Bug#717005: firmware-iwlwifi: Missing iwlwifi-3160-6.ucode and iwlwifi-7260-6.ucode

2013-07-17 Thread Richard Hartmann
Great, thanks.

If you want me to test the new packages before uploading them, just
let me know. As WiFi is broken with a current kernel atm, it's trivial
to test.

Thanks,
Richard

Severity: wishlist

Since linux 3.8.0 the rtl8723ae driver is distributed with the upstream source;
I still have to submit a bug to ask the kernel team to enable the module
compilation for the debian kernels, but once it is available users will also
need the firmware files `rtlwifi/rtl8723fw.bin` and `rtlwifi/rtl8723fw_B.bin`
which are already available on the upstream repository:

http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/tree/rtlwifi

I'll be grateful if they are included on this package when possible.

Thanks in advance,

  Sergio.

Dear maintainers,

linux-image-3.9-1-amd64 (on a different machine) tells me I need to
install a package providing iwlwifi-3160-6.ucode and
iwlwifi-7260-6.ucode .

This package is the obvious candidate for carrying these files.

Thanks for your work,

These files are for firmware ABI version 6, which apparently was never
released. There are firmware files for these chips with ABI version 7.
I'll add that firmware and update the driver so that's what it expects.

Ben.

Package: linux-kbuild-3.10
Version: 3.10-1
Severity: important

debian/build/scripts/mod/modpost passes getline pointers to
uninitialized name and name_len variables, leading to crashes under
some circumstances. According to getline's manpage, initializing name
to NULL should let the call reliably succeed, albeit with a memory
leak (which you can probably ignore in this case). Could you please
look into it?

Thanks!

Package: linux-kbuild-2.6
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Hi,

attached is a patch for the build-linux-kbuild.sh referenced from
http://wiki.debian.org/HowToRebuildAnOfficialDebianKernelPackage

It adds support for -rcX kernels by doing version mangling from -rcX to
~rcX as needed by Debian.

Also it would be nice if the build-linux-kbuild.sh would be kept in the
SVN repository and a comment like the following be added to the script:

  # The latest version of this script can be retrived via
  # svn export /build-linux-kbuild.sh

This script is not part of the package and there is no point in adding
it to the package. Unfortunately, linux-tools usually needs actual code
changes to work with a new upstream version.

No problem; I quite understand, as my own debugging inconveniently
encountered crashes *only* under module-assistant. :-/ I wound up
contriving to use a wrapper script that arranged to run the modpost
binary under Valgrind to help track the problem down.

Sorry about that. I had assumed that Chris's change to the modpost
wrapper was sufficient to make it work for 3.10, but then after
uploading linux I found that it wasn't. So I was in a bit of a hurry to
get that done and upload linux-tools. Surprisingly, an amd64 build
worked, so I didn't notice this.

Well it sounds like you have done everything that should be needed,
but I don't really know the details of how Debian Live boots. So
you will just have to wait for an answer on that list.

Re: Re: failure to insert the vfat kernel module

2013-07-17 Thread atar

Hi there!!

Thanks you again about your kind help!!

OK, So I've read the Wikipedia article about the Union file system and
understood at least basically what things are supposed. but, please be
noted that I've edited and modified the new kernel's image name not
through the union filesystem interface (which in my case is the 'aufs'
filesystem) but through another writable filesystem and the changes are
written directly to the physical data and not to a copy of them which live
in the Union filesystem. I've also did a 'find' search and found the new
initrd.img which is corresponding to my new kernel image and I've
configured Syslinux to load also the new initrd.img, so why now does the
error persist to exist?

BTW, my new kernel image name was: 'vmlinuz.2.6.32-5-686'

Hope you have a solution! (I have posted this question in the live Debian
mailing list as you've advised me, but no one refer to it...).

Thanks in advance!!

atar.

See . Debian Live uses this
to allow updates to the base image without actually overwriting it.

Right, I don't ever expect to add any new hardware support to

Bug#709647: [PATCH 046/145] genirq: Fix can_request_irq() for IRQs without an action

2013-07-17 Thread Kamal Mostafa
3.8.13.5 -stable review patch. If anyone has any objections, please let me
know.

--

From: Ben Hutchings

commit 2779db8d37d4b542d9ca2575f5f178dbeaca6c86 upstream.

Commit 02725e7471b8 ('genirq: Use irq_get/put functions'),
inadvertently changed can_request_irq() to return 0 for IRQs that have
no action. This causes pcibios_lookup_irq() to select only IRQs that
already have an action with IRQF_SHARED set, or to fail if there are
none. Change can_request_irq() to return 1 for IRQs that have no
action (if the first two conditions are met).

Bug#704564: radeon UVD

2013-07-17 Thread Tomas Pospisek

Some notes about the radeon firmware update:

Mikhail Kshevetskiy let me know that I must replace *all* Radeon firmware
files that the kernel/driver is looking for - this can be seen in dmesg:

  ...
platform radeon_cp.0: firmware: agent loaded radeon/CAICOS_pfp.bin into memory
platform radeon_cp.0: firmware: agent loaded radeon/CAICOS_me.bin into memory
  etc...

So backed up the existing ones in /lib/firmware/radeon and replaced them
with new ones from http://people.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/radeon_ucode/ and

rebooted. Which went well.

The reason I had a try at upgrading the firmware is also that sometimes
for unknow reason my laptop starts blowing hot air like crazy. top
and powertop are showing a laptop that's mostly asleep, however I have the
suspicion that it's the Radeon chip that goes berserk despite being
switched *off*:

  $ dmesg | grep radeon
  ...
  radeon: switched off

So I hoped maybe a new firmware would help. It doesn't. Since HP has
installed a BIOS for idiots (TM) on my Pavillon dv7 6130ez one can not
hard switch off the discrete radeon card on it. This doesn't work either:

  # echo "profile" > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method
  # echo "low" > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile
  # cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/radeon_pm_info
  default engine clock: 75 kHz
  current engine clock: 870800 kHz
  default memory clock: 775000 kHz
  current memory clock: 24970 kHz
  voltage: 1100 mV
  PCIE lanes: 16

the discrete Radeon card is going on in it's meaningless business of
transforming electricity into heat and fan noise.

Unless some of these backports are known to fix data loss or
something, I think it makes sense to close.

Ben, do you plan further driver backports to oldstable or shall we close
the bug?

Cheers,

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.26-22lenny1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system (the system will no longer boot)

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Hello,

with various kernels, starting with at least 2.6.24 (Etch), including
linux-image-2.6.26-bpo.2-686-bigmem 2.6.26-21~bpo40+1 and the
currently running kernel, I get file system corruption that is not
recoverable by the ext3 journal. On reboot, the machines hang and
require manual fsck'ing file systems. The affected hardware varies:
Systems with mdadm'ed raid1 PATA or SATA disks and hardware raid1 with
SCSI disks (SCA variant) at least are both affected, and across
different CPU families (P4, Xeons), there is no common piece of
hardware that I could attribute this effect to. But the common factor
is that the affected file systems are sometimes heavily loaded with
lots of small I/O. The machines are neither memory nor cpu starved, and
even disk performance is quite acceptable.

For the machine indicated below, the problem started with the kernel
immediately preceeding this one.

Due to the impact of this problem, severity 'important' is about the
least reasonable severity.

Kind regards,
--Toni++

Bug#678696: Your patch works

2013-07-17 Thread Vincent Smeets

Hi Goswin,

I had reported the bug #712984 which has been merged with this bug #678696.

I am using Debian/Testing and have initramfs-tools-0.113 and
lvm2_2.02.95-7 installed. I have my root and swap on logical volumes of
the lvm. This configuration didn't work for the new 3.9 kernel.

Now, I have used your patch initramfs-tools-0.106.events.patch and
created a NMU package for initramfs-tools. I also added your lmv2 script
as
lvm2-2.02.95/debian/tree/lvm2/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-block/lvm2
and created there a NMU package too. Using those updated packages, I
could boot my system using the new kernel.

So as a test report: Your changes do work.

Regards,
Vincent Smeets

Bug#717195: linux-kbuild-3.10: modpost wrapper crashes due to bad getline call

2013-07-17 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Package: linux-kbuild-3.10
Version: 3.10-1
Severity: important

debian/build/scripts/mod/modpost passes getline pointers to
uninitialized name and name_len variables, leading to crashes under
some circumstances. According to getline's manpage, initializing name
to NULL should let the call reliably succeed, albeit with a memory
leak (which you can probably ignore in this case). Could you please
look into it?

Thanks!

Yes, I will try those patches over the weekend; thanks for pointing
them out to me. I think I will be able to tell quickly if it has helped
or not.

If it really is the same problem, the quickest way I've found to trigger
it is using Josm with the Bing Sat overlay enabled. Lots of satellite
imagery tiles are downloaded into /tmp. Every few minutes of working
seems to trigger this bug, locking up all accesses to /tmp, but it seems
to recover by itself after a minute or so.

xfce4-terminal is very sensitive to this; trying to display more than
~25 lines of output (like the output of `dmesg` or `ps ax`) freezes the
terminal window (it may be trying to write scrollback history in /tmp).
But if I pipe output to `less` instead it is fully usable.

Other triggers for this seem to be iceweasel sometimes (if there are
many, many tabs open) or rarely qjackctl (once every few weeks).
Killing the responsible process makes the system immediately responsive
again.

Bug#717142: Switching from X to text VT incurs a long delay (regression from 3.9)

2013-07-17 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.10.1-1
Severity: normal

In kernel 3.9, switches between X and a text VT occurred instantly. In
3.10, switching from a text VT to X occurs instantly, but switching from
X to a text VT incurs a delay of about a second or so.
