Bug#501118: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686: Thinkpad i1300/1310: kernel panic on boot

2009-10-10 Thread Clayton
Something very odd just happened. I just did an upgrade of all my
packages to the latest testing: a new kernel, the new grub, and I think
some other base system stuff came through as well. Now all my kernels
boot just fine. I wonder if there was some corruption in the file
system, which was just fixed up by shiny new packages?

For the record, I ran debsums against all my recent kernels, and got no
complaints.

That will be the first thing I try if I start having trouble again,
although unfortunately 64M is soldered onto the motherboard, as I
recall. I would be skeptical about my hardrive, except I was getting
the same behavior from two different hardrives.

Baffled,

Another data point: I just popped in another hard drive with a more
extensive list of kernels, and the newest Debian kernel that does not
lock up is 2.6.24-1.

No transcription error, I just tried again and still get "e6 "

Definitely not a fresh install, its an upgrade that goes back some
years, currently running up-to-date "testing".

Even better, it boots and runs fine with currently installed kernel
2.6.22, and I believe older kernels. However, in the name of
thoroughness, I have also run memtest as you suggested, and it passed.

Afraid not, a few months back during my last move I relocated the drive
in question from the shelf to the recycler. It just did not seem
worth the effort of moving.

Bug#507629: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686: kernel & gcc incompatible: vmware install headache

2008-12-02 Thread clayton
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686
Version: 2.6.26-10
Severity: normal

I am trying to install VMware Server, and get the following error during
config:

"Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.1.3", while you are trying to
use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.3.2". This configuration is not recommended
and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly
same compiler as one used for building your kernel."

It would seem an out-of-sync kernel and gcc is not an optimal configuration
for the future Stable. (I am running testing.)

Hi, I am afraid I can no longer verify, as the card in question stopped
working completely (even in other OSes) some time ago and I threw it
away. (Which is too bad because it is one of the few cards I have found
that accepts Master mode.)

Bug#501118: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686: Thinkpad i1300/1310: kernel panic on boot

2008-10-04 Thread clayton
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686
Version: 2.6.26-5
Severity: important

Several attempts to boot into a newly installed linux-image-2.6.26-1-686
resulted in a
screen full of mostly hex gibberish followed by "kernel panic".

I would be happy to type in that whole screen of hex if anyone is interested in
seeing
it.

Bug#497354: ALSA: snd_intel8x0 broken on some boots

2008-08-31 Thread clayton
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686
Version: 2.6.26-3
Severity: important

Since I installed 2.6.26 on this machine, I have booted several times,
and twice sound has been unusable. Any music I play, for instance,
sounds like it is playing far in the background against a foreground of
static and crackling. If I bring up kmix there appears to be TWO sound
cards:

* the correct one: Intel 82801CA-ICH3
* pcsp

The "pcsp" entry in kmix has only one channel I can adjust, called
"Master", which does seem to have an effect on sound level.

This part of the syslog seems suggestive:

This one has definitely been overcome by events. A while back I tested
the card on a Windows machine, where it also seemed to have stopped
working, so I came to the conclusion that the card was broken and threw
it out. No idea whether breakage occurred before or after I reported
this bug.

If you have no other testers/reporters, you might as well just close
the bug.

Same behavior with 2.6.24-rc8: on first boot, usb mouse broken as above.

Bug#462484: linux-image-2.6.23-1-686: usb mouse broken on X20 (intermittent)

2008-01-24 Thread clayton
Package: linux-image-2.6.23-1-686
Version: 2.6.23-2
Severity: normal

On my Thinkpad X20, frequently after booting my usb mouse responds in a
very sluggish and jumpy manner, making it basically unuseable. At the
same time, the stick mouse (which I hate using) works normally.

This has been going on for a while, at least the last couple of kernels.

Sometimes I can restore function by unplugging and replugging the USB
mouse, but not reliably, and even then, after replugging it will not
respond at all for some great length of time until some unknown event
causes it to come to life.

As of this kernel image, suddenly my Thinkpad A21m's sound card is no
longer supported. On boot, no snd-* modules are loaded (those showing in
the logs below come from a USB headset).

$ locate snd-cs46xx

Bug#444734: linux-image-2.6.21-2-686: pcd module brings system to its knees

2007-09-30 Thread clayton
Package: linux-image-2.6.21-2-686
Version: 2.6.21-6
Severity: normal

I have an old HP SureStore CD-Writer Plus 7200e CD parallel
interface CD burner that some years back used to work just fine with
Debian. I just dusted it off, and the drivers fail badly.

When I manually load the "pcd" driver, I hear the drive spinning, then
an "events" process quickly grabs 99+% of CPU and the whole system
becomes so sluggish that I barely retain sufficient control to type halt
in a terminal. The halt process was so slow that I finally had to power
down.

Unplugging the external drive has no effect, suggesting that something
in the driver is spinning.

Maks,

I just gave it a try with 2.6.21-2-686, and it would appear that
whatever was stepped-on is now fixed. I have been running for about 12
hours with the new kernel now and am not seeing the problem.

You can go ahead and close this bug report if you like.

2.6.21 failed on the first boot.

2.6.22-rc2 passed on the first boot, then failed on the second.

This problem remains open as of 2.6.22-rc2.

Bug#425995: ALSA: internal sound card does not work if USB headset plugged in at boot

2007-05-25 Thread clayton
Package: linux-image-2.6.20-1-686
Version: 2.6.20-3
Severity: normal

I am not sure if this happens every time, but it has happened to me more
then once on two different Thinkpads: if I leave my USB headset plugged
in when I reboot, my Thinkpad a21m's internal soundcard ( Cirrus Logic
CS 4614/22/24) seems to disappear even though the driver (snd_cs46xx) is
loaded. If I bring up either kmix or gnome-alsamixer, the internal card
is not visible as a choice.

'rmmod snd_cs46xx' followed by 'modprobe snd_cs46xx' seems to restore
order.

2.6.20 continues to be broken. A 2.6.17 kernel works just fine, no huge time
displacements.

Bug#409736: NFS upload causes unrelated applications to hang

2007-05-05 Thread Clayton Smith
I just wanted to confirm that this problem still exists in the latest
version of the kernel (2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch1). Also, I found what seems
to be the same bug in Ubuntu:

Not sure what your criteria for proof is, in a previous e-mail I said "I am
using the latest and greatest standard Debian kernel source from testing."

Is this enough?:

Bug#409736: NFS upload causes unrelated applications to hang

2007-02-04 Thread Clayton Smith

Package: linux-image-2.6.18-3-amd64
Version: 2.6.18-7

I am using Debian Etch on a web server I maintain, and just came across
what appears to be a serious kernel bug. When I attempt to upload a
large (~1.5 GB) file to an NFS server, the transfer gets about half
done, and then it hangs, along with several unrelated applications, for
example apache, du, and w. I tried doing this three times, with various
nfs settings, and the same thing happened each time. The unrelated
applications are not using NFS for anything. They remain frozen for
about 10 minutes, then finally spring back to life. NFS is completely
unusable for me as a result.

After some searching, I found the following message on the Linux kernel
mailing list which seems to describe exactly the problem I was experiencing:

   http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/12/14/448

Unfortunately this is a production server, so I can't install a debug
kernel or try to reproduce the problem again. I don't have a
non-production server available to try this on either.

Here's my kernel version:

   Linux servilo.ikso.net 2.6.18-3-amd64 #1 SMP Mon Dec 4 17:04:37 CET
2006 x86_64 GNU/Linux

My shared C library version is 2.3.6.ds1-10. The server is a Xeon 3060
with 2 GB RAM and hardware RAID.

Let me know if there are any other details that would be useful for you.

Regards,
Clayton Smith

Bug#399822: Acknowledgement (linux-image-2.6.18-1-686: detection of IBM USB mouse flaky)

2007-01-29 Thread Clayton
I would like to declare this bug a hardware problem and suggest that it be
closed as such:

The Thinkpad that was generating this problem suffered a motherboard meltdown.
With the replacement motherboard I am no longer seeing this problem, with the
same kernel and mouse. I suspect that a slightly flaky USB subsystem was just
one of the symptoms of a lemon motherboard.

Bug#399822: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686: detection of IBM USB mouse flaky

2006-11-22 Thread clayton
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686
Version: 2.6.18-3
Severity: normal

On my Thinkpad X20, with lspci -v:
00:07.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB (rev
01) (prog-if 00 [UHCI])
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 11
I/O ports at 1820 [size=32]

my IBM USB mouse is almost never detected on boot. Some minutes (or even
hours) later it spontaneously starts working, for example:

kernel: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
kernel: usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
kernel: hub 1-1:1.0: USB hub found
kernel: hub 1-1:1.0: 2 ports detected
kernel: usb 1-1.1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
kernel: usb 1-1.1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
kernel: usbcore: registered new driver hiddev
kernel: input: USB Mouse as /class/input/input3
kernel: input: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [USB Mouse] on usb-:00:07.2-1.1
kernel: usbcore: registered new driver usbhid
kernel: drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: v2.6:USB HID core driver

I seem to have been able to provoke detection by plugging in other USB
devices, "cat /proc/bus/usb/001/001", and even "lsbusb" seems to have
had this effect once. But I have found no reliable method to manually
get it working, and I can't see what is causing the spontaneous
detection.

Other USB devices seem to be working normally, as does the stick mouse.

My IBM USB mouse:
Model: MO32BO
ASM P/N: 24P0496
IBM FRU P/N: 24P0497
S/N: 23-008861

Bug#396513: kernel-2.6.18: DHCP fails with stock kernel image, works with roll-my-own kernel

2006-11-01 Thread clayton
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686
Version: 2.6.18-3
Severity: normal

I have been rolling my own kernels on this machine (Thinkpad A21m,
Debian testing) for a long time, but really don't need to anymore, so I
thought I would install the stock kernel images.

Alas, with the stock images (both linux-image-2.6.17-2-686 and
linux-image-2.6.18-1-686) my network interfaces (both mini-PCI and
PCMCIA) refuse to play with DHCP. If I run tcpdump on the DHCP server
end, I can see the DHCP request coming in from my machine and the
response going out. But tcpdump running locally on the A21m does not see
the response from the server at all.

But, if I boot back into my home-made linux-image-2.6.17-a21m.26,
everything works fine. The only difference is which kernel has been
booted, all other hardware and software configuration is identical.
There are no interesting errors in syslog, the only visible ailment is
that DHCP times out (and tcpdump indicates the response packets are
disappearing into the void somehow).

Bug#383865: linux-source-2.6.17: crash: hostap_cs & orinoco_cs both loading for same card?

2006-08-19 Thread clayton
Package: linux-source-2.6.17
Version: 2.6.17-6
Severity: normal

I have a wireless PCMCIA card that works fine on another machine using kernel 2.
6.16/hotplug, but locks this machine up hard every time using 2.6.16 and 2.6.17
and udev (requires power down and reboot). Crash occurs both on card insertion a
nd on boot with card already inserted.

On the machine where the card works:
cardctl ident:
Socket 0:
product info: "INTERSIL", "HFA384x/IEEE", "Version 01.02", ""
manfid: 0x0156, 0x0002

syslog on working machine:

On the machine that crashes, normally there is nothing interesting written to th
e logs after I reboot. However, syslog tails sometimes show a few lines at crash
 time:

syslog tail showed this one time on crash (2.6.16 or 2.6.17, not sure):
kernel: pccard: PCMCIA card inserted into slot 0
kernel: cs: memory probe 0xa000-0xa0ff: excluding

kernel: pcmcia: register new device pcmcia0.0
cardmgr[2163]: socket 0: Senao SL-2011CD/SL-2011CDPLUS

another syslog tail (kernel 2.6.17):
kernel: pccard: PCMCIA card inserted into slot 0
kernel: pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.0
kernel: orinoco 0.15rc3 (David Gibson.

And one time I swear I saw what looked like orinoco_cs and hostap_cs loading at
same time, which I am thinking might be the problem?

Bug#357616: Acknowledgement (linux-source-2.6.15: atmel_cs has stopped working for Belkin PCMCIA MANFID=01bf, 3302)

2006-07-09 Thread Clayton
The original subject of this bug report was kernel 2.6.15/atmel_cs module not
working properly on my Thinkpad a21m. As of kernel 2.6.16, this card/module now
seems to be back and running again on the a21m, with no configuration changes
by me.

So now I am trying to get this Belkin F5D6020ver2 card working on my Thinkpad
600e. Kernels 2.6.16 and 2.6.17 both failed with the same symptoms, so I will
report specifics about 2.6.17.

The behavior I am seeing on the 600e is that the modules seem to load fine and
produce no errors. But DHCP times out and cannot successfully get an IP, just
as used to be the case on the a21m. I have another wireless card that works
just fine on this 600e, so I still think the problem lies within the kernel.

--

On the 600e (which does not work) I see the following:

$ uname -r: 2.6.17-tp600e.7

/var/log/syslog:
kernel: pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.0
kernel: eth0: Atmel at76c50x. Version 0.98. MAC 00:30:bd:d0:16:d0

$ cat /proc/driver/atmel
Driver version: 0.98
Firmware version: 4.1 build 13
Firmware location: atmel_at76c502e-wpa.bin loaded by hotplug
MAC memory type:EEPROM
Regulatory domain: USA
Host CRC checking: Off
WPA-capable firmware: Yes
Current state: Scanning

$ lsmod | grep atmel
atmel_cs7488 1
atmel 31844 1 atmel_cs
pcmcia 34308 5 atmel_cs
firmware_class 9568 2 atmel,pcmcia
crc32 4224 2 atmel,pcmcia
pcmcia_core37584 4
atmel_cs,pcmcia,yenta_socket,rsrc_nonstatic

On the a21m (which now does work for this same card) I am seeing:

# uname -r: 2.6.16-a21m.19

/var/log/syslog:
kernel: pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.0
cardmgr[2441]: socket 0: Belkin F5D6020ver2 with ATMEL chipset
kernel: eth1: Atmel at76c50x. Version 0.98. MAC 00:30:bd:d0:16:d0

# cat /proc/driver/atmel
Driver version: 0.98
Firmware version: 4.1 build 13
Firmware location: atmel_at76c502e-wpa.bin loaded by hotplug
MAC memory type:EEPROM
Regulatory domain: USA
Host CRC checking: Off
WPA-capable firmware: Yes
Current state: Ready

# lsmod | grep atmel
atmel_cs6240 1
atmel 28676 1 atmel_cs
pcmcia 26900 5 atmel_cs

---

A couple noteworthy differences are that the working a21m has fewer
modules loaded, and seems to still be using cardmgr, which I believe is
deprecated but apparently still works better then the new kernel? Both
machines are still using hotplug, no udev.

Bug#357616: linux-source-2.6.15: atmel_cs has stopped working for Belkin PCMCIA MANFID=01bf, 3302

2006-03-18 Thread clayton
Package: linux-source-2.6.15
Version: 2.6.15-8
Severity: normal

Upon moving from linux-source-2.6.12 to linux-source-2.6.15 with no
other configuration changes, this wireless card now silently fails:

# pccardctl info
PRODID_1="Belkin"
PRODID_2="11Mbps-Wireless-Notebook-Network-Adapter"
PRODID_3=""
PRODID_4=""
MANFID=01bf,3302
FUNCID=6

No apparent errors are generated:

kernel: pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.0
kernel: eth1: Atmel at76c50x. Version 0.98. MAC 00:30:bd:d0:16:d0

But dhclient consistently times out. This card just worked with the
2.6.12 kernel, and I have another wireless card that works fine with
this (2.6.15) kernel using the hostap driver.
