Package: kdm
Version: 4:3.2.2-1
Severity: normal

In the out-of-the-box configuration of 'kdm', the Start New Session
feature found in the Lock/Logout-Applet and in the KDE start menu is
missing.

The source of the problem are commented out entries in
'/etc/kde3/kdm/Xservers', which looks as follows after the package has
been installed:

--8-
[...comments...]

:0 local@tty1 /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp vt7
#:1 local@tty2 reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp :1 vt8

#:3 local@tty4 reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp :3 vt10
#:4 local@tty5 reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp :4 vt11

[...more comments...]
-8---

The additional server lines (at least one) ':1', ':2', ... must be
uncommented in order for the Start New Session feature to work.

This should be the standard setup for the 'kdm' package.

(The feature is also missing in the most recent 'kdm' package from
'unstable', which I have verified by hand.)

Cheers,
  Sigi

Trinity/KDE3

2013-05-22 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Hi again,

is there a chance of ever seeing Trinity in Debian?

AFAIK they were working (upstream) on getting it to
be usable with Qt4, which is in Debian, and possibly
coëxist with KDE4 (or at least be able to coëxist in
the archive though the user would have to choose which
one to install).

This would help a bit with the Kontact/KDEPIM Enterprise problem.

Thanks,

Package: konqueror
Version: 4:3.5.9.dfsg.1-6
Severity: important

According to Apt, I have nearly 337,000 files installed on my 250-GB hard disk.
At an unknown time in the past, I noticed that konqueror is not searching for
files correctly on my entire hard disk. Evidence: When I tell it to search for
a file I know is there from /, it will typically come back in less than 10
seconds, empty handed. If, OTOH, I tell it to search just one directory tree
such as home/ or usr/, it will take many minutes and probably will find the
file.

For this reason, tonight I did a search using two panes of the program
simultaneously. I tried to stop the search and restart it. Unfortunately, the
program crashed. Here is a backtrace from the crash:

Severity for KDE3 / Qt3 removal reminder bugs

2011-02-26 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Julien Cristau wrote:

 Care to elaborate?

As I understand it:

The Qt 3 part is a red herring. Bugs blocking removal of Qt 3 really
should _not_ be release critical as long as there is someone willing
to maintain Qt 3 itself. I'm not aware of an RFA, so...

As for the KDE 3 part: to avoid user confusion and maintenance hassle,
including KDE 3 in wheezy (at least unless someone else comes in and
shows interest and competence at maintaining the beast) is not
something the KDE maintainers consider an option. So packages which
only work with KDE 3 need to be removed or ported to KDE 4.

Those packages are mostly being removed already. As long as it gets
taken care of quickly, I don't personally mind. And some people at
#debian-qt-kde seemed to mind my meddling a lot.

The status of KDE 3 removal is being tracked at

 http://wiki.debian.org/kdelibs4c2aRemoval

and

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?users=debian-qt-kde@lists.debian.org;tag=kde3libs-removal

I didn't get a clear answer about what the preferred severity is for
these bugs on IRC, so my reaction is to step away quietly... But
given clear answers, I'd be glad to clean up my mess.

Hope that helps,
Jonathan

Hi Julien!

Please, see http://wiki.debian.org/kdelibs4c2aRemoval and
http://wiki.debian.org/qt3-x11-freeRemoval on how we were tracking each of
this issues.

I hope we will be sending a mail to debian-devel about the qt3 status soon.

Kinds regards, Lisandro.

Package: kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4

As far as I understand, lenny kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4 package is supposed to
be compatible with lenny's KDE3 desktop.

However, /usr/bin/kstart from kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4 misbehaves.

I like to run 'xload' embedded into KDE's panel.
To start it, I use the follwoing command:

kstart --windowclass XLoad --tosystray /usr/X11R6/bin/xload -bg black -fg green
-hl red -update 1 -nolabel

This used to work until I installed okular package (from lenny), which pulled
kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4 by dependences.

Now the above does not work as expected.
Instead, it causes bad misconfiguration of running session - all windows are
moved to the current virtual desktop, panel no longer exists on desktop other
than current. Also kstart process does not terminate, and xload
is started as a normal window.

Restoring kdebase-bin-kde3 makes start working again. But removes okular...

There is no newer version of package in question for lenny. Sorry.

KDE 3 and KDE SC 4 are no longer interchangeable since 4.2.2. This is no

Package: kdm
Version: 4:4.3.4-4

For a long time one of my old systems that had been upgraded from KDE3
to KDE4 suffered from a visually broken KDM login screen.

By removing two old KDE3 theme packages that were left installed,
despite the upgrade. to KDE4, the KDM greeter now displays correctly,
similar to how systems installed with KDE4 from the start.

Apparently KDM in KDE4 interacts with these old KDE3 KDM themes in a
visually bad way (while still allowing logins OK).

The two packages that needs to be removed (conflicted) are:

   kde-kdm-themes
   kdmtheme

KDE4 itself works fine. Error message is as followed:
process 5097: arguments to dbus_move_error() were incorrect, assertion
(dest) == NULL || !dbus_error_is_set ((dest)) failed in file dbus-errors.c

Thats not true you can allways download the *-dbg packages so you can use the
 complete debuginfo.

I had already tried that (before asking to the list) but it did not work. After
recompiled deb package with --enable-debug=full added
to debian/rules, then installed them, i'm able I get the debug info.

Are you building with DebugSymbols enabled.
if not just pass -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Debugfull when you initiate your cmake
 configuration.

Oh yes, that works!
It means kdebugdialog is useless if binary packages from debian
repository are used.

Many thanks.

KDE Packaging Bugs and plans on the KDE3 to KDE4 transition

2009-12-01 Thread Andreas Marschke
Hi,

I'm planning to do a Klassroom on the KDE forums and mentor some of the new
contributors towards helping to package and create new packages for KDE on
debian.
I had seen that you have some tasks still open for the transission to KDE4 on
the wiki. If this list of packaging issues is still extensible with
smaller/larger problems I would be glad if you could update it for the
students sake.
It should also be possible for the students to post new packages to the debian
experimental/testing repositories. could you give me a small rundown on what
they will need for this?

Sincerely ,

Andreas Marschke.

Hello

I'm planning to do a Klassroom on the KDE forums and mentor some of the
new contributors towards helping to package and create new packages for
  KDE on debian.
Good idea, I'd like to help on such a klassroom if you need. But I think we
need more work in bug triaging / fixing / testing than packaging (the big
work is already done). But I don't speak for the whole team.

I had seen that you have some tasks still open for the transission to KDE4
on the wiki. If this list of packaging issues is still extensible with
smaller/larger problems I would be glad if you could update it for the

Can you please tell me what wiki page you are talking about ?

rundown on what they will need for this?
To upload to the Debian archive, you must go through a Debian Developer
(who will sponsor the upload). We have some in the team if it's necessary to
upload.

I think we should meet on IRC (xve...@freenode or w...@debian, or directly on
#debian-qt-...@debian) to discuss further how it can be done.

We have a patch ready in our svn, we are just waiting for some packages

We are doing it a bit differently than how ubuntu is doing it.

And we have plenty of time until freeze in march.

Bug#550605: Kaboom: fails to migrate KDE3 desktop to KDE4 correctly

2009-10-11 Thread Nick Leverton
Package: kaboom
Version: 1.1.2
Severity: normal

I have a KDE 3.5.10 Lenny desktop. I also have a Sid virtual machine
running KDE 4.3.2 as of today. I mounted my 3.5.10 $HOME in the Sid VM
underneath an aufs overlay. I wanted to see if KDE 4.3 2 is ready for
what I need it for.

My use case here is an existing KDE3 user wants to upgrade to KDE4, and
to have her desktop, with its applications and short cuts, immediately
available for use, without needing to wholly recreate it by hand.

First time I logged into the VM as myself, it was essentially an upgrade
from Lenny 3.5.10 to Sid 4.3.2. I found that there were a number of
features of my desktop which were not present after conversion.

First off I have read the thread about desktop migration and am satisfied
with having my ~/Desktop shown as a transparent folder. I can work with
that and no doubt will find even better ways to arrange it in due course.
However,

1. My wallpaper was not setup under KDE4 by kaboom. It is a simple jpg
underneath my $HOME but kaboom discarded this setting.

2. My kicker buttons were largely forgotten.
   http://www.leverton.org/images/Software/kde-359-toolbar.png is my
KDE3 kicker main panel. Buttons and pplets on it are (left to right):
   K Menu
   Show desktop button
   Konsole profiles button
Kfmclient shortcut with filebrowsing profile in $HOME
   Kfmclient shortcut with webbrowsing profile
   Kbookmarks menu button
   Kcontrol menu button
   Application shortcut to mutt
   Application shortcut to trn
   Application shortcut to /usr/bin/eject
   Application shortcut to virt-manager

   Taskbar

   Klipper Applet
   System Monitor Applet
   System Tray Applet
   Lock/Logout Applet
   Clock Applet

The following from the above were nowhere on my taskbar or even my
   desktop after kaboom ran:

http://www.leverton.org/images/Software/kde-431-toolbar-after-conversion-from-359.png
   Konsole profiles button
Konqui shortcut to to $HOME with filebrowsing profile
Konqui shortcut with default (webbrowsing) profile
   Kcontrol menu button
   Application shortcut to mutt
   Application shortcut to trn
   Application shortcut to /usr/bin/eject
   Application shortcut to virt-manager

System Load Viewer applet (direct replacement for old System Monitor)
   Lock/Logout applet

A number of my other resident and autostarted applets, visible in the
KDE3 system tray, also did not start under KDE4. But I will do more
testing on that and open a separate bug with specifics.

3. My window shortcuts were wholly forgotten. My custom KDE3 kwin
shortcut scheme is based on the KDE 3-modifier scheme with some
   additions:
 Win+up = maximise vertically
 Win+right = maximise horizontally
 Win+M = minimimise
 Win+S = shade
 Win+V = move
I hoped that these at least would have been translated across since
I use them many times per day.

My xbb mappings were also not applied. In KDE3 I have enable keyboard
layouts turned off (since my xorg.conf specifies the keyboard layout)
but I have enable xkb options turned on, in order that I can use
the right win-key for Compose. In KDE4 it seems that I cannot have
xkb enabled at all unless I also set up a keyboard layout overriding
the default. Happily, my Compose key setting *was* translated,
   but just not enabled.

It seems that my national keyboard layout and my compose key are
not applied even after being setup by hand, but I'll raise that on
debian-kde since it is not apparently related to kaboom.

I can't see kaboom in KDE bugzilla so I haven't been able to check if
any of these are known bugs - they're not in Debian BTS though AFAICS.

Apols if any of them are due to aufs but I can't afford any downtime
at all on my main desktop. However since I can wipe the aufs overlay
I can re-run any tests if needed. Aufs is used in Debian Live systems
so I hope it is a fair test.

Package: kaboom
Version: 1.1.2
Severity: normal

I have a KDE 3.5.10 Lenny desktop. I also have a Sid virtual machine
running KDE 4.3.2 as of today. I mounted my 3.5.10 $HOME in the Sid VM
underneath an aufs overlay. I wanted to see if KDE 4.3 2 is ready for
what I need it for.

My use case here is an existing KDE3 user wants to upgrade to KDE4, and
to have her desktop, with its applications and short cuts, immediately
available for use, without needing to wholly recreate it by hand.

First time I logged into the VM as myself, it was essentially an upgrade
from Lenny 3.5.10 to Sid 4.3.2. I found that there were a number of
features of my desktop which were not present after conversion.

First off I have read the thread about desktop migration and am satisfied
with having my ~/Desktop shown as a transparent folder. I can work with
that and no doubt will find even better ways to arrange it in due course.
However,

1. My wallpaper was not setup under KDE4 by kaboom. It is a simple jpg
underneath my $HOME but kaboom discarded this setting.

2. My kicker buttons were largely forgotten.
   http://www.leverton.org/images/Software/kde-359-toolbar.png is my
KDE3 kicker main panel. Buttons and pplets on it are (left to right):
   K Menu
   Show desktop button
   Konsole profiles button
Kfmclient shortcut with filebrowsing profile in $HOME
   Kfmclient shortcut with webbrowsing profile
   Kbookmarks menu button
   Kcontrol menu button
   Application shortcut to mutt
   Application shortcut to trn
   Application shortcut to /usr/bin/eject
   Application shortcut to virt-manager

   Taskbar

   Klipper Applet
   System Monitor Applet
   System Tray Applet
   Lock/Logout Applet
   Clock Applet

The following from the above were nowhere on my taskbar or even my
   desktop after kaboom ran:

http://www.leverton.org/images/Software/kde-431-toolbar-after-conversion-from-359.png
   Konsole profiles button
Konqui shortcut to to $HOME with filebrowsing profile
Konqui shortcut with default (webbrowsing) profile
   Kcontrol menu button
   Application shortcut to mutt
   Application shortcut to trn
   Application shortcut to /usr/bin/eject
   Application shortcut to virt-manager

System Load Viewer applet (direct replacement for old System Monitor)
   Lock/Logout applet

A number of my other resident and autostarted applets, visible in the
KDE3 system tray, also did not start under KDE4. But I will do more
testing on that and open a separate bug with specifics.

3. My window shortcuts were wholly forgotten. My custom KDE3 kwin
shortcut scheme is based on the KDE 3-modifier scheme with some
   additions:
 Win+up = maximise vertically
 Win+right = maximise horizontally
 Win+M = minimimise
 Win+S = shade
 Win+V = move
I hoped that these at least would have been translated across since
I use them many times per day.

My xbb mappings were also not applied. In KDE3 I have enable keyboard
layouts turned off (since my xorg.conf specifies the keyboard layout)
but I have enable xkb options turned on, in order that I can use
the right win-key for Compose. In KDE4 it seems that I cannot have
xkb enabled at all unless I also set up a keyboard layout overriding
the default. Happily, my Compose key setting *was* translated,
   but just not enabled.

It seems that my national keyboard layout and my compose key are
not applied even after being setup by hand, but I'll raise that on
debian-kde since it is not apparently related to kaboom.

I can't see kaboom in KDE bugzilla so I haven't been able to check if
any of these are known bugs - they're not in Debian BTS though AFAICS.

Apols if any of them are due to aufs but I can't afford any downtime
at all on my main desktop. However since I can wipe the aufs overlay
I can re-run any tests if needed. Aufs is used in Debian Live systems
so I hope it is a fair test.

KDE3 apps under KDE4

Is there any easy way of configuring style and colors of KDE3 apps (like
kaffeine, k3b, basket,...) under KDE4 now that kcontrol is gone?

Is there any easy way of configuring style and colors of KDE3 apps (like
kaffeine, k3b, basket,...) under KDE4 now that kcontrol is gone?

 Regards,

No. When we still had separate ~/.kde and ~/.kde4 directories for the
configuration files, it was possible to change manually the
configuration files in ~/.kde in order to change the look of kde3
apps. Now it is not possible because the same files are used by kde4.
As a result, kde3 apps read kde4 settings, but since the options are
incompatible, they revert to defaults. For example when they read
widgetStyle=oxygen, they cannot find it and they load plastik, which
was the default in kde3.

Regards,
George

Bug#543764: Default klipperrc gets installed into the wrong directory (/etc/kde3/ instead of /etc/kde4/)

2009-08-26 Thread Stefan Bühler
Package: klipper
Version: 4:4.3.0-3
Severity: important

$ dpkg -L klipper
[..]
/etc/kde3/klipperrc

But strace shows:
$ strace -e trace=open,stat klipper --nofork
[..]
stat(/etc/kde4/klipperrc, 0x7fff132bbd20) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
[..]

(And it doesn't look for the one in /etc/kde3)

Workaround: copy the file either to /etc/kde4/ or ~/.kde/share/config

ktorrent, kde3 and kde4

2009-07-27 Thread Ross Boylan
I'm running lenny, and when I ask aptitude to install ktorrent it brings
in a bunch of KDE4 stuff and wants to remove kdebase-bin-kde3.

Previous discussion on this list indicates ktorrent has lots of kde4
dependencies (though 25 packages seems kind of high). But I'm a little
concerned about the planned removal of kdebase-bin-kde3. So, two
questions:

Is the installation safe, or is something odd on my system making it
unsafe?

Is it safe to do the upgrade while running KDE3? By this I mean while
inside a KDE3 session.

Thanks.
Ross Boylan

P.S. I'd appreciate a cc, since I'm not subscribed through this address.

As an alternative, you can still install ktorrent2.2 package (as Kevin said).

It is a KDE 3 application but ktorrent 3.1 has more features and is arguably
faster. What is more, 2.2 might be blocked from some trackers due to its age.
So users can choose what suites them best.

After upgrade to KDE4 with installing the package kde-full KDE and Gnome
are not startable.
The mouse cursor has changed on the login-screen and KDE4 is starting up
to the 3rd symbol.
Then it crashes and the XSession is closed.

Now the system is unusable and i will go back to Stable to have a
productionable system. :-(
Upgrade seems not to be possible and i havenot the time to make a
complete new setup.
Sorry - that's very disappointing.

(I hope i adressed the correct package)

After upgrade to KDE4 with installing the package kde-full KDE and Gnome
are not startable.
The mouse cursor has changed on the login-screen and KDE4 is starting up
to the 3rd symbol.
Then it crashes and the XSession is closed.

Now the system is unusable and i will go back to Stable to have a
productionable system. :-(
Upgrade seems not to be possible and i havenot the time to make a
complete new setup.
Sorry - that's very disappointing.

I attached the xsession-errors and here is the relevant part:

In all cases, konqueror and khelpcenter (the KDE 4 versions) were installed.

KDE3 apps with KDE4 khelpcenter / kfmclient

2009-04-25 Thread Ben Burton

Hi,

I have a KDE3 app that I maintain, whose help menu has a couple of items
that rely on helper programs:

(i) the usual Help - Handbook menu entry tries to open the handbook in
the standard way using khelpcenter;

(ii) there is an extra Help - API Reference menu entry that opens some
pre-installed HTML documentation using kfmclient.

With the new KDE4 packaging in both debian and ubuntu, I was losing hope
that I could keep these menu entries working properly, but I've found
that whilst none of them work everywhere, all of them work *somewhere*.
Specifically:

- In debian sid, the kfmclient entry works but the khelpcenter one doesn't
  (Could not find service 'khelpcenter');
- In ubuntu jaunty, the khelpcenter entry works but the kfmclient one doesn't.
  (Could not find service 'kfmclient');
- In ubuntu intrepid, neither works.

Does this mean there are just some magic packages that I need to have
install that will make it all work? (And, if so, which?)

If not, do we know how ubuntu has made it possible for khelpcenter4 to
work with KDE3 applications? If so, might it be possible to apply that
patch to debian also? I can work around the kfmclient problem easily
enough by patching the source code (all the app wants to do is display
HTML in a browser), but the khelpcenter issue is more of a problem.

Thanks - Ben.

Re: KDE3 apps with KDE4 khelpcenter / kfmclient

2009-04-25 Thread Ben Burton

Hi again,

On further digging, it looks like the ubuntu people have fixed the
khelpcenter problem by patching kdelibs directly. The patch is quite
small (in KApplication::invokeHelp(), start khelpcenter directly instead
of using dcop).

I'll file a bug for this against debian's kdelibs shortly.

In the meantime, if anyone knows how debian has fixed the kfmclient
problem where ubuntu hasn't, I'd still be interested -- I haven't
yet worked out why this works in sid but not jaunty. The relevant
function that's being called is KApplication::invokeBrowser().

Ben.

I'm experiencing consistent crashes of nspluginscan when it searches for
new plugins.

I hit the search button in plugin part of the Konqi config control
module. The progress bar goes up to 20%, then stalls for a while, and
KNotify comes up saying nspluginscan crashed with SIGSEGV.

Interestingly, if I remove /usr/lib/kde3 from the search path, it goes
through without problems. This makes it look like it is something in
this directory it doesn't like (and since it is KSVG I'd like to try,
this is bad...).

It says that the trace is useless, but I'm including the stuff that's
there for completeness:

Coexistence betwend kde3 and kde4

2009-04-16 Thread Leopold Palomo-Avellaneda
Hi,

I don't want to install kde3 and kde4 in the same box.

However, I administrate several boxes and I would like to have some box with
unstable (kde 4.2.2) and stable (kde 3.5.9) using the same /home for the
users (ergo .kde)

So, is this possible?

Regards,

Leo

Not really. But, this really shouldn't be much of an issue. Sharing a .kde
directory between KDE 3.4 and KDE 3.5 wasn't completely supported. Newer
versions of the applications may have moved configuration options and while
they will read the old versions they may write out the configuration
incompatibly.

In practice, sharing a .kde directory between KDE 3.4 and KDE 3.5 only
caused a few errors. In theory sharing a .kde directory between KDE 3.5 and
KDE 4.2 will probably cause more.

I suggest that you set KDE_HOME in your global environment on the different
systems. Using ~/.kdemajor.minor, for example .kde3.5 and .kde4.2,
should be sufficient. I think KDE_HOME is the only thing that needs to be
set, but you might want to double-check me.

I still have a .kde3.4 and a .kde3.5 (.kde is a symlink) from doing
something similar for different reasons.

I'm not completely sure what it was, but I think it was back when I was

 I have done a :

I have a locally compiled kde3 on /opt/kde3.5 and 4.2.2 on /usr installed from
Sid.
I changed the startkde script in /opt/kde/lde3.5/bin to reference $KDE_HOME as
.~/.kde3, have /opt/kde3.5/bin ahead of /usr/bin and to set a global
environment variable.

in /etc/profiles, I test this variable. If it is set, I do the same thing
there. Otherwize, $KDE_HOME is ~/.kde and /opt/kde3.5/bin in AFTER /usr/bin on
the PATH. Similarly, I set LD_LIBRARY_PATH and some others as well in the 3.5
startkde and /etc/profile.

With appropriate $KDE_HOME and PATHs, I have been running this way without a
hitch for a while now. In your case, your kde3.5 stuff will be on another box
but the idea is the same.

Hi Leo.

First, it's KDEHOME, not KDE_HOME (I don't know if the second works, but
ceirtainly the first is the only one I have seen). It's not set in /etc
because AFAIK the setting is done internally, in the code.

Second, I'm not fully sure about the place in which can be set, but I
suppose /etc/profile will do. Take a look at KDE's Techbase, there are nice
pages about doing KDE system administration:

Bug#524234: [KDE4] After upgrade from KDE3 to KDE4 a dbus-error message is display every few seconds when beeing on the console.

2009-04-15 Thread Benjamin Zbornik
Package: KDE4
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
After upgrade from KDE3 to KDE4 a dbus-error message is display every few
seconds when beeing on the console.

KDE4 itself works fine. Error message is as followed:
process 5097: arguments to dbus_move_error() were incorrect, assertion
(dest) == NULL || !dbus_error_is_set ((dest)) failed in file dbus-errors.c
line 278. This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.

A solution posted at sidux.com suggest to remove pcscd and libchipcard~ to
solve the problem. (http://www.sidux.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-11553-highlight-
dbusmoveerror.html)

As i need to use the packages pcscd and libchipcard~ for the chipcardreader
for Jameica/Hibiscus i would be pleased if there would be a better solution.

Many thanks for your support.

Debian has switched to KDE 4 in unstable and ksmserver

It is the way to go. BAsed of my memory (which might be flawed), the
crystal icon theme is the default in kde3 and placed in kdelibs, while
in kde4 it is not the default (nice oxygen is) and is placed in
kdeartwork.

So when you start a application, the tray bar icon appears randomly on your

could you check you have a System Tray plamoid?

I'm sorry. Things are better now.

Trying to install KPA or digikam (which depends currently on libkipi0) will
require uninstallation of gwenview and some other meta packages from kde4.

That's because gwenview depends on libkipi5 and KPA and friends depend on
libkipi0. And libkipi0 and libkipi5 and not co-installable.

Probably, you could just upload a version of kpa/digikam which depends on
libkipi5, in experimental.

kscope is installable.

KDE4 apps like dolphin run fine in KDE3. I have not tried panel applets and
such.

KDE3 apps will usually do just fine in KDE4. However, the problem is dcop.
Dcop was replaced with a dbus oriented system in KDE4. Running the KDE3 apps
will start or require the user to start dcopserver. Example, knemo will run
but until another applet, say ksensors starts dcopserver, it will not appear.
Afterwards, both appear. If for some reason, plasma crashes, these will still
be running but will not be restored to the panel.

It would be nice if a call-compatible dcop standin were around in KDE4 to help
backwards compatibility since KDE3 stuff will be around for a while and much
will never be ported!

Bug#370342: Make etc/kde3/kdm/Xaccess automatically configurable

2008-05-04 Thread Fathi Boudra
Hi,

afaics, the solution suggested by luk could be done (debconf).
Now, someone must implement debconf questions for /etc/kde3/kdm/Xaccess.

I would be happy to include a patch for that :)

for the record, Sune suggests:
what about just providing a different kdm init script that points to a
different confdir with your private config files ?

cheers,

Fathi

Hi,

I remember a time when I could modify the path for the X
session programs globally using the UserPath setting in
/etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc. Although at the time this feature was
working, perhaps the configuration file was in a different
location (I don't recall).

Has this functionality moved elsewhere? If so, just let me
know hwere it is, and we can close this bug report. But,
after Googling around, I didn't find any indication that this
was the case. Also the KDE GUI doesn't seem to have a place
for me to adjust anything resembling the UserPath.

Sukant Hajra

Well, maybe not in the Usb drive, but in order to avoid swap, the computer
you'd run this on would need some ram.

Appreciate if any expert can share your experience on the following :

 1. can this be done ?
I think so, I would do it using live-helper. Install it, and read
documentation from wiki.

 2. what is the space that will be required for this setup ?

Depends on what you consider minimum packages, but in order to have a
guideline, you may see that the kde4 live CD has this setup for kde4, so I'd
have that size as reference.

 3. what is
the basic kde packages that I need to install after installing with
 the Debian net-install cd
 ?
 - packages that I normally use - konqueror, konsole, kopete, firefox,
kwrite, kmix, klipper, kget, knetworkmanager, vlc, guarddog

Probably you have answered yourself :) Maybe you could also add kde-core
metapackage as a start and then look if all you need is installed.

 4. how to disble logging and reduce unnecessary read/writte - as this setup
will be used on laptops rather than servers ?

  Look into kde autologin feature.

 5. any other things that I should note

Well, although live-helper make the mastering process quite easy, it could
be a little tricky to setup, specially if you want to install anything that
doesn't come by default. In this case, you'll need to read LH (live-helper)
documentation carefully to find out what options you need to set.

Moreover, creating a live or installation image is heavily time and bandwith
consuming, consider using apt-cacher to sooth the network downloading, and
check your configuration twice before launching the actual LH build process.

Once you launch it prepare several rounds of your favourite refreshment,
you'll have time enough to drink... ;)

Thanks in advance for the advise.

 Cae

About kde3 in lenny

2008-03-04 Thread Patrice Pillot
Hi,

If I caught it correctly, it seems that freeze time is drawing near for
lenny. May I signal that bug #457487 would make kdm not usable for a
maybe not so small quantity of users (e.g. schools, ...). Are there any
chance that the proposed patch will be integrated in time for lenny ?

tia,

phep

OK, thank you for your responsiveness (but as I'm not used with the
testing transition process / release process I'm still not quite sure
the patch will be integrated in time to get into lenny in time).

Thanks anyway,

Package: kdm

Hello,

The /etc/kde3/kdm/XSession script is supposed to run appropriate login script
for user's login shell. However, not all shells available in Debian are
covered. My particular case is /bin/zsh-beta, but my /etc/shells has more
entries (ksh, es, esh, sash) which might or might not be useful to take care
about.

Thanks,

Bug#444284: [Fwd: KDE3 thai word break: KLibLoader -- QLibrary]

2008-01-23 Thread Pattara Kiatisevi

Dear Sune,

Another solution is to fix the kdelibs to use QLibrary to load libthai
instead of KLibLoder, as QLibrary won't need libthai.la. The patch is
attached:

I did send this patch to the kde-devel list since September 2007. And
the answers were:

This is a Debian specific packaging bug. Many distributions are still
shipping libtool archive files. Please contact the packagers of KDE for
Debian via http://bugs.debian.org/.

it's a distro bug if they make KDE 3 stop working -- it's been working
for years like that.:

In a sense they are right. It's been working for years like that. So
maybe it should be fixed at the distro level.

What do you think?

Cheers,
Pattara

Hi kde-devel,

Currently rendering Thai text in KDE3's KHTML on Linux platform makes
use of libthai's th_brk() to identify suitable word break positions (as
Thai sentences have no space between words). If libthai is not linked to
kdelibs (done so by configure --enable-libthai=yes), kdelibs will try to
dynamically load libthai.so using KLibLoader (see
kdelibs/khtml/rendering/break_lines.cpp).

KLibLoader requires libthai.la, which recently has been removed from
Linux distro's libthai-dev packages (e.g., in Debian), resulting in it
couldn't load libthai at all, and all Thai web pages are incorrectly
rendered, i.e., word breaking at wrong positions.

One solution suggested by Theppitak as discussed in
http://groups.google.com/group/thai-linux-foss-devel/ is to switch to
use QLibrary instead, which won't need libthai.la. It will look for
libthai.so directly (would be even better though if it will look for
libthai.so.0 directly so that libthai-dev package needs not be installed).

The attached patch is tested against kdelibs-3.5.6 on Ubuntu 7.04. Or
you can grab it here:

http://www.suriyan.in.th/patches/kdelibs-3.5.6-thai-break-qlibrary-instead-off-klibloader.patch

Are we gonna have another release of KDE3? Is it possible to include
this patch?

Cheers,
Pattara

Re: KDE4 and KDE3 separate

Apart from the Oxygen icons, I don't see anything else installable on KDE3
without breaking the KDE3 installation. Trying to install okular requires
to have the KDE4 libraries and runtime packages installed.

Are you packaging KDE3 and KDE4 runtime packages and libraries separately?

IMO it would be better to make KDE4 separately installable. For now, maybe
in /opt. This would allow most users to be able to fully test/install KDE4
without the fear of breaking their boxes because they will have a backup DE
available always.

Once KDE3 is EOLed and we feel that it is good enough to move to
testing/unstable, just add a dependency of KDE4 onto KDE3 and change the
path from /opt to the standard locations.

This way users will be able to better use/test KDE4. And Debian KDE won't be
late in the game.

What do you think?
