Bug#501118: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686: Thinkpad i1300/1310: kernel panic on boot
Something very odd just happened. I just did an upgrade of all my packages to the latest testing: a new kernel, the new grub, and I think some other base system stuff came through as well. Now all my kernels boot just fine. I wonder if there was some corruption in the file system, which was just fixed up by shiny new packages? The debsums command is in the package of the same name. For the record, I ran debsums against all my recent kernels, and got no complaints. > > > Was this a fresh installation of Debian 5.0 "lenny" or an upgrade > > > from an earlier version? > > > > Definitely not a fresh install, its an upgrade that goes back some > > years, currently running up-to-date "testing". > > > > > Is there any other operating system installed on this machine that > > > works properly? That will be the first thing I try if I start having trouble again, although unfortunately 64M is soldered onto the motherboard, as I recall. I would be skeptical about my hardrive, except I was getting the same behavior from two different hardrives. Another data point: I just popped in another hard drive with a more extensive list of kernels, and the newest Debian kernel that does not lock up is 2.6.24-1. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#507629: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686: kernel & gcc incompatible: vmware install headache
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686 Version: 2.6.26-10 Severity: normal I am trying to install VMware Server, and get the following error during config: "Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.1.3", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.3.2". Bug#497354: ALSA: snd_intel8x0 broken on some boots
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686 Version: 2.6.26-3 Severity: important Since I installed 2.6.26 on this machine, I have booted several times, and twice sound has been unusable. Any music I play, for instance, sounds like it is playing far in the background against a foreground of static and crackling. If I bring up kmix there appears to be TWO sound cards: * the correct one: Intel 82801CA-ICH3 * pcsp The "pcsp" entry in kmix has only one channel I can adjust, called "Master", which does seem to have an effect on sound level. This one has definitely been overcome by events. A while back I tested the card on a Windows machine, where it also seemed to have stopped working, so I came to the conclusion that the card was broken and threw it out. No idea whether breakage occurred before or after I reported this bug. If you have no other testers/reporters, you might as well just close the bug. Bug#462484: linux-image-2.6.23-1-686: usb mouse broken on X20 (intermittent)
Package: linux-image-2.6.23-1-686 Version: 2.6.23-2 Severity: normal On my Thinkpad X20, frequently after booting my usb mouse responds in a very sluggish and jumpy manner, making it basically unuseable. At the same time, the stick mouse (which I hate using) works normally. This has been going on for a while, at least the last couple of kernels. Sometimes I can restore function by unplugging and replugging the USB mouse, but not reliably, and even then, after replugging it will not respond at all for some great length of time until some unknown event causes it to come to life. -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 2.6.23-1-686 (Debian 2.6.23-2) ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.1.3 20071209 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.2-18)) #1 SMP Fri Dec 21 13:57:07 UTC 2007 ** cmdline: root=/dev/hda2 ro resume=/dev/hda4 ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: usb usb1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice hub 1-0:1.0: USB hub found hub 1-0:1.0: 2 ports detected Floppy drive(s): fd0 is 1.44M FDC 0 is a National Semiconductor PC87306 ACPI: PCI Interrupt :00:08.2[C] -> Link [LNKC] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11 firewire_ohci: Added fw-ohci device :00:08.2, OHCI version 1.0 PIIX4: IDE controller at PCI slot :00:07.1 PIIX4: chipset revision 1 PIIX4: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later ide0: BM-DMA at 0x1800-0x1807, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio ide1: BM-DMA at 0x1808-0x180f, BIOS settings: hdc:pio, hdd:pio Probing IDE interface ide0... usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2 hda: IC25N030ATCS04-0, ATA DISK drive Marking TSC unstable due to: possible TSC halt in C2. Bug#444734: linux-image-2.6.21-2-686: pcd module brings system to its knees
Package: linux-image-2.6.21-2-686 Version: 2.6.21-6 Severity: normal I have an old HP SureStore CD-Writer Plus 7200e CD parallel interface CD burner that some years back used to work just fine with Debian. I just dusted it off, and the drivers fail badly. When I manually load the "pcd" driver, I hear the drive spinning, then an "events" process quickly grabs 99+% of CPU and the whole system becomes so sluggish that I barely retain sufficient control to type halt in a terminal. The halt process was so slow that I finally had to power down. Unplugging the external drive has no effect, suggesting that something in the driver is spinning. -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 2.6.21-2-686 (Debian 2.6.21-6) ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.1.3 20070629 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.2-13)) #1 SMP Wed Jul 11 03:53:02 UTC 2007 ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: pccard: CardBus card inserted into slot 0 pccard: PCMCIA card inserted into slot 1 ohci_hcd: 2006 August 04 USB 1.1 'Open' Host Controller (OHCI) Driver PCI: Enabling device :02:00.0 ( -> 0002) ACPI: PCI Interrupt :02:00.0[A] -> Link [LNKA] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11 PCI: Setting latency timer of device :02:00.0 to 64 ohci_hcd :02:00.0: OHCI Host Controller ohci_hcd :02:00.0: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 2 ohci_hcd :02:00.0: irq 11, io mem 0x2400 usb usb2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice hub 2-0:1.0: USB hub found hub 2-0:1.0: 3 ports detected input: PS/2 Generic Mouse as /class/input/input2 PCI: Enabling device :02:00.1 ( -> 0002) ACPI: PCI Interrupt :02:00.1[B] -> Link [LNKA] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11 PCI: Setting latency timer of device :02:00.1 to 64 ohci_hcd :02:00.1: OHCI Host Controller ohci_hcd :02:00.1: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 3 ohci_hcd :02:00.1: irq 11, io mem 0x24001000 usb usb3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice hub 3-0:1.0: USB hub found hub 3-0:1.0: 2 ports detected PCI: Enabling device :02:00.2 ( -> 0002) ACPI: PCI Interrupt :02:00.2[C] -> Link [LNKA] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11 ehci_hcd :02:00.2: EHCI Host Controller ehci_hcd :02:00.2: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 4 ehci_hcd :02:00.2: irq 11, io mem 0x24002000 ehci_hcd :02:00.2: USB 2.0 started, EHCI 1.00, driver 10 Dec 2004 usb usb4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice hub 4-0:1.0: USB hub found hub 4-0:1.0: 5 ports detected ACPI: PCI Interrupt :00:05.0[A] -> Link [LNKA] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11 cs: IO port probe 0x100-0x3af: clean. cs: IO port probe 0x3e0-0x4ff: excluding 0x4d0-0x4d7 cs: IO port probe 0x820-0x8ff: clean. cs: IO port probe 0xc00-0xcf7: clean. cs: IO port probe 0xa00-0xaff: clean. cs: memory probe 0xa000-0xa0ff: clean. pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia1.0 cs: IO port probe 0x100-0x3af: clean. cs: IO port probe 0x3e0-0x4ff: excluding 0x4d0-0x4d7 cs: IO port probe 0x820-0x8ff: clean. cs: IO port probe 0xc00-0xcf7: clean. cs: IO port probe 0xa00-0xaff: clean. cs46xx: failure waiting for FIFO command to complete gameport: CS46xx Gameport is pci:00:05.0/gameport0, speed 1807kHz ASIC rev 1,<6>eth1: Megahertz 574B at io 0x300, irq 3, hw_addr 00:50:DA:CF:A5:7C. 64K FIFO split 1:1 Rx:Tx, autoselect MII interface. udev: renamed network interface eth1 to eth6 Adding 279680k swap on /dev/hda6. Maks, I just gave it a try with 2.6.21-2-686, and it would appear that whatever was stepped-on is now fixed. I have been running for about 12 hours with the new kernel now and am not seeing the problem. You can go ahead and close this bug report if you like. Bug#425995: ALSA: internal sound card does not work if USB headset plugged in at boot
Package: linux-image-2.6.20-1-686 Version: 2.6.20-3 Severity: normal I am not sure if this happens every time, but it has happened to me more then once on two different Thinkpads: if I leave my USB headset plugged in when I reboot, my Thinkpad a21m's internal soundcard ( Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24) seems to disappear even though the driver (snd_cs46xx) is loaded. If I bring up either kmix or gnome-alsamixer, the internal card is not visible as a choice. 'rmmod snd_cs46xx' followed by 'modprobe snd_cs46xx' seems to restore order. $ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX Host bridge (rev 03) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX AGP bridge (rev 03) 00:02.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1450 (rev 03) 00:02.1 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1450 (rev 03) 00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro 100] (rev 09) 00:03.1 Serial controller: Xircom Mini-PCI V.90 56k Modem 00:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24 [CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator] (rev 01) 00:07.0 Bridge: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ISA (rev 02) 00:07.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE (rev 01) 00:07.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB (rev 01) 00:07.3 Bridge: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ACPI (rev 03) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x (rev 64) -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 2.6.20-1-686 (Debian 2.6.20-3) ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-21)) #1 SMP Tue Apr 24 21:52:11 UTC 2007 ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: Yenta: Using INTVAL to route CSC interrupts to PCI Yenta: Routing CardBus interrupts to PCI Yenta TI: socket :00:02.1, mfunc 0x1000, devctl 0x66 irda_init() NET: Registered protocol family 23 Yenta: ISA IRQ mask 0x0438, PCI irq 11 Socket status: 3006 piix4_smbus :00:07.3: Found :00:07.3 device piix4_smbus :00:07.3: IBM system detected; this module may corrupt your serial eeprom! Bug#409736: NFS upload causes unrelated applications to hang
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-3-amd64 Version: 2.6.18-7 I am using Debian Etch on a web server I maintain, and just came across what appears to be a serious kernel bug. When I attempt to upload a large (~1.5 GB) file to an NFS server, the transfer gets about half done, and then it hangs, along with several unrelated applications, for example apache, du, and w. I tried doing this three times, with various nfs settings, and the same thing happened each time. The unrelated applications are not using NFS for anything. They remain frozen for about 10 minutes, then finally spring back to life. NFS is completely unusable for me as a result. After some searching, I found the following message on the Linux kernel mailing list which seems to describe exactly the problem I was experiencing: http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/12/14/448 Unfortunately this is a production server, so I can't install a debug kernel or try to reproduce the problem again. I don't have a non-production server available to try this on either. Here's my kernel version: Linux servilo.ikso.net 2.6.18-3-amd64 #1 SMP Mon Dec 4 17:04:37 CET 2006 x86_64 GNU/Linux My shared C library version is 2.3.6.ds1-10. The server is a Xeon 3060 with 2 GB RAM and hardware RAID. Let me know if there are any other details that would be useful for you. Bug#399822: Acknowledgement (linux-image-2.6.18-1-686: detection of IBM USB mouse flaky)
I would like to declare this bug a hardware problem and suggest that it be closed as such: The Thinkpad that was generating this problem suffered a motherboard meltdown. With the replacement motherboard I am no longer seeing this problem, with the same kernel and mouse. Bug#399822: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686: detection of IBM USB mouse flaky
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686 Version: 2.6.18-3 Severity: normal On my Thinkpad X20, with lspci -v: 00:07.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [UHCI]) Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 11 I/O ports at 1820 [size=32] my IBM USB mouse is almost never detected on boot. Some minutes (or even hours) later it spontaneously starts working, for example: kernel: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2 kernel: usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice kernel: hub 1-1:1.0: USB hub found kernel: hub 1-1:1.0: 2 ports detected kernel: usb 1-1.1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 kernel: usb 1-1.1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice kernel: usbcore: registered new driver hiddev kernel: input: USB Mouse as /class/input/input3 kernel: input: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [USB Mouse] on usb-:00:07.2-1.1 kernel: usbcore: registered new driver usbhid kernel: drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: v2.6:USB HID core driver I seem to have been able to provoke detection by plugging in other USB devices, "cat /proc/bus/usb/001/001", and even "lsbusb" seems to have had this effect once. But I have found no reliable method to manually get it working, and I can't see what is causing the spontaneous detection. Other USB devices seem to be working normally, as does the stick mouse. Bug#396513: kernel-2.6.18: DHCP fails with stock kernel image, works with roll-my-own kernel
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686 Version: 2.6.18-3 Severity: normal I have been rolling my own kernels on this machine (Thinkpad A21m, Debian testing) for a long time, but really don't need to anymore, so I thought I would install the stock kernel images. Alas, with the stock images (both linux-image-2.6.17-2-686 and linux-image-2.6.18-1-686) my network interfaces (both mini-PCI and PCMCIA) refuse to play with DHCP. If I run tcpdump on the DHCP server end, I can see the DHCP request coming in from my machine and the response going out. But tcpdump running locally on the A21m does not see the response from the server at all. But, if I boot back into my home-made linux-image-2.6.17-a21m.26, everything works fine. The only difference is which kernel has been booted, all other hardware and software configuration is identical. There are no interesting errors in syslog, the only visible ailment is that DHCP times out (and tcpdump indicates the response packets are disappearing into the void somehow). -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.17-a21m.26 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages linux-image-2.6.18-1-686 depends on: ii initramfs-tools [linux-initra 0.84 tools for generating an initramfs ii module-init-tools 3.2.2-3tools for managing Linux kernel mo Versions of packages linux-image-2.6.18-1-686 recommends: pn libc6-i686 (no description available) -- debconf information: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/bootloader-error-2.6.18-1-686: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/elilo-initrd-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/bootloader-test-error-2.6.18-1-686: * linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/lilo-initrd-2.6.18-1-686: false linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/old-system-map-link-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/abort-install-2.6.18-1-686: shared/kernel-image/really-run-bootloader: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/old-initrd-link-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/old-dir-initrd-link-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/overwriting-modules-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/depmod-error-initrd-2.6.18-1-686: false linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/initrd-2.6.18-1-686: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/abort-overwrite-2.6.18-1-686: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/already-running-this-2.6.18-1-686: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/depmod-error-2.6.18-1-686: false linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/prerm/removing-running-kernel-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/bootloader-initrd-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/create-kimage-link-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/lilo-has-ramdisk: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/failed-to-move-modules-2.6.18-1-686: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/prerm/would-invalidate-boot-loader-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/kimage-is-a-directory: -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#357616: Acknowledgement (linux-source-2.6.15: atmel_cs has stopped working for Belkin PCMCIA MANFID=01bf, 3302)
The original subject of this bug report was kernel 2.6.15/atmel_cs module not working properly on my Thinkpad a21m. As of kernel 2.6.16, this card/module now seems to be back and running again on the a21m, with no configuration changes by me. So now I am trying to get this Belkin F5D6020ver2 card working on my Thinkpad 600e. Kernels 2.6.16 and 2.6.17 both failed with the same symptoms, so I will report specifics about 2.6.17. The behavior I am seeing on the 600e is that the modules seem to load fine and produce no errors. But DHCP times out and cannot successfully get an IP, just as used to be the case on the a21m. I have another wireless card that works just fine on this 600e, so I still think the problem lies within the kernel. -- On the 600e (which does not work) I see the following: $ uname -r: 2.6.17-tp600e.7 /var/log/syslog: kernel: pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.0 kernel: eth0: Atmel at76c50x. Version 0.98. MAC 00:30:bd:d0:16:d0 $ cat /proc/driver/atmel Driver version: 0.98 Firmware version: 4.1 build 13 Firmware location: atmel_at76c502e-wpa.bin loaded by hotplug MAC memory type:EEPROM Regulatory domain: USA Host CRC checking: Off WPA-capable firmware: Yes Current state: Scanning $ lsmod | grep atmel atmel_cs7488 1 atmel 31844 1 atmel_cs pcmcia 34308 5 atmel_cs firmware_class 9568 2 atmel, pcmcia crc32 4224 2 atmel, pcmcia pcmcia_core37584 4 atmel_cs,pcmcia,yenta_socket,rsrc_nonstatic On the a21m (which now does work for this same card) I am seeing: # uname -r: 2.6.16-a21m.19 /var/log/syslog: kernel: pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.0 cardmgr[2441]: socket 0: Belkin F5D6020ver2 with ATMEL chipset kernel: eth1: Atmel at76c50x. Version 0.98. MAC 00:30:bd:d0:16:d0 # cat /proc/driver/atmel Driver version: 0.98 Firmware version: 4.1 build 13 Firmware location: atmel_at76c502e-wpa.bin loaded by hotplug MAC memory type:EEPROM Regulatory domain: USA Host CRC checking: Off WPA-capable firmware: Yes Current state: Ready # lsmod | grep atmel atmel_cs6240 1 atmel 28676 1 atmel_cs pcmcia 26900 5 atmel_cs --- A couple noteworthy differences are that the working a21m has fewer modules loaded, and seems to still be using cardmgr, which I believe is deprecated but apparently still works better then the new kernel? Both machines are still using hotplug, no udev. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#357616: linux-source-2.6.15: atmel_cs has stopped working for Belkin PCMCIA MANFID=01bf, 3302
Package: linux-source-2.6.15 Version: 2.6.15-8 Severity: normal Upon moving from linux-source-2.6.12 to linux-source-2.6.15 with no other configuration changes, this wireless card now silently fails: # pccardctl info PRODID_1="Belkin" PRODID_2="11Mbps-Wireless-Notebook-Network-Adapter" PRODID_3="" PRODID_4="" MANFID=01bf,3302 FUNCID=6 No apparent errors are generated: kernel: pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.0 kernel: eth1: Atmel at76c50x. This card just worked with the 2.6.12 kernel, and I have another wireless card that works fine with this (2.6.15) kernel using the hostap driver. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15-a21m.17 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages linux-source-2.6.15 depends on: ii binutils 2.16.1cvs20060117-1 The GNU assembler, linker and bina ii bzip21.0.3-2 high-quality block-sorting file co Versions of packages linux-source-2.6.15 recommends: ii gcc 4:4.0.2-2 The GNU C compiler ii libc6-dev [libc-dev] 2.3.5-13 GNU C Library: Development Librari ii make 3.80+3.81.b4-1 The GNU version of the "make" util -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
