Hello!

I have made some more progress on the hfs package to the point that it
now builds fine on Linux. I have not tested the binaries yet, except for
a quick "mkfs.hfsplus" which seemed to work.

All the changes can be found in the "linux" branch in [1]. I have also
added a TODO file for Linux called "TODO.linux" which lists the remaining
work to be done.

Once I have worked through all the TODO items, the next task should be to
thoroughly test the code before submitting updated packages to both Debian
and openSUSE.

As for the licensing question: I have not heard yet back from Apple Legal
yet, unfortunately. However, according to the Wikipedia article on Apple's
APSL license [2], Apple has relicensed some of their APSL-licensed projects
to the Apache License in the past, so there is hope.

I also got some information on the HFS+ utilities developed by Paragon and
it turns out that these unfortunately do not support legacy HFS at all.

So, the best would be that Apple decides to relicense the hfs package to
use the Apache License. If anyone has possible communication channels to
Apple which they can use, please give it a try and see if you can contact
anyone at Apple that could help with the license change.

Thanks,
Adrian

this ISO :
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/ports/snapshots/2022-12-09/debian-11.0.0-powerpc-NETINST-1.iso

Installation works until I must choose a mirror. I tried defaults

installer can't access to them.

I'm using this AQEMU configuration:

/usr/bin/qemu-system-ppc -monitor stdio -k fr -machine accel=tcg -m 512
-drive
file="/home/david/Documents/Informatique/Documentation/Macintosh/debian-11.0.0-powerpc-NETINST-1.iso",media=cdrom

Please just use an older, known-to-work installation issue.

Due to the complexity of the bootloader setup on PowerMacs, the

Perhaps someone with writing skills and interest might be

I'd be happy to help with writing. I enjoy writing docs for some reason.

I think the problem is, Debian does not have a good strategy for
dissemination of long term information for PowerPC. They have a wiki
but there's little information about PowerPC. Instead, Debian places
the long term information on static web pages that are woefully out of
date. No one can edit the web pages except Debian admins, and they
don't do it. (I tried to get them to update it a couple of years ago.
It went nowhere).

A FAQ might be a good first step to triage the problem.

But as Adrian points out, the people with the access and the knowledge
don't have time to tend to it. That problem begs a crowd source
solution like a wiki. But then we are back to the problem of using
static web pages instead of a wiki.

Information management is hard.

Yes, that image doesn't work. The previous image does work, however.

The reason why the current image doesn't work is because it does not contain a
manually build debian-installer package which is currently necessary because
the hfsprogs-udeb [1] package has not been accepted into unstable yet.

So, please use the powerpc and ppc64 images from [2].

Have you considered running a repo with the fixes that Debian does not
pick up or provide in a timely manner?

There's little sense waiting for Debian since Debian is the barrier in
the process. If Debian did not want to be a barrier, then they would
have done something by now. It probably won't change anytime soon.

A repo run by you to work around Debian's issues seems like a perfect
fix. You are active in the development and you are aware of the open
issues that need to be worked around.

A repo run by you would probably reduce mailing list messages since
things would start to "just work", which is what most users want.

Adding a repo to sources.list or apt.conf.d is really easy. Once a
user is aware they need to do it, there should be no more problems due
to packages and availability.

Hello,

I installed last version
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/ports/snapshots/2021-04-17/debian-10.0.0-powerpc-NETINST-1.iso
on my old grey iMac G3
(https://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac_dv_se_500.html) and
it works well. There's only xserver that doesn't start but I will try
again when ATI Rage 128 card driver will be add again in Debian

Thank you all for your help and thank you Adrian for your impressive Work.

Aaahh, OK. It's at this place. I thought it was another problem because

that being an HFS

filesystem) not create a working boot partition?

Yeah. From what I can see from links [1] and [2] I'd expect this to
be working now. Let me run an install of the latest ISO here, since
then I can then use a debugger on QEMU/OpenBIOS to find out what the
problem may be.

After a bit of fiddling I was eventually able to get a bootable HD
install under qemu-system-ppc using your snapshot image. The command
line I used was:

./qemu-system-ppc -hda deb10.qcow2 -cdrom
debian-10.0.0-powerpc-NETINST-1.iso -boot d -m 512 -nographic

The main problem I found was that starting from a blank drive image in
QEMU the /boot/grub HFS partition wasn't being created - see the
attached PNGs where part-original.png is the layout from the default
guided installation and part-modified.png is after I had manually
removed the / partition, added the /boot/grub HFS partition (I guess a
32MB size?) and then assigned the remaining space to the / partition
once again.

Once this was done, I let the base install run all the way up until
the point where the installer prompted me for the mirror information.
At this point I didn't want to install any extra packages to help save
time, so instead went back to the installer menu and then went
directly to the grub installation step. That appeared to succeed
without any error messages, so then finished the installer and rebooted.

Unfortunately the resulting HD image would not boot. I could see the
contents of the /boot/grub partition in OpenBIOS with "dir hd:,\" and
after a few tests realised I was able to boot the grub ELF directly
using "boot hd:3,\grub".

Once in the installed image I noticed that the
/boot/grub/System/Library/CoreServices/ directory didn't exist,
possibly because I skipped the installer between the mirror selection
and the grub installation? However at this point I was able to install
hfsutils by hand using "apt-get install hfsutils" which then allowed
me to do the following:

# grub-install --macppc-directory=/boot/grub/

(this installed /boot/grub/System/Library/CoreServices/BootX which was
missing before?)

# umount /boot/grub/
# hmount /dev/sda3
Volume name is "untitled"
Volume was created on Thu Apr 15 20:51:52 2021
Volume was last modified on Thu Apr 15 21:48:40 2021

# humount

After that I was able to reboot successfully by switching
qemu-system-ppc to boot from the HD using -boot c instead:

./qemu-system-ppc -hda deb10.qcow2 -cdrom
debian-10.0.0-powerpc-NETINST-1.iso -boot c -m 512 -nographic

How did you boot the installation ISO? The installed system should be
booted exactly the same way provided that you PowerMac emulation is
accurate.

Adrian

To install Debian, I boot from the installation ISO file, mounted on a
virtual CDROM : /usr/bin/qemu-system-ppc \

-monitor stdio \

...

-name "Debian + LXDE sur iMac G3" \

-M g3beige

I don't know anything about the emulator that you are using, but a
PowerMac G3 Beige system is an OldWorld PowerMac, despite the fact that
it has an early version of Open Firmware. A real-hardware G3 Beige
system requires BootX to boot Linux (it can't use Yaboot or GRUB). On a
side note, the first NewWorld PowerMac, the Lombard G3 PowerBook, also
apparently can't use GRUB because its Open Firmware is too old (though
Yaboot works ok on this system).

If that information is not relevant here, please disregard.

Hi!

Here are the first test images where the installation of GRUB on PowerMacs

lots of testing to get the implementation right.

During the partitioning phase, the installer will pop up an empty question
dialog. Just answer that dialog with "" to continue. After that, the
installation should complete normally.

The installer now also correctly installs a boot script with an icon that
should show up in the OpenFirmware boot menu that can be invoked with the
key after the machine has been powered on.

Let me know how the image works for you, then I can commit the changes for
the grub-installer package to git when we know it works for most people for
the time being.

If it doesn't work, remember I need the installation log located in /var/log
as the file "syslog".

Thanks,

I found something that could work. I started my VM with *-monitor stdio*
option and then I had the qemu shell. With the qemu command *sendkey
ctrl-alt-f2*, *sendkey ctrl-alt-f1*, I can switch to terminal in VM. I
make a new install, result in a few hours maybe...

Alt+Function Keys don't work in AQEMU. I tried to mount the qcow image,
it failed. I tried to boot Debian installed in the VM with -append root=
-kernel -initrd options as explained here
https://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34=10736=67023#p67023
but it failed because I don't know the names of the files (vmlinuz ?
init.img ?) and where they are (/dev/sda2 for /boot, /dev/sda3 for / ?).

The image is this :
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/ports/2020-05-30/debian-10.0.0-powerpc-NETINST-1.iso

And I'm using this BIOS :
https://www.ilande.co.uk/tmp/qemu/openbios-ppc-grubfix

The machine configuration is :

/usr/bin/qemu-system-ppc \

-monitor stdio \

-M mac99 \

-k fr \

-machine accel=tcg \

-m 512 \

-cdrom /home/david/Bureau/debian-10.0.0-powerpc-NETINST-1.iso \

-hda /home/david/Documents/Informatique et téléphone/Documentation
informatique/Macintosh/Debian_10_LXDE \

-virtfs
local,id=shared_folder_dev_0,path=/home/david/Bureau,security_model=none,mount_tag=shared0
\

-boot once=c,menu=on \

-net nic,macaddr=00:a2:6d:80:10:8f,model=rtl8139 \

-net user \

-net user,smb=/home/david/Bureau \

-rtc base=localtime \

-name "Debian + LXDE sur iMac G3" \

-bios /home/david/Bureau/openbios-ppc-grubfix

For /var/log/syslog, I don't know how to catch it. I can't boot the
virtual machine as GRUB did not install. I tried to mount the qcow2
image with libqcow-utils but it did not work. I will make a new
installation (3-4 hours) if I find how to catch the log.

debian-10.0-powerpc-NETINST-1.iso version 2019-07-16 and any other
versions before are using GRUB 2.02+dfsg1-20 and boot.

Versions after 2019-07-16 don't boot and are using GRUB 2.04-4.

Can't boot with qemu

2020-07-17 Thread David VANTYGHEM
Hello,

All debian-10.0-powerpc-NETINST-1.iso in
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/ports/ boot with qemu and GRUB, until
2019-07-16 version.
They don't boot with 2019-11-17 version and newer versions.

GRUB menu appears, I choose "Default install", the yellow screen is
cleaned and after "Loading...", nothing else happens.

Could someone verify this ?

I'm using this command :

qemu-system-ppc -monitor stdio -M mac99 -k fr -machine accel=tcg -m 512
-cdrom /home/david/Bureau/debian-10.0.0-powerpc-NETINST-1.iso -hda
/home/david/Documents/Informatique\ et\ téléphone/Documentation\
informatique/Macintosh/Debian_10_LXDE -virtfs
local,id=shared_folder_dev_0,path=/home/david/Bureau,security_model=none,mount_tag=shared0
-boot order=dc,menu=on -net nic,macaddr=00:a2:6d:80:10:8f,model=rtl8139
-net user -net user,smb=/home/david/Bureau -rtc base=localtime -name
"Debian + LXDE sur iMac G3"

With QEMU emulator version 4.2.0 (Debian 1:4.2-3ubuntu6.3)

Debian mirrors

2020-05-30 Thread David VANTYGHEM
Hello,

I've got a good bandwith at home. So, I'm making a mirror for Debian
(and other Linux distributions). I'm trying jigdo but I read that it is
not anymore updated and that it's better to use zsync
(https://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/zsync).

Would it be possible to use zsync on PowerPC Debian mirror ? (and is it
planned on other architectures ?)

Adélie Linux

2020-03-04 Thread David VANTYGHEM
Hello,

I tried to boot a grey iMac G3 with Adélie Linux
(https://distfiles.adelielinux.org/adelie/1.0/iso/rc1/). At the boot,
I've got the error message "Welcome Grub. unrecognized number." and
after, the Grub shell appears. I press ESC and then the GRUB menu
appears. If I choose the default line, Adélie Linux boots from Grub.

Perhaps the Adélie source code could help ?

Installation of Debian on an iMac PowerPC

2019-02-11 Thread David VANTYGHEM
Hello,

I'm a beginner on Macintosh.

I'm trying to install Debian (+ LXDE) on my iMac G3.

I'm using a CD-ROM with
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/ports/2019-01-27/debian-10.0-powerpc-NETINST-1.iso
on it.

I've got 2 errors :

1) An error during the softwares installation :
https://framapic.org/U8WJdTtyBnT6/4y7B4AB68uBz.jpg

2) A more important error with GRUB that doesn't install :

https://framapic.org/akOHeksS12oS/Da09AivOaCdX.png

https://framapic.org/mJ8AHgLUdQXb/7xPInXj4wSDY.png

And I can't boot after the end of the installation :

https://framapic.org/52MPBtyV0Qrw/Z9Zi8opwh3F1.png

I tested the installation in a virtual computer with QUEMU (AQEMU). I've
got only the 2) error and the same problem to boot.

Is it a bug or did I make something wrong ?

Is there some way to define 'core'[0] packages as blockers for testing
migration, and arch release qualification; but other packages not?

Many of these ports would be useful if just a base system was released,
and preferably having stable/security updates for that part (otherwise
it is difficult for users to try it, developers to work on it, or DSA to
support buildds for it; all of which are limitations on ports' further
growth).
I might mention that many kernel and tool chain bugs have been resolved
on hppa since
we joined ports. Total source package count is now close to 11100,
although this fluctuates.
Using this measure we are at the same level as alpha, ppc64 and
sparc64. SMP systems

are stable and run reliably as buildd machines.

Even if we increased our relative package count, we don't have the
manpower to re-qualify
as a release architecture. However, I like Steve's suggestion. Helge
effectively defined a set
of core packages for hppa when he set up a new jessie-based install disk
a few months ago.
This is currently available at . I tend to think
this should be done within

the context of Debian ports.

My question is about fan control. When I boot into Debian the fans run full
speed. I can't seem to find a package which needs to be installed to control
the fans. Is there such a package?

The solution, at least in my case, is to enter a boot parameter for

Even longer ago, I did use the IBM jdk 6 on powerpc and that one
was actually usable. This one would most likely still have the best
performance of the available jdks on powerpc. Version 7 of the jdk
is available, but it does not seem to work on Apple hardware (G4).

Regarding arm hardware, there is an embedded jvm available from
Oracle, thanks to the popularity of the Raspberry Pi. I did not
 test that one however.

Either way, I gave up on using java on my powerpc laptop. It is
simply too slow to do any useful programming in java with it. I
think that clojure and scala will be even slower.

I was curious as to what prompted you to try SBUS:/SUNW,ffb@1e,0 for the
BusID value?

Thanks,
Dave

Might as well ask about the obvious right away, do you have your
monitor hooked up to the onboard video in the bottom left corner
(facing the back), or to the 13W3 video connector on the Creator3D?
What could be happening is X11 picked the wrong card by default and
is only showing it on the opposite connector. If you have a second
monitor try hooking one up to the 13W3 and one to the VGA connector.

Hello, that was the first thing I tried however there is no VGA signal
on machfb. I managed to get IP address assigned to this machine from
DHCP server, logged in via ssh and looked at the logs. Looks like X
server has problems configuring framebuffer device.

So I generated xorg.conf manually with 'X -configure' and it thinks I
have 3 cards:

Identifier Card0
Driver mach64
BusID PCI:1:2:0

Identifier Card1
Driver fbdev
BusID PCI:1:2:0

Identifier Card2
Driver vesa
BusID PCI:1:2:0

This looks wrong to me, one of them should be using sunffb driver. And
why all three drivers refer to the same BusID?

I tried copying this file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and leaving only

Identifier Card1
Driver sunffb
BusID PCI:1:2:0

But still can't get X11 running

Any ideas?

OK changed that to

BusID SBUS:/SUNW,ffb@1e,0

and X11 works now.

Re: Debian Stable, G4 powermac, X11 crashes on boot with, black screen + therm issue?

I'm curious how the file generated by X -configure was overwritten after a
reboot. Does X -configure by default generate an ephemeral configuration
xorg.conf file?

Thanks Risto Dave,

I do have NoAccel true in xorg.conf,
but checking for the auto-dim and screensaver as possible problems are both
also good tips.

I also meant to say in my follow up, X -configure [not config], created a
file

that temporarily worked for me, but then the same issue came back after a
reboot.

I have put it in mine. I don't remember why. This is a 12 PowerBook 1.33

I remember having this issue on an old PowerBook G4 15” (which I no longer
have). It was related to the screensaver starting. The screensaver would
start but instead of displaying the graphics, it would black-out the screen.
Neither keypress nor mouse movement would return to the desktop. I
recommend
removing your screensaver. Additionally, try disabling the
auto-dim/auto-off

for the display.

Is there any reason why X would start normally,

but then a few hours later, crash with the same old problem?

Scenario:

I fixed a lot of my issues over the weekend, by using X -config

,and then used the auto-generated xorg.conf,

but first commenting out things not display-related, and the extra monitor that
it added.

Then the system booted up, and even started X!

Morning comes: The battery was fully charged. Black screen is back.
