It did not happen to me in neither of my computers. Could you give me

* You should have something like "On Debian systems, the complete text of the

debian/copyright and then just mention that your packaging is licensed under

Done.

docs/todo.txt

I don't see what users of your package would find useful in those.
history.html could be repackaged as the upstream changelog I suppose if you'd
like to do that.

Yeap, I think you are right. I included those files thinking that
maybe a user could care about them. But I do not have any problem in
not including them.

* I personally think you should distribute the menu smc.xpm icon in the "smc"
package instead of the smc-data. This will also allow you to avoid using a
lintian override.

Done.

* You have debian/README.source, but you don't install it into the
/usr/share/doc/.

Done.

* And now the main point for the NEW queue - there are several licenses in
docs/licenses. Some of the look like the licenses for the software smc links
against that you don't distribute in your orig.tar.gz. I think you should
remove erroneous licenses from the tarball since you are already repackaging
it to include the data/music files, so you can do that easily. Only leave
those licenses that correspond to the code shipped in your source package. For
that code you must have a corresponding entry in the debian/copyright files.
Please do this and double-check all code in the tarball for the licensing.

Done.

After the above is addressed I'd be happy to upload the package for you. It
doesn't mean that ftpmasters won't find something else to shoot the package
down for - this is what I personally found.

Question about how to handle a RC bug.

2007-03-14 Thread Muammar Wadih El Khatib Rodriguez

Hi *,

I uploaded a new upstream version of a package which is called CEGUI
(I did it two months ago). There is another package which depends on
CEGUI to autobuild, this package is ogre. The problem is that ogre's
version in Debian is too old and that's why it is not autobuilding
well against the new version of cegui. You can find the report in:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=43

I was researching into ogre's forums and what I wrote above is the
problem. So, my question is: How should I proceed? I mean, should I
upload the previous version of cegui to unstable? or what is the
correct procedure to handle that kind of problem?

I would be glad if someone helps me, because I'm not sure of how to
handle that kind of bug.

Thanks for reading and regards,

On debian/changelog there is:

  * New upstream release.

But actually it isn't a new upstream release, right? (as I can see on
[1], the latest version is 0.8.13).

You are right. My mistake. Done.

Also, some nitpicks:
- it's good to include the homepage of the software on the long
description (at debian/control)

Done.

- switch "debhelper (>> 4.0.0)" to "debhelper (>> 5)" (debian/control too)
- "echo 5 > debian/compat"
- at debian/rules, remove:

# Uncomment this to turn on verbose mode.
export DH_COMPAT=4

and also remove the commented lines that you don't use.

Done.

- I don't think that debian/doc is needed to install the README file
(this file only have info about compiling and installing quickplot)

Done.

Doing a quick look I saw these issues.
If you fix at least the changelog entry saying about the new upstream
release and remove the comment lines from debian/rules, I will upload
the package (the other things that I said aren't wrong, but would be
good if you update them as I said).

Erm. Fixing the number of whitespaces in scripts, Makefiles and control
files, but sponsoring something like dtc (see the BTS for some problems)
is a good sign that Daniel's priorities are not right. He goes on and on
about his pet issues, but I don't believe that his or the packages of his
applicants are of exceptionally good quality.

There's more to packaging than counting the number of empty lines.

I really don't understand why this kind of things happen. It's logical
to think that both parts aren't in the obligation of sponsoring or
accepting sponsorship. If Jens thought and felt Daniel was wrong, so
he could told him that he didn't want to change what were suggested
and he'd look for another sponsor (Jen has his reasons like Daniel has
his own ones) and therefore don't be sponsored by him.

Now, I think it's not good to send an email like accusing someone in
here nor discrediting the work of the others. It could be fixed and
discussed in another way. Also I don't understand why if we are part
of the same project, we sometimes have to talk us like if it was a
war.

I think Debian is great and I don't know If the work I have done sucks
:S or at least I have done it well to say what I wrote above is what
I think about this situation.

Daniel has been a very good sponsor with me so far, he helped me a lot
to understand many things, he was fast, and was patient enough with my
mistakes. He don't put lot's of emotions on his messages, he just write
what he thinks is good, without any bla bla.

I agree. Daniel is a perfectionist and reliable person. I have learned
a lot when he sponsors me. He doesn't put lots of emotions because as
far as I can see he is a very objective person. I also have to say
that I like when he sponsors me because I can understand and improve a
lot the work that I do in Debian.

In the other hand I don't think he has something to change, I really
do appreciate all the work he does and how he does. He imposes a high
quality standard when he sponsors a package.

The package should work properly, but won't allow static linking. As
for why the .a files aren't being created, you'd have to look into the
build process for the package.

Now the package compiles well. I'll keep testing and researching.

"man debhelper", under the NOTES section, lists the differences between
the compatibility levels. One of the additions in version 5 is:

- dh_install errors out if wildcards expand to nothing.

So, since libCEGUI*.a are not being created, this results in an error.
To fix it, I guess you just need to remove the usr/lib/libCEGUI*.a entry
from debian/libcegui-mk2-dev.install, or wherever it's listed.

I thought it, indeed, you're right. But libCEGUI*.a are the static
link files, so my questions are: will the package work properly
without static link files? Why aren't they being created? Is it
correct if I just erase this line into libcegui-mk2-dev.install?

Problems when I use debhelper compatibility level 5

2006-12-30 Thread Muammar Wadih El Khatib Rodriguez

Hi *,

I'm getting some problems when I use debhelper compat level 5 for
compiling a source, but when I use debhelper compat level 4 instead
the package just compiles fine. I was researching in google but I did
not find anything useful about it for resolving my problem. I'm using
CDBS and the package which I'm trying to compile using compat level
version 5 is cegui-mk2 .

I wanted to change compat level to 5 because If I use 4 linda gives an
Error. I show it below:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/devel/libs/cegui$ linda -i cegui-mk2_0.5.0-1_i386.changes
E: cegui-mk2; Uses cdbs and debhelper.mk, but debhelper Build-Depends
is too old.
This package uses cdbs and includes debhelper.mk, but the version of
debhelper the package Build-Depends on is too old. To use
debhelper.mk you currently must Build-Depend on at least debhelper (>=
4.1.0).
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/devel/libs/cegui$

Now, If I change it to 5 this is what I get:

dh_installudev -plibcegui-mk2-dev
dh_install -plibcegui-mk2-dev --sourcedir=debian/tmp
dh_install: libcegui-mk2-dev missing files (usr/lib/libCEGUI*.a), aborting
make: *** [binary-install/libcegui-mk2-dev] Error 1

libCEGUI*.a are not being created during the compile process. I'd be
glad if someone could help me or give me an idea, I still trying,
researching and testing looking for what is happening. If any other
information about it is needed, just let me to know it.

Thanks for reading and regards,

RFS: cegui-mk2 (updated package)

2006-12-26 Thread Muammar Wadih El Khatib Rodriguez

Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for the new version 0.5.0-1
of my package "cegui-mk2".

It builds these binary packages:
libcegui-mk2-0c2a - Crazy Eddie's GUI (libraries)
libcegui-mk2-0c2a-dbg - Crazy Eddie's GUI (debugging libraries)
libcegui-mk2-dev - Crazy Eddie's GUI (development files)
libcegui-mk2-doc - Crazy Eddie's GUI (documentation)

The package is lintian clean.

The upload would fix these bugs: 398108, 402445

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/c/cegui-mk2
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable
main contrib non-free
- dget

Did you repackage the source tar ball? This is, generally speaking,
considered a bad idea unless there is a really good reason to do so. Use
the original tarball as downloaded from the web whenever possible.

Yes, I did it because the package was in *.zip and in Debian is needed
in *.tar.gz

debian/changelog - the "Closes #" text needs to be on the same bullet as
the description of what it closes. "dch" is a good helper tool for
editing the changelog.

You're right. I've fixed it.

You have a dependency on "misc:Depends", but you never set it. Just
remove the dependency.

Russ Allbery answered it, and it was what I read, too. Now I'm
confused so what should I do, remove it or leave it?

When writing the "description" line, imagine that the sentence has a
"packagename is a" at the beginning. In your case, the description would
be "Universal webmail developed in PHP". Consider whether the PHP part
is really relevant (it can go in the detailed description part).

Thanks for the advise.

When writing the detailed description, the first paragraph should be a
more detailed version of the subject line. I.e. - repeat what the
package is and what it does.

I'm working on it.

Personally, I would change the bullets to remove the "it's", but that
really a style thing.

Remove the disabled debhelper lines in debian/rules. I'm surprised
lintian doesn't complain about that one.

I'll remove them. I was thinking about and it's not too elegant leave
disabled debhelper lines into debian/rules.

You are running dh_install, so why not use that to copy the php files
over to the installation directories? RTFM on dh_install for how to do
that at a centralized file.

I did not use it because how I said, it's my first ITP. I RTFM and now
dh_install is which copy php files :-)

empty lines at end of debian/rules and debian/uebimiau.links (and
several other files under debian/)

I fixed it.

README.Debian:
Consider putting an apache conf (via alias) that points a given URL to
the webmail. Check out how phpmyadmin does that for paths.
/tmp gets erased once in a while. It is not wise to recommend to people
to trust files or subdirs under /tmp. It is much better to create the
directory yourself (say, /var/cache/uebimiau) and pre-patch the relevant
configuration file.
In short, I would try to change the package so that the first 3 bullets
are unnecessary, and the fourth unnecessary for standard installs. The
rest of the bullets need to be merely informational.

I'm working on it.

You create files under /usr/share that are group writable by www-data.
Quoting FHS:
>
> The /usr/share hierarchy is for all read-only architecture independent

>
The only reason I can see that lintain did not complain about this is
because, due to the way fakeroot was used, which means that the chgrp
and chmod commands in your debian/rules did not have any effect. You
need to recheck your installed package to make sure that it is:
1. Useable after a simple "apt-get install"

I did it, I installed uebimiau using apt-get install and It just works
fine. But obviously is not fine what I did so I'm fixing it.

and
2. Has the permissions you expect it to have.

On a personal note, unrelated to the debian packaging, I'm taking a wild
guess based on your name that you know how this webmail handles right to
left sent emails, and sending BiDi emails.

I really have to say I didn't understand what did you mean on your
personal note. I did a research about what is the mean of BiDi, and I
found [0] so what do you mean?

Otherwise, I'll be glad to sponsor this package when it's ready.

I'll appreciate your sponsorship. Thanks a lot Shachar.

The intention of the author is obviously fine, so packaging should be no
problem. However, I would suggest that you ask the author to add the
recommended comment ("This program is free software; you can redistribute
and/or...") on the top of all source files. You should also copy that part
into debian/copyright.

Ok, I'll ask him about add the recommended comment that you suggest me.

No problems at all. Even though it is doubtful whether this is allowed by the
DFSG, it is common practice for license texts, and even for the "free software
fundamentalists" (as I am sometimes called) of Debian that is not considered a
problem. ;-)

That's fine if it's referring to the copyright notice or list of

It should work, note that the field is ${binary:Version} with a colon
now.

I'm going to try again, because I want to improve the packages which I maintain.

Yes, I do not practice what I preach.

This package is involved in an important dependency chain (indeed a
Priority: Important chain), so it was decided to keep the old variable
to make backports easier. We will probably change post-etch to the new
variable though.

My comment was because for doing my watch file I followed your

be prefixed with lib. I know that I'm getting those warnings. But, What
about the dependencies? I'll research if dependencies problems happen
when the blacs' package names are changed. I think at least
scalapack's dependencies should break.

  * blacs1-pvm.postinst is useless, as that will be added by
dh_makeshlibs

You are right. I made a test. I erased the file blacs1-pvm.postins and
dh_makeshlibs created this file like I read in the online manual [0]
So, Done :-)

  * Please drop the use of ${Source-Version}, see
http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2006/09/msg00228.html

I read all the thread including [1] and [2]. I think the part of the
code that you mentioned above is into control file. I did tests and I
didn't have success when I changed Source by binary. I was reading the
code of one package that you maintain [libksba] and you use
${Source-Version} instead of ${source-Version} which is the correct
form :S Well, If we are talking about that variable into control file.

  * The short descriptions are all lacking in my opinion
Basic Linear Algebra Comm. Subprograms - Dev. files for PVM
doesn't give much indication of what the package is for.
  * The convention is to indent Homepage: by two spaces, see

I read the reference, and I could see that changelog file of blacs
does not have problems with:
6.2.4 Upstream home page

  * It would be good if the license informtion could be included in the
package itself. At any rate I think it would help to make it clearer
what is going on the the debian/copyright file. You should state
that you enquired by email and got that response.
Also there is no copyright information in that file, there is only
license information wrongly labelled as copyright information. See
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2006/03/msg00023.html

  * Why do you clean at the start of all your build targets? That is
what the clean target is for, and is messy.

I agree. I'm fixing it.

  * Please add a watch file.

Done.

  * There is an important linda warning
W: blacs1-pvm; The library libblacs is not in a shlibs file.

I'm working on it.

Thanks for your mail, I learned a lot :-)

Firstly, I'm very glad because you will be my sponsor. Thank you a lot. :-)

- Close bug 335006 as you are adopting the package (in the
changelog). Also note in the changelog that you have now the
  maintainership.

- Also note in the changelog what other changes you have done:
e.g. renaming of the lib packages. I would not recommend to do
it since you have to take care of the upgrades with
Provides/Conflicts (you did not do this). I am not sure if
  your naming is really good:
  scalapack1-mpich -> libscalapack-mpich1
Please read the Debian Library Packaging Guide:
  http://www.netfort.gr.jp/~dancer/column/libpkg-guide/libpkg-guide.html

- Why do the .so links now point to the static libraries?

I'm going to check and do all that you suggested me. I think that the
more critical part is the fact that I changed the name of the lib
packages. I'm reading again the Debian Library Packaging Guide to
investigate it. I changed It, because it was the only way in which I
didn't get any lintian errors.

Attached in this message there is a copy of the lintian report when
the name of the libraries wasn't changed. I installed scalapack on my
machine and I didn't get any error.

What do you suggest me? because lintian gives warnings If I write the
former names.

Careful. Not RFA. See http://www.de.debian.org/devel/wnpp/#l2
An RFA means that you were the former maintainer and that you want
someone else to become the new maintainer.

See http://www.debian.org/Bugs/server-control.html and search for
"retitle". If [EMAIL PROTECTED] receives mails then it will parse
it line by line figuring out what to do. "retitle" is one of those
commands that 'control' can execute.

I would suggest you first follow the procedure described in
http://www.de.debian.org/devel/wnpp/ (search the page for 'ITA') to show
everybody you are now working on the package. Find the pseudo bug report
dealing with the request for adoption at http://bugs.debian.org/263050

Dear mentors,

I read documentation. I'll describe the steps I think should follow:

1) Install reportbug.
2) What sort of request is this? ( Using 'My Name <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>'
A: RFA
3) Choose the request type: x (RFA)
Please enter the name of the package: slatec (I'm not sure about that,
Is Version's number necessary? )
4) Severity: Normal
5) Next step, Removing entries. I should retitle its bug to replace
'RFA' with 'ITA' (I don't know how can i do it) [0]
6) add the header:
X-Debbugs-CC: debian-devel@lists.debian.org

Are correct these steps?

[0] I read http://www.de.debian.org/Bugs/server-control.en.html and I
think I should use Debian bug tracking system to submit required
information (replace RFA with ITA) I'm not sure but, should I use some
Commands like submitter, retitle or owner?

Please, excuse me. I want to make the things of the best possible way.

Dear Mentors;

My name is Muammar El Khatib, I'm a chemistry student and I'm doing my
thesis on nonlinear optic (quantum chemistry).

There is a package called slatec and is up for adoption. I'm
interested to maintain this package. I talked with the developer who
was maintaining slatec, and he told me that I had to find a sponsor.
( I also read slatec's bugs on http://bugs.debian.org)

Who can help me?

I was investigating about slatec and I think slatec is important. My
reasons are:

1) Slatec contains subroutines for solving diversified scientific and
engineering problems.
2) Slatec is used.
3) Another reason, and I don't know if is important, I want to
contribute to debian.
4) I had worked with FORTRAN and I think that I've skills on
mathematics and FORTRAN.

I'm reading all the documentation of debian, and one step is write to
debian-mentors.

Please excuse me if my subject isn't correct and thanks to read this message.
