kernel modules are not an issue, because they are built into my kernel and the
same error appeared in sarge with no consequences.
The "No chain/target/match by that name" is new and is a mistery to me. If I
apply the firewall, the internet connection gets lost.

Thanks to all: I did think of it but in kde the mouse right click button menu

After reading your replies it occurred to me to think:

Ok, after some experiments I have found that the above problem appears ONLY if
the "read from others" permission is set to _not_ granted; i.e. for lilo.conf
file:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4323 2005-03-25 21:00 /etc/lilo.conf
works correctly; _but_ :
-rw-r- 1 root root 4323 2005-03-25 21:00 /etc/lilo.conf
is regarded as "read-only" by the file manager in super user mode.
It appears to be quite an akward bug which would be annoying to have in sarge!
Is it only me experiencing this ?!

differences between xscreensaver kde-screensaver

2005-02-24 Thread Mauro Darida
Anyone willing to explain the difference between the xscreensaver and the kde
screensaver in the appearence menu?
I am asking that because they behave differently in regard to opengl
animations under DRI. For example atlantis and endgame, which are present in
both, on my system are working only from the xscreensaver.
If I run atlantis from xscreensaver I get a honest 17 FPS but if I run
atlantis from kde-screensaver it is a pain with only 1.97 FPS (both in full
screen 1024x768).
I cannot understand why the difference.

java fails in konqueror 3.3

I cannot make java work under konqueror 3.3 Everything seems ok with java
support installed but konqueror just shows a blank screen with a java code
test. If I enable "java console" and "report errors" in java konqueror
settings I get a console with:
Unable to load JSSE SSL stream handler, https support not available

Root has to kill the console to get rid of it. Maybe a package is missing? It
is not true there is not https support, there is. I don't think that this

dsniff is not in woody, which I use. I tried tcpdump during connection:
#tcpdump -w istrpwd
#strings istrpwd
but it showed nothing similar to a password of mine.
I can't believe the only way is a C compilation as previously suggested,
which is a bit beyond my experience (ok, I did compile kernels, but with
make-kpkg is a different story).

Hi,
does anybody know whether one can run a presentation automatically in
kpresenter (kde 3.1.2) ?
Please reply to me too since I am not sure whether I am linked to the list or
not (mail server mess).

Thanks, I tried but unfortunately it seems that atitvout works only from the

I have a laptop which sometimes I need to leave unguarded for a short time. I
tried the lock screen but discovered it doesn't lock anything because anyone
with keyboard access can open a new X-session. Then I tried to disable the
turn off option for a normal user from the kde login manager (thinking I
could leave the login screen while I was out) but discovered it disables the
turn off option on logout too. So my problem is unsolved...

Re: konqueror java support fails again - suggestion

2003-05-24 Thread Mauro Darida
I have read somewhere about two fixes in java support. Maybe they can explain
my failure to make java working in konqueror:
1. conflicts with the compiler: is kde 3.1.1 for woody compiled with gcc2.95?
Java must be compiled with the same gcc version...is my blackdown j2re1.3 for
woody compiled with gcc2.95?
2. In order to make blakcdown debs working with Mozilla a soft link is needed:
ln -s /usr/lib/j2se/1.3/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
should I do something similar ?? Or should I throw away this non-GPL f**
language from Sun people ??

I remember the sun install script said it would install everything in
/usr/local/ so I have simply deleted the /usr/local/j2re1.4.1/. Anyway how
can I check out any other symlinks ? I am a bit discouraged: everyone but me
seems to have java working on woody:-((

java - status is auto.
 link currently points to /usr/lib/j2se/1.3/bin/java
/usr/lib/j2se/1.3/bin/java - priority 1311
 slave java.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/java.j2se13.1.gz
Current `best' version is /usr/lib/j2se/1.3/bin/java.

kde 3.1.1 login manager

2003-05-20 Thread Mauro Darida
hello,
I was wondering how to remove the turn off computer option during login of a
normal user but allowing a normal user to turn off computer on logout. If in
control center login manager menu I say that only root can do a turn off then
kde removes turn off for users during BOTH login and logout. Does anybody
have a solution ?

Ehm, maybe you didn't read my msg entirely...I say, I CHANGED java machine and
installed the one from BLACKDOWN, here is may apt source:
deb ftp://ftp.tux.org/pub/java/debian woody main non-free
and it makes Konqueror to crash. I do not think using the absolute path should
be an issue here, shouldn't it?
If it works, it should work both from the symlink or the absolute path, it
doesn't matter.

konqueror java support fails again

2003-05-16 Thread Mauro Darida

hello all,
thanks for your answers on my problem. I put in Konqueror:
path to java executable: /usr/local/j2re1.4.1/bin/java
and the previous error disappeared, but when trying a java application I only
got :' loading applet ' and nothing more.
I tried a different java machine, installing debian package j2re1.3 from
blackdown, and the result is different but equally useless: I get a konqueror
crash. My path to java executable is now: /usr/lib/j2se/1.3/bin/java.
ciuff ciuff the little train...

konqueror java support fails

2003-05-09 Thread Mauro Darida
hello all,
after many efforts I must say I cannot make konqueror of kde 3.1.1 to use
java. I have read the konqueror java faq. I have the debian packages kdejava
and kdebindings-java installed, plus j2re 1.4.1 from Sun tar.gz binary
installed. Also in Konqueror->settings->java&javascript->path to java
executable: /usr/local/j2re1.4.1/bin/ and "java globally" enabled. I get the
following message trying to load a java application:
error: java executable not found
Any help will be appreciated...

I have noticed that only a mailing-list of mine have threads support. The
others (including this one, debian-kde) show no threads support and the kmail
expand all threads command has no effect on these. Is it some bad

kpackage errors in kde 3.1.1 under woody stable

2003-04-29 Thread Mauro Darida
hello,
after upgrading from kde 3.0.2 to kde 3.1.1 my kpackage does not work
properly. If am root it does not install anything (I get exec:not found, I
suspect for some reason it cannot find the path to dpkg). If I am normal user
it does install (after prompting the root password) but making huge windows
which get outside the monitor screen. In any case (root or user) I cannot mark
any package.
It worked flawlessy under kde 3.0.2...Any clue ?
