please help investigate potential gcc / kernel ICE on powerpc32 machines in lenny/sid.

2007-08-21 Thread Sven Luther
Hi, ...

I ask for volunteers to help investigate the bug

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=438504

I tried investigating it, despite what was done to me, and it appears on
both my -mitx board and ag-'s powerbook G4.

It does not appear on the augsbourg powerpc64 machines, which means
something is fishy, and since the debian project has expulsed me, i am
not able to test this on the official debian machines. It seems Martin
Michlmair has said he tested it on a official debian machine, but on the
same time Bastian Blank says :

(10:37:53)< waldi> ag-: unable to check, the debian ppc32 machines are
  broken

So, i wonder who is telling the truth, or if there is some kind of
confusion going on.

This bug is RC, since it stops the kernel from being built on the
debian powerpc autobuilders, which means the powerpc port does not
satisfy the release rules.

Furthermore, this is one more case where the vendetta of a small vocal
minority of DDs against me, is hurting the whole port, since i cannot
investigate it using debian machines, and since i am banned from most
debian lists and irc channels where this could be discussed. I am sorry
to bring this up one more time, but it is urgent that someone else steps
up, and investigates this kind of issues, or the powerpc debian port
will go one more step to oblivion.

I am sorry that this happens, but i have done what i could, and have
been hurt too much by debian's leadership, who refuse any mediation or
normalization of this mess, despite my continuous good will and appeals
at conciliation.

Sadly,

Sven Luther

Hi,

I have a debian unstable 32 bits (dual 1GHz G4) here at work, but no
time for tests, I can create you an account on it if you want.
What else do you need ? Do you want me to debootstrap some distribution
on it in order you can "play" with it.

We have tested it on a powerbook and a mpc8349e-mitx board, but it seems
they don't believe in me or something, so what is really needed is an
independent test and confirmation.

Could you do :

  apt-get build-dep linux-2.6
  apt-get source linux-2.6
  cd linux-2.6-2.6.22
  dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -us -uc -B

and let it run in the background while you do something else. After an
hour or two, it will either ICE or not.

OK I'll do that right now.

Indeed, its a chrp powerpc64, and the -powerpc64 kernels should work on
them, as well as the powerpc64 installer flavour.

I guess the kernel had a problem in etch on this hardware, did you try
it out ? Did you file a bug report ?

When I left home to go to work today, I was compiling a kernel, that
hopefully has only a few minor adjustments to it.  I removed a few
things that were Mac specific, but included the driver sym53c8xx in the
kernel instead of being a module.  Hopefully it has compiled with no
errors and I can make a vmlinuz out of it that will boot all the way
up.  If this works, then I'll file a bug report.

Well, the kernel did compile, but it still did not boot.  I'm going to
try a few more settings in the kernel configuration and if I still
can't get a successful boot up, I'll file a bug report.

And whyever that ? Do you have a single reason for this action ?

Can you tell me what those problems are ?

Well, the nack was not justified, neither was any communication
happening, and it is basically you and maximilian who decided this
without any argumentation.

I remember you that one of the arguments you gave (the abi change) once
investigated, did not end up being as problematic as your initial NACK
suggested.

You also refused the PS3 patches, even though the linux/sony guys are
actively working on upstreaming those, and the patches are all neatly
separated in little patches.

> Some of us even ignore him on IRC.

The problems are also due on big part due to the total lack of
communication of you guys.

Really sad that this happen, it is yet one more backstabbing from a team
i considered the members to be close friends once, and with whom we
achieved a lot when i had an active leadership role.

Re: please help investigate potential gcc / kernel ICE on powerpc32 machines in lenny/sid.

2007-08-21 Thread Sven Luther
For info,

Bastian Blank just expulsed me from the kernel team, without even trying
to speak to me or something, calling on a supposedly anonymous kernel
team.

I am in no position to complain, being bared from all debian kernel
lists, so sad, that again, my participation in debian is bared by those
haters who are unable to communicate and have no single clue about
solving social problems.

This will probably mean no ps3 support and no efika support in debian,
even though i am currently doing the work for this support.

...and it should never be tried. Having no idea who is right and who is
wrong, by acting like this you make yourself look stupid, arrogant,
express your weekness, your inability to solve problems in an adult way.
You damage your personal image and the position you are trying to protect
in this way. You're just playing against yourself. Not clever.

Spare _us_ your senseless remarks, thankyouverymuch. Do as you request
yourself.

And what makes you think such a statement on the _list_ will help with
getting things done? If you feel the need to do so send him a private
mail, not to the list. In no way your whining is any better.

NACK, it had been tried. Wake up and check the archives. And it just
increases the perception that the Debian community is an unfriendly one,
thanks for proving it once again.

 So long,
