Bug#410857: NFS breaks down because of errors in connection tracking
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-3-686 Version: 2.6.18-7 Severity: normal Hello, this is my first bug report and I am trying my best to submit it in a correct way and to give enough information for solving the problem. After installing and configuring a firewall, (Shorewall) I observed that NFS broke down on the clients after a reboot -- not always, but in 80% of all cases. With some help from a friend, I could find out that there was an inconsistency in connection tracking: although the NFS connection was established by the client, the NFS packages sent by the server did not pass the sequence number check. After adding a log target to Shorewall's dropInvalid chain (there is none by default), I saw the following in the syslog: - Feb 8 17:03:14 kernel: ip_ct_tcp: SEQ is over the upper bound (over the window of the receiver) IN= OUT= SRC= DST= LEN=1084 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=1679 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=2049 DPT=702 SEQ=1700263068 ACK=605923012 WINDOW=448 RES=0x00 ACK PSH URGP=0 OPT (0101080A03BA7D57A04A) Feb 8 17:03:14 kernel: ip_ct_tcp: ACK is over the upper bound (ACKed data not seen yet) IN= OUT= SRC= DST= LEN=52 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=25485 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=702 DPT=2049 SEQ=605923012 ACK=1700264100 WINDOW=284 RES=0x00 ACK URGP=0 OPT (0101080AA04A03BA7D57) Feb 8 17:03:14 kernel: ip_ct_tcp: ACK is over the upper bound (ACKed data not seen yet) IN= OUT= SRC= DST= LEN=200 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=25486 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=702 DPT=2049 SEQ=605923012 ACK=1700264100 WINDOW=284 RES=0x00 ACK PSH URGP=0 OPT (0101080AA04B03BA7D57) Feb 8 17:03:14 kernel: ip_ct_tcp: SEQ is over the upper bound (over the window of the receiver) IN= OUT= SRC= DST= LEN=172 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=1680 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=2049 DPT=702 SEQ=1700264100 ACK=605923160 WINDOW=456 RES=0x00 ACK PSH URGP=0 OPT (0101080A03BA7D58A04B) Feb 8 17:03:14 kernel: ip_ct_tcp: ACK is over the upper bound (ACKed data not seen yet) IN= OUT= SRC= DST= LEN=192 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=25487 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=702 DPT=2049 SEQ=605923160 ACK=1700264220 WINDOW=284 RES=0x00 ACK PSH URGP=0 OPT (0101080AA04F03BA7D58) - With some more help, I got a workaround for that: echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_tcp_be_liberal After including this line into Shorewall's post-init script, the NFS connection did not break down any more. I don't know whether the origin of the problem is in the netfilter or in the nfs server or in the connection tracking on the client or server (maybe the server does not notice the client reboot and goes on with sequence numbers from the old connections?), but it is in the kernel -- the firewall rules are correct and the packages are not recognized as a part of the existing connection. Bug#410853: linux-2.6: please add support for armel architecture
Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-10 Severity: normal Tags: patch User: debian-arm@lists.debian.org Usertags: eabi The armel architecture is a new port of arm built with an incompatible abi. To generate kernel images for armel, I've based things on the existing arm setup, with these changes: * AFAIK footbridge is not supported for armel. * At least for transitonal purposes, it makes sense to build the armel kernels with support for the arm architecture too, via CONFIG_OABI_COMPAT. This does impose some performance penalty, so may be turned off later. Apply the attached patch as follows: cp -a debian/arch/arm debian/arch/armel rm debian/arch/armel/*footbridge* patch -p1 < armel.patch debian/rules debian/control Note that many files in debian/arch/armel are identical to the ones in debian/arch/arm, and should be changed in parallel going forward. Symlinking the files is also a possibility.. Also note that kernel-package needs to be patched with the patch in bug #410459 before it can build the armel kernel. -- see shy jo diff -ur --new-file old/linux-2.6-2.6.18.dfsg.1/debian/arch/armel/config linux-2.6-2.6.18.dfsg.1/debian/arch/armel/config --- old/linux-2.6-2.6.18.dfsg.1/debian/arch/armel/config 2007-02-13 16:18:19.0 -0500 +++ linux-2.6-2.6.18.dfsg.1/debian/arch/armel/config 2007-02-13 16:08:25.0 -0500 @@ -19,4 +19,5 @@ CONFIG_JBD=y # CONFIG_ARCH_REALVIEW is not set CONFIG_TMPFS=y -# CONFIG_AEABI is not set +CONFIG_AEABI=y +CONFIG_OABI_COMPAT=y diff -ur --new-file old/linux-2.6-2.6.18.dfsg.1/debian/arch/armel/defines linux-2.6-2.6.18.dfsg.1/debian/arch/armel/defines --- old/linux-2.6-2.6.18.dfsg.1/debian/arch/armel/defines 2007-02-13 16:18:19.0 -0500 +++ linux-2.6-2.6.18.dfsg.1/debian/arch/armel/defines 2007-02-13 16:08:25.0 -0500 @@ -1,6 +1,5 @@ [base] flavours: - footbridge iop32x ixp4xx rpc @@ -11,13 +10,6 @@ [image] suggests: fdutils -[footbridge_image] -suggests: nwutil - -[footbridge] -class: Footbridge based -longclass: Footbridge (CATS, Netwinder) - [iop32x] class: IOP32x longclass: IOP32x based (Thecus N2100, etc) diff -ur --new-file old/linux-2.6-2.6.18.dfsg.1/debian/arch/defines linux-2.6-2.6.18.dfsg.1/debian/arch/defines --- old/linux-2.6-2.6.18.dfsg.1/debian/arch/defines 2007-02-13 16:18:19.0 -0500 +++ linux-2.6-2.6.18.dfsg.1/debian/arch/defines 2007-02-13 16:08:25.0 -0500 @@ -6,6 +6,7 @@ alpha amd64 arm + armel hppa i386 ia64 signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#410845: [powerpc] The PCILynx firewire driver is broken on PPC machines, and should be disabled.
Package: linux-2.6 When I boot Debian (Etch or Sarge) on my Blue&White PowerMac, with the old TI PCILynx firewire chip on the motherboard, the pcilynx driver crashes consistently. If I blacklist pcilynx, the crash goes away, but I have no firewire capability. https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/linux1394-devel Looking at the archives of the Linux1394 developers mailinglist, it appears that pcilynx on PPC hardware has been horribly broken for a long time (at least since 2004). Furthermore, it looks like support for pcilynx may be dropped entirely from the next generation of ieee1394 drivers, regardless of CPU type. I'd like to suggest that pcilynx be disabled in the Debian PPC kernels, and a note to that effect be put in the release documents, encouraging users who need firewire to avail themselves of one of the cheap OHCI1394 cards. Bug#408446:
Good news, the problem might be hardware related. With the daily installer from the 12th of February, and if I only have three or fewer CPU inserted in the v440 initial boot and network detection works! It surprises me that with Solaris, or Debian Etch netboot, I can use four CPU, but with daily only three or less. Someone more kernel / HW knowledgeable might understand that :) However, I can report that the problem with the Cassini Oops which exists in Debian Etch netboot is gone with daily. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
