ripit doesn't depend on lame or bladeenc. Those are only alternatives
for some encoders. It's an information for $USER that encoding mp3
is possible with those packages. It is not a _must_ to install them
mentioned by the | in the dependency field. I don't want to
recommend them, as I don't recommend mp3 encoding, though. Have a
look at the abcde package. It is done the same. And FYI the last
uploads weren't rejected.

I don't understand why openshot-docs has such a wildly different version
number to your RFS package openshot (1.1.0.alpha1-1).

I think it would make more sense for users if you were to unify the version
numbers upstream, so they can know that they are reading the right
documentation for the version of openshot they have installed. That also
then means that openshot-docs can be build from the same source package,
which saves time and confusion all round.

At least I don't consider this package as long as the preinstal

I'm agree with the "isn't nice", but how can I keep the user savegames
that belong previous to versions, or simply delete it?. Each versions
create a hidden directory named .bygfoot in the /home for savegames,
but each version can't load this savegames, just if this savegame
belong to the same version. I've tried with the script preinst, keep
the previous savegame and then the new version will create its own
.byfoot.

Thanks for taking time.

The game itself should handle this stuff at runtime, the maintainer
scripts have no business touching user's home directories.

Some possible strategies for this:

Version numbers in the file format.

Version numbers in the file/directory names.

More stable or forward compatible file formats. This is my personal favourite.

In addition, please follow the XDG basedir spec wrt home directory
file names and locations:

I totally support this. No packages should directly mess up with
configuration stuff in user's directories when installed or
uninstalled. If the format should be upgraded, it should be done by
the program itself when it is executed by the user -aka. runtime- as
Paul says, not in postinst/prerm/...

Also, users expect not to lose previous saved games when upgrading to
a newer version of the game, so we should do as much as possiible to
avoid that. It is really annoying to be playing a game and lose your
saved data after an upgrade. Players would have the whole right to
complain about it. I would.

Miry

RFS: cba

2010-02-17 Thread pierrot

Dear mentors, debian-science,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package "cba".

* Package name: cba
  Version : 0.3.5-1
  Upstream Author : me
* URL : http://cbeam.sourceforge.net
* License : gpl
  Section : science

It builds these binary packages:
cba - continuous beam analysis

beam analysis is an often performed task in the field of civil
engineering (if that doesn´t sound captivating to you, save your time
and don´t bother checking the package).
in this new version i added a small material and section database (xml),
to make structural design of beams made of homogeneous material (such as
steel or wood) possible.

The package appears to be lintian clean.

The upload would fix these bugs: 561090

My motivation for maintaining this package is:
as an engineer you run tight on redmond rails, software for structural
design under linux is rare. the same goes for every other "special field
software" i suppose. a bit more of it could help preventing "penguins"
and "apaches" from scuffling to work sadly.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/c/cba
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable
main contrib non-free

- dget http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/c/cba/cba_0.3.5-1.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Kind regards

Oh, I forgot to say one thing. If possible, the stored game data
should be arch-independent (that means independent of the endianess
and word size of the processor), so that if you take your $HOME from
your PowerPC computer to your AMD64 one, or if your $HOME is shared
among different computers, things still work.

If I may nit-pick a bit more: You could bring the patch header a bit

Dear Mentors,

I kindly request you to review the new version of my package "lbzip2". It
seems to be unstable-lintian-clean.

Changes in this version:

* New upstream release fixes a negligible probability race between the

Tools for creating / editing manpages

2010-02-17 Thread Pablo Duboue
Hi,

A while back I asked in #debian-mentors about tools / editors to build man
pages without to learn the groff / nroff / etc.

I had many useful suggestions and I'd like to summarize the approach I
followed at the end as a way to thank the people who step in to help
(particularly René Mayorga, as he suggested DocBook and docbook2man).

As I was adapting information from a Web page to a man page, so the pandoc
package comes handy:

  pandoc --from=html --to=docbook input.html output.xml

the XML produced is not the type of DocBook input taken by other tools that
produce man pages; here another package comes handy, doclifter. This program
tries to infer logical markup from presentational markup. If you take any
existing man page, you can get a working skeleton:

  doclifter manpage.1

To produce man pages from DocBook source, the best results I got came from
docbook2x package:

  docbook2x-man man-page-in-docbook-format.xml

Finally, I tried two editors for editing the xml:

  xmlcopyeditor

and

  conglomerate

I recommend xmlcopyeditor.

HTH,

Pablo
