Bug#465278: Appletouch failure upon resume after suspend2ram

2009-01-21 Thread Simon Valiquette
Package: linux-image-2.6-vserver-powerpc
Version: 2.6.26-13
Followup-For: Bug #465278

After upgrading from Etch to Lenny, I started to get exactly the same
problem than what Cyril Brulebois experienced.

The laptop I am using is the latest iBook G4.

The error message I get when I try to add again the appletouch module
is almost identical to this:

| Feb 11 17:04:52 evy kernel: drivers/input/mouse/appletouch.c: Could not do
mode read request from device (Geyser Raw mode)
| Feb 11 17:04:52 evy kernel: appletouch: probe of 1-2:1.0 failed with error -12
| Feb 11 17:04:52 evy kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver
appletouch

except that in my case, I get the error -5 instead of -12:

[45692.025239] appletouch: Could not do mode read request from device (Geyser
Raw mode)
[45692.025289] appletouch: probe of 1-2:1.0 failed with error -5
[45692.025347] usbcore: registered new interface driver appletouch

Just to make things very clear, I don't think that this bug is the
same than the one where removing and adding again the appletouch module
is enough to make the mouse working again.

The later bug appears quite infrequently, and usually the mouse is still
able to move (even if in an unusable fashion). Also, from memory the
error messages were very different.

In the current bug, the mouse don't react anymore even in the text
console and seems to happens systematically once the laptop goes to
suspend mode. Also, it seems that the only way to make it working
again is by rebooting the laptop.

Some people have mentioned that the problem could be in the package
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics and not in the kernel. Unless he was
talking about the other mouse bug, I am sceptical about it and will
try to reproduce the bug without running the X server at all during
the boot process and report the result once I have time.

High I/O wait times in kernels since 2.6.18

2009-01-21 Thread Svante Signell
Hello,

i have problems with extremely high IO wait times for some operations
like apt-get-update and apt-get upgrade. Even checking the disks with
hdparm shows this problem. I have not seen this problem with the I/O
wait until recent kernels.

The system disk is rather slow:
hdparm -t /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 26 MB in 3.23 seconds = 8.06 MB/sec

Other disks are faster:
hdparm -t /dev/hdb
/dev/hdb:
Timing buffered disk reads: 70 MB in 3.04 seconds = 23.05 MB/sec

but do also show the extremely long wait times, up to 97% wait and only
a few % CPU. The disks have DMA enabled and I have checked the memory
for a long time with no problems.

The problem can be related to the latency bug reported for recent
kernels: Large I/O operations result in slow performance and high
iowait times, http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12309
but running the provided programs ProcessSchedulerTest and
ThreadSchedulerTest does not show the problems.

I have tried three CPU schedulers: cfq (default), anticipatory and
deadline with small differences. Kernels tried recently are
2.6.18-6-686, 2.6.25-2-682 and 2.6.26-1-686.

Programs running consuming most of the memory are evolution and galeon.
However, shutting them down does not change anything.

dmesg does not show anything strange, except maybe:

Bug#429381: Info received (XFS internal error)

2009-01-21 Thread Chun Tian (binghe)

Hi,

Recently I found this issue only happends on our specific hardware (HP
Proliant DL145), our other DELL storage runs well as the same load
average and same XFS structure.

So I think DD should just close this bug, I'll try to find the exact
reason from another view.

Sorry.

vserver recompile zlib.h error

2009-01-21 Thread Declan Mullen

Hi

I'm trying to compile the source for Lenny's
linux-image-2.6.26-1-vserver-686 kernel (version 2.6.26-13), but I'm
getting the below zlib.h missing error. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Compile error:

  /usr/bin/makeARCH=i386 \
   -C Documentation/lguest
  make[1]: Entering directory
  `/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.26/Documentation/lguest'
  cc -Wall -Wmissing-declarations -Wmissing-prototypes -O3
  -I../../includelguest.c -lz -o lguest
lguest.c:34:18: error: zlib.h: No such file or directory
  make[1]: *** [lguest] Error 1
  make[1]: Leaving directory
  `/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.26/Documentation/lguest'
  make: *** [debian/stamp/build/kernel] Error 2

A find for zlib.h finds:

  /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.26/include/config/jffs2/zlib.h
  /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.26/include/linux/zlib.h

I have installed linux-source-2.6.26 and linux-patch-debian-2.6.26, then
patched the source with the vserver patches, ie:

  # cd /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.26
  # /usr/src/kernel-patches/all/2.6.26/apply/debian -a i386 -f vserver

Then put in place the default .config from
linux-image-2.6.26-1-vserver-686 package:

  # make clean
  # make mrproper
  # cp /boot/config-2.6.26-1-vserver-686 .config

Then edited the .config to remove only the IPv6 support via:

  # make menuconfig

Then attempted the compile:

  # make-kpkg clean
  # make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image

Eventually I get the above zlib.h not found error.

Any ideas what I have done wrong ?

BTW, installing linux-patch-debian-2.6.26 also installed its
dependency linux-support-2.6.26-1 which put in place
/usr/src/linux-support-2.6.26-1, was I suppose to have done anything
with that ?

Thanks,
Declan

Bug#465278: Appletouch failure upon resume after suspend2ram

2009-01-21 Thread Simon Valiquette

Simon Valiquette un jour écrivit:

Some people have mentioned that the problem could be in the package

talking about the other mouse bug, I am sceptical about it and will

I can now confirm that this bug have nothing to do with
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics, or xorg for that matter.

I booted in single user mode and basically have done the following:

/bin/mount -a

/etc/init/udev start
/etc/init/bootmisc.sh start

/etc/init/pmud restart
/etc/init/hibernate restart
/etc/init/gpm start # to have a working mouse in the console

/usr/sbin/pm-suspend

And that was more than enough to reliably reproduce this old bug with
very few running programs.

Bug#512504: LVM with Megaraid not detected due to wrong module load order

2009-01-21 Thread Nico Schottelius
Package: linux-image-2.6.24-1-686
Version: 2.6.24-7
Severity: important

After installing lenny with netinstall beta2 to a megaraid (dell pe6600)
disk array using debians default LVM partition type the system is unusable
after bootup.

I think the error is in the load order of the modules: LVM volumes are
checked before the scsi driver for megaraid is loaded.

Bug#475055: suspend on x31 still fails sometimes

2009-01-21 Thread The Anarcat
unarchive 475055
found 475055 2.6.26-10
thanks

Hello,

I'm still seeing this behaviour, from time to time, on my Thinkpad X31.

I don't have the exact error message (I would need to take a picture for
that ;) but it really looks like the one describe in this bug report and
at the end of this page:

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problems_with_ACPI_suspend-to-ram

I feel this issue is not resolved and should be reopened. I'm available
for testing new kernels, recompile with patches, anything to get my
suspend working. ;)

I have tried to turn on/off/disable HPA in the BIOS, nothing works. I
include a dmesg and non-verbose lspci (more available upon request).

(Should I open a new bug report since this one is archived?)

Bug#502668: WhiteHEAT driver and firmware distribution for Linux

Hi David

Ben didn't mention this, but if you could release the source code instead,
it would be most appreciated.

This would allow us to distribute the firmware as part of official Debian
media, rather than the non-free repository, and be the most satisfactory
solution for those of our users who are concerned about security and about
being in control of the hardware they adquired from you.

Thanks for considering,

Bug#497870: Bug is still there in version 2.6.26-13 + info

2009-01-21 Thread Hans Christian
I'm now using 2.6.26-13, but the problem is still there.

I've stopped doing large transfers of many files, because this bug
manifests itself each time I do. But tonite I had to, and I discovered
something that might help: I sshed into another computer and used scp
to put files from there onto my T61p. When the T61p crashed, I walked
over to the other computer, and discovered that I was still listed as
logged into a user acount there via ssh, as if the T61p was still
active. Scp was also still listed as active. Maybe this means that
there is some kind of connection after all, even though you can't get
into the T61p after the crash? I couldn't ping the T61p though, and
when I did a hard reboot, no files had been transfered after the crash.

I just thought I'd tell you this. I haven't managed to try out the
2.6.28 kernel. I tried compiling one from the debian source in
kernel-archive, but the compile failed (I followed the instructions in
kernel-package to the letter).

The problem seems to have been solved in arch linux:

http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/10984?string=iwlwifiproject=1search_name=type

I'm not technical enough to quite understand what they're saying, but
it looks useful.

/Hans Christian

  wait until recent kernels.

The system disk is rather slow:
  hdparm -t /dev/hda
  /dev/hda:
  Timing buffered disk reads: 26 MB in 3.23 seconds = 8.06 MB/sec

  Other disks are faster:

  Timing buffered disk reads: 70 MB in 3.04 seconds = 23.05 MB/sec

but do also show the extremely long wait times, up to 97% wait and only
a few % CPU. The disks have DMA enabled and I have checked the memory

Could be a harddisk failure, have you run any HDD diagnostics? SMART
 might tell something too.

Thank you for the tip. Something is probably wrong with hda, even though
hdparm does not show any speed problems. (hda is an old 10GB disk while
hdb is a newer 120GB disk so 8MB/sec and 23MB/sec are reasonable).

Which HDD diagnostic programs are available? I did not find anything by
searching with apt-cache.
How to find out which errors are given by opcode 0xb?
The disk still runs OK, can it crash any time without warning? In case
it has to be replaced, any hints on how to move the installed system to
a new disk?? The tar file method would work, right but what about
the /var partition which is written to frequently?
