Bug#453294: ignores boot=live, order of parameters is important

2007-11-28 Thread Thomas Lange
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.85h

I'm using initramfs-tools and live-initramfs to boot my FAI
environment. Therefore I have to append boot=live and root=/dev/nfs to
get the live-initramfs scripts executed.

If I use this order

boot=live root=/dev/nfs

it does not work, since the script /usr/share/initramfs-tools/init
defines boot=nfs when parsing root=/dev/nfs. So my definition of
boot=live get overwritten.

Using the order root=/dev/nfs boot=live
work without any hassle.

2.6.23 sid upload

2007-11-28 Thread maximilian attems
announcing upload of linux-image 2.6.23 to sid on friday
it is already on 2.6.23.9.
please holler if you have outstanding issues.

remaining issues:
- tg3, bnx2 firmware_request()

the second one is particular bad as bnx2 is completly disabled,
i'm pondering to revert it's removal for now until a patch
with request_firmware is written.
upstream should hopefully understand some time that updating
the firmware without having to recompile/reboot your kernel
is a feature, that is quite standard nowadays.

.config 2.6.24 i386/amd64 discussions

2007-11-28 Thread maximilian attems
now that both amd64 and i386 have a tickless kernel
it makes sense to enable CONFIG_HZ_1000 for both.
the current consumption is no longer a trouble and
we gain better interactive response. the timer
interrupts should no longer reduce server perf.

back in the early 2.6 game i disabled preempt,
due to strange driver bugs poping up, now that
this seems to have been cleared upstream all
major distros ship with the PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY on,
PREEMPT_BKL

NACK. You did not provide anything productive for the last discussions
about this so please stop that.

Well, you should've read the responses from upstream about that.
"The firmware needs to match the driver and changes often, bla, bla,
bla...". Well, I found less changes than the iwl firmwares.

hey Martin,
 Only fixes for bugs of >= important severity are permitted in a
stable release, so unfortunately this one doesn't qualify.

Out of curiousity, how frequent are these messages?

update-initramfs does not update initrd.img if /proc/mounts contains
errors=remount-ro. Instead, I get the following message:

WARNING: /boot is ro mounted.
update-initramfs: Not updating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-rc2-x61s

Reason for this behaviour is the awk expression in line 524 of
update-initramfs, which just checks for the presence of the string "ro".
Instead, it should check for 'ro' at the beginning of the string, or
following a , separator:

boot_opts=$(awk '/boot/{if (match($4, /^ro/) || match($4, /,ro/) && $2 ==
"/boot") print "ro"}' /proc/mounts)

Package: initramfs-tools

I'm using initramfs-tools and live-initramfs to boot my FAI
environment. Therefore I have to append boot=live and root=/dev/nfs to
get the live-initramfs scripts executed.

If I use this order

boot=live root=/dev/nfs

it does not work, since the script /usr/share/initramfs-tools/init
defines boot=nfs when parsing root=/dev/nfs. So my definition of
boot=live get overwritten.

Using the order root=/dev/nfs boot=live
work without any hassle.

thanks comfirmed, tested and applied proposed fix to 0.91b.
as this a potentential upgrade failure, i'll see to get
that fixed too in etch.

Hi Maximilian,

I'm sorry I don't understand what you want to tell me.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Debian Bug Tracking System) wrote:

But this bug was a request to provide proper documentation. I even
offered to write it IIRC, if only someone helped me to find the
necessary information.

> if using the linux-headers and linux-support infrastructure
> please holler on debian-kernel.

Why should I? I was using kernel-package, and its maintainer reassigned
the bug to kernel-headers. If you think this package or its successors
are not responsible for the fact that kernel-package documentation and
kernel-headers behavior do not match, please reassign the bug to the
package you think is responsible, instead of closing it.

> for kernel-package question please direct them directly to Manoj,

Then why don't you reassign the bug back, or speak to Manoj yourself? I
don't know anything about the issue except that it (kernel-headers)
doesn't work as advertised (by kernel-package), so I cannot argue with
him. You probably can.

> so closing for good now this one as kernel-headers are gone!

Now that sounds like a bad reason to close a bug. There's probably still
some package which installs kernel headers, isn't it?

> irc this is even a dup.

In which case you should have merged it, not closed.

not the bug report is a strange conversation with manoj about
kernel-package. we already stated x time that we don't maintain
kernel-package. also i have zero info from it what should be missing.

reality check on.
if "nobody" would be able to build external modules,
we would have the bts full of strange reports.
as a matter of fact it is possible.

the easy way to do it is module-assisstant. i already told that a year
ago and no i'm not keen keeping useless bugs open.

i might come back even grumpier next time when i'll hit the dup ;)
no real please use module-assisant and be happy.
kernel-package is even no longer a supported way to build linux-2.6

best regards
