Bug#661151: [apparmor] Bug#661151: linux-2.6: lacks AppArmor kernel/userspace interface

Hi,

Thank you, John, for your answers :)

yes you can pull them out of the tarball,

That would be 0002-AppArmor-compatibility-patch-for-v5-interface.patch
that can be found in the kernel-patches/$LATEST/ directory of the
apparmor Debian source package. Given $LATEST == 3.1 currently, see
bellow for the Ubuntu patches that were maybe refreshed.

John, do you confirm this patch does not depend on any of the
two others?

(namely:
0001-AppArmor-compatibility-patch-for-v5-network-controll.patch and
0003-AppArmor-Allow-dfa-backward-compatibility-with-broke.patch)

or from the ubuntu kernel tree.

I guess that would be
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-precise.git;a=commit;h=56f928f0cbf810c047a9a72e4e5c4840800437ec

John, please correct me if I did not guess right.

There are also a new set of patches available against the 3.3
kernel. The static parts of the interface have been updated and
pushed into the 3.4 kernel. And the goal is to get the other part
into the 3.5 kernel (still a wip).

John: I guess the Linux 3.2 kernel shipped in Precise will carry those
patches, and this is why the v5 compat' patches got recently reverted
in Precise's kernel tree, right?

Though those will require a more recent userspace.

John: that will be called 2.8, right?

It does not but there may be a small conflict or two to resolve if
0001-AppArmor-compatibility-patch-for-v5-network-controll.patch is not
applied first.

If it doesn't apply cleanly I will be happy to update it for you.

 correct

If the Debian kernel team was willing to carry some kind of AppArmor
kernel/userspace interface patch, I'm now unsure if the old or new
ones would be better suited. (I assume AppArmor 2.8 is released long
enough before the Wheezy freeze, so that we can ship it in there, and
are given this choice.)

On the one hand, the old compat' patches are confidence inspiring, as
they are small and have been shipped by Ubuntu for a while.

On the other hand, it seems the new patches are being upstreamed,
which makes them more appealing somehow than the older ones.

John, I think it would help if you could please point us more
precisely to the commits of the new interface that have been
upstreamed already, and to the ones that have not been, so that we can
get a rough idea of where things are at.

Kees, others, what do you think?

Today I installed and booted (with init=/bin/systemd) systemd for the
first time. Alas, it does not work for me. :-( The last output on the
screen was from systemd-fsck which successfully checked the root
partition, then the boot hung without further output requiring to reboot
with SysRq-b.

Note that while I'm running a self-compiled kernel, the problem also
occurred with the official 2.6.39-2-amd64 Debian kernel.

This bug has been fixed in Linux 3.2.10
(autofs: work around unhappy compat problem on x86-64).

I could not test the Debian kernel because of bug #662891, but a
self-built 3.2.10 kernel works.

Bug#663912: linux-image-3.3.0-rc6-amd64: please enable CONFIG_RTS5139 for SDcard support

2012-03-14 Thread Aurelien Jacobs
Package: linux-2.6
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

Simply enabling CONFIG_RTS5139 as a module would add support for SDcard
in some laptop such as the Asus Zenbook (UX31E). So it would be nice to
have it enabled by default instead of having to recompile the kernel
myself every time.

Thanks.

Sounds reasonable. The driver seems to have been merged in the 3.2 merge
window, which is barely in time for us not to have to backport it for
support in wheezy.

Am I correct in assuming these card readers are only available as a
built-in chip on x86 laptops, and not as a USB gadget that could be
plugged in on machines with other processor architectures?

Bug#622971: Fixed!

2012-03-14 Thread Marcos Raul Carot Collins
Linux-Image-3.2.9-1 does not freeze AND the atheros card works!!

I noticed that it sometimes (very rarely) goes off line but recovers itself in
a couple seconds unlike before that it needed modprobe -r ath9k, modprobe
ath9k to come up again.

I have been testing for about 3 days with no issues,

THANKS!

It seems mostly used in recent laptops, but some desktops also features
this chip.
I don't know of any USB gadget with this chip, but as the chip is
connected on the USB bus, it would be quite easy to conceive a
USB gadget with it. Anyway, I guess it is better to enable it only
on i386/amd64 until we discover some actual USB gadget using it.

Thanks for the patch !

Yes, that looks right, thanks.

Changes near v2.6.38-rc1~419^2~40^2 (drm/radeon/kms: add Ontario APU
ucode loading support, 2010-11-22) might be responsible. If that is
the cause, then 2.6.37-2 should work --- could you try it?

I'm having difficulty finding a snapshots.debian.org URL that gives me that
package in Wheezy, what would you suggest I use for the URL?

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.38-3
Severity: important
File: ath9k

ath9k disconects quite often (around 10 times a day) since upgrading the kernel
to 2.6.38-2.

Workaround is to modprob -r ath9k and then modprob ath9k.

I am happy to test and collect more info, just tell me what to do.

Cheers,

 Hello!
 Sorry my bad english.

After switch to kernel 3.x.x in syslog these messages:

[2.383412] mdadm: sending ioctl 800c0910 to a partition!
[2.383483] mdadm: sending ioctl 1261 to a partition!
[...]

Many ioctl operations have been disabled on disk partitions and
logical volumes because they can affect the whole disk. (This problem
is designated CVE-2011-4127.) It is supposed to be possible to assign a
partition or LV to some user without letting them access any other
part of the disk.

Operations that fail due to this new restriction are logged so that if
this breaks some program it is easy to see which operation it was
attempting. But if mdadm continues to work properly, don't worry
about it.

Ben.

Bug#628444: iwlagn - MAC is in deep sleep, cannot restore wifi operation

2012-03-14 Thread Shannon Dealy

Like others, the problems seemed to start around 2.6.39.

Thought I should note here, my system showed this problem with 2.6.36
through 2.6.39. It seems to have stopped showing the problem (possibly
due to a memory upgrade many months ago), but it still has chronic
instability of the connection (drops out for varying intervals), and
often, network-manager doesn't seem aware of the failure - reloading the
driver isn't a reliable solution (sometimes appears to work, often does
not)

FWIW.
