply workarounds to
recover - in this case downgrading libqt5x11extras5.
If you don't want (or can't) do that, unstable (and maybe testing) is not a
good choice for you.

The 'brute force' method would be to use btrfs + snapshots before each upgrade
(e.g. done by a little script that automatically removes old shapshots).

That is the burden to unstable users - but it also is kind of fun.

Tim

Me too, I have unstable at work (ouch, don't you laugh at me, please) and
testing at home (so wife & kids don't run into too many problems).

Basically, I work on unstable. I am a positive character, that's why
challenges, work, life, everything is *fun* to me. Depends on how you define
fun, of course.
I agree on the *basically working* part. But your machine was always doing
that - just the desktop/ui-apps did not start.

$ reportbug ...

Also, please read again my previous email (about snapshots and/or
downgrading). These are just tools to help you and me in case of havoc - they
really help to keep frustration away.

Re: Kmail2 display garbled (after a while)

2015-10-12 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Hi Boris,

I got it again and I guess it has something to do with using Netbeans.

Huhh ? Yes, Netbeans creates many but small shared memory blocks.
I can't find any limit here for the number of shmem blocks nor for a max
memory usage. But somehow it seems limited to 4096 chunks.

I just experienced a garbled Kmail window (when opening a new window for a
reply). I quick check with ipcs in a console says:
$ ipcs -m|grep -c ^0x
4096

I closed Kmail and Netbeans, restarted Kmail and now:
$ ipcs -m|grep -c ^0x
8

I use the original Oracle Netbeans download, Version 8.0.2.
Well, maybe it is not Netbeans but simply Java (OpenJDK 8 here) - I can't say.
However, there seems to be a shmem limit since a few weeks that hasn't been
there before.

Any idea how to proceed ?

Tim

Hi Boris,

I didn't have that issue any more since a few days.

Kmail is pretty much in use each day and when I had this issue, I had it
several times a day (reboot, kdm stop/start, kmail stop/start didn't help
much).

As soon as the problem pops up again, I'll come back here.

Thanks for having a look !

Kmail2 display garbled (after a while)

2015-09-29 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Hi,

since I installed kde5 I have a kmail2 issue.

After a while the kmail2 display window becomes drawn unreadable.
See this screenshot:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_loju3MX2rTZlNOdDRxblVTWDg

Stopping and starting kmail does not help.
Stopping and starting kdm helps for a while (until it suddenly happens again).

I can't see anything obvious in 'dmesg' or .xsession-errors. Well I see lot's
of 'BadDrawable' messages, but these are not limited to kmail.

I am on Debian SID with latest dist-upgrade, have the problem with kernel 4.1
and 4.2 (didn't test any older kernels). Grafix is internal Intel i3 (Sandy
Bridge).

Any ideas how to work around that or how to pin the problem ?

Re: KDE5 Java SystemTray not supported

2015-09-21 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Thanks for your answers !

They gave me some insight and I started reading...

sni-qt is for QT4 only. Since I have a QT5.4 KDE (Debian unstable) and QT5.4
has the QPA-API (which replaces sni-qt), I should see my Tray Icon regarding
http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2014/06/where-are-my-systray-icons/.
But I don't.

Could anyone provide an Java example code that shows SNI / TrayIcon on QT >=
5.4 (using OpenJDK 7 or 8) ? I could and would amend my application.

KDE5 Java SystemTray not supported

2015-09-18 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Hi,

I just upgraded to KDE5 on unstable and immediately realized that my Java PBX
Client fails to start because SystemTray.isSupported() returns false.

I am using openjdk-8 packages.

My questions are
- is there a known work-around to start such Java apps within KDE5 ?
- where should the bug report go, kde or openjdk ?

Missing 'Desktop Search' in systemsettings

2014-07-01 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Hi,

when trying to search messages, KMail complains:

The Nepomuk semantic search service is not available. Searching is not
possible without it. You can enable it in System Settings.

I do miss the icon 'Desktop Search' in systemsettings, so I can't enable it.

Pressing on the 'Configure' button in KMail (New message Window) says:
The module to configure the semantic desktop system (Nepomuk) was not found

For me, it looks like everything is installed (nepomuk, akonadi, soprano,

KMail (KDE 4.2.2) indexing? again and again

2009-04-09 Thread Tim Ruehsen
I just migrated from kde 3.5 to kde 4.2.2 (unstable). My system is up-to-date.

From time to time, kmail eats up CPU, Disk I/O and memory while it seems to go
through all emails (~25.000 and ~4,5 GB). Started from konsole, kmail outputs
lines like:

kmail(6098)/kmail (storage internals) KMFolderMaildir::getDwString:
KDE_fopen(abs_file=
/usr/oms/Mail/.MailingLists.directory/Andere/cur/1239002674.5913.zKNVK:2,S ,
r+) == stream ==  0x9ae7668
kmail(6098)/kmail (storage internals) KMFolderMaildir::getDwString:
fclose(mIndexStream =  0x9ae7668 )

kmail(6098)/kmail (storage internals) KMFolderMaildir::getDwString:
KDE_fopen(abs_file=
/usr/oms/Mail/.MailingLists.directory/Andere/cur/1239009776.5913.15eQ9:2,S ,
r+) == stream ==  0x9a2c7a0
kmail(6098)/kmail (storage internals) KMFolderMaildir::getDwString:
fclose(mIndexStream =  0x9a2c7a0 )

I already stopped kmail, removed all index files, started again. Kmail than
rebuilds the index files - that's what i expect. after a few minutes pausing,
kmail seems to start again... pausing... starting...etc.
I have the 'feeling' that something triggers the reindexing, like a new
incoming email or searching for an email.
When I say 'reindexing', i am not shure if this is really what kmail does.

Does anyone has an idea how to switch this behaviour off, since it is a killer
(kmail is almost unusable when doing so) ?.

Regards, Tim

Hi,

maybe it is not settings-notification what you want.
I use filters to automatically move emails into folders (each of my customers

In some cases i have to check if these emails contain special subject

to do so, i create a filter based on 'From' and 'Subject', add actions 'move

Re: Flash in Konqueror

2007-01-30 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Hi,

same here (latest SID). As far as I remember, youtube never worked. Where the
video should be played the text 'Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off
or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player' is shown.

Java and Javascript are enabled globally.

Packages that are installed:
libflash-mozplugin
konqueror-nsplugins
konq-plugins
flashplugin-nonfree

In konqueror settings-plugins there are the following plugin search
directories:
/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/
/usr/lib/netscape/plugins-libc6
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
$MOZILLA_HOME/plugins

maybe something is wrong or missing???

Obviously konqueror-nsplugins puts its .so files into /usr/lib/kde3.
But adding this directory to the search list causes 'search for plugins' to
crash.

Any ideas?

kde 3.5.5: 'large' gap between menu/tree/list lines

2006-11-01 Thread Tim Ruehsen
hi,

since a few days, i find the 'gaps' between two lines of text are pretty large
(too large for my favor). affected are menus (including kde start menu) and
trees (like kmail directory tree on the left side).

it came up a the same time on my two different machines (both have SID
up-to-date). one of them having a resolution of 1024x800, the other
1280x1024.

the affect is annoying since i have less information on screen - i am forced
to use the scrollbars more often than before.

Q: where is the 'screw' to modify the gap?
or will it be fixed in the future?

kdm/xorg7 Xsession issue?

2006-05-05 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Hi,

today, logins to kdm failed... after typing in user/pw and hitting login, the
login screen reappeared (for all users). No hints in /var/log. After doing
all of the well known work-arounds I found the problem:

/etc/kd3/kdm/Xsession sources /etc/X11/Xsession in it's last line.
This failed cause I removed /etc/X11/Xsession a long time ago. I did this
because I somewhere found a hint/message to do so, because /etc/X11/Xsession
has been replaced by /etc/kde3/kdm/Xsession.

So something changed with xorg7 regarding Xsession? Or did I really mistook
something which convinced me to remove /etc/X11/Xsession?
Should I put this into the wiki?

Please tell me your opinion.

Interesting... I did a ps -ef|grep kded to find kded processes. The only thing
i found where drkonqi processes with some string 'kded' as command line

 Alternatively you might want to install the 'avahi-daemon' package which
will prevent kded from crashing.

I don't want to. I already have ~500 daemons running:-(, ~480 with
functionality not needed by me... but they are all somehow entangled.
But I close my eyes, hit return and install it. One more for heavens sake. I
really don't need automatic printer detection and the like. 'hope this makes
the system more stable...

Don't take that to serious, i appreciate your advice.

Re: Kmail 1.9.1 (KDE 3.5) 'save attachments' productivity loss

2006-01-24 Thread Tim Ruehsen
 Ah, now I think I understand your situation. I'm curious what happens when
 you want to save 1.vox, 2.vox and 3.vox to a directory that already
 contains 2.vox. Does it automatically overwrite? If so, that's bad. I'd
 file a minor bug against that. Or does it pop up a dialog asking what you
 want to do. If it's the latter, then it should give you the option to
 rename the old file, as well as the new. If it did, would that suffice?

For every single file which already exists you will be asked to overwrite it.
Your only choices are 'overwrite' and 'cancel' (which should be named
'skip'). You can't move the old file out of the way (e.g. as backup).
Even if you could: you have to do this for every single file. In the standard
file dialog, you just mark as many files as you want and take action on all
of them (e.g. move them into a different dir, delete etc.).

Also, the directory dialogic looks like 1:1 copy from MS Windows, where this
kind of dialog makes me angry for years now. No, not really angry. But it
convinces me that MS employees do not use Windows as a productive desktop
system. Or they are just not productive ? ;-)

But after all: the directory dialog just takes away functionality without
compensating that with anything else. either the directory dialog will be
enhanced (which seems to be stupid) or the file dialog could be enhanced to
just show directories (switchable off/on in the menu).

I hate to file a bug to bugs.kde.org. They like to entangle one into endless
discussions... volunteers?

 Although it would be nice to get others to do the dirty work, it's not the
 way it works ... mostly. Filing bugreports is the only reliable way to
 reach most of KDE developers.

Yes, definitely. 'Volunteers?' was meant to be a little bit sarcastic. I did
not expect someone to shout 'here!'.

This thread has been started to see if i am the only one who complains, if
there are work-arounds and to collect some arguments.

Kmail 1.9.1 (KDE 3.5) 'save attachments' productivity loss

2006-01-23 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Hi,

I just updated to KDE 3.5 / KMail 1.9.1. When selecting 'save attachments' on
a mail with 2 or more attachments, a directory selector/requester pop's up.
It asks me for a directory to save the files into. BUT:

* I can't access my bookmarked directories. This makes the process of
selecting a directory much slower.

* I can't see any files in the selected directory. This cuts me off from:
  - a quick view into the directory (my decision to create a new directory
might be based on the contents).
  - removing/renaming single files before I press OK (for saving).

Since I use this feature up to several times a day, this loss of productivity
really annoys me.

Is there a switch to enforce getting a file selector?
If not: Would this be more a wishlist item or a minor/normal bug?
Are there any other people who dislike the new 'feature'?

Regards, Tim

 Regarding renaming or removing single files, how would you know which file
 you're renaming or removing? I mean, which of the files that you're
 saving?
I was not talking about the files to save but about the files that are already
in the directory which I want to save the new files into. E.g. I have
attachments 1.vox 2.vox 3.vox and want to save it into directory X. Before
KDE 3.5/Kmail 1.9.1 I got this 'file selector' widget, where I could see the
already existing files. In this example, let's say there is already an 2.vox.
I could directly (within the widget), rename it to 2.vox.old or decide to let
it be overwritten by the new 2.vox (or whatever).

 Out of curiosity, what did it work like before?
See above.

Thanks for your answer, Justin.

 works here.
On my second machine, which is a different hardware, but more or less a copy
of the first one, it works. But not on this machine here. I wonder if this a
xorg/x11, qt or kde issue? I am still looking for a hint to reenable it.
Though pressing left and right button does it (Emulate3Buttons=true in
xorg.conf).

 AFAIK that is not supposed to work at all. Ctrl-C also stands for
 interrupting a running shell command and Ctrl-V according to the menu is
 also not mapped to paste.

 In my mapping which should be standard mapping I can use Shift-Insert for
 inserting clipboard contents. There is no keyboard shortcut for copying
 tough. But you can set one in the shortcut dialog (dunno if it is called
 exactly like that cause I use KDE in german language).

 Well I tried it, you can even set Ctrl-C for copy and Ctrl-V for paste,
 but then you can't use Ctrl-C for interrupting running shell commands
 anymore. Thus I recommend setting different shortcuts just like the
 Konsole warning requester that pops up when you try to set Ctrl-Key
 combinations recommends, too.

 I just use Alt-C and Alt-V for now. These may conflict with some other
 keyboard settings, but as far as I remember I never used Alt-C and Alt-V
 in Konsole before, so thats fine for me for now.

 The Amiga has special Amiga keys and uses Left Amiga-C and Left Amiga-V
 for copy and paste. Thus there is no conflict between Ctrl-C and the
 keyboard combination for cutpaste. Maybe one can set copy and paste to
 Left Windows key-C and Left Windows key-V (just place a pinguin on
 those), but I do not have these on my IBM ThinkPad T23 keyboard.

Thanks for your ideas about ctrl-c and ctrl-v. You are right, I never used
ctrl-c for copying and really need it for interrupting things. I will find a
solution for that, thanks.

Tim

That's it. Now it looks as before;-)

 I think the main user-visible change in fontconfig was that freetype now
 defaults to using the autohinter module (you can comment it out
 in /etc/fonts/local.conf by putting !-- and -- around the match
 target=font ... autohint ... /match lines.)  I don't know what the
 KControl module does to enable/disable sub-pixel rendering, but you can also
 comment out that section of the local.conf file, too, if it is uncommented.

 Relevant portion of changelog:
* fontconfig.templates: default the autohinter to true, but keep the
  subpixel rendering to false. This is because the bytecode interpreter
  (previous default) renders very badly on TFT screens, and the subpixel
  rendering looks bad on non-RGBA screens (closes: #268321).

- stop kdm/x11, remove all tmp kde and start kdm/x11 again
- take one crashing app, find out its packet and reinstall it (remove it
from /var/cache/apt/archives first)
- find the packets it depends on, reinstall them (remove them
from /var/cache/apt/archives first)
- do not prelink (i had a problem with qtlibs just a few weeks ago, crashing
all KDE apps)

broken packages happened to me twice. after downloading and installing again
it was fine. the worst thing is, you have to guess which packet it is. in

Kate sorts file list, but shouldn't

2004-04-15 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Hi,

My file list gets sorted after starting Kate but the 'sort file list
alphabetical' is OFF (no cross in the checkbox).

Does anyone knows a workaround for this?

Tim

Kate: How to set the charset to a fixed default value?

2004-01-16 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Hi,

when opening text files with german umlauts (eg. in Comments of C source
code), kate sets the charset not to iso-8859-1(5) or compatible but to some
kyrillic charset. After saving the file, all umlauts are converted into some
kyrillic chars - sometimes just to a question mark.

If I( do not forget to) manually set the charset to iso-8859-1 or iso-8859-15
after opening a file, everthing is fine. But how can I say kate to open all
files with iso-8859-15 by default?

kdm: dpkg: error processing kdm (--configure)

2004-01-06 Thread Tim Ruehsen
Hi,

since a while I have this problem:
blitz-lx:# apt-get dist-upgrade
... bla ...
Setting up debconf-utils (1.4.3) ...

Errors were encountered while processing:
 kdm
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

The same here:
blitz-lx:# apt-get -f install kdm
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
kdm is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0B of archives.
After unpacking 0B of additional disk space will be used.
Setting up kdm (3.1.4-1) ...
dpkg: error processing kdm (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 30
Errors were encountered while processing:
 kdm
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

The same here:
blitz-lx:# dpkg-reconfigure kdm
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: kdm is broken or not fully installed

Even removing and installing again does not help...

How can I extract the post-installing script and watch it?
Or does anyone has an instant solution?

Tim

 Have you installed cupsys, kdeprint, libcupsys2?

All of it. After some help via PM, it looks like 'kprinterd' does not want to
start (the libraries and .desktop file is where it belongs). There seem to be
some issues in bugs.debian.org that describe my problem - i am not sure if it
fits 100%.
First of all, I use PDF export from OOO. The next step might be direct cups
pdf filter. And after that I wait for bug fixes;-)

Thanks.
