Wow strange. I encountered this problem some months ago with the
installer not being able to configure and set up the ethernet card on my
playstation 3 which is a powerpc based machine. This was fixed for
squeeze alpha 1. Is it broken again?

I've already provided that info a few times. For the centralized D-I
buildds (which includes powerpc) Luk Claes and Otavio Salvador are the
persons who set up the buildds and who are AFAIK the only people who
currently have the access required to maintain the buildds.
I have seen no mails from them on the d-boot list requesting help with
that, so I can only assume they're still willing to maintain them
(although the evidence seems to indicate otherwise).

If it doesn't get fixed, there's not much point in claiming that
Debian supports PowerPC architecture...

Bullshit. I agree that it's a huge nuisance for testing and that the daily
builds really should be available, but the alpha1 release works just fine
(except for the known issues) and a next release will also not have this
issue.

For testing the current development status of the installer you could
always build your own images. It's not that hard.

Your point about not supporting powerpc is a gross exaggeration and to
be

honest I'm getting pretty tired of your repeating that any time
*volunteers* don't jump quickly enough to your liking.

So far I've also not seen that much actual help with arch-specific D-I
development from the Debian powerpc community, despite repeated calls for
help from our side.

Cheers,
FJP

AFAIK, the d-I powerpc images currently don't work. However, there are
images for powerpc alpha which do work. The images that do not work are from
before alpha1 was released. I had a similar problem with the pre alpha
builds but my problem was the the network card couldn't be configured. I was
not sure whether it couldn't find the drivers for the network card or not
only knew that it would not configure the network card and that is where
installation would come to a halt. This was fixed with the alpha1 builds.
Unfortunately, I cannot help you with sid daily builds because the
installation is unable to mount the cdrom driver once the installation
starts. However maybe that has changed and will test a sid build and see if
it can find the network drivers to install.

Hello, I have successfully installed Debian Squeeze on my ps3 using the build
from feb 12 using a microsdhc card. The only problem I encountered was that it
could not find the correct kernel to install therefore a kernel had to be
manually installed after the installation completed. The message was something
to the effect of no installable kernels were found in the defined sources. If
there are enough interested people who use Debian on the ps3, then maybe we can
have this fixed. Thank you to everyone who has helped progress Debian on the
ps3 to where it is today.

The PS3 needs no firmware.  It has its own network driver
ps3_gelic that must either be built into the kernel or
available in the installer's initrd image.

It could be a problem with NetworkManager, or whatever
is used by the installer, not recognising the PS3's Ether

It used to work. Something had to have changed with the installer because the

   Hi.

I'm a debian linux user and have installed and used debian in my PS3. I
saw the Geoff updated version of ps3-debian-install-howto and stay very happy
to see that debian installation become PS3 friendly. I try to follow that
tutorial to see the debian installer progress, but have few problems.

First. Trying to use the daily d-i build the installer doesn't recognize
the PS3 network card and BD drive. I was using the PS3 connected with cable,
not wireless. So, the installer just don't can go further.

Second. I just give a try to debian 5.0.4 release. Using the install64
option and the installer is started, but here also the PS3 BD drive and netwrk
card is note recognized. Again I can't go further to install debian on PS3.

I have write two ps3 debian install tutorial. One using USB Pendrive and
CD to install[1] and another using only a USB Pendrive[2]. In both I have used
the vmlinux kernel from old PS3 LDSK iso image. The installation is like an
usual PC installation, but few options like language selection and keyboard
model are not complete, not shown, for example, the ABNT2 keyboard model. So I
wish to update/improve my tutorial to debian leeny and future releases.

Can you give some feedback and help to make the debian PS3 installation
more user friendly?

Thanks in advance and best regards.

At Norberto's suggestion I did a side-by side comparison of the PowerPC
daily buisnesscard installer from the Sid d-i and the Squeeze d-i at

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/{squeeze,sid}_d-i/arch-latest/powerpc/iso-cd/

This build finished at Mon Feb 15 04:15:05 UTC 2010. (for Sid d-i)
 and
This build finished at Mon Feb 15 04:17:52 UTC 2010. (for Squeeze)

The Sid d-i failed with seg-faults.  The Squeeze d-i did *not*.

In fact, the squeeze d-i installer completed a normal installation and
 booted just fine.

So... What do we do now?

We need someone with direct access to a machine to test it and debug

Anyone want to help?

Hello, I am currently unable to test but when I did test this the segfault
occurred before the installer would even start. This was done on a
playstation 3 system witch contains a cell broadband engine processor. This
test was done between a week or two ago. Anyone else that can provide more
information please jump in here so we can have a working debian squeeze on
the powerpc platform. Thank you.

So far as I can tell, this bug has not been looked at by the debian-installer
folks.

Is PowerPC simply so unimportant that resources cannot be spared to even *look*
at a problem that renders the installer unusable on that hardware?

From my experience

a) there is little point to the business card image. The netinstall is the good
option.

b) daily builds are not necessarily supposed to work they are just for
developers to share and try out ideas with.

c) try the weekly builds,

d) try testing, do a basic install and add unstable items with testing
preferred. Unstable is not guaranteed to do anything except that (do I have
this exactly right) certain very severe bugs cause it to reject moving to
testing, after a short period of time the item either moves to testing or to
experimental or nothing (in that particular version).

I am no DD I have just listened to the lists for a few years.

I can confirm that this is bug is also present on the playstation 3. Starting

(cc'ing debian-kernel now too, for some feedback)

d-k folks: the issue is that the ps3 fails to boot with the latest lenny
2.6.26 kernels, due to what appears to be a kernel bug which has been
 fixed upstream).

 my original post:

 http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2008/10/msg00029.html

so where was i... yes, it seems that it's in fact a kernel bug.

i updated to the latest kboot, which also had the same problem booting the
kernel. then googling for ps3 2.6.26 leads to the following:

 http://www.yellowdog-board.com/viewtopic.php?f=19t=4063start=0st=0sk=tsd=a

(scroll down a bit searching for 2.6.26)

 which points to:

 http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/linux/kernel/972382

which mentions an obscure intterupt handling bug causing the problem, and
 which points to:

 http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff_plain;h=de85422b94ddb23c021126815ea49414047c13dc

which was accepted into the -stable queue for 2.6, which was then released
 as part of 2.6.26.6:

 http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.26.y.git;a=commit;h=90e21dd5346538810cff7f5fa2d3b0ae4c88989d

 so thanks for the pointer.

d-k folks: is there any feasibility for getting this fix into lenny, or am I
 just SoL?

Re: How to build ps3-utils from source

2008-04-22 Thread Norberto Feliberty

Hi, taking a look at teh install readme file from ps3-utils-2.2.0, as I
understand it, I have to build it by typing teh following commands

./bootstrap # for VCS sources only
./configure
make
make install

Do I type ./bootstrap # for VCS source only or is there a number I need to type
in place of #? what about for VCS source only? Do I type this part as well or
is that part supposed to be relaced with something else? Thanks

Hi, thanks for replying. The speaker-test command never minished it just kept
running the same line again It did not go back to the prompt where I could
enter more commands I left it alone for over an hour and it never finished so I
turned it off becaeu I had to do something on my ps3. the volume on my tv
speakers are turned up. Could it be a powerpc port of debain problem? I am
currently using debain i386 on my pc via a virtualization software and I get
sound working. What could be wrong. Thanks.

Hi after trying all sorts of things out to see if I can get my sound working,
just out of curiousity, I went to youtube to see if the video would play with
sound and surprisingly it did. I first thought that there was a strange
problem that lets me only hear sound from youtube web site but then I tried
some mp3 files from my cell phone and they played too with sound and I was able
to hear the music. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the help

Help needed in fixing some post installation issues

2008-04-20 Thread Norberto Feliberty

Hi, I have just installed Debain on my playstation 3 using a Debain multi-arch
DVD built on April 16th. The installation went well with some errors/warnings
related to the kernel but I have hopefully installed a kernel correctly. How
can I verify that I have installed the kernel correctly and make sure that it
is working correctly? Now for some issues taht I am having with debain on my
playstation 3. First, I currently have no sound. When I click on the volume
icon, I get the following message.

The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This
means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that
you don't have a sound card configured.

You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker
icon on the panel and selecting Remove From Panel from the menu.

How can I get my sound working. Another I ssue that I am having is that ther
are two entires in teh network manager both for a wired connection. There is
only one ethernet port on the playstation 3. Why are there two entries comming
up for wireless connection? Thanks.

Can you use a full CD or DVD set instead of the netinstall CD to install debain
on the PS3? I just ask because I would perfer to install the whole system via
CD or DVD instead of installing over the network. Thanks. Norberto

Good to hear that debian can be installed with the debain powerpc cd and the
linux addon cd. I have not tried this yet but will definatly give it a shot
when I have some time. For those of you have have tried and succesfully
installed debian using this method, does the wireless connectin work? Thanks.

Will Debian 5.0 have support for PS3?

2008-03-06 Thread Norberto Feliberty
Hi, are you in charge of making linux happen on the PS3? If so, do you know if
support for the PS3 will be included with Debian 5? Also do you know when will
it be possible to use accelerated graphics on the PS3 with linux like you can
on a regular pc with linux? Thanks. Norberto

RE: Will Debian 5.0 have support for PS3?

2008-03-06 Thread Norberto Feliberty
Hi thanks for the info. I like to look a different linux distros for the PS3 to
see which one works best for me. One thing that is important to me in a linux
distro for PS3 is flash but there is no real support for flash on the PPC.
Since you are the one who is making linux happen on the ps3, are you in the
position of making flash available for linux on the PS3? If not, who is the
person in charge of getting things like flash working on linux for PS3? Are you
a debian specific person or you answer questions about any linux distro for the
PS3. I like to try out new builds of linux distros on my ps3 when I have spare
time so I can tell someone if I find any bugs but that is all I know. Norberto

Re: How to install testing version of Debain on PS3

2008-02-27 Thread Norberto Feliberty

Hi, Thanks for the reply. You mean I have to build my own kernel from scratch
in order to get debain working on the ps3? If so, this is way over my head. I
have the latest otheros.bld file installed on my ps3 A while back, tried an
unofficial debain version for ps3 which produced a 60hz screen refreshed rate
better than any other distro came with. If this is too difficult now. I hope to
try debain as soon as it becomes easier to install. Thanks.

How to install testing version of Debain on PS3

2008-02-23 Thread Norberto Feliberty

Hi, I do I install the testing version of debain on the ps3? I understand that
the testing version of debain has no otheros.bld file and is missing some ps3
specific utilites but I read on here that it is installable on the plyastation
3. Can I just for example burn the latest testing net install iso for power pc
and put it in my ps3 and it will install as long as I already have an
otheros.bld file installed on my ps3 or is ther more to just burning the cd in
order to install bedbian currently? Thanks.
