2.6.12-7 upload ? How far away is 2.6.13-1 ?

2005-09-19 Thread Sven Luther
Hello,

I think it should be time we did a 2.6.12-7 upload, with all the fixes that
those bring in, especially the powerpc64 nvidiafb disabling one, before we do
2.6.13-1.

Not so sure about the 2.6.13-1 status, it should work just fine with yaird (i
am using it here now), and i was really impressed about yaird, it did detect
all my stuff from the start, including the input device, the filesystem
drivers and so on, but i guess most here are more interested in
initramfs-tools, because of the ubuntu connection maybe ?

Anyway, i am in favour of doing a 2.6.12-7 upload tomorrow or so, so if anyone
has anything to say about this, please do so now.

Friendly,

Sven Luther

I have just added the relevant portions of 2.6.13.1 and 2.6.13.2
to SVN, which was the main thing I have outstanding for 2.6.12-7.

The other thing I would like to look at is the various configure
option requests we have floating about. That will probably require
a bit of hacking of split-config to be able to do easily. And
I'm happy for this to wait until post 2.6.12-7.

Any indication if 2.6.12-8 is likely to happen? I'll focus
any changes that I have on 2.6.13-1 until I hear otherwise.

Lastly, its a 3-day week here in Japan. That means less time for me to
do stuff, and I'm run off my feet standing still. So please ping me on
IRC if you need something.

Thanks, ...

Does that mean that 2.6.12-7 is actually releasable ? Anyone has more comment
on it or stuff he wants to go in ? If there is nothing of the sort, i will
upload those on tomorrow.

Hopefully there will be no 2.6.12-8, and we will be able to move directly to
2.6.12-1, so your plan sounds good.

Actually, I think I broke the build with those patches.
I'm looking into it now.

I have removed the aacraid-bad-BUG_ON-fix.patch patch and the build
seems fine now. The patch resolves a problem introduced between 2.6.12
and 2.6.13 when variable FIB size support was added. See Linus' Git tree
7c00ffa314bf0fb0e23858bbebad33b48b6abbb9 for that change.

I have made an i386 build of what is currently in SVN,
its version is 2.6.12-6.hls.2005092100, but the
version is the only thing I changed, just to distinguish
it from the official upload.

So, you think it is ready for upload ? What about the patch you removed, can
we release without it in a sane way ?

Removing the patch that I removed should be quite ok,
it seems to fix a problem that was introduced since 2.6.12.

As for if it is ready for upload? I am not sure. You are
the one propmoting uploading 2.6.12-7. I certainly think
that the addition of the 2.6.13.1 and 2.6.13.2 patches that
I added makes it more ready for upload. So if you though
it was ready yesterday, then yes, its ready today.

I'm doing a 2.6.12-7 build now. I'm happy to upload this
if others are happy. But I am still not entierly sure why
there is a push to get 2.6.12-7 ready, and thus I am not entirely
sure what it should include.

FWIW, I would like to see 2.6.12-7 as basis for the mips kernels in
the next days.

I spoke a bit more to Sven about this on IRC,
and it looks like we will go ahead with what we have.
I have the binaries built (i386) and will upload
once I get a final go-ahead from Sven.

I even tested that they boot and am running one of them now :)

We can do a 2.6.12-8 for it then, since i want to include the powerpc-small
miboot kernel too. What is your take on that ? Can you come discuss your plans
with us on #debian-kernel (oftc).

Sorry, I am a bit confused, does this mean you want to see
a 2.6.12-7 upload ASAP, or you would like the upload to wait a few days?

As it happens svenl had a last minute change, so
I'm untagging it in SVN for now.

You probably misunderstood, I just want a newer kernel-source package
than the current one as a build dependency. We can discuss this and
other things tomorrow in RL. :-)
