Package: linux-image-2.6.30-2-amd64
Version: 2.6.30-8
Severity: normal

This does not happen on 2.6.30-1-amd64, so I simply use the older kernel for
now; when the older kernel boots, I do see the software raid being detected and
configured.

My system uses software RAID on all of its drives, including the boot device.

linux-image-2.6.30-2-amd64 refuses to boot for me; it cannot find the root
filesystem, and it appears the reason is because it can't find any of the
software raids. The uuid's for the software raid devices are not present, nor
are the normal /dev/md? entries. /proc/mdstat doesn't exist either.

I've taken a full log of the boot (via serial console), and dumped it to a
file, which I'll include as an attachment.

no, wrong, only valid if it would break several boxes.

The problem appeared after an upgrade from lenny to squeeze.
This does not happen on 2.6.26-2-686.

The problem is similar to #551286 for amd64
but the proposed fixed do not work for me.

you provide zero information, how about if you start to
A) try out 2.6.32 from unstable
woow yes there is a newer linux image out there,
   shouldn't that be tried out?

B) start giving infos on where your bug lies:
   dpkg -l mdadm udev util-linux-ng lvm2

Hmm, you have a problem there.

Linus is very likely going to cheerfully tell the Xen and KVM developers to
duke it out in a bloodbath, and to not forget to bring AlacrityVM into the
fray either. He could care less for virtualization, and he is likely to
refuse to merge anything non-trivial until the virtualization crazy people
manage to reach a consensus on a sane API. Look for the AlacrityVM threads
in LKML if you doubt me.

Note: I am not defending KVM. I don't agree with their main ideology (that
their hardware-emulating approach is the One True Way). But I can well see
why Linus decided to take that instance.

Xen's track record from hell on getting their act cleaned up for upstream
merging is also going to get in the way. Some people have long memories.

Then again the KVM vs. AlacrityVM discussion is a bit different.
AlacrityVM is a fork of KVM..

Linus has been happily accepting a lot of Xen pv_ops (domU) patches from Jeremy
lately..

So it seems to be mostly about the 'quality' of the code.

Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686
Version: 2.6.26-11
Severity: important

The box is VIA Epia SN board with a VIA C7 processor.

This chipset has two network cards, eth0 and eth1
eth0: VIA Networking Velocity Family Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
eth1: VIA Rhine II at 0x1c800, 00:40:63:f7:b6:8b, IRQ 23.
(lspci output is at the end)

Doing 'ifconfig eth0 up' crashes the kernel hard (kernel oops + box frozen).
eth1 is working fine.
eth0 was working fine with Etch 2.6.18-6 kernel.
This is 100% reproducible.

(The box also crashes at boot-time if eth0 is configured at
boot-time via /etc/network/interfaces)

The oops message is not logged, but is the same as in
bug #508527 '2.6.26-11 oops on initial NIC (via-velocity) setup'
and also in kernel Bugzilla #11121
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11121
(also under Debian).

Cheers,

Severity: normal

Without a serial console, all I can tell is that the root disk is
accessed briefly and then the boot must fail as there is no further disk
activity.

I wonder if bug #561309 is really fixed.

After upgrading to linux-2.6.26 from 2.6.18, one of my two network cards
stopped working. Closer examination showed lots of
tulip_stop_rxtx() failed (CSR5 0xfc74 CSR6 0x2042202)
messages. It seems that bug #405203 resurfaced again, but I was unable to add
a reply there since it's archived already. The workaround described there
(rmmod tulip; rmmod dmfe; modprobe dmfe) works for me. A quick diff of the two
kernel versions' modules.pcimap files shows that both dmfe and tulip claim
responsibility for the same devices (again):

I get an kernel oops while booting lenny after dist-upgrading from etch. The
oops occurs when usually the VT6120/VT6121/VT6122 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
(via-velocity) is getting configured. Its 100% reproducible, booting a fresh
weekly build lenny installer result in the same crashes.

 Hi All,

I would like to report, that current Debian 2.6.26-2 kernel packages are
unstable (soft and hard locks occur) when intensively using audit features.
There are already fixes by Eric Paris and Al Viro for these bugs in mainline
kernel. These patches should be included in Debian kernels as well. Otherwise
Debian kernels are competely useless in cases when audit system is enabled
 and audit.rules are configured.

The following patch commits have to be included:

Thanks Sergey.
Would you mind filing a bug for these so it can be tracked?

did you get thrown to a console?
add bootparam rootdelay=12 to grub and wait for 12 seconds,
then check which devices exists: ls -l/dev/[hs]da*

Bug#564114: e1000: Potential packet filtering bypass

2010-01-07 Thread Ben Hutchings
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-4
Severity: normal
Tags: patch security

Fabian Yamaguchi made a presentation at 26C3
http://events.ccc.de/congress/2009/Fahrplan/events/3596.en.html which
included a bug in e1000 related to this fix for CVE-2009-1385:

commit ea30e11970a96cfe5e32c03a29332554573b4a10
Author: Neil Horman nhor...@tuxdriver.com
Date: Tue Jun 2 01:29:58 2009 -0700

e1000: add missing length check to e1000 receive routine

The bug is that the last part of a scattered frame will be accepted so
long as it is longer than 4 bytes. This can be used to evade packet
filtering in front of the host with the e1000 hardware, since the packet
filter will look at the real frame headers but Linux will see the
'headers' in this last part.

Personally I doubt that many packet filters are configured to allow
jumbo frames through, hence severity is only 'normal'.

A proposed fix was posted in:
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.network/148454

We should get a separate CVE number for this bug.

Ben.

Bug#564110: r8169: Fix for CVE-2009-1389 introduces denial of service issue

2010-01-07 Thread Ben Hutchings

Version: 2.6.32-4
Severity: serious
Tags: security

Fabian Yamaguchi made a presentation at 26C3
http://events.ccc.de/congress/2009/Fahrplan/events/3596.en.html which
included a bug in r8169 reintroduced by:

commit fdd7b4c3302c93f6833e338903ea77245eb510b4
Author: Eric Dumazet eric.duma...@gmail.com
Date: Tue Jun 9 04:01:02 2009 -0700

r8169: fix crash when large packets are received

On some older r8169 controllers this will enable scattering on receive,
and the first word of the second and subsequent RX buffers for a frame
will wrongly be treated as a status word. This can be used for denial
of service at the very least.

There is ongoing discussion on netdev about how to fix this. In the
mean time we should get a CVE number for this.

Please can you test whether this is the case. Although CD device names
are not as critical as disks, I do want to make this upgrade as smooth
as possible.

On upgrade, we will recommend that users identify hard disk volumes in
configuration files by label or UUID (unique identifier) rather than by
device name, which will work with both old and new kernel versions. I

I have not yet seen any comments from maintainers of the various boot
loaders. It is vital that this upgrade process is reliable and does not
prevent systems from booting, so please do review the code for your boot
loader.

If you prefer, I can prepare packages that include this script on
postinst and upload them to people.debian.org for you or others to test.

Bug#564156: FTBFS on armel: isp1362-hcd was written for some other kernel version

2010-01-07 Thread Ben Hutchings
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-4
Justification: fails to build from source
Severity: important
Tags: patch

It seems the submitter of this driver was only pretending to work
with mainline, because this code won't compile on anything after
2.6.26:

#ifdef CONFIG_ARM
if (isp1362_hcd-board)
set_irq_type(irq, isp1362_hcd-board-int_act_high ?
IRQT_RISING : IRQT_FALLING);
#endif

It looks like this can easily be fixed, but as this is a platform
device driver and none of our kernel flavours appears to use it I see
no reason to build it at all.

Well, aboot is effectively unmaintained, along with the port as a whole,
since I no longer have an alpha that boots (and I don't think doing test
builds on a buildd is adequate for uploading a bootloader with a different
toolchain, so I haven't officially orphaned the package). If you care about
getting feedback for alpha, I'd suggest mailing
